I've been thinking up a plot for a potential Serenity trilogy, or at least two Serenity sequels and I want to share them so i can hear people's opinions.

Serenity 2 would be about how Malcolm Reynolds is now deemed a wanted man by the Alliance and the crew are on the run - some deaths, betrayals and romance would be involved and it would be something along the lines of the Winter Soldier movie.

Serenity 3 would take place on a post-apocalyptic Earth-That-Was and there would be some Mad Max style natives who've grown accustomed to and adapted to the planet's harsh atmosphere.

An ongoing sub-plot would probably center around a civil war brewing between browncoat/browncoat sympathizers and the Alliance after the Miranda tapes being leaked.

What do you guys think?

The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at https://www.mediafire.com/two

Your Serenity 2 is a good idea. It reminds me of Serenity-Leaves-on-the-Wind comic:

Your Serenity 3 needs more details. It has to have a Firefly in it. That's my opinion. How will Serenity get to Earth? And why will Mal go to Earth? Who is going with him from the original crew? Did he hitch a ride with an Alliance starship? Who is building the starship for Mal?

Starships are rare or non-existent in the Verse. Only Joss Whedon knows for sure. Maybe all the old ones built on Earth will never fly again because those ships are as old as Christopher Columbus's ships are today. As far as I know from the TV show, nobody (and I do mean nobody) has ever attempted to make a trip back to Earth in hundreds of years.

To me, the first question is - how much post-Serenity continuity do you want to include?

As Second alludes to, we've got LEAVES ON THE WIND (as well as a few short stories) that help round things out. One interesting thing about LEAVES ON THE WIND: Post-SERENITY (the movie), folks seem to think there's going to be a giant social revolution in response to the Serenity Broad-Wave. According to LEAVES ON THE WIND, there's not. We see some modest revolution, largely crushed due to poor organization.

Related, I think a lot of people assume that a post-SERENITY Mal would assume a leadership role in some kind of revolt. The truth in LEAVES ON THE WIND is very different. Instead, he hides like he's never hid before, then does everything he can to not assume a mantle of leadership.

With respect to visiting Earth That Was, personally, I always sort of saw the series ending with a retro-fitted Serenity heading off into the Black and leaving the 'Verse behind (it having gotten too crowded for Mal's tastes)... but we would never see him arrive anywhere. That just personal opinion, though.

Whedon has stated that in his initial seven-season depiction of the series, Blue Sun would be revealed to be the true villain (Joss never viewed the Alliance as evil per se), and that would be gradually revealed.

To me, if you were looking at a trilogy to follow Serenity, it might go something like this:

MOVIE II: Serenity is in hiding. There's some social unrest. The Alliance APPEAR to be the villains... but at the end, the twist is that Blue Sun has been pulling the strings the whole time. Plot-wise, this might involve one of the other secrets locked in River's head.

MOVIE III: Although Mal has no real desire to fight, Blue Sun won't leave him and his alone, so he must take the fight to them. He learns some great truth about Blue Sun and maybe Earth-That-Was (perhaps E-T-W isn't quite as blighted as it was believed to be, and the experimentation with River was somehow part of a program to get back there). As Simon stays behind to try to institute real change in the 'Verse, a world-weary Mal sails off into the Black toward new adventures.

So, Blue Sun should be an overarching bad guy like the Emperor in Star Wars? Maybe they'd be responsible for the Miranda PAX.
