I reckon this is the point where our views diverge.

And this would be where I lose track of you! Nothing makes more sense to me - if you can't see the picture where the media and the government (whoever is in power) are in bed together, I can't... help... I don't know what to say. It's a symbiotic relationship - the media paints whoever is in power as positively as possible in a strength directly corelational to how much slack they get to corner market share. If it all works out, the media throws money the direction of said candidate the next election go-around. It's like that whole lichen thing - one gets water, the other makes food. Since they won't seperate themselves, it needs to be made more difficult for them to be in bed together.
You can't get the truth if the media is committed to spinning. Well, you can... but you have to look all over the gorram web to find it.

I guess what I'm arguing here is that it isn't the regulations that make the media answer to the government - at least not in terms of reporting/endorsement. It's money.

Equal to YOUR left and YOUR right and youve already described yourself as on the right. That aside... and in the spirit of this thread I range from minarchist to anarchosindicalist depending upon mood. Most of the time I work with the libertarians but politics make strange bedfellows so I donate to the Club for Growth, the ACLU, the Institute for Justice, the IHS, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State and since you mentioned it, NPR.
I resent the implication that NPR is radio welfare. Short of XM or other satelite radio NPR is the only directly consumer driven avenue of radio. NPR is sponsored by advertisers, grant makers and listeners. I'll leave it to you to find the percentage of Public radio's budget is sponsored by government funding. But it doesn't compare to the government subsidy corporate radio (corporate anything) receive from their special status (i.e. incorporation.)
I didn't vote for Bush because I am not sure he believes in liberty. I think he is dangerous to a free society. Felt the same way about Al Gore. Both parties in American seem to perfer more government and more restrictions on individuals. Granted they want different restrictions and different governments but both create less freedom for people to live, work and contract in.
There was a republican majority in congress and a republican president and government grew. Government has grown since democrats lost the civil war (think on it.) It will continue to grow until it becomes so suffocating that people throw it off. That's a sad thing, cause folk can breath with just the least bit of air. They may not like to but they'll do it.

My, I've rambled on. I don't really think of myself as a 'Conservative.' I've never been sure what our conservatives today were conserving.

If voting mattered, they'd make it illegal.

In the truest sense of the word I am a conservative.
I want to conserve my personal freedoms, wildlife and wilderness, human lives, my money, and a whole lot more that is liberally being pissed away by the current supposedly conservative administration. But that's okay, the past supposedly liberal administrations have achieved similar levels of nonsense (sense to corperations).
"Government" is not about the individual.
And labels are meaningless.
Except one: Fireflyfan.

Rather see the right thing done for the wrong reason, than the wrong thing done for the right reason, 'cause it seems the right thing ain't never done for the right reason anyhow Chrisisall

I'm a victim of the voracious ad campaign from the last election - I got bruises and everything. As a result, I'm still undecided and still awaiting my campaign apology.

I'm just about a Conservative. But I'm in the UK which means as a Conservative I believe in free health for all at point of use, state pensions, government assistance, gun control (and by gun control, I mean no guns), etc, etc. You know, the sort of policies that only most wacky left wing Democrats would propose in America.

Left and Right are all relative to the country you live in. I think it's just common sense that everyone in this country deserves (to use the NHS as an example) medical treatment if it is needed. On pretty much every level, it is the right thing to do. Of course, I don't agree with everything that the government funds (hence me being a Conservative) but frankly I'm at a loss when I see how little the richest country in the world is willing to give.

This country (USA) has a long history of rugged individualism. Unfortunatly this also engenders a view of things not as they are, but as they should be.
If I can do it, anybody should, or more precisely "Anybody who can't find work ain't lookin' hard enough." Until something happens to them.

Make any sense?

Didn't think so Chrisisall
