Sooo. Brussels. High populations of Muslims and Atheists. If ever there was an actual oil and water scenario it'd be THAT. A lot of articles say they KNEW it would be a matter of time and yet they didn't do anything.

I wonder what it is that Belgians were supposed to DO?

Dear daughter asked me about how "they" (police in general) could stop terrorists ahead of time. I have to explain things simply to her, so I thought about it and said

They can't, really

Yeah, sure, our FBI has entrapped any number of witless people who had to be encouraged and substantially helped along the way with their "terrorist" plans, but I don't believe I have ever heard of the alphabet agencies preventing a real, serious plan of attack save one: the arrest of a terrorist traveling from Canada to the USA in a plot to bomb LAX (2000). The arrest was developed from intelligence abroad.

The 2010 Times Square bomb was stopped by sheer dumb luck, when a street vendor noticed the device.

We are fortunate in having 3000 miles of ocean separating us from "them", so most attacks in the USA have been by "self radicalized" individuals or very small groups who don't leave much of an internet footprint. As far as Brussels - I understand that they don't coordinate and share intelligence very well with their EU partners. That might be one area to beef up, but I'm not sure it would make a difference.

As far as refugees and migrants are concerned, the UK, France, and Germany (thru its hosting of the NATO/USA air base in Ramstein) have done a great job creating those refugees. So I come back to my stated position on refugees and immigrants: Stop making other nations living hells, and you won't have the blowback of refugees/ migrants.

American ISIS fighter Mohamad Khweis has deserted the Islamic States control after finding it “very strict.” A 17-minute long video was released of the 24-year-old detailing his entry into ISIS. Khweis was eventually taken into custody by the Kurdish forces after surrendering. According to Khewis, ISIS regimen of prayer, eating and eight hours of daily instruction in religion and sharia law made it too difficult to live in Mosul. Situation in the Middle East seems a mess now and very fluid, migrants and foreign fighters seem to be moving back and forth between Syria, the Middle East Europe on the 'refugee' wave

Not sure Syria can possibly be fixed or situtaion solved during this US admin, possibly might have to wait until the next US Presidency, Everyone involved now French, Israel, Saudi, Iran, Turkey, Russia, the Iraqis, USA, 'Kurdistan' as its called....most agree ISIS should be taken out but not everyone is going in the same direction. Different factions, different politics so its one giant Cluster F*ck and there were rumors and reports ISIS if bombed any more might be getting to move its Capital to Libya, multiple groups and factions fighting each other on the ground Hezbollah, FSA, Islamic Front, Fatah Halab, A Taliban Al-Qaeda group, Al-Nusra, Muhajirin wa-Ansar Alliance, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, Turkistan Islamic Party, ISIL or ISIS aka Daesh, Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade, Army of Jihad...the list goes on and on. A terror suspect has been "neutralised" during a police operation in Brussels as investigations continue into Tuesday's bombings. Witnesses described hearing at least two explosions and gunfire at the start of the raid in Schaerbeek on Friday, where a suspect was shot and detained by police.

Belgium's public broadcaster, RBTF, reported that the man was carrying a bag believed to contain explosives, while other outlets claimed he had emerged from an underpass carrying a machine gun.

There are reports a Russian special forward observer, a pathfider phoning up for fighter aircraft so to speak needed to to direct air or indirect fire was killed. The Russian soldier surrounded by ISIS calls in airstrikes on himself.

U.S. forces killed a senior ISIS leader, among several key members of the militant group eliminated this week, Defence Secretary Ash Carter said Friday.

Carter identified the senior ISIS leader as Haji Imam and described him as the group's finance minister. He said he was a "well-known terrorist" who had a hand in terrorist plots outside of Iraq and Syria.

"Leaders can be replaced. However, these leaders have been around for a long time. They are senior, they are experienced," Carter told a Pentagon news conference.

Carter did not say whether the ISIS finance leader was killed in Syria or Iraq.

Appearing at the news conference with Carter, Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said there has been no fundamental shift in the U.S. approach in Iraq, and he said efforts are under way to accelerate the campaign.

The U.S. military has killed numerous Islamic State leaders in recent months. Earlier this month the Pentagon said it killed Omar al-Shishani, described as the Islamic State's "minister of war," in an airstrike in Syria. In November, the Pentagon said an airstrike in Libya killed Abu Nabil, another top ISIS leader.

As ISIL gets squeezed in Syria, expect to see more bombings and suicide attacks elsewhere. It's anticipated, as ISIL will attempt to open more "fronts" than the ones that aren't going so well.
