In the West, functionally speaking, “terrorist” is now a propaganda term with little meaning other than “a Muslim who engages in violence against Westerners or their allies.” It’s even used for Muslims who attack soldiers of an army occupying their country.

The scholars Remi Brulin and Lisa Stampnitzky have spent years documenting how the term “terrorist”, from the start, was little more than a propaganda tool designed to legitimize one side’s violence while delegitimizing its enemies’ violence.

The problem with this logic is that in the case of DASH they claim to represent Islam and do not. They claim to be fighting for things most of their fellow Arabs do not support. They are not fighting for the Middle East to have the right to determine it's own fate. Instead they are fighting to force their warped ideologies onto everyone through terror.

If you understood the article, you would NOT have mentioned DASH.

The article's title is: Why is the killer of British MP Jo Cox NOT being called a “Terrorist”? Because the killer is white male Thomas Mair, a Britain First affiliate. The excuse the newspapers use is that Mair suffered from mental illness which is now terror shorthand for ‘he wasn’t Muslim’ even if Mair was a Nazi. Mair had struggles with mental illness. But exactly the same was true of Omar Mateen, who slaughtered 49 people in an Orlando LGBT club last week, and he was instantly decreed to be a “terrorist” by essentially every media outlet despite those mental health issues and his obvious struggles with his own sexual orientation.

I guess I need to mention that because Omar Mateen was called a "terrorist", John McCain launched an attack on Obama because the President had not sent more troops to the Middle East to fight "terrorists" that McCain wants killed. McCain has fallen into the lazy habit of calling everybody who is a bad Muslim a "terrorist" because McCain isn't thinking straight and McCain imagined that Orlando and the Middle East were connected because everything bad is "terrorism". McCain had to retract his claim that Obama caused the killings in Orlando when somebody pointed out that doddering old fool McCain was making less sense than usual.

Hear at least we use the term to describe violent acts carried out in the name of an ideology. These acts usually include killing people indiscriminately.

Orlando jihad terrorist & wife exchanged texts during rampage

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/06/17/reports-orlando-gunman-w
ife-exchanged-texts-during-rampage/86027272

Orlando shooter Omar Mateen exchanged text messages with his wife at the height of the Pulse nightclub rampage, trying to draw her attention to news of the carnage, according to media reports.

CNN first reported the exchange, quoting a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation of the shooting at the popular gay nightclub that left 50 people, including Mateen, dead. NBC also reported the incident, quoting a source close to Noor Zahi Salman, Mateen's wife.

According to NBC, Mateen's mother called Salman during the early morning hours Sunday asking if she knew where her son was. Salman, according to the source, said she did not and texted him: "Where are you?"

Mateen responded: "Do you see what's happening?"

Salman replied: "No?" according to the source.

Mateen then texted: "I love you, babe."

Salman, 30, also tried calling her husband several times during the standoff, a second law enforcement official told CNN.

Salman, who married Mateen in 2011, has been cooperating with investigators. Salman allegedly told investigators that she drove Mateen to the Pulse nightclub in Orlando about a week before Sunday's shooting, suggesting that the gunman identified the target before moving forward with the attack. The development was first reported Tuesday by NBC News.

Fox News reported prosecutors are seeking to charge Salman as an accessory to 49 counts of murder and 53 counts of attempted murder and for failing to notify law enforcement about the coming attack and lying to federal agents.

Second amendment cases at the Supreme Court ought to take into account the invention of the cartridge, the ammo magazine, the semi-automatic rifle and handgun. Courts have already ruled that the second amendment does not cover hand grenades or rocket propelled grenades, despite the fact that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia suggests ‘hand-held rocket launchers’ are protected under second amendment. But now that he is dead, no one heeds Scalia.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

So,
For whozit or anyone else espousing the NRA line: I asked this question earlier and didn't get an answer. Here it is again in a more expanded form:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States
"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013, firearms were used in 84,258 nonfatal injuries and 11,208 deaths by homicide, 21,175 by suicide with a firearm, 505 deaths due to accidental discharge of a firearm, and 281 deaths due to firearms-use with "undetermined intent" for a total of 33,169 deaths related to firearms (excluding firearm deaths due to legal intervention)."

As I understand it, the NRA's position is that it's people with guns who are the problem, not the guns themselves. Given that the NRA sees the problem as the wrong people getting guns, what is its solution for the roughly 33,000 of the wrong people getting guns?

The reason why I bring this up is because to me it doesn't matter if he was a nutcase, or an ISIS terrorist following orders, or somewhere in between. In ANY case, he shouldn't have gotten guns.

So ... what does the NRA propose to keep this from happening again, by keeping guns out of the hands of the wrong people?

Let me just point out that the author left out vital relevant facts in the opinion piece. Doing that is known as cherry-picking. And whether you do that in the news, in discussion, in debate or in opinion, when you distort the facts, you've changed the nature of your communication into propaganda. But WE don't have any of THAT in the US, do we?!

More guns is always the answer. Actually that is the NRA's only answer according to an informal poll I took in Baytown Texas with four samples. The NRA position would be: “If everyone carried a gun, everyone would be safer.” Just writing that made me feel Jaynesque stupid, which is why it is only the tacit position, not the Official NRA Position.

On Friday, Donald Trump offered up this comment on the Orlando shooting: "It's too bad that some of the young people that were killed over the weekend didn't have guns attached to their hip....Had people been able to fire back it would have been a much different outcome."

Presumably he figured that this was the "strong" pro-gun position, only to discover that even the NRA thinks it's not a great idea to mix firearms and alcohol. So today he walked back this comment, saying that he was "obviously" referring only to "additional guards or employees."

This is, obviously, a lie, as even the lightest perusal of his original remarks proves.

Gun Industry Describes Mass Shootings Like Orlando as a “Big Opportunity”

In recent corporate presentations, leading gun makers celebrated the fact that consumers bought more firearms because of the December terrorist attack in San Bernardino. And, prior to the massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando on Saturday night, executives were telling investors to expect another big bump — because of the upcoming elections.

Sturm, Ruger & Co. Chief Executive Michael Fifer, speaking at his company’s annual meeting in May, noted that his company — the largest handgun manufacturer in the U.S. — saw a spike in demand that “was strongly correlated to the tragic terrorist activities in Paris and San Bernardino.” Sales eventually slowed down, but Fifer called that a “big opportunity for the distributors to step up and take on inventory” to be ready for election-related sales.

In February, on an investor conference call, Fifer had predicted that “we’ll see a step up of demand if a Democrat wins” the presidency. And if Democrats win control of the Senate, he added, gun sales will increase dramatically based on fears that a more liberal Supreme Court might restrict gun rights.

Every mass shooting is a new opportunity to make more money money money, glorious money.

Shares in US gun companies rose on Monday following Sunday's attack on the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, in which 49 people were killed.

Smith & Wesson shares closed up 6.9% while competitor Sturm, Ruger and Company saw its shares finish up 8.5%.

Shares in US firearm manufacturers typically rise after a mass shooting.

Texas mom shoots her own daughters dead in the street before being gunned down by police.

Of course she was a Republican. It's Texas. She pretty much had to be. Hardcore gun nut, right-winger, Obama-hater, the whole shebang. And she killed her own daughters on her husband's birthday for no reason at all.

I'm sure this one will be labeled "mental illness" since she was white and conservative. My question is this:

If she's so goddam mentally ill that she's a danger to the lives of her own daughters, why the fuck would the GOP and the NRA want her to have more guns?

Sad, but true.
