Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

What has Trump done - as candidate or president - that's illegal?

I'm still trying to get a bead on that.

'His people talked to Russians!'
So ... ?

'His people tried to arrange communications with Putin!'
And ... ?

That's about what I'm getting out of it. So maybe someone can explain to me, what has Trump done - as candidate or president - that's illegal?

Well, for one there's:

Of course, as it states in the video, Congress holds the key, and since Congress is controlled by the republicans, nothing will be done. And nothing has been done, so, next case.

Then there's the "Travel Ban" of Muslims; it is illegal because it has been deemed Unconstitutional. NEXT!

Well, this next one isn't so much illegal as it is unethical; claiming that Obama, our glorious 44th, "wiretapped" Schlump Tower - Bzzzzzzzzap, wrong...never happened.

As far as his "people" talking to Russians, no law against that. Diplomatic relations by the White House and State Department are a top priority, through proper and well-established channels. Now, I'm not going to pretend I know those proper channels personally, but I do pay attention:

Kushner, it has been reported, requested that a secret communication within the Russian consulate be made with direct contact with Moscow. This was back in December 2016, during the transition and way before the inauguration of trump. There can be only one POTUS at a time, plus it could very well be considered espionage. Now, why would anyone want to speak secretly with the Russian government, with Russian-controlled equipment and in Russian-controlled environment?

Apparently his security clearance, it has been suggested, will be revoked. He is under investigation as a person of interest by the FBI. We will soon find out if Mr. Kushner broke the law. It seems very likely. Mr. Flynn and Mr. Manafort will have company shortly.

Not Illegal. No cites in the video, just vague references. If you have a problem with it vote more Democrats in Congress to put a swift end to it in 1 1/2 years. Next.

No law was broken. Trump tried to get it through and it was struck down because it was deemed unconstitutional. Next

Nothing you mentioned so far is illegal.

As I stated in J0's thread, assuming this is true and without more evidence all this means is that Kushner requested a secret communication with Russia.

Time will tell.

Still no answers to your question 1kiki.

I know it was a rhetorical question, at least at the time you wrote it.

Actually, I really want to know. The media's been buzzing. Speculation is rampant. Opinions are everywhere. Fingers point one way. Then another. Then yet another. Vague accusations and innuendo that 'something' isn't right are coming faster than snow in a blizzard.

But I haven't been able to tell what's been done that's so awful. What, specifically was done? The most I can get out of it is the deep state is in a panic because Trump's not going along with the anti-Russia campaign.

He fired James Comey for no good reason, except
apparently, Comey's version of their discussions
is much different from Trump's.

As Comey has a better reputation for honesty &
integrity than Trump, I'm sure I'd believe him
over our president.

I regard the firing as an attempted cover-up.

If Comey was not given 2 weeks notice of his
termination, isn't that illegal?

I don't think there's a single state in the union that requires two week notice for being fired. Most states are "at will" states, so even if you are being laid off they don't have to give you any notice.

To my knowledge the only "2 week rule" is that it's professional courtesy that if you're going to quit your job that you give them two weeks notice, but there's no law saying you have to. Just don't expect a good reference if you just take off.

I wouldn't think any politicians or government employees get special treatment from that. I could be wrong. If he had a contract that said he had to have a 2 week notice prior to termination than they would be in violation of that clause. I don't think that would be illegal, but it would be a breech of contract and he would probably be able to sue.

Not illegal. Trump is Comey's boss and he works at the pleasure of his boss. Next?

No. If there is someone is place who can do a great deal of damage in that two weeks, it's entirely appropriate to escort someone out immediately, and change the locks behind them. That's what happened to our main computer programmer. Next!

Quote:

[Emoluments clause - SGG]
This is to prevent a conflict of interest. The concern is that a President's or Ambassador's decision might be influenced by gifts or future gifts. Our agency has a strict ethics policy which prevents us from accepting any gift whatsoever, or letting a contract or purchase which might benefit our investments. The answer to that is to recuse yourself from the decision. Since Trump no longer actively manages his portfolio, it seems that he's recused himself already. Plus, the payments made by foreign governments to Trump's business concerns are diffused through the layers and layers of managers, executives etc.; they don't go to Trump directly. Certainly worth thinking about, but not illegal. Next?

Quote:

Ultimately to be decided by the Supreme Court, uncertain outcome. But just because a President poses an Executive Order which is (later) found to be unconstitutional doesn't mean the President has broken ant laws. NEXT!

Because Trump doesn't trust the security state? Say, SHINY, with all of the LEAKS of CLASSIFIED INFORMATION coming from ANONYMOUS SOURCES< do you think that maybe trump had a reason NOT to trust some of his security staff?

Quote:

So (a) Not Trump and (b) we don't know if anyone broke any laws. Just because someone is under investigation doesn't mean they're "guilty". Manafort, as far as I an tell, broke no laws. I'm more concerned about Fynn .... not so much that he took a speaking fee from the Russians and didn't report it (OH! THE HORROR!) but because he was supposedly discussing kidnapping Gulen and shipping him back to Turkey. Is that what our "security agencies" DO??? I mean, was this an average run-of-the-mill sort of discussion?

There's a Special Counsel on the job about this, one who can bring criminal charges against those found to have broken the law. Once he was appointed, the prss should just let him do his job and sort out fact form fiction. But clearly, the press just keep thumping rumors and squeezing out even more rumors from (three, maybe four) "anonymous sources". They're not interested in "getting to the bottom" of potential wrongdoing, but in printing a torrent of bullshit and running an endless smear campaign.

In another thread, Oonj mentioned she was old enough to remember when people LIKED their presidents. Maybe Kennedy and before.

But I pulled a list of every single president since Kennedy, and I have to say, it's been EXTREMELY partisan since then. This country has been at political war for decades.

What's becoming more overt over time is how far the Deep State has gotten when it comes to running foreign policy, military policy, and even economic policy - above and beyond the political divide.

The Deep State now controls both parties. Trump is an anomaly in the overall process. He ran in a primary against 17 -SEVENTEEN!- vetted Tea Party-esque politicians - who knew full well who butters their bread and who would never challenge the Deep State on international policy - and won. Whether that's meaningful in terms of what Trump does is yet to be seen. But the Deep State is running the shit show against Trump. Democrats are merely lackeys to it. And republicans are carefully walking a tightrope.

Three Leakers Of Classified White House Information Said To Be Identified, Expected To Be Fired

As reported over the weekend, having returned from his first foreign trip president Trump is preparing a "war room" in response to the barrage of Russian news blanketing the media, and plans to restructure the White House communications strategy and possibly staffing.

There have been rumors around Washington that press secretary Sean Spicer's job is in danger (and that Jared Kushner, the focus of much of the latest newsflow, may be forced to take a "step back") but the White House has denied these rumors. In an interview with Fox News' Jeanine Pirro earlier this month, Trump said Spicer has been "doing a good job but he gets beat up."

But the biggest issue plaguing the White House at this moment is the seemingly relentless leakage of confidential information surrounding Trump's activities, with Trump administration officials saying last week the recent high-profile leaks of classified information are "coordinated and timed."

And in a new development, CBS News has confirmed that three leakers of classified information at the White House have been identified and are expected to be fired.

According to CBS, "officials within the Trump White House believe leaks of Mr. Trump's conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov are a "deliberate attempt" by officials who are holdovers from President Obama's administration and are trying to damage the Trump presidency."

Last week, the Trump campaign released an email to supporters entitled "SABOTAGE," in which the campaign said, "There are people within our own unelected bureaucracy that want to sabotage President Trump and our entire America First movement."

The White House has yet to announce any terminations or staff reallignment. Instead, overnight Trump took another swipe at reports that his Twitter privileges may be removed, saying that "the Fake News Media works hard at disparaging & demeaning my use of social media because they don't want America to hear the real story!"

Well, if they leaked CLASSIFIED information, getting fired should be the least of their problems. But this will have to be sorted out with actual... yanno ... EVIDENCE.

Not sure if it's valid yet. But so far the White House has yet to be able to disprove anything that's coming out. As a matter of fact, everything the White House has said about accusations connecting them to Russia in the news have turned out to be lies.

Sources: Russians discussed potentially 'derogatory' information about Trump and associates during campaign

(CNN) — Russian government officials discussed having potentially "derogatory" information about then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and some of his top aides in conversations intercepted by US intelligence during the 2016 election, according to two former intelligence officials and a congressional source.

One source described the information as financial in nature and said the discussion centered on whether the Russians had leverage over Trump's inner circle. The source said the intercepted communications suggested to US intelligence that Russians believed "they had the ability to influence the administration through the derogatory information."

You have a very treasonous view of how justice in the US should work.

In fact, you have many other treasonous views as well. You hate the election process and want to void it, you really dislike freedom of speech and want to lock people up who engage in it, you're a-ok with extra-judicial killing, even of American citizens, you despise fourth amendment protections from search and seizure, and you hold the safety and security of other countries above those of the US.

The saving grace of Donald Trump as president is his incompetence. He knows almost nothing of how the federal government works. He seems to have been repeatedly surprised by the checks and balances written into the Constitution by the Founding Fathers. And he seems uninterested in learning.

Effectively, we have no president. Rather, we have someone who plays the president on television and on Twitter. Aside from a few of his pet subjects, such as immigration, Trump seems to have almost no effect on the workings of the federal government. What we have seen is a demonstration that government is actually a fairly robust establishment even without a president.

The less control Trump has over the federal government, the better. Think of it this way: Which would be more dangerous, a Mafia family overseen by the cruel and competent Michael Corleone, or one led by his ineffectual brother Fredo? So, I say, Let Donald be Fredo.

Winter is coming

For all that Trump’s tenure in office has been chaotic and controversial, the fundamental reality remains that we are in the springtime of his administration, and winter could arrive much more quickly than he seems to realize.

Normally when a new president of a new party takes office, it’s because the previous administration left the country mired in economic crisis. Trump, by contrast, took over during a broadly okay time and replaces a predecessor whose approval ratings were sky-high. There was no immediate crisis on his plate to resolve, and he has not yet weathered one.

This is unlikely to keep up, to put it mildly. Over the next three and a half years, there will probably be a recession or a bank panic or a terrorist attack or a war or a massive natural disaster or a scary epidemic, or any of the dozens of other terrifying events that challenge an administration. It’s only when that happens that we will have a full view of the mettle of Trump and his team. Based on what we’ve seen so far, that’s a scary prospect.

Jeeze SECOND, you're just as sleazy as the rest of the democraps. In denial of the results of OUR democracy in action; completely out of ideas on how to connect with Americans over the problems they're facing and so offer an alternative; unable to mount at least a token political opposition and so colluding with the Deep State in a soft coup - you can hardly wait for the country to fail - and FOR MILLIONS OF AMERICANS TO SUFFER - just so you can get rid of Trump.

What a perverted little golum you are.

First things first, 1kiki. Trump won by 80,000 votes in the right spots of the right states. If he was so obviously suited to be the savior for the USA he would have won by millions of votes. Come to think of it, if Bernie was so obviously a potential savior of the USA he would not have lost the Democratic primary by 3,775,437 votes. Hell's bells, that is even more than Trump's loss in the popular vote to Hillary.

What a perverted golum you are.

The more you write, 1kiki, the more you prove you will never understand why problems hang around for decades.

Second thing is that I live in the Republican dominated state of Texas. About 1/3rd of Texans vote, leaving everything completely out of the control of the other 2/3rd of Texans. Voting Republicans only need to be 1/6th plus one more person of the population to be able to boss around the other 5/6th of Texans. Doesn’t sound that fair when such a small percent of the population can toy with the lives of everyone else, but that is the system.

Third thing, 1kiki, is that it will cost a great deal of money to correct “FOR MILLIONS OF AMERICANS” the problems they “SUFFER”. I am simply carrying over your all-caps description. Guess what is wrong with politics? I’ll tell you because you will guess wrong: the 1/6th of Texans who vote don’t want to pay to solve other people’s problems, even if it is millions of Texans who have problems.

A more startling insight is that in nearly every state other than Texas, the voters don’t want to pay to correct problems millions of Americans suffer. I know that Trump and Bernie claimed they had solutions to problems where Bernie's solutions were nearly free and Trump was claiming that he could do it even better and cheaper. Bernie and Trump were blowing hot air.

I’d say the problem with politics is the voters won’t pay to solve problems for anyone but themselves. Each voter wants a political system that exclusively solves only their unique little problems and excludes everyone else from the solution. Voters won’t choose politicians from any party that will solve the problems shared by millions because that would cost the voters too much money. And this is where American politics has been stuck all my life: wanting solutions but not willing to pay.

The American political system follows a recipe, same as a pineapple upside down cake has a recipe, except the political cake has a two cups of salt added. Delicious! But it would taste better without the salt. The recipe for the political system will not be rewritten to lower the voting age so that everyone affected can vote. It won't be overhauled to require everyone to vote. Gerrymandering will not be outlawed in America. And Americans won't grow a conscience to care about anyone except their immediate family. So the tasty American future with Bernie governing will not occur. Our political problems have been baked into the cake by the federal and states constitutions and voting laws.

1kiki, you might have to revise your explanation when you consider Texas political history. The governor of Texas sitting in the limousine with Kennedy when he was shot was Democrat John Connally. John went to work for Nixon. Heard of Nixon? Typical honest Republican. John switched parties to become a Republican since Nixon was a very attractive person. The entire state of Texas swapped parties to join with Nixon. There hasn’t been a Democrat elected to a statewide office since Hillary was in college because Republican politicians are so beautiful. I’m pretty sure the switch in Texas had nothing to do with the Democratic party becoming full of power-hungry, bad people plus Hillary and all good Texans wanting to escape the badness and Hillary. There must have been something else, but what? You will have to consult the Texas Handbook to find out the reason.

Are you talking about the free alternatives? The one where 11,000,000 jobs open up by deporting 11,000,000 illegal aliens? Or the other free alternative, which both Bernie and Trump were offering, where renegotiating trade treaties creates 20,000,000 new factory jobs? You are kind of gullible, aren't you 1kiki?

I forgot the third free alternative, exclusive to Trump, creating hundreds of thousands of new coal mining jobs for the insignificant cost of changing some rules about air and water pollution.

There is a fourth alternative, exclusive to Trump, creating millions of jobs by lowering taxes on the wealthy. That is the best alternative of all because Trump promised that the new jobs would more than offset the loss in tax revenue. Trillions of dollars will be saved, according to Trump.

I keep forgetting wonderful alternatives. Cancelling Obamacare and passing Trumpcare will save trillions and insure millions of more people will have much better health insurance. Bernie was selling the same free dream, but he called his "Medicare for All" instead of Trumpcare.

Since you don't have a copy of the Texas Handbook, 1kiki, I will give you a hint about the political history of Texas. While White Texans were migrating from Democrat to Republican in 1970, Black Texans were migrating in the opposite direction. I’ve heard white Republicans whisper that blacks are prejudiced, maybe blacks are even bigoted. Oh, dear! Maybe blacks in Texas are racists and that is why they left the Republican party after 100 years of voting exclusively for Republicans since Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation!

There is only 1 black Republican left in Texas and she is the daughter of a slave.

Here's what democrats could promise:

A fair set of rules that everyone is made to live by, SECOND. Rules that say if banks tank the global economy, they pay the price themselves. They don't get rewarded while we pay to make them whole. Rules that say people are first in line to be represented by the government, instead of businesses. Rules that make loan companies and banks run their business fairly, and honestly. Rules that say people have to be given an honest day's pay for an honest day's work. Rules that give people the same tax breaks as businesses - or better, give businesses the same tax breaks as people. Rules that hold international corporations accountable, instead of benefiting and protecting them at our expense.

It's free. And it certainly is well within the democrats' abilities - after all, they're in the business of making the rules. If the democrats promised that, people would come out to vote. Because a lot of people are tired of being taken advantage of by both the corporations AND the government.

That's what democrats could do. They could promise fair rules.

That's Occupy Wall Street rhetoric, that's Bernie talk.
I find those suggestions very unexciting compared to eternal life which gets promised every Sunday in churches across the nation. How many Americans quit one church and switch to another when they don't immediately get eternal life? Democrats and Republicans could make the same promise and nobody would be the wiser that neither could deliver Eternity.

Knowing how little people pay attention, the Democrats and/or the Republicans could promise and not deliver any change but they would get the votes any way. While you are at it, promise 5% GNP growth per year, $20 per hour minimum wage. ($15/hr is probably more believable. Don't need to deliver on the promise; blame the opposition for it not passing into law)

Sorry to not take your suggestions seriously. It will require 67 Senators to pass even one of your suggestions over the veto of any President in history, past or future, including FDR. That requires both Democrats and Republicans working together against the President.

Not really. Because Occupy Wall Street was limited to one topic, and they weren't in a position to do anything. And Bernie was talking about expanding social programs using tax money.

I'm talking about something different. I'm talking about a revamping of how our politicians could work for us. I'm talking about what Trump, in his boorish way, intuited when he talked about manufacturing going overseas, the unfairness of 'free trade' agreements, and US factories being idle.

People aren't looking for handouts. They're pissed off at being ripped off at every step.

But I do have to say, you're a shining example of why the democrats will continue to lose, from state legislatures to governorships, to congress, the WH and the Supreme Court. Your complete disdain for the actual voting public comes through in true democratic fashion.

Well done.

You have a very treasonous view of how justice in the US should work, THUGGER. In fact, you have many other treasonous views as well. You hate the election process and want to void it.

In fact, you have many other treasonous views as well. You hate the election process and want to void it, you really dislike freedom of speech and want to lock people up who engage in it [made up], you're a-ok with extra-judicial killing, even of American citizens, you despise fourth amendment protections from search and seizure, and you hold the safety and security of other countries above those of the US.

You're just a real 'patriot', aren't you?

Yep, not to take away from KIKI's argument that Democrats could gain a lot of support by simply changing the rules of the game ... instead of, yanno, promising handouts ...

Just to get back to this post: I think THUGR should be investigated for treason.

By the way, there has been an idea floating around for years called "the 28th Amendment" which would outlaw corporations. It's a great idea, and the Democratic Party should get behind it. But I'm sure they won't, because they know which side their bread is buttered on!

We can also forget about meaningful tax reform, and meaningful banking reform, and all of those other ideas that KIKI brought up and SECOND so disdainfully dismissed.

That's what these many investigations are trying to reveal. It's possible that he has not done anything illegal, just grossly ignorant and dumb enough that it could make our president easily susceptible to extortion. If he's in debt to Russia to the tune of millions of dollars (not illegal), wouldn't you recognize that as a bad thing? If he's proven to have lied and obstructed our justice system wouldn't you call those impeachable offenses?

Then there are the many actions by this president that have caused a lot of people to wonder what he's covering up. No tax returns, firing Flynn 18 days after hearing about his collusion, firing Comey, Kushner "forgetting" to include meetings with Russians (come on!), continued lying on his own twitter feed (omg). And there's more - all together there's just too much to not want to investigate and find out what the truth is. Don't you want your president to be honest? Or at least more honest than this slug?

==============================

So far to date, all Impeachments of U.S. Presidents have been for acts committed while in office.
So Obama might not be off the hook, but do you think Trump would be?

Why are you not asking about Slick Willie's medical records?
