CIA's Pompeo says Russia and others trying to undermine U.S. elections

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the Central Intelligence Agency said on Sunday that Russia and others are trying to undermine elections in the United States, the next major one being in November when Republicans will try to keep control of Congress.

U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election to try to help President Donald Trump win, in part by hacking and releasing emails embarrassing to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and spreading social media propaganda.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo told CBS that the Russian interference is longstanding, and continues. Asked on “Face the Nation” if Moscow is currently trying to undermine U.S. elections, Pompeo responded: “Yes sir, have been for decades.”

“Yes, I continue to be concerned, not only about the Russians, but about others’ efforts as well,” Pompeo said, without giving details. “We have many foes who want to undermine Western democracy.”

Moscow denies any meddling in the 2016 elections to help Republican Trump win. U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether any crimes were committed. Two Trump associates, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and campaign aide George Papadopoulos have pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents in the probe. Trump denies any campaign collusion with Russia.

Trump has at times suggested that he accepts the U.S. intelligence agencies’ assessment that Russia sought to interfere in the election but at other times has said he accepts Russian President Vladimir Putin’s denials that Moscow meddled.

Trump has frequently spoken of wanting to improve relations with Putin, even though Russia has frustrated U.S. policy in Syria and Ukraine and done little to help Washington in its standoff with North Korea.

Pompeo told CBS that the CIA had an important function as a part of the national security team to keep U.S. elections secure and democratic. “We are working diligently to do that. So we’re going to work against the Russians or any others who threaten that very outcome,” he said.

Trump said on Saturday that he planned an active year on the campaign trail on behalf of Republican candidates running in the mid-term elections, in which all of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate will be up for election. Republicans hold majorities in both.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The Russian government has launched a sophisticated campaign to influence Mexico's 2018 presidential election and stir up division, a senior White House official said in a video clip published by Mexican newspaper Reforma.

U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said in a speech last month to the Washington-based Jamestown Foundation that there was already evidence of Russian meddling in Mexican elections set for July.

"We've seen that this is really a sophisticated effort to polarize democratic societies and pit communities within those societies against each other," said McMaster in a previously unreported video clip from Dec. 15 that was posted on Twitter by a reporter with Mexican daily newspaper Reforma on Saturday.

"You've seen, actually, initial signs of it in the Mexican presidential campaign already," said McMaster, a former Army general. He did not elaborate in the clip on how Russia was seeking to influence the election.

Reforma published a story on Saturday on the comments, which have since been shared many times on social media.

President Donald Trump's senior national security aide added in the clip that the U.S. government was concerned by Russia's use of advanced cyber tools to push propaganda and disinformation.

A request for comment sent to McMaster's office at the White House and a request for comment from the Russian government in Moscow were not immediately returned on Sunday.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied accusations by U.S. intelligence officials and others of interfering in foreign elections.

In July, Mexico will elect a new president to succeed Enrique Pena Nieto, who is barred by law from seeking a second six-year term. Congressional seats plus some governors' races will also be up for grabs.

According to opinion polls, the frontrunner in the presidential contest is the leftist former mayor of Mexico City, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is running on an anti-corruption platform.

Lopez Obrador, a two-time runner-up for the presidency and a divisive figure in Mexican politics for over a decade, is seen by some analysts as the Kremlin's favorite, given the positive coverage he has received from government-funded media outlets like Sputnik and Russia Today.

Both China and Russia are taking an increasing interest in Latin America as the United States, under Trump, has adopted a more protectionist stance and the future of the North America Free Trade Agreement looks uncertain.

Lopez Obrador has been a fierce critic of Pena Nieto's sweeping energy overhaul, which was favored by U.S. officials and oil companies. He has said he would seek friendly relations with the U.S. government but would demand respect.

In 2016, Russia Today's Spanish-language YouTube channel began running a weekly video blog entitled "The Battle for Mexico," hosted by a prominent supporter of Lopez Obrador, according to David Salvo at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, who has written about Russian attempts to influence politics in Latin America.

Pena Nieto's office and the foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on McMaster's statement.

Some Mexican political commentators said that there was little reason yet to fear Russian involvement in the election.

"The point is that Washington hasn't provided any solid proof for this," said Marco Cancino, head of Mexico City-based consultancy Inteligencia Publica.

"So far, it's just speculation."

The book on Trump has been rated as GOSSIP. Even people who are "quoted" in the book dispute their "quotations".

Much like the "dossier", it seems to be mostly fiction. Until people come forth, OFFICIALLY, with comments, it's a fart in an empty pair of pants.

BTW, I read an interesting comment elsewhere, about the deep state's response to Trump. Considering that I read it six months ago, I think it's prescient.

1) Russia-gate
2) If that fails, "fitness for office"
3) If that fails, assassination.

Meanwhile, "the people" STILL haven't had their concerns addressed. Yes, we have "the vote", but do we have "democracy"? (see below) What I find interesting is how you can claim to support "democracy" and still foment "regime change" of a properly-elected administration in America.

John McCain takes President Trump to task for his attacks on the media

Sen. John McCain has used the press to take aim at President Donald Trump's attacks on the media.

The Republican senator from Arizona penned an op-ed for The Washington Post, condemning what he views as Trump's attempts to discredit the free press.

The piece, which was published Tuesday night, was timed to coincide with the president's previously disclosed plans to hold his "Fake News Awards" on Wednesday, though it is unclear if those alleged awards will take place today or ever.

McCain specifically mentioned Trump's use of the term "fake news" and the mock awards he has touted.

"Whether Trump knows it or not, these efforts are being closely watched by foreign leaders who are already using his words as cover as they silence and shutter one of the key pillars of democracy," McCain wrote.

McCain cited statistics about violence against journalists and the 262 cases of reporters being imprisoned worldwide, as reported by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

I've said it before and I will say it again. The 24 hour news stations should either voluntarily shut themselves down or completely change their format (Including FOX news). As they are right now, they are only out for ratings and are sensational garbage. Very little "reporting" that takes place on any given day can actually be called such. It is 80-90% editorializing and speculation. John Stewart knew this and I considered him a hero many years ago for how he handled it. He did "fake news" for a living and resented the hell out of people who were supposedly doing real news and making a mockery out of it.

The reason why Trump's message of "Fake News" is so resounding obviously isn't because he's a great orator or because the people like or trust him, as is evidenced by the many polls cited here all the time that talk about how low his approval ratings are.

What does that say about the state of the providers of News when overall the belief in them is at an all time low during such a presidency?

New leak reveals that Julian Assange sought Russian visa in 2010

LONDON – A new cache of internal WikiLeaks files shows the radical transparency organization’s staffers discussed having founder Julian Assange skip bail and escape from Britain as authorities closed in on him in 2010.
One of the documents obtained by The Associated Press captures supporters considering a potential Brazilian asylum claim; another has Assange discreetly seeking a Russian visa in London.

The files provide both an intimate look at WikiLeaks and an early hint of Assange’s budding relationship with Moscow.

New details have emerged in the apparent poisoning of Russian activist Pyotr Verzilov, a member of the protest-art group Pussy Riot, and they may shed light on the deaths of three Russian journalists who were shot in the Central African Republic in July. Verzilov had apparently been working with the journalists before they travelled to Africa, and before he fell ill he’d been investigating their deaths, which the Russian government said had occurred as a result of a robbery.

Verzilov, who is thirty, fell ill on September 11th. In the course of several hours, he lost his eyesight and his ability to speak, became delirious, and lost consciousness. He was hospitalized in Moscow in critical condition. Four days later, after he had stabilized, Verzilov was flown to Berlin, where he is now being treated at Charité hospital. On Tuesday, members of his German medical team held a press conference, during which they confirmed that Verzilov had probably been poisoned. He is recovering, but still hallucinating."

Payback for what, is what I'm wondering.

Va-JJ seems to take everything that is happening so personally. I think that's because he's devoted the last 2 years of his life to politics and as long as things aren't going his way then he's a loser because of it. He can't even separate the core of his being from news headlines anymore.

I'm just going to add a point here: Osama bin Laden, the presumed mastermind of 9-11, had a very simple goal.

He knew that he couldn't take down the USA with his band of merrie men. But, what he COULD do is provoke us, and if we reacted stupidly.... AS WE DID ... throwing more and more (borrowed) money at the military and shredding our own Constitution ("Patriot Act") ... we could take down the USA all by ourselves.

This RUSSIA!!RUSSIA!! hysteria is seeming to work out the same way: Getting people so "ideologically possessed" that they can't even listen to each other, and making censorship in the name of "freedom"(!) acceptable. Stampeding cows will run over a cliff, and so will stampeding people.
