So, the female Browncoat was not a successful experiment. I do apologize for that...but I have been working on the Zoe vest! These photos are of the prototype...there is still a lot of tweaking and redesigning in the future of this vext, I fear, but I do want to get it looking right. I would say I'll be ready to take orders for it in a month or so.
Questions, comments, and critiques are welcome...smartass remarks will be cheerfully ignored. Again, the dress form is several sizes smaller than the vest is designed for (going to eventually have to do something about that, I guess...)

Now, I will begin focusing on the Kaylee jacket, followed closely by the Zoe/Independent Soldier coat. I am still making Browncoats to order as well.
My direct email is tristan71@cableone.net
Thanks for looking!

What was wrong with the female browncoat? Have you still not sold it? Does no one want one?

I'm still working on affording one. Must pay debt and then maybe get apartment. Money short just now but I DO want one. I WILL have one gorramit!!

I know you said the cloth browncoat didn't work out but I thought the female coat was uber shiney.
And BZ was looking for it the other day. Where was that thread again?

Kayna, the leather I had to use was significantly thinner than that for the regular Browncoats (for the curves required) and it did not hold up to being stitched all that well. I tried to modify the collar because it did not look right and ended up shredding the leather. So, right now, I am only offering the regular leather Browncoats. I am still keeping an eye out for the right kind of cloth for the cloth version, but I don't think they will fall right. I did respond to BZ with the link to the other thread, but have not heard anything since then.

Maybe by the time you are ready to buy one, I will have re-patterned the coat...but I was really not looking to try it over again. It was a costly experiment that did not go smooth.

FFG, Yes, 'tis yours...hang on a spell, it'll be there!

Serenity, thank you for that!
I may have found a local source for the Kaylee jacket cloth...it's just a rumor, but I'll verify it tomorrow.

Yes! My thread absentee-ism has paid off. Thanks for working this project, mate, I aim to purchase one of these fine vests as soon as you take orders or whatnot, if I've the cashy, that is.

Thank you, AgentRusco!
They should not be all that bad price-wise. I have seen others elsewhere for almost $250.00, and I know for sure that I can beat that with no problem. What I am waiting on now is to figure out how much tweaking I'll have to do and how long they'll take to build...it should not be long before I know for sure.

FFG...um...you ok?

I didn't know all that about the hardships of the ladies coat. I'm sorry it was such a problem.

And I just noticed that I forgot to compliment you on the Zoe vest! How neglectful of me! It is truely a shiny piece of work. FFG is a lucky gal to be getting it. Your skill and talent with this stuff never ceases to amaze me. Not to mention arouse my envy.

Thank you, Kayna. I was also highly put out that the female version did not work out. Like Joss, though, it will be on a back burner...hopefully I will be able to return to it one day.
Thank you also for the compliment...I am just happy to be able to build things that fellow Browncoats can appreciate! I hope to be doing this for a long time!

Ok, turns out the local source has a close color match for the Kaylee jacket cloth, but the pattern is nowhere near correct...back to the drawing board on that one!

On the plus side, though, I did find the perfect pattern for her jacket...all it will need is minor modifications. I also found a wonderful coat pattern for Zoe's coat! There's no way I can use it for the Independent Soldier coat, but it was way too shiny to pass up. When y'all see it, you'll flip! I hope so anyway... I'll be playing a bit on cloth this weekend, so I may have some progress to report by Monday.

If anyone out there knows of an online source for Chinese patterned cloth, I'd love to know...I'm having a hard time with finding any...

Thanks!

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

This looks pretty shiny, Tristan! Though I do think it looks a little lighter than her vest. Maybe that's just the way things were shot; the lighting on the show was fairly dark.
I remember being struck by how much the vest differed between series and movie. I like the look of the series vest better, the one here, but I bet the zippered vest was a lot easier to get into. Though the buckles also probably allow for a better fit.
Sorry, random thought.

PR, I am using scrap leather to get the fit right. It would be silly to use the good leather, as this pattern is going to take several alterations before it is complete...and the leather gets expensive after a few screw-ups.
The zippered vest from Serenity looks interesting, but I have no desire (or time!) to give that one a shot just now.

The jacket Kaylee wears is a pretty common Chinese jacket, and can be found just about anywhere. (Almost seems like a waste of your talents to recreate it.)

Exact patterns may be difficult to find, as the styles are always... fluid. If you could send me a picture of Kaylee's pattern, I can look around for fabric for you; there are a few fantastic fabric warehouses near me and I have some friends who order a lot from online places, as well as the hidden local Asian shops.

Cheers.

Thank you, Hell's Kitten. I got a bit ahead of myself and actually bought and slightly modified a Chinese jacket pattern. Turns out that not having anyone else in the house leaves a lot of time for me to work on projects! I'm almost done with it, and I already think I'll have to redo the sleeve curve; it's a bit too confining.
As far as the cloth, I still have to buy the right stuff. I'm using leftover weding brocade for the current jacket as there are lots of leftovers...but it's beige-on-white. One local fabric store has something that might work...if it doesn't, can I still get in touch with you about cloth?

Thank you, Haldira!
Keep an eye out for the threads...they should be out soon. I have been ill this past weekend, and that took about four days worth of sewing away from me.
I hope to have at least the Zoe coat ready by next weekend, and the vest ready as soon after that as possible.
