“He used his relationship with me as a shield … so no one would question his relationships with other women or scrutinize his writing as anything other than feminist,” she writes
Kai Cole | August 20, 2017
...
I’ve been asked some questions by the press recently about my divorce from Joss Whedon, to whom I was married for 16 years. There is misinformation out there and I feel the best way to clear up the situation is to tell my truth. Let me begin by saying I am a very private person and the act of writing this is antithetical to who I am and everything I stand for. Yet, at the same time, I feel compelled to go on the record and clear up some misperceptions. I don’t think it is fair to me or other women to remain silent any longer.

I met Joss in 1991. I was driving across the country from Massachusetts on a whim, and met him when I was passing through Los Angeles. We fell in love and I moved to L.A. so we could be together.

I was with him when his “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” script was adapted, and the resulting movie released. It was painful to see how his vision was interpreted by the production team and on our honeymoon to England in 1995, I urged him to figure out how to turn it into a TV show. He didn’t want to work in television anymore, following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, but I convinced him it was the fastest way to get the experience he needed, so he could direct his own films someday. I had no idea, in that lovely garden in Bath, that it would change everything.

There were times in our relationship that I was uncomfortable with the attention Joss paid other women. He always had a lot of female friends, but he told me it was because his mother raised him as a feminist, so he just liked women better. He said he admired and respected females, he didn’t lust after them. I believed him and trusted him. On the set of “Buffy,” Joss decided to have his first secret affair.

Fifteen years later, when he was done with our marriage and finally ready to tell the truth, he wrote me, “When I was running ‘Buffy,’ I was surrounded by beautiful, needy, aggressive young women. It felt like I had a disease, like something from a Greek myth. Suddenly I am a powerful producer and the world is laid out at my feet and I can’t touch it.” But he did touch it. He said he understood, “I would have to lie — or conceal some part of the truth — for the rest of my life,” but he did it anyway, hoping that first affair, “would be ENOUGH, that THEN we could move on and outlast it.”

Joss admitted that for the next decade and a half, he hid multiple affairs and a number of inappropriate emotional ones that he had with his actresses, co-workers, fans and friends, while he stayed married to me. He wrote me a letter when our marriage was falling apart, but I still didn’t know the whole truth, and said, “I’ve never loved anyone or wanted to be with anyone in any real or long-term way except for you ever. And I love our life. I love how you are, how we are, who you are and what we’ve done both separately and together, how much fun we have…” He wanted it all; he didn’t want to choose, so he accepted the duality as a part of his life.

Then later, after he confessed everything, he told me, “I let myself love you. I stopped worrying about the contradiction. As a guilty man I knew the only way to hide was to act as though I were righteous. And as a husband, I wanted to be with you like we had been. I lived two lives.” When he walked out of our marriage, and was trying to make “things seem less bewildering” to help me understand how he could have lied to me for so long, he said, “In many ways I was the HEIGHT of normal, in this culture. We’re taught to be providers and companions and at the same time, to conquer and acquire — specifically sexually — and I was pulling off both!”

Despite understanding, on some level, that what he was doing was wrong, he never conceded the hypocrisy of being out in the world preaching feminist ideals, while at the same time, taking away my right to make choices for my life and my body based on the truth. He deceived me for 15 years, so he could have everything he wanted. I believed, everyone believed, that he was one of the good guys, committed to fighting for women’s rights, committed to our marriage, and to the women he worked with. But I now see how he used his relationship with me as a shield, both during and after our marriage, so no one would question his relationships with other women or scrutinize his writing as anything other than feminist.

I thought we were a couple, a team. I was a powerful influence on the career choices Joss made during the 20 years we were together (we lived together for four years before marrying). I kept him grounded, and helped him find the quickest way to the success he so deeply craved. I loved him. And in return, he lied to me. A lot. He said, after he left, he understood: “It’s not just like I killed you, but that I’d done it subtly, over years. That I’d been poisoning you. Chipping away at you.” He made me doubt my own instincts and watched me move further away from my personal values and social mores, trying to connect with him, never telling me it was impossible. By the time he finally confessed the truth, 15 years after his first affair on the set of “Buffy,” I was broken. My brain could not fit my experience of our life together, through the new lens of his deceit.

My entire reality changed overnight, and I went from being a strong, confident woman, to a confused, frightened mess. I was eventually diagnosed with Complex PTSD and for the last five years, I have worked hard to make sense of everything that happened and find my balance again. It has not been easy, because even though in my personal life I have been completely open about what happened, publicly people only know his superficial presentation of us: him as the lovable geek-feminist and me in the background, as his wife and supporter.

We’re finally divorced; I’m doing architecture again, and slowly getting my life and self-esteem back.

Until recently, Joss was still letting the illusion of our marriage stay intact. Now that it is finally public, I want to let women know that he is not who he pretends to be. I want the people who worship him to know he is human, and the organizations giving him awards for his feminist work, to think twice in the future about honoring a man who does not practice what he preaches. But no matter what happens, or how people interpret this statement, I no longer have to carry the burden of Joss’ long-term deceit and confessions. I am free.

Editor’s Note: A spokesperson for Joss Whedon provided the following response, “While this account includes inaccuracies and misrepresentations which can be harmful to their family, Joss is not commenting, out of concern for his children and out of respect for his ex-wife.”

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

While I really like Firefly, I don't worship Joss and I never thought of him as a feminist. So while I feel sorry for his ex-wife, I feel the open letter is somewhat misdirected, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Also, I think Joss is politically naive. Firefly was his only show (that I know of) that actually provided a credible presentation of the "other side" (i.e non-liberals); Joss himself said that The Alliance was the United States. I suppose Blue Sun is something like Amazon?

But in Serenity the conceit was that all you would have to do is show how The Alliance committed some terrible perverted genocidal act of social control and that the population would rise up and ... are you kidding me?

In real life, you CAN stop the signal, especially between the ear and the brain!

Anyway, I asked SHINY what living with a narcissist must be like ... maybe this is a good description.

By the way, GSTRING, I predicted your response PERFECTLY

Good director, messed up as a relationship person. Most artsy people are a little tweaked....

Can't blame his ex for being mad. Wonder if she ended up with an STD, there's a ton or two in Hollyweird... Wonder which actresses it was, too...

I'm pretty sure he'd still be 1000 times better directing than you, JSF.

She's just as much of a pig as he is. I guess she didn't extort enough money out of him in the divorce. She's got a net worth of 100 million dollars.

As if their kids weren't going to be f-ed up enough from being raised by hollywood elites with this kind of money, they have to now deal with all their parent's dirty laundry being aired in the public eye.

They can both go look at the sun with glasses off of Amazon tomorrow.

what?
CA is an equality state for divorce and property, so she automatically gets half of what the 2 of them made from before the Buffy film til 2007. And he claims to support wimyn equality.
So what's your beef?

So, you're not impressed that Joss tried to write a script for a Wonder Woman movie, and failed, tried to emulate the life of the creator of Wonder Woman comics, and failed, married Wonder Woman, and the marriage failed, then Wonder Woman was executive producer on her movie, and succeeded? We won't really know how successful for two months, but here is to hope!

Yeah. It's obvious that this is not a pleasant split, so their kids are already going through hell.

Feminist Playbook, Rule 285: If your rich and powerful husband cheats on you than milk it for what it is worth, and bonus points if you can further exploit it to advance your own career. (Who gives a shit about the kids?)

Remember, you got a free get out of jail card. You can behave as bad as you want and it's all his fault now.

WTF are you talking about, lady. You live in California where you could get a no fault divorce and split with half of his cash by the end of the week.

You had choices for both your life, your body and for truth, justice and the American way or whatever the hell you wanted to do. You chose to stay with Joss because he was a rising star and you wanted that cash.

You never fail to show you are a complete idiot. She isn't allowed to say anything about his horrible behavior because she has CHILDREN?? You ever think that is does the kids good to acknowledge that their parents aren't perfect?? Not to put anyone on a pedestal is a good thing. It was HIS screwing around that broke up the family, it wasn't HER fault. I'm sure she was busy raising the kids, and it is very easy to hide things you have done when you have Joss's money and the time to do what he wanted to do.

The damn media didn't even know anything about the divorce for FIVE YEARS.
I'd say she waited long enough and showed plenty of restraint...

Once again, it is a VERY good thing you are single. If someone did to YOU what Joss did, you would be bellowing from the heavens for the rest of your life.

There was plenty to milk, and I alluded to it in the post. I also said that it was a 50/50 state, so that's not new information you bring to the table.

She either knew what was going on, or she's a complete idiot Stepford Wife type. Everything else she says about herself contradicts the Stepford Wife theory. I'm just taking her word for that.

50% of what Joss had 16 years ago was markedly less than 50% of what she got in the divorce when it finally happened.

I also get the idea from this that it was Joss that ended the marriage when it finally ended. It doesn't seem like she was in any hurry to stop spending the money he was making while he was at the top of his career making all these big movies with huge pay days.

You're good at research.

Go dig up what she would have made divorcing him during the middle of Buffy's run compared to what she actually got. I'm not going to bother myself, but she sure as shit would not have a net worth of 100 million dollars today if she did.

You're wrong. The laws of ownership are very clear in California. The personal property brought into the marriage remains personal property. Everything else is held in common and is split 50/50. There's nothing to 'milk'. It's all very cut and dried.

eta: California became a 50/50 state specifically to avoid all the court time and public expense from divorces where one side tried to prove the other side was wrong-er so as to collect more money.

So, aside from a lot of conjecture - you got nothing.

In case you didn't think of this, I presume Joss knew as well that the state is a 50/50 state. Since he was screwing around, and for sure HE knew he was screwing around, he could have saved himself a ton of money by asking for a divorce a long time ago. Yanno, about the time he started screwing around.

I'm going to presume he was arrogant enough to think he could have it all - a devoted wife and good-guy creds on the one hand, and chronic infidelity on the other.

What a guy.

Learn to read. The longer she stayed with him, the more money she stood to make. If she divorced him during Buffy, she would have gotten practically nothing compared to staying with him as long as she did.

Yeah. I know what 50/50 means. Not a factor here. 50 percent of 1997 Joss was less than 50 percent of 2000 Joss was less than 50 percent of 2005 Joss....

I think you're right and he did think he could have it all. I also think that he really took stock of the situation and decided that he no longer thought that she was part of having it all anymore and decided to split the 50/50 before his next few big movies came out and he had to give her even more.

Others have questioned whether it's possible to be a feminist and a cheater. The answer is of course yes. Although I guess it depends on your definition of 'feminism' which has seemed to have radically changed as of late. But it is possible to support full equality among the sexes, and still cheat on your spouse. I'm not condoning adultery, but it's a separate issue. Lots of women cheat on their husbands too. I wouldn't assert that this makes them sexist towards men though. It makes them unfaithful to their partner.

lipsticklesbiankickboxer • 5 hours ago

I always knew there was something phony about Whedon's "feminism".

I personally don't care what he has done, or will do, in a persons personal life. I just love his movies and tv shows. If women want more than they better get out and raise some Hell, because this Administration is about to take all of them rights You fought for.

the commenters using this one man cheating on his wife as a reason to hate on feminists or liberals are pathetic. you trolls are the lowest of the low, which is why you feel the need to hate on everything and everyone to make yourself feel better. guess what? you only make yourself look like an idiot.

there's a video on youtube I saw years ago of Summer Glau on the red carpet for 'Serenity'. in it she is being interviewed and halfway through answering, joss walks up behind her and kisses her on the cheek to say 'hello.' I always thought it was a weird moment because I had never seen him act like that before and because I knew he was married. I shook it off as, 'oh, he must just be really sweet and affectionate,' but I guess my initial reaction of feeling uncomfortable was correct.

Yep...

She's trying to ruin him, and it looks like she might be succeeding. I don't know how much of Joss's fanbase is a bunch of whiny SJW feminist twats. I guess we'll find out.

Sorry Joss. I like a lot of your shit. The closest I ever came to being a fanboy of anything was joining this site back around 2006. That wouldn't have lasted long for me but I stuck around for the RWED.

You probably just should have kept your mouth shut and kept all of your political opinions to yourself and just put them in your media.

I hope THIS serves as the actual lesson to big names in the future. Nobody wants to hear your political views. Fans are fickle, and all it takes is one letter from an angry ex and they turn on you.

Joss ruined himself. This only supports what I & others said about Joss when he viciously attacked women on their looks, intelligence, calling them whores , etc..,

What about it??

He was suppose to be different. I thought so, at least.

I don't think he did anything different than a ton of male and female people do in powerful positions. There isn't a lot of virtue in the world, contrary to what we're taught by Disney flicks growing up.

The jury is still out on if he ruined himself. A fan site closing doesn't mean anything. That wasn't bringing in any cash. He's still a talented guy and I think he has a lot of projects ahead of him.

Hypocrisy was his problem. You can't virtue signal on a daily basis on one side and then do despicable shit on the other and expect to get away with it forever. He got called out. If he's smart, he keeps his mouth shut now and stays off of Twitter.

This ain't exactly the days of Rob Lowe. This shit happens every day and we all know it. The future of Joss's career now is probably largely in the hands of the SJWs that once loved him. How far will they now go in efforts to destroy him?

What I find extremely funny is that a large section of the Left today is behaving no differently than the Religious Right during the 80's and 90's.

I have. Everything is political: the promises Trump is keeping are essentially the ones that would have fit nicely as Heritage Foundation PDFs or little Twitter cards from Paul Ryan’s “Better Way” push. Trump the political disruptor is gone. Instead we’ve just got Trump the under-qualified doofus.

As recently as January, Trump was vowing to develop a health care plan that would cover everyone. The congressional Republican health care bills he endorsed did not. Nor did they fulfill campaign pledges to protect Medicaid, or lower premiums and deductibles. His budget proposal quietly ditched his campaign pledge to avoid cutting Social Security. His Treasury Secretary conceded Monday that his administration won’t really be closing the notorious “carried interest” tax loophole. He keeps saying he’ll raise taxes on the wealthy, but his administration’s actual plans do the reverse.

How could two phonies, two entertainers that run their mouths too much without trying enough to make sense, like Joss and Trump, not get along better?

Now the left is doing exactly the same thing.

No. But you're fooling yourself if you think it's a strictly partisan thing.

The Republicans had a great tool for doing this with religion for a long time, but as the younger generations stopped going to church and especially after the Catholic church was outed for protecting pedophile priests, they lost that tool of control.

Democrats didn't make the "Patriot" Act.

Although I'm sure it would have happened under Obama if it hadn't already been enacted by GWB.

America does not have a Religion Government, a Religion State, Religious Nanny Government, Religious Nanny State, nor has it ever. The Governments of and within The United States do not control, coerce, incentivize through Religion, and there us no State (Government) Religion. The First Amendment seems to prohibit.
The Nanny Government (State) cannot have been enacted, enforced, or run by or through Religion. (Other than the Liberal Religion of Government )
Government control and restriction of Life, Happiness of children (aka Nanny State) and Government overruling Parental Rights and Responsibility has been a covenant of Radical Lefty Extremists. As well as abdication of Parental Rights.
You are not making sense. Can you provide example of widespread Nanny State Government taking childrearing away from Parents enacted by a group other than Liberals, Radicals, Lefty Extremists, Democrats, Progressives, Communists, Socialists, Marxists, Maoists, Stalinists, Feminists?
Quote:

Democrats didn't make the "Patriot" Act.

What does The Patriot Act have anything to do with long history of Government Nanny State intrusion into family and child control? Does Patriot Act take children away from Parents, require indoctrination of children into Government brainwashing, control and restriction? Did Hilliary include Patriot Act in the Nanny State opus that she slapped her name on, It Takes A Village?

John Lithgow's character is a fictional person from a movie, some 33 years ago.

Honestly, that's a pretty low patch of ground to plant your flag in when discussing political ideologies.

If you want to talk about 'nanny state', deal w/ the laws and how law makers from both parties view govt. One party wants to control our intake of sugary drinks, use of tobacco, and what cars to drive. One party has members who state " It takes a long time ... to control the people " John Dingell (Democrat- MI ), or openly claims that " Government is the one thing which we all belong to " Democratic Party convention video, 2012.

Which party is the party of the Nanny State ? It's not even close

Obviously, the opposite of reality.

Or did you think Hollywood is the Real World?

Is your reliance on Hollywood storyline facts responsible for your Nanny State delusions?

Except it ISN'T fiction here. I sat and listened to a man have a discussion with his pastor (when my kid was in school) and then tell his daughter "See, I told you the pastor would say you can't get your ears pierced, and what pastor says, goes."

Later, I was standing next to the pastor's daughter as she waited for her father to pick her up and she was jittery so I asked if she was ok, she said "I really really need to go pee, but dad won't like it if I make him wait." The bathroom was 30 ft away, by the way. The "kid" was 17.
These people are the embodiment of Lithgow's character...

I knew a girl who had graduated college, and her parents didn't want her driving her car after dark. Not for any eye sight conditions, but she was a single girl and things go wrong when single women drive alone after dark.

There are overly cautious and even domineering parents. Beyond absurd when I was in my early 20's, but as I've gotten older, and understand what parents deal w/ in trying to keep their kids safe, it's less 'crazy'.

And then add religious component into the mix, and yeah, I can see how it can happen. But those are individuals , and no where near indicative of an entire political party. Not by a long shot.

Yes, the Christian moral majority types were having a field day in the 80's. But I contend that the bigger threat to over zealous social structure of the fundies is the tyrannical oppression of a Imperial Federal govt.

The former was a mere blip on the radar, while the latter... continues to grow and intrude upon our freedoms. By far the bigger danger of the 2.

Fair enough. I agree with all of that.

I grew up in the 80's, so that's how it was when I was younger. I can't speak to anything that predates that from personal experience.

It's scary when MTV was the counter-culture of my youth and about rebelling against authority, and now they're the Social Justice Warrior recruiting base and a mouthpiece for the Nanny State.

The times, they are a changin'...

EDIT: BTW.... has anybody else gotten huge spikes in the prices of their soda? Crook County, IL just rolled out their 1 cent per ounce soda tax last month. Now everybody goes to the neighboring counties and stocks up it to avoid it.

That's a $1.44 tax on a 12 pack of cans and a $0.68 tax on a 2 liter.

I bet if I really wanted to I could go back in the history here and pull up at least a dozen times where I said that if you people don't stand up for smokers that they'd be coming after you next.

They've already maxed out what they can charge for smokes and alcohol without losing all of that revenue to people quitting or just developing a black market for the stuff.

You're next.

As I recall, MTV started out simply being about ... music. There wasn't anything particularly rebellious about, save for loud rock and roll, and maybe a few alternative type bands tossed in for good measure. It was fun for fun's sake.

IMO, that all changed in the early 90's when it sidled up w/ Bill Clinton and the 'Rock the Vote ' campaign, along w/ promoting Motor Voter. Then we started getting snarky Tabitha Soren...

( As a 19-year-old college student at NYU, Soren appeared in the 1987 music video for "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)" by the Beastie Boys.[1] )

Yeah, I guess it wasn't long after that Tabitha got ' woke ' and politically active.
