one of the reasons i LOVE Firefly
is the courage it has to embrace the cheese factor both in form and content -

it blew me away that they talked so happily about this on the dvd...

and it is something i put BIG emphasis on in what and how i write - dunno if it actually works out all the time but it's worth the danger and the fun of trying!

SO - my last question of the day ficsters n readers is:

aint a bad thing

it's "cheese" as in going against the grain of what was considered acceptable (e.g. zoom lense work on the technical side - the deliberate playing with sterotypes and genre pieces and 'BIG' emotions/moments in content).

billy corgan once told courtney love to 'embrace the cheese' meaning not to fear going for the big, the shiny, the schmaltzy, the humourous and the 'hook'.

on the dvd of FireFly the documentary features the makers and writers of the show proudly saying very similar things.

FireFly is much much MORE than 'cheesy' but a little cheese is a part of the whole rich feast.

a feast we all enjoy!

Okay - so a slightly different connotation of the word "cheese" from the one I'm used to...I can dig it. So, if I've got this new connotation right...some of the cheese that Firefly embraces, I feel, is pretty damn vital to "the human experience" (and that's not a catch-phrase I bandy about lightly)...the cheese that makes life worth living in a lot of respects and that often gets ground into dust by our popular culture (read, in this instance: most TV programming),which inadvertently (or advertently) tells us that if something doesn't lead directly and quantifiably (not a word, apparently) to the next dollar - or to happily trodding on the back of the poor bastard who had the misfortune to stumble in front of us - then it must not be worthwhile...

(sigh)...ever had the feeling you should've thought about something a bit longer before you tried to actually express it...?

Anyway, I'm down with that Firefly cheese...and thanks, Wytchcroft, for raising the topic.

It was nice and cheesy when we got here!

Supurb point, there. And the very essence of what made Firefly so special. The fact that those things are deemed embarrassing by our culture, yet are so deeply valued by individual human beings, is an interesting one.

I remember thinking of Mal's love speech at the end of the movie as one of the most touchingly beautiful things I'd seen on screen. When I heard/read an interview with Nathan where he said he'd worried it would come off as cheesy, I was rather sad.

I think Firefly stood cheesy upside down, really. Made fun of it. Think Wash in War Stories, racking back the slide on his tiny little pistol and utttering the "leave no man behind" line. That was so hilariously tongue-in-cheek, it makes me grin every time I think of it.

That kind of cheesy completely rocks.

"Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you when she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home." .......We love you, captain.

"This is the captain. We may experience some slight turbulence and then.....explode"

A reader's POV here...

I once heard that "cheese" is just a word for things we (much to our own silly embarrassment) realy want to see happen. Like the idiom of a shy heart.

Embrace the cheese! There are cheesy moments in real life too. It spices things up! And add one or two teaspoon of humor to it and you get wacky fun!

Bottom line: Sure, it's full of fat and it's basically rooten milk. But it's damn tasty! Just don't abuse it because it will get you sick.
