Some of us here called it a long time ago. We also pointed out that the price to Russia would eventually outweigh the gains.

Russian Fancy Bear hackers' UK link revealed

Technical and financial records from Crookservers seen by the BBC suggest Fancy Bear had access to significant funds and made use of online financial services, some of which were later closed in anti-money laundering operations.

Fancy Bear - also known as APT28, Sofacy, Iron Twilight and Pawn Storm - has been linked to Russian intelligence.

I'm just going to play the Devil's advocate here and ask you, what exactly do you think the price that "Russia" would pay if it was found that they did in any way influence the elections?

As far as I know, abusing Google's search ad tech isn't illegal and people in the private sector who are smart figure out new ways to do it anytime that Google plugs that hole.

Even if it were illegal, under who's jurisdiction? Just who would be in trouble for this, and how would any punishment possibly be carried out?

OMG ! The Russians may have bought services freely sold on the open market by google. The horror.

Beyond sanctions I'd guess NONE. That's why it's so f*cking brilliant, and that's why for many of us it's not a matter of "gee, did they?" but "they'd be stupid not to." Didn't Trump just say that about China?

==============================

Meh... I'm not all that convinced that Trump is much different than Clinton these days. I still haven't seen anything that makes me believe there was any direct Russian collusion with the Trump administration. But if higher ups in Russia believe that a Trump win would have been better for them, they probably did. I would have, had I been in that position of power. It's probably part of the job description... and if it isn't, it should be. I know we do it all the time, and much more blatant and forcefully (interfering with foreign elections and regimes, I mean).

The only real way to truly stop this from happening in the future, and I mentioned it here before, is if the US starts adopting internet rules that other totalitarian regimes use.

Be careful what you wish for, is all I'm saying.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

UK agencies warned off Russian anti-virus software

Britain's National Cyber Security Center has advised all UK government departments to avoid using Russia-based anti-virus software, warning that it could be exploited by the Russian government.

The guidance was issued in an open letter to all UK permanent secretaries and released to the public on Saturday.

I guess what you're saying is that fb, google, and twitter might have freely sold Russia services that they always freely sell to everyone on the open market. But with this anti-Russian hysteria going on, fb, google, and twitter have to pretend that the fact that they might have freely sold Russia some services look like a secret Russian plot. Instead of their freely chosen business transaction that it was.

I'm of the mind that nothing you do on any computer that has any internet connectivity is safe, ever. It doesn't matter if you use AVG or Kaspersky. Windows or Linux. I'm fairly competent with computers, especially compared to most people, but I couldn't pretend to tell you how to actually code an operating system, or what possible back doors have been made for them, let alone any additional software you add.

I find it pretty crazy that anybody in a governmental institution needs to even be told not to use Russian anti-virus software. Actually, it amazes me that governments don't create their own anti-virus software.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
