I've been looking around the net myself for same with ut any luck..YET.

I am actually found a site (one of many) that will transcribe any music you want. Just send them a copy of the music/song on any format, including MP3 and they will transcribe it for you into any instrumentation (sp) you want. They even will do TAB. Thing is, minimum charge is $25 and the cost of transcribing a commercial is 70cents per measure. So, I am just hoping I can find it out there somewhere before I go shelling out 25 bucks if I dont have to. Although if this goes on much longer, I will at some point.

The site is, if anyone is interested:
http://www.musictranscription.net

Hope this helps, and if/when I ever do have it transcribed, I will put a post up around here.

I'll be in my bunk...

In the thread about the Firefly ring tone, someone made a midi of the theme. Contact them, cause midi is basically sheet music.

AUSTERITY

I borrowed the series from a friend of mine, and have been tinkering a bit ... I got some basic chords if you wanted to play along. I figured you'd want to have -something- to tinker with while I look at the rest of the song, so here's the stuff:

C
Take my love
Bb
Take my land
A C G
Take me where I cannot stand

Eb
I don't care
Bb
I'm still free
F C G
You can't take the sky from me

And so it goes on ...

The solo is: Eb Bb G
And is 2 bars of each (?)

A bit of improv goes a long way, so knock yourselves out!

(I should note that I worked this out on a guitar in Drop D, and that the page formatting means you can't see the C & G over "cannot stand" and "sky from me".)

- Austerity.

I was hoping to get the music for the melody and do a slightly Celtic violin version.

I'm not very good at playing by ear, but I could probably figure it out from my DVDs eventually. Although I'll try the midi file mentioned above first.

I did have a thought though - we could club together to pay the $25 to get the music transcribed. Any thoughts?

I'd gladly kick in some bucks to have a transcription of the fiddle and banjo fills. They're the only part I haven't nailed down yet.

If we get 1-2 more people, that would be pretty cheap.

Sadly, I live in the UK and don't have a credit card. But as an American ex-pat, I do have a US checking account and would gladly send a check off or would do PayPal.

So, any more takers?

I am very interested in having the Firefly theme for my cell phone. I saw an old thread cached on google that had midis of the theme hosted on a comcast webspace, but the links are no longer valid. If someone reading this has the midis that were available, please email them to me at nyphbl8d (at) gmail (dot) com. If/when I get them, I will host them on my site (which will have 100KB/s up as of Sept13). Otherwise, I may just send it to the site mentioned above and get it transcribed. Either way, I'll host the files.

Acutally, I was reading your transcription earlier today. :-)

The solo works as it is written for an instrument tuned down a step, but for playing it on an actual fiddle (in standard tuning), I had to transpose from your version.

Still, it's a big help. Thanks a bunch.

you know, you are right. I should fix that by making a transcription in concert pitch for violin and maybe do the entire song not just the solo.
I think I'll do it.

okay firefly guys...
the violin part is posted and it's in concert pitch which means no transposing required. Just pick up your fiddle and play. If your guitar player friend plays the part as listed in the old transcription with you it will sound perfect.

Q: What'S the difference between a violin and a fiddle?

Thanks Funk! Cool stuff. It makes me wish I still had my old violin. I keep thinking about buying a new violin someday. I've been playing guitar lately, though. And I only have so much budget/practice time for musical pursuits.

I wonder if I could capture the violin solo on slide guitar? Hmmm.... I need to go off and see which open tuning might be a best fit...

SERENYTY

I've been looking for something like this. Every other year, the bands do a pop concert (with popular music). My friend and I are pulling for a Space theme for next year. While he isn't a Firefly fan(and is pulling for Star Wars music), I really want to play Firefly music.

Does anyone know music from Firefly that has mostly band instruments? I bet we could get the orchestra to play with us, but it'd be more fun this way. Then I'll send it to that website.

I may be wrong, but it looks as if you transcribed this from the MIDI file, not the MP3 of the actual fiddle part. It's not quite right. I've taken a shot at it myself, and I played my part along with the MP3 on my fiddle, and it sounds about right. I need to borrow a scanner from someone, though, so I can put it online for y'all!

FunkNinjaNine:
In measure 5, the first 5 notes of the fiddle line should be Cb Bb Ab Bb Cb. The second-to-last note of the whole part is a D, not an Eb. There are a few other discrepancies that you'll see in my transcript once I get it scanned, but your part was pretty close, and a really big help, especially with the time signature changes and rhythm.

Hey guys! I double checked my transcription and no worries...It still holds. The source music for my transcription was the DVD of the TV show, so if there are midi files and other mp3s out there I am not aware of them and they played no part in my transcription.

FiddleFly: I am not saying my transcription is perfect or anything, and I am curious to see what other discrepencies you found, but the ones you pointed out are not correct. Cb's and Ab's over that Gmin chord would sound pretty wild and stick out quite a bit.

The second to last note in a lick like that would probably most often be a D, but it sounds like an Eb to me. I am hearing a major 3rd for that last interval but it's rhythmic position makes it not really matter.

Here's my transcription. I managed to download a free demo version of some scoring software so I could put it online:

http://www.davidschoenberger.net/joy/fun_stuff/Balad_of_Serenity.pdf

The Cb could be a B, which works for the chord, but it plays easier on the fiddle with the third finger, so the Cb "reads" easier for the fiddler. It's probably not technically correct, though, as you pointed out. I see now that I also left out the Ab by mistake.

I'd like to see you take mine and play with it a bit, see how you can improve upon it. I like how I hand-wrote mine better than the software version, but I don't have a scanner, so if I want to put it on the web, I don't have much choice.

I have mine in Finale...I'll upload it later today...you can see what I've taken from the piano part and put into violin.

We've done a zillion sing-a-longs with violin and guitar with it and it works just fine.

I'll post a message as soon as I've gotten it into pdf.

This is the MP3 I used for my transcript. It might differ some from the DVD. I don't know where it was taken from.

http://www.fireflywiki.org/img/Ballad_of_Serenity.mp3

Have any of you tried playing the violin along with a recording of the theme? That's how I worked out my version.

Of course, the theme is really a folk tune, so improv is the way to go. You don't have to match the recorded fiddle exactly...

One more thing....

I'd be really interested in working out a score with y'all via email. We can discuss the chords, specific licks, etc., and then post the final product here for the fans once it's done. I know I could use some help with the transcript. I'm a very experienced violinist, but I am a little rusty on my theory.

If you're interested, I have an email form online. If you fill in your email address, it won't be public or get published anywhere. I'll be the only one to get it. Then I'll send out an email to all interested parties and we can get to work!

http://www.davidschoenberger.net/joy/email.html

P.S. I promise I'm not a spammer. In fact, if someone else wants to get this going, I'll be happy to work that way.
