HISGOODGIRL

Just a gal out on the rim writing tales.

In a number of pics of the big merc, he appears to be wearing short black nylon gaiters over his boots, closed by 2-3 buckled straps. I've looked everywhere I can think of for something like this, with no luck. Long mountain-climber gaiters, yes. Canvas gaiters, yes. Even gaiters to protect from snakebite. But no 9" fitted black nylon gaiters with straps.

Can any of you fellow browncoats help me out?

The closet I found was a type called Mistral available at REI. They aren't the big mountain climbing gaiters so they are more accurate in the cut. http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8000&catalogId=
40000008000&productId=47822019&parent_category_rn=11470738&vcat=REI_SEARCH

They were 50% off the other week.

As for buckles the Mistral's don't have any. Jayne's however just look to be 1.5" fastex type buckles on mylon sewed to them.

I saw a guy with boots matching Jaynes at the range the other day so I am 90% certain his hiking boots are by Danner.

Hey, thanks. I'd noticed these during my search but have never been able to find a clear enough pic to be real sure what i needed. Can you tell me whether there are two straps per gaiter or three, and do they buckle to the outside of the foot or on the inside?

Looking back over the photos the Mistrals are the right dimensions, but the gaiters are definitely not them.

Looking again at the series promo photos, these are the best images

**depending on whether the buckles are 1" or 1.5" type**
-The fabric appears to be a corduroy(?) is in 3 horizontal sections roughly 1.5"-2" inches each (they are each roughly a half inch wider than the buckles. The sections are then seperated by sewing between them.

There are 3 buckles and they buckle on the outside at the ankle. From the images there is barely any strap at all. Just about an inch or so sewing it to the gaiter fabric.

(1 inch of strap)-buckle-(1 inch of strap)

Looking at a 6" total size on the ruler appears almost too big, but then again Adam Baldwin is a big guy.

Any chance you can refer me to a good image on the web? I'm really good at sewing stuff fom scratch if I can just see a good detailed picture.
Sure appreciate your help!

I'm uploading some right now that I leeched from various places.

My sewing is terrible and I would make it worth your while for another pair. I'll post the links to the images in a few minutes melancholy_artATyahoo.com

EDIT - Doh!!! didn't mean for them to display!!! Was just wanting to post the links.

Here is a list of the image URLs. I cropped them down since some of them are rather large. I can mail the full images if you like.

The first one is the best. The others are just different angles and images.

Hey, D3RBY, these are great, especially that first shot. Thank you! After some examination, it looks like the pair in the top pic are made out of a heavy ribbed canvas, not corduroy, and may be OD or even camo canvas rather than black. They appear to have been beavily "distressed' with motor oil and gunk.

Some of the lower pics, which I think are from the BDM, looks like a different set-up, with the nylon strap sewn right at the top edge and going all the way around.

They do look like the two-part click'm buckles.

It's interesting to me that there are no cords or straps to pass under the instep of Jayne's boots to keep the gaiters from riding up, and he's actually wearing them above his ankles around the lowest part of his shin. Guess they keep his cargo pants from flappin' and keep rocks out of his boots.

Going by that top pic, again, looks to me like 1/2" edge + 1" strap + 1" gap + 1" strap + 1" gap
+ 1" strap + 1/2" edge, so your estimate of about 6" width looks right.

I'm gonna give 'em a shot and if I come up with a credible product, I'll let you know. You've been incredibly helpful.

Now if I can just manage to dye my hubby's khaki drover's hat black we're in business!

They actually look like three sections of 3" wide Corura nylon strap, stitched together. Then the buckles were stitched on.

Edit: Actually, after buying supplies, they appear to be 2"-2.25" webbing.

Did you use flat webbing or tubular webbing? It looks like the 3/4" or 1" buckles/small straps are definitely tubular webbing, but I can't really tell for the 2" strips. It looks pretty flat in the pictures, but I'm afraid the flat webbing (basically the same stuff used for car seat belts) will be to flimsy.

I used tubular webbing from REI for the straps and wide elastic for the actual gator part. It looks very close, and stays in place better than any non-stretch material would have. The elastic was either 2 1/2" or 3", I can't remember which off the top of my head.

Ok, that makes sense. I really didn't think the larger strips were tubular webbing. In fact, it looked a lot like grosgrain ribbon to me. :) If you used elastic, then I wasn't too far off.

I'm thinking about going to Petsmart and getting 6 of their adjustable nylon dog collars to use for the buckles and straps. Did you wind up using 3/4" or 1"? They carry the collars in 5/8, 3/4, and 1 inch, and I figured it would be a lot easier than trying to thread the webbing into the buckles. Plus, my local REI was out of the 1" buckles and their webbing stock was pitiful to say the least.

BTW, thanks for replying so quickly. I saw in your profile you hadn't posted much since last August, so I didn't know if you were still around or not.

I'll post a pic of hubby's costume at the CSTS showing on Saturday, but I'm not sure if he'll have his gun prop painted or not. Plus, I don't think he'll be able to take his knife in b/c the venue serves alcohol and a 9" blade would therefore be illegal, but we'll at least have the sheath attached.

I dug them out and measured. I used 3" elastic with about 1" of overlap. The buckles and webbing are 5/8". In retrospect, 3/4" might be closer, but these look very close.

As for posting, I actually haven't been on in awhile, but I have email notification setup on this thread... :)

Wonderful. That's exactly the info I needed. :) Thank you so much for your help. Now I just hope Petsmart has 6 black collars in stock...

I'm trying to get this done for Saturday while finishing up my thesis since the first draft is due to my committee on Friday. Did you find it fairly easy to construct? I'll probably have a few hours on Saturday, but between the thesis and the 8 month-old, I haven't had a ton of time lately. I'm just trying to gauge if I'll actually have the time to get this done. To me it looks like it should only take a couple of hours, but you never know.

I think it took me about 2-3 hours. It wasn't that bad. The worst part was that I didn't have a small enough needle for my machine, so I kept catching the elastic...

Also, I rolled and stitched (kinda like a hem) the bottom edge, since it looks in the pictures like they're kinda bulky and wide at the bottom.

I've made an awesome discovery (or at least I think so).... Jayne's gaiters.

Having made a Jayne costume to debut at Dragon*Con this year I faced the prospect of making Jayne's gaiters. Nothing out at any of the outdoor sporting goods stores comes close. My wife and I researched the pictures and made a go of it. I think they looked great for what they were. Then I got home and looked at people's pictures from Dragon*Con. I happened to be going through shots of the guys in Starship Trooper costumes and my jaw hit my desk... All the soldiers in Starship Troopers are wearing the EXACT SAME GAITERS!

It makes perfect sense considering the Starship Trooper armor was used in Firefly for the Alliance soldiers... just painted purple.

Hope that helps folks in locating screen accurate parts!
