Too much stuff to even remember. The highlights-

After calling/ visiting numerous banks and lawyers, finally figured out what kind of account I need to set up for dear daughter so that I can make her my beneficiary without disrupting her benefits (assuming any are left by the time I die.)

Did 2016 Federal and State income taxes, which includes household employer taxes; and did state household employer taxes (I pay social security, unemployment, and state disability for our household employees.)

Oh yeah, while I'm at it - hired a new caregiver since our previous one had to leave the area (family situation)

And a new (temporary) gardener while our previous gardener is in Idaho for a different job.

Hubby n I bought a new car to replace the 1999 gas-guzzler

Acquired a dog- apparently- because the stray is still with us!

Am bringing to conclusion some work projects before I retire, one of them is a 6-year method development which the EPA is taking thru the wringer because it will have national significance and the other is going "paperless" in the lab.

Aside from cooking nearly every goddamn day (WISHI WOULD APPRECIATE THAT!) and taking care of hubby who has been very sick for the past month.

The problem, JO, is that thirty years ago, in my more manic moments, I was like you: thinking that government was going to solve all of our problems if only we had a wise despot. Eight years of Reagan, eight years of Bill, eight years of GWB, and eight years of Obama have disabused me of that notion! It may take me a LOOONG time to learn - but at least I learn! Although, in my defense, I was pretty distracted by too many family medical crises.

Looking back, I can see that our government policies weren't repeated "mistakes"- they were exactly what was supposed to happen. For example, the Reagan administration. It blew my cork to see what Reagan was doing with Iran and the Contras, until I realized that it was all Ollie North and William Casey - Reagen was entirely out of the loop on that one! And when he proposed START - out of sheer ignorance that he believed that he was the President and therefore had a modicum of power- the generals nearly blew their cookies. How much like GWB and Afghanistan and Iraq! Or Obama and Ukraine and Libya and Syria! Or Trump and ... any number of foreign policy adventures! Silly me, to think that "our government" in any way represents our interests!

Not to say that Corporate America... or Corporate World ... or Blue Sun ... represents our interests either. Libertarians are in denial about oligarchies and monopolization.

Clearly, we need a third way that actively devolves power instead of concentrating it. But unless you can completely reform government to represent our collective interests ... and more importantly, set up feedbacks so that it CONTINUES to represent our interests ... it is a poor choice to put your faith in government which has so clearly gone to the dark side.

A large majority of my work has been coding and beta testing of things within the realm of emulation. About half of it was a project of my own, and the other half was a collaborative effort. I didn't log times like you have, but I would think that there were easily 1,000 hours dedicated to that in the last 100 days. I have added uniform joystick support to more than 350 DOS games that either were never intended to have it, or were designed for an ancient gamepad with only 3-4 buttons instead of the new ones today with 10 buttons and two additional analog sticks.

Other than that, I've tuned up my lawnmower, fixed the flat on my spreader, planted grass seed which has covered about 60% of the mysterious damage caused in my back yard last year, finished fixing my sump pump, did my taxes, started proceedings to fight a 15% increase in my property taxes and polished up my resume. Weather permitting, I will begin a job painting a fence for somebody that is going to be my first source of income in nearly 2 years.

Lot's of outdoor projects that I will be able to start doing now that the weather has turned. The floor sunk in part of my 3 season room, so I'm hoping I don't find a nightmare back there. I'm also going to salvage some motors and the catalytic converter from an old parts car before junking it and freeing up my workshop in my garage. I've got a transformer from an old microwave that I'm going to re-purpose and build a spot welder with. Assuming I can find two more microwaves for cheap at garage sales, I'm going to build an arc-welder with them. I'm considering making my own homemade Variac, but it would be extremely dangerous and might not be worth risking just to save a few hundred bucks.

Mainly, I've just been trying to keep as busy as possible. Idle hands being the devil's playground and all of that. If I go back to drinking, I die. That's just the truth of it. You don't get chips when you do it solo, but if you did I would have gotten my 100 on the 20th of this month.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Oil change, vacuuming ... those things like that that you list I call chores, not accomplishments. That would be to me like me listing washing dishes or doing laundry. Well ... if you take out my paid job, and my home chores, or the things I paid to have done ... I've been studying addiction.

It's a conundrum to me. You start doing whatever it is you do for whatever reason you have at the time, even boredom - though most people start because a problem has put them in distress and they're trying to escape it. You go back to it because it made you feel better. But at a certain point it messes with your brain structure, including your reward system.

Do people who become addicted start out with different brains from people who don't? Do they start out with different expectations of the world? After addiction takes hold, do they then end up with TWO problems - their original problem PLUS addiction? And if you are to treat addiction, do you have to address both? It's an interesting topic.

Care to try addressing the facts, again?

Or do you shoot nothing but blanks?

Everybody's got a different brain to start out with. I'd say that's where the "snowflakes" get it right. They say, looks wise, everyone has a doppleganger out there, but just look at how diverse people are in all the physical attributes out there. I don't see any reason why brain structure would be any different. I think that's why it's hard to find drugs that would be a one-size-fits-all solution. What virtually cures one depressed person could drive another to suicide.

Some illicit drugs are going to just about hook anybody if they try them. Heroin or Meth for example. I've always stayed far away from them. Weed is something I enjoy very much and I miss, but twice in my life now I've been able to put it down for more than a few years at a time. It's hard at first, but nowhere near as hard as trying to quit smoking cigarettes.

All of that is just speculation so far though. I'm no scientist, and even the scientists don't know anything for sure at this point.

What I can say from experience and I believe is 100% fact for anybody who gets addicted to something (drugs, or just any destructive and abnormal behaviours like eating disorders or even excessive hoarding) is that yes, you do now have two problems... the original problem plus the addiction. Add a third if you want to consider the health issues brought about by long term and/or hard core abuse of a substance. Somebody who is deep in addiction is not doing anything at all to address the original problem, and are likely just letting other smaller problems build up all around them at the same time.

The last two years of my alcohol abuse were especially hard. Not only was I destroying my body and mind with it, but any relationships I had that I wasn't outright destroying I just wasn't maintaining at all and lost touch with. Outside of a very small group of people close to me, I have a lot of work to do if I choose to patch up old relationships. Some of them sadly are not likely to ever be saved.

Regular maintenance on things around my house were also negelected unless they were an emergency. Fortunately I'm getting back to these things before any major or irreversible damage was done, but if I had kept up my behavior for years, assuming it didn't just kill me, I was en route to having a condemned house on my hands.

My reward system is all haywire. I don't know if there is a way to fix that now. I don't know a lot of people who are in recovery that are Mr. Happy Go Lucky. I mean, I haven't been that way since I was probably 5 years old anyhow, but I don't see that ever changing at this point.

One day at a time.

No problem. I think it's good to talk about it when somebody is interested in the subject. I don't talk about it much at all with anybody close to me because they all have their own problems. Shrinks have never really done anything for me and they charge too much for what they offer if you don't have insurance for that.

I recently have been watching the last few seasons of a show called "Maron" which I believe is loosely based around the life of comedian Marc Maron. It's definately not for everybody, as it only has 2-3 stars on Netflix... but it must have a pretty decent following among the people who like it because there are 4 seasons so far. I can relate a lot with his character. The end of season 3 saw him fall off the wagon after 16 years of sobriety, and I felt that's when the show was at its best.

He was having a rather heated discussion with his therapist at one point and he was trying to get her to say if he could ever "be happy". She kept avoiding the question and he kept pressing her and it went back and forth a bit until he was almost yelling and saying "YES OR NO". And she finally said "NO!!!"..... "You come from a family with a lot of manic depression, you were raised by wolves and you're a drug addict. That's not a cycle that people have been known to break.".

Another quote of his is "For me, it's really not about using anymore. It's like how do I pass the time until I die. "

That's about the jist of it. Nothing to do really now but accept this is who I am and move on. I just have to keep my life "busy" with things I don't mind doing and try not to focus on the fact that I'll never actually be satisfied with anything.

My only two options are to live or to die.

Thanks to everyone here who had positive things to say. Every day is s struggle but now that I'm starting to clear my head I'm hoping I can focus my addictive personality to more positive things in my life. Just have to see how it goes.

Despite the decades of failed efforts to achieve a lasting peace in the region, Trump said his administration has a "very, very good chance" to get it done. "And I think you feel the same way," Trump said to Abbas, standing next to him.

It may not be "peace", but at least we won't have THAT boat-anchor tied around our ankles!
