CYRIDEL

Finally getting around to giving my review of TRS80s DVD set. All I can say is that he did an incredible job. My thanks go out to him and everyone else who was responsible for this. There isn't much to nitpick here. What you saw on TV is what you get here, along with a nice menu interface and separate theme song. If anyone is still wondering whether or not to get a set, I can only think of three reasons why you would want an official DVD set instead of just buying this. 1)TRS80 did a great job making the DVDs but he was limited by the original quality. TV Broadcast Quality goes in...that's the best it's gonna come out. So I would hope that the official DVDs would have slightly better video quality. Again, not a slight against TRS80...he did the best with what he had to work with. 2)If Firefly doesn't make it back onto the airwaves, then hopefully an official DVD set will have the unaired episodes as well as extras such as commentaries. I for one would be perfectly happy with commentaries by Joss for every episode...I love listening to that man. And finally the third, and most important reason to buy an official DVD set if it comes out: 3)To support Firefly, Joss, and ME and show those gorram boneheads at Fox that while they humped us hard, they screwed themselves as well. So that's about it. Again TRS80, I thank you on a masterful job.

Can't have too many copies, especially since we have to have at least one copy to lend out when we get someone new interested in Firefly...

Just got mine in the mail!

The quality is much better than I expected. Thanks, TRS80!!!!!!!!

One thing about my computer DVD player. The menu loaded up just fine, but it took over two minutes for the episode to start playing. I thought my computer froze. Just before I did the CRTL-ALT-DEL, the episode started playing. I found it to be consistent for all episodes.

The Phillips DVD player in the living worked worked just fine. ???

Fantastic job, excellent menu. I want to order another one for my mom. She's been calling me all hours of the night, asking me if I got my Firefly DVD's yet.

Has YOUR mom seen Firefly, lately?

Ewwww

I've put together some compatibility information on the discs, based on feedback from everyone. Players which seem to be best for these discs (and are pretty good players in general when it comes to burned DVD-R/DVD+R media):

Any Sony model
Any Pioneer model
Any Apex unit with a model # HIGHER than 1600 (i.e., 2200, 2400)
Many (but not all) Panasonic units

Known problematic players for my discs:

Any Toshiba model
Some Mitsubishi models
Some Magnavox models
Any Philips model
Apex units with a model # LOWER than 1600 (i.e., 1500, 1200)

JVCs and Samsungs seem to be about 50/50, depending on model.

If a brand/model is not listed, I have not received a report on it so compatibility is unknown.

As for computer DVD ROM drives, Toshibas seem to be the only units that don't like the discs. Also, older versions of PowerDVD and WinDVD computer DVD player software seem to have
random troubles. The latest versions of each work fine.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PLAYSTATION2 USERS: Several people who have purchased these discs report the very first time you insert one of the discs it plays fine. After that none of the discs
will play, whether they've been in the unit before or not. This has happened for the majority of people who tried it. A couple of people told me they play fine in their PS2.

I hope this helps.

Absolutely fantastic, trs80. You did such an incredible job! It looks so professional, and I love the "Keep Serenity Flying" messages in the nav screens.

Unfortunately, I took them to a freinds place up in the catskills (2 hours from NYC, one way) and left the damn things there, so I can't watch them again until I get back out there and pick 'em up! (How can I complain if I have another great reason for going to my friends fabulous chateau in the mountains?)

The DVDs are muy shiny, through and through.

My friends, who'd not watched the show, thought they were produced by Fox!

I said NO WAY! Fox is too STUPID to release this on DVD!

I assured them that I would have bought them from Fox if Fox had released anything...

BUT NO!!!! So bootlegs it shall be... for now.

Anyway, considering the work and love that went into making them, and considering how Fox has eliminated every FF viewing option we have, they're worth every penny.

The only question I have is... will Friday nights ever be the same?

Well, you could always get ANOTHER set instead of driving to the mountains But, I like the mountains too so I can understand!

It's still amazing me how many people love this show. How this for a worldwide audience:

Two sets have made it to the Gulf along with the troops. A captain, staff sergeant, and a corporal have emailed me from various locations there to tell me how they're enjoying them.

A couple weeks ago someone from Madagascar got a set from me. They heard about the show on the internet. I bet a lot of Joe Millionaire watchers don't even know where that is!

Someone who takes supplies periodically to McMurdo Station Antarctica got a set from me to hand carry to someone working a 6 month shift there. I'm in awe over this one!!

Nevertheless, I kept the DVDs even though they were supposed to be a gift for a friend... so that I can lend them to people.

Shiny!!! That is absolutely amazing! You're doing a great job keeping Firefly flying!!! Thank you!!!

I've just finished reviewing my second (Full-color label) set and they work fine in all my machines. RCA RC5220P, Dell PC w/ PowerDVD, and my PS2. Only problem w/ the PS2 is that it seems to take longer to load, but they all play fine, just like my original set.
Speaking of my original set, it is on it's way to a buddy currently deployed in the Gulf. He's looking forward to getting it.

trs80 has already received my comments about the DVD's, but I wanted to bump the thread and state that I'm another EXTREMELY satisfied customer!

One other reason to get the Official DVDs when they come out -- to not have to see the stupid ads Fox puts on at the beginning of each section after the commercials! :)

The quality was, I thought, astounding from broadcast and the menu was very well put together!

Thanks trs for the quick ship! Got the DVD's in one day (we're separated only by a couple of freeways and a bridge).

Turns out my player doesn't play them. Trs has been very responsive and helpful even though it is NOT a problem with his DVDs. It is my stupid Toshiba player.

TOSHIBA OWNERS BEWARE. Before I ordered the discs, I wrote to Toshiba and asked them if my player could play DVD-R discs. They said, yes, it can. So I ordered the DVDs from trs. Popped them in and kaboom! Disc error. So I contacted Toshiba again. They said, "Whoops! Did we say yes? I'm sorry, we meant to say NO WAY IN HELL! Thanks for calling and have a nice day." So if you have a Toshiba player, I would recommend checking and double-checking and triple-checking if your player can play DVD-Rs. However, trs said he has had zero success with Toshiba. So be forewarned!

It is back to VCDs for me. Ah well, better than nuthin'

It is definitely NOT, repeat NOT, a problem with the discs. In fact, trs offered to burn another set if I found media that worked with Toshibas (which I didn't). Now that's customer service!

Since DVD-Rs are soon gonna be as common as CD-Rs, figure I'll pick up an Apex player. Those things may not be the best quality but they'll play anything (especially if you do a firmware update). Heck, they might even play the cd cover.

Some Toshiba players play DVD-R and others do not, as you discovered. While Toshiba may not know about their players and what they are capable of playing, www.dvdrhelp.com ( www.vcdhelp.com) might. Check out the following page for a list of Toshiba players and what they can play.

Hi all,

I just wanted to let everyone know that after some PC troubles over the last few weeks, I had a complete crash. Power supply died and took the motherboard with it

I don't think I've lost any data, but I can't be sure at this point.

I have the replacement parts as of today, and am going to start rebuilding my system.

So, until further notice, production of sets has stopped. I was caught up as of Sunday night, but anything coming in since then will be delayed. I will post again when things start up again. Hopefully it will be before the weekend.

'Just want to relay my experience with TRS80's DVD Set. Superb video, audio is pretty good. On my system (Denon 3802), audio playback seems to improve when using Dolby PL II or 5ch Stereo options instead of direct Dolby Digital.

Also, the DVD-Rs play fine on both my Panasonic RV-30 (2 1/2 years old!) and Panasonic XP30 players.

Hi all,

I've replied to all emails that came in over the weekend.

Unfortunately, Real Life (tm) stepped in this weekend and I didn't get a chance to work on my system

I will start working on it tonight, and hopefully will be able to start working again on Wed.

For those of you who had orders in prior to the crash, I did manage to get some sets burned on a friends machine which should cover your orders. These will go out Tue or Wed.

Don't hesitate to contact me with questions. trs80@cornerpub.com I only have access to email from work, so don't worry if it takes a day or so to get a reply from me.
