When Walt Disney died (1966), why didn't Mickey Mouse inherit the empire?

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?

One nice thing about egotists: they don't talk about other people.

If pro is the opposite of con, is progress the opposite of congress?

How much deeper would the ocean be, if sponges didn't grow in it?

Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?

Why do people who know the least know it the loudest?

If a man speaks in the forest and there is no woman to hear him, is he still wrong?

If you drove your car at the speed of light, and you turned your headlights on, would they work?

Why do psychics have to ask you for your name?

If all those psychics know the winning lottery numbers, why are they all still working?

Deja Moo: The feeling you've heard this BS before.

Make it idiot-proof, and someone will make a better idiot.

Why isn't the word 'phonetic' spelled the way it sounds?

If it's zero degrees outside today and it's supposed to be twice as cold tomorrow,
how cold is it going to be?

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again...it was probably worth it.

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's intolerance.

Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?

I am reading The Four Agreements (a Toltec wisdom book) by Don Miguel Ruiz.
It makes sense to me. It is short, relatively simple; I'm not to the end yet.
I may read it a lot. It is a way of transformation.

If you're in the mood to be mad, be sure to catch the video of CHP cop
beating a black woman on the LA Freeway today our country's birthday.

In unrelated news:
That evil piss-ant, Joran van der Sloot has managed to marry some crazy

All I can say to her is, "Sweetie, I hope you're an aspiring actress,
just doing this as a publicity stunt."

OK. I know this is RWED, Not Psychology Today. In general, I find
psychology more interesting than news & politics.

We all know someone who can't say "No." The kindly, agreeable
doormats of the world. (AKA Victims, but very helpful ones.) I
believe it's a learned & ingrained habit driven by fear/guilt more
than pure weakness.

It is destructive mostly of the person who practices it. But as the
problem creates misunderstanding, it often hurts others as well.

Is anyone else interested in the topic?

I work with someone like this, and she suffers from constant bouts of illhealth, much of it stress related. She really needs to feel needed, to be the 'go to' person, but takes on too much because of her need to feel liked and valued. It's a real problem.

I think many women in particular have been brought up to accommodate and not complain and not expect anything back in return. Not so much these days, but older women. The article certainly describes how that existed generationally.

I found the blog interesting. I’m not sure I agree with the analysis. There is a lot of documentation of people drawing their own kind of sustenance from doing for others that is positive. It appeared to me much of what the blogger spoke of was people who cannot say no from within unhealthy relationships. I would like to see a study taken in a much broader context not just from the bloggers own experiences.

Quote Thgrri: "I would like to see a study taken in a much broader context not just from the bloggers own experiences."

Agreed.
It's not just one flavor; people who suffer from or indulge in this
behavior are not all alike.
Example: a Caretaker type I know well is living alone with domestic
& some wild animals but no people there to take care of no more. No
people who are asking for her care. The need to take care of all the
animals around is certainly as strong as the need to take care of
people was. Shows no sign of letting up at all.

Yes-persons don't all have the same priorities, rules, expectations
or games. There's a lot of variation in it. Many are picky and say Yes
only to a certain few.

I'm sure there are more articles out there; might even be some books on it.

What I think I see in them: They are lonely, unhappy, and won't for
a moment consider change. A quote, "I don't need to change! I just
need someone to talk to."

What I'd find interesting to know about it are the consequences and
the prognosis.

Is there a Can't-Say-No Anonymous? I seriously doubt it.

I think many are trained to be submissive due to what our perceived roles for women are. Even with dolls you will find little girls playing at taking care of the doll. Perhaps a lack of a sense of security about one’s self contributes to this nurturing behavior?

Perhaps fear of abandonment plays a role in turning predisposed children into nurturers? Nurturing does keep others close. I have a strong suspicion how some children learn to get attention from their parents, has much to do with the messages sent to impressionable minds. This works to my benefit a child learns or this does not. It may be beneficial for a parent to have a nurturing child because they are less trouble? Perhaps many of us unintentionally push our children in that direction?

Perhaps again, if we learn to recognize these behaviors in our children we can teach them to be less submissive through sports or some other activity? People with two or more children are at an advantage in understanding that children in the same family are as different as night and day and that our diversity is ingrained.

Perhaps again, it is those of us who do not play the role of the nurturer who are at fault for the ills perceived by the nurturer. Perhaps it is the nature of the non-nurturer to take advantage of the nurturer and that is what we should be addressing?

Caring for an infant is such a 24/7 job. I think it can easily lead to the 'Mummy comes last' syndrome, which continues on, even when the needs dont need to be met 24/7 and can spread to everyone else. And there is something immediate and satisfying about being needed so completely as a baby needs its mumma.

If you look at any literature, any advice for women from 40 + years ago, pre feminism, it's all about women putting the needs of their husbands and children ahead of their own, 100%. In fact, women's needs were pretty much ignored. You got your sense of self through your husband and children being happy with you. It was superficially great for the husband and children, but I think in the long run it lead to some pretty neurotic behaviour from mothers whose lives and personalities had been subsumed by those around them.

Not the entire history, no. Women's role in society has not always been the same. It has varied throughout history and culturally. There have been matriarchial societies and societies where men and women share power more equally.

But we are definitely living with the judeo/christian/roman legacy of women being treated as second class citizens.

Sorta-half quote Magonsdaughter, "You got your sense of self through your husband -"

It's 1950; Dr. Bill Johnson has just proposed to me. He's a wonderful
catch. After we are married, I become Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Bill Johnson.
I have no need of my own name anymore. I'm a smiling, grateful extension
of Dr. Bill Johnson. People know nothing about me, but treat me with
respect, because they respect him. Some will call me "his better half."

Had I married a lesser man, a mere Mr., I'd get little respect. Many in
those days would call me "his ball and chain," for marriage, way back
then, was seen by many men as a rip-off and an end to their freedom.

Pre-assigned roles suck badly. Self-realization is better.

This is why one should never generalize. I learned about many different cultures in an Anthropology class. Most realize the relationship of men and women in more general terms. I was just trying to get the point across women have mostly taken a back seat to men. It is an accurate assessment.

I have heard & probably read it, but now, I don't have a reference. So
this is It as I recall about "the Formative Years." There are the preverbal
years from birth to about 3. And there are the pre-Reasoning years. I
gather the "Shrinks" observe that most people do not think critically or
reason before the age of about 7. (In my experience, many seem to
never learn it.)
Anyway, infants & toddlers cannot evaluate the input they get. They
simply experience life and absorb all the "data" as true. This is a time
when parents could really brainwash their kids if only they knew which
inputs form the desired belief set.
I observe in me that certain impressions-beliefs-views of the world
were formed & Set during this time, and if I decide later that those be-
liefs were wrong ... I can't change 'em. They are permanently recorded
in the "snake brain."
(But then ... Click training. Is that strong enough to permit reprogramming?)

The point I'm tryin' to get to, which no doubt has been belabored by
the Pros ad infinitum: In my judeo/christian/roman legacy of women
& girls, second class citizens, very undesireable to Be one, We of low
self-worth, with a conflict about ourselves, are given the task of

I read much of this till it got redundant. I have to admit I am a bit confused because of the description of the man, which differs greatly from the picture of the man being led off in handcuffs. I read on but did not finish the story because as I said it got redundant. None the less I found the whole thing fascinating.

:And there he was. Probably. The person stealing food appeared entirely too clean, his face freshly shaved. He wore eyeglasses and a wool ski hat. Was this really the North Pond Hermit, a man who'd tormented the surrounding community for years—decades—yet the police still hadn't learned his name"?

Propane tanks were stolen and yet he never started a fire? As you said about winters in main, surviving in a tent without a heat source is impossible. Also, no fire no cooked food. I'm afraid none of it adds up.

There was an amnesty I believe concerning Viet Nam vets. I doubt any are still at large or up in the mountains pursuing a lifestyle this guy was supposedly living.

Women today pursue tomorrow, which brings them closer to standing on the precipice of equality in this country.

Pistorius starts five-year term for killing Reeva Steenkamp
http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/21/us-safrica-pistorius-idUSKCN

"(Reuters) - Olympic and Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius started his five-year
jail sentence on Tuesday for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, marking the
end of a trial that has gripped South Africa and millions around the world."
...
"As judge Thokozile Masipa gave her decision on the 27-year-old's culpable homicide
conviction, Pistorius, whose downfall has been likened to that of American football
star O.J. Simpson, stood resolutely in the dock."

I feel Judge Masipa took it easy on him.

As I see it, Reeva Steenkamp locked herself in the bathroom, terrified,
because Pistorius was in a killing rage. He called out to the person hiding
in the bathroom. Did she really refuse to answer him or, knowing he was
armed, did she beg for her life? He shot four times, fully intending to
kill someone ... and he knew it was her.

Sorry, folks, I don't have any "reasonable doubt" about his actions.

What I hope he finds in prison: He'll spend very little time with other
prisoners or visitors. He'll be forced to live just with himself.

Hmmm ... Looks like a best seller to me.

'Star Trek' star Nichelle Nichols recovering from stroke

chelle_nichols_recovering_from_stroke.html?id=306349221

NEW YORK » Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Nyota Uhura in the original
"Star Trek" TV series and in follow-up films, is recovering from a stroke
suffered Wednesday at her Los Angeles home.

Tests indicate the stroke was mild, booking manager, Zachery McGinnis,
said Friday. He said the 82-year-old actress began therapy Friday.

"She is awake, eating, in good spirits and able to have full conversations,"
McGinnis said.

Nichols' role on "Star Trek" earned her accolades for breaking
stereotypes for black actresses, with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
personally encouraging her to stay with the series. She met him at
a civil rights gathering in 1967, at a point when she had decided
not to return for the show's second season.

He said, 'You cannot do that,'" Nichols recalled. "You've changed
the face of television forever, and therefore, you've changed the
minds of people," she said the civil rights leader told her.

Get well, Nichelle!

Take off your thirsty boots and stay for a while ( John Denver )

This is the Coffee-Cheers thread as you all know. It's a great place to rest yourself from the recent strains of Real World. It's a gift from Oonjerah to us. I hope you make good use of it.

On a Coffee note:
I have acquired a taste for the those little Starbucks frappuccinos.
They're a bit overpriced, tho.

I guess they do cheer me up. :)

This is a frappuccinos

I don't think so. I like coffee in my coffee. And I don't like paying triple what it's worth.

I've been reduced to drinking instant coffee from Aldis. Kind of a crappy time for my coffee maker to go out, yanno, this whole sobriety thing and all.

Thanks for that. I'd be lying if I said that there weren't bad days, but keeping yourself busy is the trick. I'm really looking forward to better weather so I can start taking care of some outdoor stuff that really needs to be worked on. Most of what I've been doing is some computer based stuff that keeps me indoors most of the time. I need some sunlight.

I got my hands full tonight. Did something stupid and now I'm in a battle with a pretty nasty piece of malware that I haven't experienced before. Shut down my internet connection when I realized what was happening and had a bitch of a time removing the root cause. Now it's just a matter of cleaning up the aftermath and making sure that there aren't any ticking timebombs hiding out just waiting to make a zombie out of my PC when I'm not looking.

I really should just re-install the OS at this point, but I've got a lot of work that I haven't properly backed up at the moment that I'm going to have to take extra care to sanitize so it doesn't infect anything else.

There's a topic we can talk about that isn't politics. What's the worst computer virus you've ever had to deal with? I might have shared my story here before. This one is, at least I hope, nothing compared to that particularly viscous piece of code.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Nothing really there Jack. No viruses to speak of. I hope you are going to AA. Nothing helps a person stay sober better than another person who's been through it.

I can vouch for that.

DID YOU KNOW

1910 Halley's Comet: People Bought 'Anti-Comet Pills', Umbrellas, and Gas Masks

In 1910, as Earth passed through the tail of Halley's Comet, people bought "Anti-Comet Pills", special "comet umbrellas", and gas masks, because there was public hysteria that all life on Earth would be destroyed by gas - called cyanogen - that was detected in the tail.

Ain't that the truth. And we can see it in what's going on today. Hopefully thought, to a lesser extent going forward.

The funny thing here is that it's Alex Jones peddling the seeds when its usually the Democrats that think the end of the world is coming from climate change. ;)

I didn't watch the video. What was his reason you needed the seeds? Is Niberoo coming? lol
