Russian fans proudly flying flags, but athletes can't

GANGNEUNG, South Korea
Ilya Kovalchuk has a rule for any fans wanting an Olympic selfie — put the Russian flag away.

The forward for the "Olympic Athletes from Russia" hockey team is worried about breaking International Olympic Committee sanctions imposed on Russia after its Sochi doping scandal. Athletes compete in neutral uniforms and have to sign a document saying they won't protest the ruling that turned Team Russia into OAR.
"We won't chase (fans) away" if they're carrying Russian flags, Kovalchuk said Tuesday. "If there's an IOC rule then we'll talk to them, explain it and take a photograph without the flag."

At the same time the World Anti-Doping Agency announced changes to its governance structure, the agency's former lead investigator wrote an op-ed piece arguing its leaders should be replaced, and said the decision to reinstate Russia's suspended anti-doping agency came via a "cowardly" process that betrayed clean athletes.

Show me a professional athlete in America that makes millions of dollars and I'll show you somebody using outright illegal substances or at the very least "experimental" substances that haven't yet been deemed illegal. Period.

I'm not defending Russia. I'm just saying you can't put that shit back in the horse is all.

Oh... and the simple solution is this.

Tune out.

They'll stop doing it when they realize nobody watches or gives a shit anymore.

I realize you're talking Olympics and I'm talking professional sports in America which is essentially an apples to oranges comparison for most things, but Money is the universal language.

If everybody keeps tuning in, the message we're sending is that we're perfectly okay with it.

Everybody should have stopped watching sports when they started making multi-million dollar salaries for playing games back in the 90's.

Oh...

And when it comes to the non-professional Olympics, it's hardly Russia that's the only one doing it. They need to crack down hard and treat everyone fairly when testing. It needs to be an open and public process that is free from any bias and hypocrisy whatsoever.

USA ain't innocent.

Not drug related, but a prime example of this was absolutely ridiculous when the rules were changed for RATINGS and MONEY to allow professional US basketball players form the Dream Team in Olympic basketball.

I found it quite poetic when 8 years later the 2004 not-so-Dream-Team full of narcissistic idiots got their asses handed to them by almost 20 points by Puerto Rico, and even funnier when they went on to lose two more games to Lithuania and Argentina and finish with the bronze medal.

Whenever one of the little know-it-all kiddies want to go on about how LeBron was the best basketball player that ever was, I just tell them that Michael Jordan never lost a game 90-94 against a bunch of Lithuanian amateurs.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

It looks like the 'Russia doping scandal' was fake news all along.

In 2018
Quote:

Two separate panels of the Court of Arbitration for Sport have fully or partially struck down International Olympic Committee sanctions for 39 (of 43) Russian athletes in the Sochi Olympics.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/winter-olympics-2018/2018/02/01/
cas-decision-lifts-doping-bans-28-russian-athletes-reinstates-sochi-results/1085716001
/

Of the remaining, 3 had their appeals scheduled at a different time, as per the article. The bans were lifted due to 'insufficient evidence'. In addition, the Russian Olympic Committee was reinstated.
Quote:

Russian Olympic Committee reinstated by IOC https://www.reuters.com/article/us-olympics-2018-russia-ioc-reinstatem
en/russian-olympic-committee-reinstated-by-ioc-idUSKCN1GC1Z5

But the IOC was unhappy that it's aggressive campaign against all things RUSSIA!!!RUSSIA!!!RUSSIA!!! didn't go its way. In 2018 it appealed the CAS decisions to the Swiss Supreme Court.
Quote:

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Olympic Committee will appeal to Switzerland's supreme court against rulings which cleared some Russian athletes of doping sanctions from the Sochi Games.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2018/05/03/ioc-to-chall
enge-russian-doping-cases-at-swiss-supreme-court/34509989
/

Sadly for the IOC, in its first decision, the Swiss Supreme Court upheld the CAS ruling which overturned the IOC's actions.
Quote:

No “Surprise”: The first IOC Appeal against a CAS Award is dismissed by the Swiss Federal Tribunal http://www.swissarbitrationdecisions.com/atf-4a-382-2018
In addition (ibid)
Quote:

The judgement is far more interesting for its factual background than for its legal findings; it puts an end to highly publicized legal battle between Alexander Legkov (and several other Russian athletes) and the IOC, which lies at the heart of the so-called “Russian doping scandal”.

And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?

The last time WADDLE tried this, the Russians took it to the specified arbitrations court in Switzerland - and won.

That's why WADDLE has to do this all over again.

And they'll lose in court all over again.

But you won't see THAT bannered all over the headlines - just like you didn't see it bannered all over the headlines the last time.

Swiss Court of Appeals overturns ban on 28 of 39 Russians. '28 cleared Russians'
The IOC challenges all the cases and appeals the decision on the basis of jurisdiction.
And LOSES the first appeal. I guess that means the Swiss Courts have essentially upheld all the other reinstatements, because the Swiss courts did have the jurisdiction to reinstate the athletes.

The 15 year-old figure skating phenom, Valieva, got the green light yesterday to compete for the Gold, even though she tested positive for a banned substance in December. Apparently, being a minor absolves her of any wrongdoing. They say that if she wins as expected there won't be a medal ceremony. Very bizarre situation indeed, but not even registering on the bizarre meter compared to NBC's coverage with Johnny Weir doing the color oh so colorfully.

Sounds like I need to follow it better in order to understand that.

Once upon a time I thought The Olympics was where the best human athletes competed at the highest levels. Maybe that was always just an illusion.

Well, despite every skater in history saying she shouldn't be allowed to skate, she skated. I cannot believe that not ONE single Russian ADULT in her camp didn't tell her not to skate. Withdrawing would have salvaged some honor and dignity to a situation that the girl, a 15 year old, may or may not have had anything to do with.

She took the ice last to skate as the leader going into the long program and you could see right away she was a total emotional wreck. Then she skated .. and fell down more in a couple of minutes than her entire career. She finished in tears and was quite inconsolable afterwards. Do these Russian coaches want to win SO badly that they'll destroy a child's life to do it? She left the arena never speaking to anyone. Jeesh, I hope she doesn't end up in a gulag somewhere.

The other two Russians won Gold and Silver. They were crying too, with the Silver medalist repeatedly saying she didn't want to go to the medal ceremony. The only HAPPY person there was the Japanese gal who won the Bronze. All in all, an Olympic horror show.

NBC's hosts Tara & Johnny really did an excellent job voicing and explaining their views as all this mayhem was going on. It was quite gut-wrenching to experience.

I'm all for performance enhancing drugs when it comes to pro sports.

With the amount of money they make and the fact that the majority of us have been priced out of ever seeing any games live again over the last few decades, I want to see mutants out on that field. I want to see 500+ Home Run races. I want to see at least one backboard shattered every basketball game.

But I don't want to see any of that in the Olympics.

Shame.

The Russian hierarchy’s fondness for cheating ruined this young girls’ life. She is just a child. You can bet she didn’t decide to cheat but was led down that path by her handlers. What has happened to her is a tragedy that will haunt her. It’s not her fault and is nothing but sad.

Norway is dominating the Olympics and it is a country with only five million people. It’s due to their holistic approach to developing their athletes. They protect them and let them develop over time supporting them as they do.

This young lady should leave Russia, train cleanly with a new trainer, and then represent Russia again when she is ready. She needs to heal.

To be fair on Russia yes they were probably doping they certainly did it during Soviet times, I think almost every nation on Earth has a steroid mucher doper somewhere to some degree... but there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY these cute little blonde models Anna Kournikova, Maria Sharapova people who won almost Nothing in Tennis can be convicted of doping along with every other Russian athlete, and people like Nadal, Roger Federer, Sir-HE-na Roid Rage Williams not doping...as they pick up these life changing injuries where their tennis careers are over, ripped apart by sport ending injury, they get a 'head cold' the Doctor gives them 'magic' juice and they are back playing, winning after their careers ended and better than they ever were and running to 'panic rooms' when they are supposed to be tested.
