When things like driving drunk and texting and driving kill a lot of people every year, not wearing your seat belt is one of those things where if you die because of it they'll just treat you as they would a smoker and say "serves 'em right". Everybody needs to break a law or two every once in a while. For a majority of us, driving a few miles over the limit or not wearing our seat belt is the extent of our "F You to The Man". It bothered me when I was younger that they made the laws so that cops could pull you over for no other reason than not wearing your seat belt because depending on how big a dick the officer was they could end up ruining your day as that was their foot in the door to do a search if they wanted to or whatever else... Maybe I'm getting lazy in my old age, but I don't care about that stuff anymore. If you're going to drive around with something you shouldn't be driving around with, just wear your seat belt. Be friendly to the officer, even if they're being dicks, and they might even let you off without paying anything. It's been a while, but I used to get pulled over a lot and I hardly ever got a ticket. These days I pretty much drive the limit because I'm never in a hurry to get anywhere. :) All of that advice is pretty hard to follow though when you're getting a $200 ticket for not wearing a seatbelt though. I hope you went to court over that one. There's no way I would pay that without at least trying to fight it. Do Right, Be Right. :)

When the government deems that they shall require you to do something that can kill you in an otherwise survivable situation, some people consider government mandated lethal actions to be unreasonable. For those who really want to kill themselves by wearing seatbelts, that is fine - serves 'em right. But there shouldn't be a law about it, except to confiscate funds from the public.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Most people do better with seatbelts than without. But instead of writing a law, how about this: If you get in an accident, get tossed from the car and your head is kinda squishy and your brains are leaking out of your ears, your local trauma center doesn't have to spend tax dollars treating you, and your insurance doesn't have to pay you? Responsibilities and authority should be balanced. If you want the authority of not belting up, then you have to assume the responsibility of not belting up.

My brother was T-Boned 15 years ago though and they had to pull him out from the passenger side with the jaws of life. The emergency crew told him the only reason he was alive was because he was not wearing a seatbelt.
