Finally finished the Chinese-fabric version of the jacket! This is the version with the darts in the back for a more fitted look. The other jacket can be found here:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=13&t=24601
That has info on cost, etc...but I'll go ahead and re-post that here.

It will take me about a week to make one of these jackets, and I can't do all of them at once.

Brass tacks:
The normal, boxy Kaylee jacket (from the link above) will run $70.00 plus shipping (I need more of the Chinese fabric than I thought).
The modified Kaylee jacket (the one on this thread)will run $80.00 plus shipping.
Right now, the fabric above is the only pattern I have access to...I am trying to find another source, but price is a factor.

For measurements, I will need bust, waist, hip, and arm length. I know you may not want to post that info here, so please email me at tristan71@cableone.net
I WILL NOT take any pre-payments for these. I don't like the thought of you paying for something you haven't seen, so I'll do this like I did the Browncoats...I'll try to email you when I start, and then I will email you pictures of the finished product. If you are satisfied, I will send you a PayPal Request for Money (or other arrangments) and will ship the jacket when the payment clears. I ship via UPS, and the charges are not that bad. If you give me your Zip Code, I can get you an estimate.

Ok, to the photos:

I can't think of anything I missed...I am sure I will come up with something tomorrow...
If you have any questions or comments, feel free!

Thank you all for the inspiration and for your patience.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

W-o-w........

How did you manage to make it look nicer than the version in the series??? The fabric is gorgeous!

Gorgeous, gorgeous jacket, Tristan.

LOVE the fabric.

Have you received a Cease & Desist letter
yet? Would you qualify for one?

I want me a jacket.
Before some fool makes you stop!

Rummages through finances...

Edit: is hip measurement 3" below waist?
Also, for this is arm length from point of
shoulder to wrist?

Marina, thank you! I'm glad the darts turned out the way they did.

FloralBunny, not yet...although I want to thank you for the panic you have set off in me!
Hip measurement is the widest point of your lower body...between 3" and 9" below the belly button.
And yes, arm measurement is shoulder point to wrist.

Exotick, thank you! I'll be looking forward to the email!

Oh! I have a question, now that you've clarified arm length and how to measure it - what about shoulder width? I don't make clothes, but I do know that a lot of the time my shoulders are too broad to let a jacket hang naturally. Is that a useful/pertinent measurement as well?

Don't make faces.

Marina, unless you are built like a linebacker () the chest measurement usually takes that into account. If you would care to, feel free to include the measurement across your shoulders in back, and I will see if any changes need to be made to the pattern.

KAYNA

I love my captain

Now should I buy one of these for me or should I be a good girl and spend my money on other people. Arg! I want on and I have a friend that would look great in this thing (plus she's putting together a Kaylee costume) but It would take me some time to get together the money for two of them.

Such a dilema.

Quick update...I managed to come across some fabric while in Georgia this weekend:

The good news is that I have enough of this to make two coats....the bad news is that I can't order any more of this fabric. This was a close-out, and the store does not have access to any more. So, the next few orders will have a choice of the original fabric or this!

So, I can still build these out of the cloth shown in the pictures way up at the top, and I am still looking for other cloth!

Thank you, gentlemen! I already have a leather Browncoat that I have been making for awhile, and I will also be starting on the cloth coat the Independent soldiers wore...similar to the Zoe coat, just with less curves. I've been watching The Message and the pilot episode, and looking at screencaps of the soldiers...I am really looking forward to building that coat. I would really love to have several Independent soldiers marching in the parade at D*C next year!

First, I want to thank everyone who ordered one of these Kaylee Jackets. I have enjoyed building each and every one of them.
Now the bad news...I have decided to pull this from my repetoire. The cloth is difficult to find, and I have been spending more time finding the cloth than actually building the jackets. I have one or two more orders to fill, so if you are one of those, please don't panic...I'll be filling the last orders and then I will cease taking orders for these.

I still have the Zoe coat and Browncoat available, but I am having a difficult time with my leather supplier and am seeking another. I am also developing an Independent soldier cloth coat and the red vest they wore. The Zoe vest is still in development, and I should be able to get back to it after the holidays.

Again, thank you all!

*sigh* I still covet this jacket something chronic!

I saw some really inexpensive Chinese cloth in a shop near me yesterday Tristan and I had to come and have a look at the real thing to remind myself that this is way prettier than their tacky cloth could ever make...

Also... I get to give this a bit of a bump!
