I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I thought to collect all reports of Sunni terror attacks in one thread because focusing on Sweden or France (or gloating that it happens in Russia) overshadows the fact that many nations are suffering from the same scourge.

For example, does anyone know that Sunni extremists bombed Christian churches in Egypt during Easter week?

I intend to keep track in one thread. If you read of anything that I missed please feel free to fill in.

Not them.

The snarling, swirling, berserk mob did kill Mashal - sticks wielded by their arms cracked his skull, and their blood-soaked feet stamped out the last vestiges of life. But responsibility extends beyond the confines of factual action and reaction. When the mob charged the university hostel, it was little more than a feral animal, overwhelmed by primal instinct, individuals fused into one throbbing, screaming entity. Its virility questioned, its honour threatened, and its very existence in jeopardy. Rallied by visions of a glorious duty to which there is no second. What reason is left in that maelstrom of guttural frenzy? Very little. Conscience? None.

Like the froth that forms on a stagnant pool stirred up with a stick, the mob is the residue of a decaying body – a symptom, not the cause. While our justice towards them will be swift, perhaps it is time we looked at the person who wielded the stirring stick, and more importantly, who allowed the pool to stagnate in the first place.

The instigators are not hard to find, for they are not trying to hide at all. Their murderous diktats, delivered in sonorous slogans, are printed boldly on walls and banners. They build mausoleums for the terrorist Mumtaz Qadri and raise his pre-teenage son to the status of a saint. They are not hard to find at all, if we are really looking. A state that has weaponised religion is harder to spot – behind a clean shave and a crisp uniform fundamentalism becomes patriotism, and objections become treasons.

Over the next few days and weeks these instigators will be denounced - directly by some and in veiled innuendos by most. Condemnation will rain down and strict actions proposed – and rightly so. Theirs is the provocative whisper in the ear of the ‘believer’, the threat of vigilante violence, and the promise of heavenly debauchery.

But responsibility, as we have noticed, extends beyond the confines of factual action and reaction. The real responsibility for Mardan, dear reader, lies with you. Your cowardice and timidity has given space to a narrative that will consume us all.

Don’t take offence, don’t raise your voice in indignation – I know you are humane, a voice of sanity. Your heart quickened with disgust at the horrific images in Mardan just like the rest, and your denunciation was as scathing as they came. But what use is your denunciation that echoes in empty chambers you have built for yourself? A war rages in the streets, and you are content at wrinkling your noses from your ivory towers.

Ideas are nurtured by blood and sweat, revolutions built on sacrifice. In the tussle over the religious extremism one side is out in droves going toe to toe with law enforcement and staring down any official who dares oppose it. The other laments in plush living rooms with like-minded individuals, leaves Facebook statuses to be read by carefully curated audiences and hides behind the veil of anonymity. Is this the extent of moderate Pakistan’s outrage, a social media condemnation and token tributes to Mashal?

There is yet strength in your numbers that you do not know. Stand on an intersection, block the parliament road, call your local representative, anything. Put your bodies on the line, and make your presence be felt. Politicians are creatures of pragmatism; like a fungus, they grow towards the path of least resistance. A backlash from the right-wing keeps them from acting as they should to tackle this problem; a backlash from the moderates and the left-wing is needed to push them into action. 50 madrassah students, 25 motorbikes, and a tree whittled down to sticks is all that is needed to block a street and get the government’s attention – and religious seminaries have done so since time immemorial to great effect. Tolerant, rational Pakistanis number in millions, yet outside of a few trembling candle vigils threatened by a stray gust of wind when was the last time moderate Pakistan protested this brutality, when have they marched on government or come out in numbers? When have you?

“This doesn’t affect me” you’ll say, “I have my own safety to think about” you’ll add. And that is undoubtedly true – nothing about this endeavor is safe. But if safety was the prime concern the great advancements of liberal and tolerant thought – from upheavals like the French Revolution to campaigns like the Civil Rights Movement – would never have happened. At some point personal safety needs to be put aside for your ideals. Change – real, hard, implausible change, doesn’t come easy.

Let’s look at the other objection – that this doesn’t affect you. Well, it was true when they burned a poverty-stricken Christian couple over a brick kiln in Kot Radha Krishan; you weren’t poor nor Christian. It was true when they killed Ahmedis in their mosques in Gujaranwala; you weren’t an Ahmedi cleric, you are a middle-class Sunni. What about now? When a young, educated, bright student, just like you is so many ways, was butchered by his fellow students in a university – is it still too far away, is it still not your concern?

I understand. I know you are scared, so am I. But think of this; “Mashal” means torch in Urdu – the burning standard that lights a darkened path and leads the way for the rest to follow. Think of that, and put some steel in your will. This is your responsibility.

Aleppo battle: Rebels burn Syria evacuation buses

Yep, keep calling them "rebels", BBC. That'll be sure to conflate terrorists with rebels!

Quote:

Several buses sent to transport the sick and injured from two [SHIA] government-held villages in Syria's Idlib province have been burned by rebels. The attack apparently halted the latest efforts to evacuate besieged areas.

Pro-government forces say people must be allowed to leave the mainly Shia villages of Foah and Kefraya for the evacuation of east Aleppo to restart.

There were supposed to be matching evacuations: Sunni "rebels" from east Aleppo evacuated to Idlib, while Shia villagers in Foah and Kefraya - besieged in Idlib - to be evacuated to Zabadani and Madaya.

Quote:

... Buses were preparing to evacuate people from both eastern Aleppo and the government-held villages in Idlib province on Sunday. A number of buses did succeed in entering Foah and Kefraya

According to the UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which earlier reported that Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, formerly al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, had been holding them up. However, six buses were attacked and torched on the way, the SOHR said.

Looks like the "rebels" did keep their part of the bargain.

Quote:

Syrian state media said "armed terrorists" ... attacked five buses, burned and destroyed them. A reporter for AFP news agency said armed men forced the drivers of the buses to get out before opening fire and setting the vehicles alight.

What you will NOT find in western MSM is the number of people killed in the event, which is consistently neutrally described as a "bus burning". From the Hindustan Times

Quote:

126 Shia residents killed; 68 children among dead http://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/syria-bus-convoy-blast-death-
toll-rises-to-100-transfer-of-people-resumes/story-I1hTZEofqy4MrFp8YyoToN.html

The BBC continues ...

Quote:

.... Syrian state media said buses entered eastern Aleppo around noon local time, under the supervision of the International Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent. Some 1,200 people were due to be taken out of the former rebel enclave in return for a similar number moved out of the two government-held villages, Foah and Kefraya. Pro-government forces had reportedly demanded that a group of people needing medical treatment also be allowed to leave the two areas. Reports said a new agreement was reached in the early hours of Sunday but delays meant thousands of civilians remained stranded.
As mentioned previously, it's Jabhat Fatah al-Sham which held up the mutual evacuation.

It is correct that the middle east is a mess. In my opinion, it would be correct to blame religion for that. It is correct to assign criticism to Sunni madrasas for creating extremists. It is just as important to be accurate when describing Al Quad and DASH extremists. They are not Sunni. They have left the fold. Much of their ranks are filled with criminals who have records, and who know nothing of Islam, just hate. When you attack the Sunni faith you only create more. Being smart is part of the strategy of winning. Let's keep the billion who are not extremists fighting with us.

It is also worth noting, the Shia are playing a big or bigger role in destabilizing the middle east, and Europe. Yet we hear no such thing from SIG, only silence on this. Hence the title of the thread. It doesn't say Shia and Sunni does it? That is why I challenged her here. The discussion is a necessary one, but SIG will always spin it due to her hate and agenda. Iran, Russia and Assad good. The rest of us, bad.

It is also worth noting, Sunnis make up 90% of the Muslim population. I want them on our side as we deal with Iran. This is important to get right. Trumps rhetoric only inflames the situation. And SIG, well she's always on the wrong side of logic.

Hezbollah ( terrorists ) are mostly Shiite. Backed and funded by Iran.

Erin Angeles, Worked for US Dept. of State; Studied terrorist groups in the Levant

Written 26 May 2016

I know Hezbollah is a Shiite anti-Israeli group targeting Jews, but how does Hezbollah and Sunni terrorist groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda think of each other?

Hezbollah as a whole is considered a terrorist group by the Arab League, France, the US, the Gulf states, Australia, Netherlands, Canada, and, of course, Israel. While the European Union countries, the UK and New Zealand consider the military faction of Hezbollah (as opposed to its political faction) as a terrorists entity. Hezbollah is considered a terror groups by the countries and organization's mentioned first because its charter calls for the 'elimination of Israel' rendering any peaceful negotiations with the country as non-practice, and secondly, because of Hezbollah's long record of either direct involvement or assisting/sponsoring terrorist-type attacks that killed many civilians, i.e. the 1983 US embassy bombing that killed 63 people ("Judge Royce Lamberth of U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. May 30, 2003, had determined that the bombing was carried out by the militant group Hezbollah with the approval and financing of senior Iranian officials, paving the way for the victims to seek damages"), 1983 Beirut barracks bombing that killed 241 US Marines and 58 French soldiers along with 6 civilians (during the FBI's investigation, a deposition of a Hezbollah operative and later in the court case Peterson V Islamic State of Iran evidence presented including forensic bomb evidence revealed that the Islamic Jihad that carried out the attack was a front for Hezbollah funded directly through Iran), they were involved in another bombing of the US embassy in Beirut in 1984 which killed 24 people, they hijacked flights in 1985 and 1994, they were linked to the attack on an Israeli embassy in Argentina in 1992 which killed 29 civilians and were linked to another attack on the Israeli embassy in London in 1994, in 2002 the Singaporean government accused Hezbollah of trying to recruit some its citizens to help blow-up American ships in the Singapore straits, in 2008 they were linked to the bombing of a US embassy vehicle in Beirut, 2012 Burgas bombing in Bulgaria, and scores of other terrorist attacks that I did not mention here.

Importantly, in 2011 a US federal court came to the conclusion that the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania done by al-Qaeda could not have been accomplished without assistance from Iran and Hezbollah (as strange as that might sound). It was found through debriefs and testimony, that several of al-Qaeda's operatives trained in bomb-making in Hezbollah camps due to a cooperation between Bin laden who admired the Iranian-backed US Marine barracks bombing and whereby Iran offered their assistance through Hezbollah since both entities shared a similar goal. As seen by the other commenters here, some do not view Hezbollah as a terrorist group but rather as 'freedom fighters for Lebanon' but this view can be challenged with their history of involvement in terrorist activity as well as their ongoing position in the Syrian Civil War.

2. To answer your question, Hezbollah was founded in onset of the 1982 Lebanon War to oppose Israel and the South Lebanese Army whom were viewed as traitors to Lebanon. Initially, Hezbollah being predominantly Shia allowed and protected any population of Lebanon on their side whether it was Sunni, Christian, Druze, etc. As Hezbollah continued to grows its relationship with Iran and its Iranian-backed neighbor Syria, many non-Shia Lebanese began to feel that Hezbollah was simply trying to make Lebanon a Shia proxy-state of Syria through Iranian oversight and dominance. This rift has grown and less and less non-Shias are entering the ranks of Hezbollah than before. In the current Syrian Civil War, Hezbollah has chosen to back the Iranian-supported al-Assad regime which has created an even larger rift between Lebanese Sunnis who have aligned strongly against Assad and those Shia Lebanese that back Hezbollah that back Assad and Iran. So in the past, yes, Hezbollah had friendly support and relations with Sunni groups and Sunnis did join their ranks but as Hezbollah has continued to be a pawn of Shia Iran a sharp rift has occurred where less Sunnis support the group.

Islam has a soft side, but when Mohammed got his ass kicked he turned to a darker side. There are things in the Koran that definitely talk about killing the infidel and taking their women and children. "Moderate" Muslims are ignoring half of their holy book. OTOH, there are some pretty gruesome things in the Old Testament too, so religions can apparently evolve. Or people can.

Syria: Bombing hits bus convoy carrying civilians evacuated from besieged towns under deal between regime and rebels.

Car bomb ‘concealed in aid van’ targets families stranded at transit point during planned evacuation A car bomb has hit a convoy of buses carrying civilians evacuated from besieged towns in Syria, killing dozens of people as they waited to be taken to safety.

Volunteer rescue workers from the White Helmets said they recovered at least 100 bodies from the scene. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group later put the death toll at 112.

The blast hit the Rashidin area on the outskirts of Aleppo, where dozens of buses carrying mostly Shia Muslim families from pro-government villages were waiting to enter the city.

Photos that were too graphic to publish showed a huge fire raging next to bodies, including those of children, scattered on the ground next to charred buses with blown-out windows.

Two men arrested in France suspected of plotting ‘imminent’ terror attack days before the presidential election

Two men have been arrested in France on suspicion of planning an “imminent” terror attack, five days before the country's presidential election.

The suspects, aged 30 and 24, were picked up by the French intelligence service, the General Directorate for Internal Security, in the southern city of Marseille, police sources said.

France's internal intelligence agency, which had been looking for the two suspects for more than a week, had warned main candidates in the election that there was a threat to their security, campaign officials said.

Well, try as I might, I haven't found anything in the western press about "Shia atrocities". In the meantime, the Taliban (yet another Sunni extremist sect) killed over 50 Afghani soldiers with a suicide car bomb. But I guess I give them this one because they attacked soldiers not civilians.

Plus I found out more about all of those women and children who were killed while being evacuated from their besieged (Shia) villages ... yanno, the part of the story that the BBC reported as "bus burning". It turns out that the buses were stopped purposely, people on the buses had been left without food and water. THey were hungry, so when a car showed up with snacks (chips) and drinks, the kids crowded around it, and then the car was blown up.

You can not see any Shia atrocities in the press because you are incapable of acknowledging anything that goes against your agenda. Want to read about Shia atrocities? Read about Syria and Hezbollah to start with. Then follow the link and read about "LITTLE more than a decade ago King Abdullah II of Jordan sounded a warning that America’s toppling of Saddam Hussein in Iraq would lead to the emergence of an Iranian-influenced “Shia crescent”—code for Iranian expansion—from Lebanon to Saudi Arabia. His words were dismissed as alarmist. Now, though, that vision might be coming about. As Arab states have broken up, the void has been filled not only by the Sunni jihadists of Islamic State (IS) but also by the makings of a transnational Shia force backed by Iran."

No moron, it would only be apparent to you the poster and the person you are supposed to be quoting. Quoting someone means only one thing, and that is that you are quoting someone. Only uneducated people think quoting someone means whatever the poster intend it to mean, and miraculously the rest will understand and be able to follow along. How stupid is that? What it shows is that you are unskilled in the art of communication. So much so that you argue with those who explain the proper way to do it.

That's his MO, and he knows he's doing it.

Again, making up false quotes and attributing them to me. It shows you can't post without lying. Really, that's what it says about you. As I said, dumber than a box of rocks.

It would be obvious to pretty much anybody familiar with the English language that this is somebody paraphrasing what you said while also dismissing it as not worth reading. It would be obvious that it was somebody snarking you.

Nobody was lying. Nobody in the world would read this and think that you said "[who cares]", brackets and all. What the hell is wrong with you?

Maybe html formatting isn't displaying correctly on your PC? When I change your quote I make a POINT of striking out the part that I'm replacing, followed by the word or phrase that I wish to use. Only a moron - or someone whose PC doesn't display strikeouts (crossouts) - could fail to notice that your quote had been modified. And when I REPLY TO your posts, I "quote" the part that I'm replying to, followed by my comment. But it's very clear WHAT YOU SAID versus WHAT I SAID so I can't be accused of "misquoting" you.

You seem to think that "quoting" someone means AGREEING WITH them. Au contraire. Although there are many scientific, legal, and literary instances of people being quoted in support of a position, there are ALSO many instances of quotes being disagreed with. It's a very common thing to quote someone and then agree, disagree, or expand on the quote.

=====

Now, there IS one way that you can misrepresent what someone said, even quoting them word-for-word, and that is to take such a SMALL part of the quote that it can be twisted to mean - well- anything.

Movie distributors used to do that with movie reviews, and I'll give you a funny example

"It's amazing that anyone would watch such a piece of dreck!"
"How anyone could bungle such an inherently interesting concept so thoroughly is astounding."
"The hubris of this director is beyond belief"
"What a misuse of such talented actors"

Advert: AMAZING! Astounding! Beyond belief! Talented actors!

It got so bad the movie distributors had to promise the reviewers that they wouldn't do that anymore. It's called "taking someone out of context". But I don't think I do that, either.

Anyway, I hope you got a chuckle out of that.

So what?

I started this thread to post ATROCITIES and ACTS OF TERROR.

Have you seen Shiites engaging in atrocities or acts of terror? I haven't. Not lately, anyway. So I find this a kind of pointless post. I'll clarify my title so you won't get confused about what the topic is.

In the meantime, I encourage you to look for acts of terror by Shiites. When you find them, please start a thread about it and inform us all. There is no group so pure that they never do anything wrong, and this IS the Middle East that we're talking about after all, so I'm sure you'll find something.

Iran is a key ally of Russia. One of a few. Iran (Shiite) is at war with Sunnis in the Middle East. This war is one of the reasons Sunni states turned a blind eye to the madrassas teaching extremism. They need religious zealots to fight the Shiite. We all know, including the Sunni States, this has been a mistake.

Yes, I've always wondered that. There's a debate, I've heard, among photographers about how involved to get. Many photogs think that representing the facts is their highest calling.

In situations of mass carnage ... war, famine, disaster ... one person isn't about to make a difference.

Plus, you don't know what happened immediately before, or after, the photo was taken.

This photo is so famous that when I google "napalm" it autofills "girl"

It's part of a video - you SHOULD see the whole thing, in "Hearts and Minds". People are running from a village that America has napalmed. Soldiers are trudging with them. Many soldiers pass the injured without a glance, but some stop to give the running wounded drinks of water, from their canteens. The girl in the center of this photo, who now lives in the USA, was one of the ones given a drink.

THIS photo is equally-famous. Pulitzer-Prize award-winning, even. All you have to do is start "vulture" and google suggests "girl".

The photographer, Kevin Carter, discusses how he was waiting for almost an hour for the vulture to open its wings, for a more dramatic photo, but in the end had to settle for this. When I get frustrated with things in my life, I think of this. It brings my life back into perspective.

The photographer was an activist with a heart. In the end, he committed suicide.

====

I'm of two minds about war/ disaster photographers and their role. Yes, they bring images of death and violence to us, images which we find horrific and gruesome. But then, so do Hollywood producers and videogame coders.

Audiences react ... or used to react, anyway ... differently more viscerally to photos and videos of REAL violence, as opposed to Hollywood violence. I'm not sure about now. But it seems to me that we NEED photos of violence and death, otherwise we just live in our comfortable bubble without having to confront the realities that others live with, and confront the at times the results of our policies.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

Per the vulture photo, I can't tell if the 'prey' in the photo is still alive or had died in that position.

I guess I could do a search, but don't really see the point.

If I'm a soldier, or photographer, and there's death, famine, injuries all around, my first obligation is to me and those in my group. If I start giving water, food, etc... to everyone around me, and I know what I have is insufficient to really do much good to ease their suffering, why bother ?

Say, for example, there's a village of scores of dying children, all about. I have rations for me, and maybe I've brought an extra supply, just in case. Assuming there's no real threat that I'll get stuck out in the wild somewhere, and can safely make it back to more food, water, shelter, etc... do I give a child some water, and extend its life a few more hours ? I am in no position to nurse anyone back to health. Giving out 1 energy bar, and a few sips of water... fine. But what about the 2,3, 9 other children, not pictured, who are in a similar state ?

I'm here to take pictures. I'm here to fight a war. What ever, I'm not here to serve as rescue squad for one, a few, a village, a country...

And you s start off w/ the desire to help, you'll quickly be inundated with more and more , expecting you to save them all.

It's a bit like trying to save a drowning person. If you can save one, and there are others in the area, they'll try to get on top of both of you, then no one gets saved. All may drown, you included.

How does one get the shot w/ out being IN that environment, but then, once you're there, you're changing the scene as it organically has occurred.

Yeah... I see what you guys are saying. I don't think I'd be able to do that job, but who knows... things just become your new "normal" after a while. I probably could have done it if I was drafted back in the day and was forced to do it. You'd kind of have to shut off all your emotions just to do it. I can definitely empathize with the guy who killed himself years later. I think the things that I have to live with are pretty bad, but that's nothing compared to watching a starving kid and a vulture for over an hour just waiting for the "perfect shot".

You bring up an interesting question about real gruesome vs fake gruesome, signy. Can we really even tell the difference anymore and are we just numb to it?

I go out of my way not to watch any of it, whether it's real things on YouTube or torture porn movies like Saw, so I'm probably more sensitive to it than most people are. But I really couldn't say.

I DO remember back when I was about 20 and the internet was pretty new to me. I had a program called iMesh at my first job that had internet access. It was like napster, but it just had a bunch of random crap to download. Most of the time you didn't even know what you were downloading. The names would be like "020432523.mpg".

One video I had downloaded was super grainy quality and black and white, but there was no mistaking it was real. I was actually physically ill after I had seen it. It turns out it was the public suicide of R. Budd Dwyer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._Budd_Dwyer

It was only later that I found out that the song "Hey Man, Nice Shot" from the band Filter that was out when I was in High School was about his suicide.

Also, more about the issue in the Philippines ...

Quote:

Seizing of Philippines city by Islamist militants a wake-up call for Southeast Asia

... over the next few hours the militants took control of most of the city, attacked the police station and stole weapons and ammunition, and set up roadblocks and positioned snipers on buildings at key approaches. The assault has already led to the death of almost 180 people and the vast majority of Marawi's population of about 200,000 has fled.

The seizing of the city by Maute and its allies on the island of Mindanao is the biggest warning yet that the Islamic State is building a base in Southeast Asia and bringing the brutal tactics seen in Iraq and Syria in recent years to the region.

Defense and other government officials from within the region told Reuters evidence is mounting that this was a sophisticated plot to bring forces from different groups who support the Islamic State together to take control of Marawi.

The presence of foreigners - intelligence sources say the fighters have included militants from as far away as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Chechnya and Morocco

Yanno, kind of like those freedom-loving jihadists in Syria ...

Quote:

alongside locals in Marawi, has particularly alarmed security officials.

... Defense and military officials in the Philippines said that all four of the country’s pro-Islamic State groups sent fighters to Marawi with the intention of establishing the city as a Southeast Asian ‘wilayat’ – or governorate - for the radical group.

Mindanao - roiled for decades by Islamic separatists, communist rebels, and warlords – was fertile ground for Islamic State's ideology to take root. This is the one region in this largely Catholic country to have a significant Muslim minority and Marawi itself is predominantly Muslim.

It is difficult for governments to prevent militants from getting to Mindanao from countries like Malaysia and Indonesia through waters that have often been lawless and plagued by pirates. ...

The Combating Terrorism Center, a West Point, New York-based think tank, said in a report this week that Islamic State is leveraging militant groups in Southeast Asia to solidify and expand its presence in the region. The key will be how well it manages relations with the region’s jihadi old guard, CTC said ...

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Just to go back to questions of personal humanity - what finally decided me to stop working in hospitals was that the suffering of others bothered me - a lot. And I could see that, if I were to continue, I'd either end up helplessly depressed, or I'd have to lose that empathic part of myself. I decided to leave that kind of work in order to preserve my soul.

Terrorists Raid Iran Parliament, Mausoleum; Gunmen, Suicide Bombers Leave At Least 12 Dead

errorist attackers raided Iran’s parliament and opened fire at the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini a few kilometers south of the capital on Wednesday morning, in near simultaneous assaults that killed at least 12 people, Reuters reported citing local media.

The first assault took place at 10.30am local time when the parliament was in session. Four gunmen walked into the parliament buildings and began shooting at visitors. Parliament is in lockdown and the police are reported by state media to be still hunting the gunmen. A bomb blast was subsequently reported at Iranian parliament killing one and injuring several, officials said as cited by local media.

In a second incident half an hour later, at least two people opened fire at the shrine of Ayatollah Khomeini. Several people are reported to have been injured there. One of the shrine attackers is reported to have killed himself by detonating an explosive vest. Another was shot dead.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks, AMAQ, a news agency close to the group, said. “Fighters from Islamic state attacked Khomeini’s shrine and the Iranian parliament in Tehran,” the news agency said.

"The atmosphere is tense. It is a blow to Rouhani. How can four armed men enter the parliament, where a very tight security has always been in place," said a senior official, who asked not to be named.

The attackers killed seven people and wounded several others, Tasmin said. The news agency also said there were unconfirmed reports that the attackers had taken four hostages inside the parliament building, although according to a subsequent report by Iran's PressTV all terrorists at the parliament had been killed.

Islamist militants storm school in southern Philippines, take students hostages

Pro-Islamic State militants stormed a school in the southern Philippines early on Wednesday and are holding several students hostage, police said, on the same island where fighting between government troops and Islamists has entered its fifth week.

A police report said about 300 armed men, among them members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), stormed a school in Pigcawayan town in North Cotabato province on Mindanao island and were holding some students captive.

Members of the BIFF were engaged in a gunbattle with the military, Chief Inspector Realan Mamon, the police chief at Pigcawayan, said in a radio interview.

"We can confirm that they occupied a school and there were civilians trapped. We are in the process of determining how many were trapped and their identities," Mamon said.

Pigcawayan is 190 km (120 miles) south of Marawi City, where BIFF militants, along with fighters from other groups allied to Islamic State, have been holed up and fighting the Philippines military since May 23.

Eliseo Garcesa, mayor of Pigcawayan town, told Philippine radio he was still seeking information about possible casualties.

Philippine aircraft and troops launched a renewed push against the militants in Marawi City on Tuesday and a military spokesman said the aim was to clear the area by the weekend Eid festival, although there was no deadline.
