What's next, we start seeing reporters turning up dead? Hey Trump fans out there. Is this how your American works?

“Nothing like this has ever happened at the White House in our long history of covering multiple administrations of different parties,” said New York Times editor Dean Baquet."

The White House blocked several news outlets from attending a closed-door briefing Friday afternoon with press secretary Sean Spicer, a decision that drew strong rebukes from news organizations and may only heighten tensions between the press corps and the administration.

The New York Times and CNN, both of which have reported critically on the administration and are frequent targets of President Donald Trump, were prohibited from attending. The Huffington Post was also denied entry.

Recently said by Republican John McCain Magon. This was expected so my interest lies in how many so called Americans who post in these threads really believe in what America's about. Or, are they more interested in destroying her in favor of a racist, fascist state. My bet is they hide from the topic.

I am not aware of that many regimes which HAVE Freedom of the Press. In America this is our First Amendment Right, or the First Article of our Bill of Rights, effectively a Postscript of our Constitution. I am not sure how many other Nations have codified this concept - nor how many (if any) did so before us.

It's about time somebody stood up for reasonable people, the honest electorate. The Fake News outlets didn't make the cut this time - so what? How long has Michael Moore been excluded, where is the outcry from that? Joe McGinniss not present to perpetuate more lies? (big whoop) James Corden, Jon Stewart, Seth, Alec Baldwin, Colbert, the Jimmies, and Fake News King Dan Blather didn't get an invite? Good riddance. Was The Onion there? At least they have produced more news lately than the MSM.
As Spicer pointed out, there are more than 3,000 White House press credentials, and the room did not have that capacity. Just because NBC has ceased to be a News outlet, has intentionally made the editorial choice to be a font of Fake News while trying to claim title of "Press" does not mean that reasonable people object. If only those who have proven they can report the news are the ones allowed in the Press Room, then we may get better news. I have no doubt that the Press Room could overflow every day with the News outlets which are capable of reporting real News.

I'll give you what:

No modern president would even think of taking revenge on a state that voted against him by refusing disaster aid. No modern president would dream of evicting news outlets from a press briefing because they had criticized him. No modern president would lie about easily checkable facts on a routine basis. No modern president would loudly cite every positive bit of economic news as a personal triumph. No modern president since Nixon would casually ask the FBI to take his side in an ongoing investigation.

It's not that modern presidents couldn't do these things. They just didn't. And we all came to assume that none of them would. The technical machinery of government—collecting data, hiring staffers, working by the rules—would be left alone to operate in a professional and impartial way. But that's no longer something we can assume.

Trump is going to find lots of things like this. Things that nobody ever thought of before, but aren't illegal. Or maybe just slightly illegal. And he's going to use them to demagogue his enemies and take revenge on people who badmouth him.

News media deserve a kick in the pants once in a while

Damn, I think he may be going too far, this is kinda typically red head Scots, Irish, Caucaus, Nordic thing ... didn't expect him to live up to the stereotype fiery passion, quick temper

From what I understand it wasn't a press briefing but a smaller private meeting in an office and smaller a more private discussion with news outlets

but then again the media have given him a shitty ride, 'Trump is crazy', Trump is Hitler, Trump wants to start Nuclear War, "Donald Trump is racist", Donald Trump banned islam, hates all Arabs is going to put Mexicans in concentration camps like Fascist Germany did, peaceful protestors are not burning and destroying stuff ....the media is beyond ridiculous now as it was once called Lügenpresse, lit. 'lying press'...maybe 'silenzio stampa' or FAKE NEWS.....and the whole so-called Pissgate scandal...a BS "Trump, Russian Spies, and the Infamous "Golden Showers" Memos"....the you have the whole Sweden-Gate reaction and more BS about Golden Shower and Russians winning the election for Trump.

Pissgate began after CNN refers to a report published by Buzzfeed, allegedly from a British former intelligence agent, that claims Russian intelligence has a lot of blackmail material on Trump. One of the main claims that he has hired strippers to urinate in front of him on a bed, piss on a bed where Obama or the Obama's were going to sleep....its stupid, dumb and beyond weird. There are alleged to be more details in the report, but that's the gist of it. Newsweek...Among journalists, Bob Woodward called the dossier a "garbage document," while others like Carl Bernstein took the opposite view, noting that the senior-most U.S. intelligence officials had determined that the content was worth reporting to the president and the president-elect...The bulk of the document seems to be rumors, random emails and internet gossip compiled by a respected former British MI6 agent named Christopher Steele, describes ties between Trump, his advisors, and Russia, along with various Russian efforts to exploit these. Steele was contracted to build a file on Trump’s ties to Russia as part of an opposition research effort

....So some of the media says wikileaks is dangerous and false, reports like arms going to ISIS wrong, Pizzagate untrue and Hillary and the DNC did nothing wrong, nothing against Sanders yet they are willing to believe 'Pissgate' and attack Trump with the latest bullshit rumor?

Huffington Post writer Ryan Clayton caught handing out Ruskie flag at CPAC to create their FAKE NEWS!? Fake story that Russian Trump flags at CPAC were handed out by (Democrat operative) Bob Creamer's employee, Ryan Clayton!
https://twitter.com/JamesOKeefeIII/status/835167905113325568?ref_src=t
wsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

and yes I know Trump is not the first, different Presidents have atced in different ways, some with 'War Powers Acts' and in 2009 Obama shut out, attacked & tried to delegitimize FoxNews not for Fake News but for an opposing opinion...Trump has possibly done more with his media 'opponents'

as dumb as the media has become, its not the end

He has not censored or deleted anyones papers...but he has no longer invited them to the conference and there will be no party invite

I still think he may have over-reacted and made a mistake

Media will exaggerate, continue to throw a hissy fit, while Trump Whitehouse ignores, even plays this one down.

The best reporting that was every done was done by a guy who never talked to confidential sources or attended press briefings.

Why?

Because he didn't want to be beholden to those confidential sources, or to have his thoughts messed with by WH pronouncements.

That was I.F "Izzy" Stone:
Quote:

I. F. Stone (Isidor Feinstein Stone, 24 December 1907 – 18 June 1989) was an American investigative journalist and writer known as a man of great integrity (personal and political) who was an inspiration to other writers, and an intellectual annoyance to the American right wing.[1][2]

He is best remembered for the newsletter, I. F. Stone's Weekly (1953–71), which was ranked in 16th place among “The Top 100 Works of Journalism in the United States in the 20th Century”, and was ranked in second place among print-journalism publications.

You don't need to attend "press briefings" to know what's going on ... those are just dog-and-pony shows anyway, kind of like being embedded in the military. You'll only get to see what "they" want you to see.

To be a good investigative reporter you need sharp analysis and willingness to dig into actual records ... both public and private ... and not just listen to the "pronouncements" of the day (which are usually propaganda anyway). Reporters who are rejected by the Trump admin are being done a favor. Maybe that will boot them off their asses and get them to so some real investigation, instead of just schmoozing with TPTB.

“It’s not acceptable. In fact, it’s petulant,” he continued. He suggested the White House has difficulty telling the truth and referenced Trump calling the press the “enemy of the American people.”

Tapper then used White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s own words against him, cutting to a 2016 quote from Spicer promising that the White House wouldn’t ban media from government access.

“I think that’s what makes a democracy a democracy versus a dictatorship,” Spicer said in December.

No sh*t - that's the point. If you understood what being a "reporter" means - G

fortunately, I know one in person
Quote:

you'd know from what the WH says you know where else to look, you can get a sense of what they're trying to hide. By their phrasing you can see what they're trying to hide.-G
WH reporters rarely give any indication that they know the truth behind the lies. What do we get? BUT RUSSIA! IRAQ WMD! LIBYA MASSACRE! All "the press" wants to do is wind people up, emotionally. Lies are used on both sides, but it IS very partisan.

Quote:

It also happens to be one of the
1) most prominent public facing interactions
2) of what the White House believes.
3) It has to be put into the public record and
4) chopped up and dissected by the press.
5) It has to be, or the White House - already a source of frequent lies - will feel unchecked.
6) Just like in Russia. Ding!

Going backwards thru this ...

6) How would you know how much the Russian press criticizes Putin or Russia? Do you ever read Russian press? Of course not.
5) I don't need to hear one lie countered by another lie ("BUT RUSSIA!"). Doing that cost Hillary her job. Both the press and the DNC need to be better than that.
4) The press reacts like people here: they have not a fucking clue how to do an analysis
3) Put into public record ... OK. A faithful continuous recording and reporting of what was said it always a good thing.
2) " ...of what the white House < insert> wants YOU to believe."
1) When Trump has access to Twitter, are these little get-togethers all that important? Twitter, for Trump, seems to be like the radio for FDR.

Trump says the press is spreading fake news. The news they are spreading they are getting from Trumps own people. And when they do wish to leak to the press, they contact the news agencies some here say are fake, and not the ones our friends here quote from.

Sean Spicer targets own staff in leak crackdown

Upon entering Spicer’s office for what one person briefed on the gathering described as “an emergency meeting,” staffers were told to dump their phones on a table for a “phone check," to prove they had nothing to hide.

But even "free speech" has its limits, the most famous example: You can't yell FIRE!! in a crowded theater.

Quote:

Rulings on free speech and the press
Near v. Minnesota (1931)
A U.S. Supreme Court case in which the Court ruled that prior restraint on publications is a violation of free speech and free press. In so doing, the Court struck down a state law that allowed the police to confiscate publications that were malicious, scandalous, or obscene. The case involved a virulently anti-Semitic pamphlet.

New York Times v. Sullivan (1964)
The U.S. Supreme Court decision that prohibited public officials from suing news organizations for inaccuracies made by mistake. This ruling, based on the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of the press, made it more difficult for public officials to sue the press for libel, because they had to prove not only that the information was wrong, but that the news organization published it with malicious intent or reckless disregard for the truth.

THUGR ... is there anywhere in the Constitution that the WH has to invite every single representative of every media outlet to press briefings? That the WH has to roll out the red carpet and make itself accessible to any media representative any time, anywhere?

No?

Is it even possible to invite everyone?

No?

Do you see the WH restricting what media outlets can publish? Do you see Congress drafting laws to curtail content?

No?

-----------

Now, my humble opinion on what constitutes "free speech" is different than current court opinion, but I believe it would curtail the overweening power of the major media (and entities like FB and Google) to shape public perception, and that is this:

Free speech (to me) is speech which nobody has to PAY FOR. But once someone has to start shelling out dollars to get their opinion broadcast, IMHO it should be counted as "advertisements" and the "truth in advertising" laws should apply.

But that's just me, and why I'm on the libertarian side of the chart and not the authoritarian one.

SIG, 99% of the Republican Party distances themselves from Trump on this. George Bush came out of retirement just one month after Trump took office to answer questions, knowing he would be asked about this and other things Trump is doing. And SIG, while he is very polite and classy, he disagrees with this and much more.

Your straw man defense of Trump means squat. It's just background noise.

So now you care what Rethuglicans think?

Trump's reaction may be stupid but it's not illegal. It's not even unethical: the WH has NO obligation to do this dance with "the press". It was kind of sickening to watch, anyway. You can tell me all day long that it was a PR mistake on Trump's part, but find another issue to get all huffy about.

If he choses to keep out the times and instead invite Breitbart News, then he will have to explain that and deal with the consequences. The American people and the rest of our elected officials, will have to deal with the consequences that poses with our allies.

He also cannot use the power of the presidency to try and destroy what is considered the main stream press. Well, he can't get away with it. It should also be noted that you would have him do exactly that. Just as you try to do that here.

But that's no longer something we can assume.

Trump is going to find lots of things like this. Things that nobody ever thought of before, but aren't illegal. Or maybe just slightly illegal. And he's going to use them to demagogue his enemies and take revenge on people who badmouth him.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!! No, he doesn't. He, or any of his appointees, can say "I can't answer that". He can refuse to call on specific reporters. He can lie. What happens when the press asks about something classified? Have you not watched any press briefings or new conferences .... ever???

Quote:

He has, let me say that again, he has to give them access.-THUGR

NO. HE. DOESN'T. Different Presidents hold briefings and press conferences (where wide-ranging questions can be asked) with different frequencies. Eisenhower held 24 per year, Kennedy held 22. Nixon held 7, Reagan held 6. FDR held 73 per year. http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/data/newsconferences.php It's strictly up to the President. He (or she) can hold five every day, or none at all.

It is a conceit of the media that the President "needs" them, and that they can extract concessions from the Presidency because they can "help" the President propagandize his (or her) position , but there is no Constitutional or regulatory obligation to invite any or all of the press to anything.

Quote:

Yes, that's true.

Quote:

He also cannot use the power of the presidency to try and destroy what is considered the main stream press.
Unless Congress writes a law that allows him to do that, or repeals the FOIA, or the President violates the Constitution (which both GWB and Obama have done) then I would say it's unlikely.

Quote:

Well, he can't get away with it.
Because???It's not fair? It's not Constitutional? Say, where were YOU when GWB and Obama were shredding the Constitution?

Just OOC, THUGR, what do you mean by "destroy"? Do you mean- make unprofitable? Do you mean - make unpopular? Do you mean - make illegal?

Give it some thought.
Quote:

No, I wouldn't. Howver, he is free to criticize the MSM, just as I am, and just as you are free to criticize Breitbart (for example). I'm more concerned about FOIA and net neutrality than people moaning and bitching about the poor MSM.

Quote:

Just as you try to do that here.- THUGR
What a load of hogwash.

In what deluded world do you exist where you think Presidents have not held dark embarrassing secrets from the people, done dirty deeds, stole from the Treasury, had people killed for specious reasons, traded women like candy, and lied to the press about it? Do you think that every President who said "... and God Bless America ..." was sincere? Good grief, THUGR, you're an innocent.

G,

Not to put too fine a point on it, but in Trump's own words, We've been locked into total war every day for 15 years. Yes, he's right. We have. And we need out. Winning, yeah, that was a worrisome comment, but his clarification was we need allies. Maybe he thinks he's going to get that, maybe it's a dodge, maybe he doesn't really mean it. At any rate, the US isn't going to get allies in its current position, unless we agree to play by their rules, meaning, Syria, Russia, Turkey, Israel and probably Iran. It's unlikely that we can fulfill our own agenda if those are our allies. I still prefer to see this glass of koolaid as half full.

Edit:
Who does the deep state overthrow, the one paying them, or the one cutting off their pay?
If you do what Bush and Obama did, and fight 16 illegal wars, then you pay for it with congressional supplemental and debt, added to the budget, and the total defense spending can be over a trillion a year.

Dumb old Trump

Eh?? o_0 Not according to Trump:

"Trump says he wants America “to start winning wars again”. His first budget will certainly make it more likely that America will start fighting wars again – but that is hardly the same thing."

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/feb/28/donald-trump-mil
itary-spending-war

"The core proposal is for a massive increase in defence spending, with Trump seeking an extra $54bn for tanks, ships and weapons systems. The money will come from cutting – “dollar for dollar” – spending on foreign aid, diplomacy and environmental protection.

The myopia of that decision is astonishing. The US already spends more on defence than the next eight biggest defence-spending nations put together. The US enjoys “full-spectrum dominance”. It has a nuclear arsenal capable of destroying all human life on the planet many times over.

Yet apparently that’s not enough. Last week Trump told Reuters he believed the US had fallen behind in its nuclear capacity and he wanted to make it “top of the pack” – as if the US is not already at the nuclear summit and out of sight.

What makes this shift so misguided is not just the piling of excess upon excess, but the opportunity cost – paying for all this hardware by depleting the arsenal of US soft power. Trump’s plans call for a 30% cut in the state department’s budget, with reports of a 40% cut in US contributions to international agencies, such as the United Nations, and a 25% cut in funds for the the Environmental Protection Agency (which is already saddled with a boss who doesn’t believe human-made climate change is real). It’s as if Trump decided that the best way to protect his buildings and hotels would be to spend millions on shiny new fire engines – and rip out all the smoke detectors.

Now it will fall to Mattis and the other generals in key positions in the Trump administration to fight this deeply dangerous policy shift. Like most who’ve worn their nation’s uniform, they see war as a last resort, to be approached with no relish. But they work for a chicken hawk president, who avoided military service by claiming “bone spurs” in a foot – though he later couldn’t remember which one – and who called his subsequent efforts to sleep around without picking up a sexually transmitted disease his “personal Vietnam”."

The big stick wasn't the problem since WWII, it was the not talking softly part. If we just kept out of everybody else's business, we wouldn't be in so many wars that we started.

Trumps speaking about gutting soft power to grow the military. That means we will be fighting more wars. One source of soft Power is the State Department. He is completely incompetent.
