I think the very best, very saddest, and yet most real and beautiful versions I've read of their relationship are when they do try to be together even though Inara is seeing clients. It forces Mal to learn how to try to see past that and to support her and accept her despite her flaws... Just as she would have to with him.

However, I'll also say, that I think that if Inara ever did decide to leave her profession, that I think her charms and ability to serve as "ambassador" for Serenity would not be diminished.

She'll have to do a lot more talking is all, because she can't fall back on the privilege given to her as a companion, allowing her to land on any world and get through customs if she's meeting with a client.

And I also think, on the rare occasion, if she's worried about the crew or there's some witch like Saffron who needs to be set down a few pegs, that Inara would pitch in on heists, and that she'd be amazing at it. But it would not be a common thing, because Inara has a sort of pride, dignity, and spiritualism/ethics to maintain, even if not a companion, and because it would really trouble Mal if she played a major role in his crime.

Yeah, I've been toying with that too - what would Inara do if she stayed on Serenity but wasn't a Companion? Because, while she seemed comfortable enough with the crime, I can't really see her as a full-time participant. I'm struggling with that in writing the continuation to "Solace." But I like that she would still be able to use her looks and charm and all that. The only time we really see her play the Companion card full out is in The Train Job - with her papers. I'm sure her smile and the way she has with people would get them out of a few jams without the papers.

I think you're right, that it would trouble Mal. I kind of hope it would cause him to re-evaluate his petty criminal ways. It's funny, he always bristled at the "petty" thing, but would be really want to be a criminal mastermind? I would like it if the crime became less a focus of their work. At the same time, they take the jobs they can get, and some of it is crime, and I'm not sure how to replace that. I think it would also trouble him in that way that he feels Inara is above it all, that she's too good for their life on Serenity. A lot of pieces to somehow fit together...

I've also thought that she'd make one heck of a politician if she wanted to be, in addition to helping the crew get more legal jobs moving finer quality items. Though I'm not sure how she'd get her foot in the door of politics, but still, imagine her using Serenity to campaign around the Rim Worlds as maybe a representative of guild expansion when she's out there, and occassionally heading into the Core to try to represent Rim and Border world needs and interests.

She could also potentially write some incredible memoirs. I'd certainly read them.

Okay, those are fantastic ideas! Love it. Would you be offended if I tried to incorporate something like that into my fics?

No, go ahead. :) I don't own them. If they come into play at all in any of my writing, it'll be much later on.

Besides, I took the idea of Inara being the crew's fine goods middleman/negotiator from one of GillianRose's fics. When I read it I thought, Inara, with her diplomacy and charm and head for business, helping the crew get decent jobs, that makes a lot of sense. I've used the idea in small ways since then.

The politician idea is something I came up with because I realized she'd be good at it and it'd let her retain her powerful status. I'm sure in her companioning, she had the ability to influence politics through intimacy, friendship, and appeal. She might not necessarily lose that.

Plus, since she actually CARES for people and would be honest and trustworthy... We need more political leaders like that.

This is excellent, I'd love to see this as a spin off in some medium - it would be a fascinating new way to explore the verse, firefly crossed with West Wing, somebody should make sure Joss knows about this...

Yeah but those fics are ominous - nothing beautiful about the poison seeping into their relationship...

The idea that Mal 'tries' to support Inara as a companion is quite sweet, if demeaning to his manhood; and the knowledge that it is all in vain, has a kind of tragic beauty... all in all I don't *hate* the premise of Mal accepting a relationship on these terms, though I don't particularly like it. What I find harder to swallow is Inara accepting the relationship on these terms: intelligent, perceptive woman that she is - just watching as the damage quietly does its work.

Bittersweet tragedy can be beautiful, unfortunately. You're seeing it as a time-bomb trickling down to an acid and vitriol parting, I see it as slow heartbreak... Assuming it doesn't work. Frankly? I give them 50-50 odds whether Inara gives up her occupation or not, as to whether they can mature enough to make the sacrifices they both need to in order to stay together.
