BIRDIE

Hi,

I discovered Firefly fairly recently (I live in the UK)

I'm a semi-pro propmaker, and am fascinated by all the technology (and lack of it) in this great show. I recently produced these replicas of Mal and Jayne's pistols from the show.

I was wondering if any other fans are interested in replicas like these?

My masters are metal, but I could cast them in resin if anyone is interested. Let me know what you guys think. Anyone know the right code for posting pics here?

Thanks for looking!

Simon

They look good, but I'd see about the possibility of sampling the real thing before finalizing the masters. I haven't spent untold hours staring at the footage, but these masters seem slightly off in some minor details that I can't put a finger on.

As an aside... I don't much collect guns that don't work. I hear that the guns on the show were made from real-life guns. If that's so, why not start with real-life guns as a template. Make the same modifications the show did. Then make resins of those.

Or sell me the real ones. :-)

They do look nice! Didn't you post once or twice before here? I was going to respond a few times to something like this, but something out of my control always prevented me.

What wouldn't be a bad idea is to juxtapose your work with a few screen grabs so that people can admire the work's quality. One of the guns looks pretty rough around the edges. That might turn people off, but if they saw that the original was rough around the edges too, then you may not be able to keep up with supply and demand!

Viva Firefly!

You can check out pics of the replicas with caps from the show at: http://www.per4mance.co.uk/Pages/Firefly.html

Reference for the weapons is very thin on the ground which makes true accuracy very difficult.

The Le Mat (Jayne's gun) is out around the lower barrel due to the fact that that the two barrels are molded together in steel on the denix replica that was used as a base.

Mal's pistol is curious. Though it is loosely based on an 1851 Navy cap and ball pistol, it has no cylinder, and the clip in front of the trigger seems to be prop dressing. It also has no 'break' or hammer. I imagine the working prop was not the same same gun as the close-up 'hero' pistol. Either that, or it used compessed air or shots were added in with CGI. It certainly isn't adapted from a real gun.

Sorry Bird, But after an in-depth comparision with A reporduction 1851 navy (which I happened to have at hand), Captain Mal's pistol was definitly NOT based on an 1851 navy. What drives me mad is i can't, for the life of me, figure out what it is based on. Definitly a revolver of somesort.

Yeah, you're right. It seems Mal's gun may be a composite of more than one pistol. Check here for a recent detailed discussion:

RUSTYBOYROBOT

Hey bird i found out jaynes gun is a lemat cavalry model, hence the different trigger guard, lanyard, and underbarrel size. 20 gauge as opposed to 16.
