Hey all of you fellow Fanfic writers...

For the second time in eight months, malicious code embedded in the ads on Fanfiction.net have attacked my computer.

I haven't isolated the exact virus/malware/trojan at work, but I know it was from that site because my anti virus software alerted but was unable to stop the infection. I'm running a full scan at the moment so hopefully the damage will be minimal

I have e-mailed the admin's at fanfiction.net to make them aware of this.

I know many of us (Myself included) post our stories on both sites.

Not saying not to go there but I thought you should know since this hasn't been an isolated incident.

Brian

Hmm, I think I've actually seen the code try to runs it's script before, and yes, it was on fanfiction.net, and you don't even have to click the ads.

I use Mozilla, so it seems like, luckily, the script wasn't wasn't able to run on that browser and the download was blocked. What happened is the browser window took on the title "php.pdf" and my system became unresponsive. A cold boot restored me back to normal functionality, and subsequent virus and pest scans haven't come up with anything.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I won't browse ff.net at work for a little while.

I was using mozilla firefox... still got me. Now I can't run Firefox at all and IE is funky. Something is running in the background that I can't find.

My hard drive cycles evry second or so... Guess I'm off to the computer shop...

It just happened again- I had the same happening to me twice, today and yesterday.
So I emailed the admins, hoping there´s anything they can do.
Did they ever reply to you, Brian?

Well, one thing you can do is get the Flashblock plugin for Firefox - sad that it comes to it, but it comes down to it, the advertisers and their aggressiveness, along with their cozy relationship with malware, have only themselves to blame.

These days ANY Flash application can be dangerous, as they are insecure by design.

Never heard a thing from them. I've been hit twice from ads on Fanfiction.net and once (a few weeks ago) from an ad on a popular video site (not You Tube)

All of the attacks seem to come in the form of a screen popping up saying your computer is infected (Well, Duh!!!) and it wants you to click a link to download some program to "fix" the problem.

The catch for people who are not very computer savy... the screen that pops up looks very much like the screen Windows uses for it's own firewall.

The bug is nasty. It kept disabling my anti virus software (Malware bytes) and to finally get ahead of it, I had to use a program called End It All (I use it for freeing up resources when I'm gaming) This temporarily killed the Trojan long enough for my virus scan to kill it. Took me three hours of swearing in the dead of the night but I finally killed it.

I really think those who write code like this should be introduced to Adeli Niska so he can introduce them to their true selves....

Yes, it happened each time when that kind of sponsor ad appeared (´today ff.net is brought to you by...´), and started by telling you your firewall´s off for some reason, then began scanning.

I tried to use Malware bytes as well, which it kept disabling as you said, and also needed several hours and lots of swearing to fix it.

So you just went back to ff.net and it did not happen again?

And yes, they should at least be introduced to Niska, if not a gang of Reavers for all the trouble they´re causing...

Thanks!
Maj
