I think all those Republican proposals for reducing gun massacres are excellent, if the GOP were willing to pay the price. But every one of the proposals are state and local initiatives, with all costs paid locally. It is a smokescreen for GOP inaction on the national level. Delay long enough and the problem will go away. Soon enough, the Massacre will be forgotten. What was the name of that school? Marjory Stoneman Douglas or Mary Stone Davis or was it . . . ? When did this happen? What state . . . ?

Central Florida students face school-threat charges after Parkland tragedy

"In the week since a massacre at a South Florida high school claimed the lives of 17 people, more than a dozen children and teenagers have been arrested in Central Florida, accused of threatening local schools.

Authorities say they are taking a strict stance against such incidents, vowing to investigate and prosecute all threats — even when students later claim they were only joking. Several of the students arrested in the past week are facing felony charges.

“Let’s be clear: Their actions have serious consequences and will result in their arrest,” Casselberry Police Chief Larry Krantz said in a statement Thursday, after a 12-year-old girl was arrested as a suspect in threats against three Seminole County schools.

Authorities were made aware of threats the student posted online targeting Casselberry Elementary School, South Seminole Middle School and Sterling Park Elementary School, a police spokesperson said."

So, I guess the NRA isn't the ginormous, megalithic, all encompassing power that it's made out to be, right ? Because, like...omg ! Twitter !!

What's my ' source ' have to do w/ anything ? You can't deflect from the actual fact of what happened, can you ? Here in GA, because Delta decided to take action against completely innocent NRA, the GA legislature took a slap at crony capitalism, and chose NOT to renew its tax free status.

Actions have consequences, and Delta chose poorly.

Those suggestions can't be lunacy because all of them came from wise old men of the GOP. Today Trump had another suggestion, which would require a time machine for him: Trump says he would run into Parkland high school “even if I didn’t have a weapon”. This isn’t the first time Trump has alluded to his own heroics.

In 2015, then-candidate Trump rallied a crowd at a campaign stop in Tennessee in the aftermath of a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon.

Trump told the crowd that, as holder of a permit to carry a handgun in New York, an attacker would be “shocked” if he encountered him, and that he would act like Charles Bronson in the 1970s action film Death Wish. He egged the crowd to chant “Death Wish.” He also said that “today you can’t make that movie because it’s not politically correct.” (There’s actually a reboot set to premiere this week with Bruce Willis. www.imdb.com/title/tt1137450/ )

Trump also boasted about his permit to carry in New York at an early GOP debate, when responding to a question about that Oregon shooting. “I have a permit, which his very unusual in New York — a permit to carry,” he said during a CNBC debate in October 2015. “And I do carry on occasion. Sometimes, a lot. But I like to be unpredictable.”

Trump got his wish. Death Wish, the movie, this Friday at a theater near you. Bring your AR-15 to get free popcorn and a large drink!

I own guns and rifles. Is it hypocritical for me to think other people should have less than me? Yes, it is. How much less? Copy the laws from some other nation, maybe Canada. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_Canada

One gun law I would pass is that anyone, including Trump and Florida politicians, who says they would rush into a building where there was gunfire even if they were not armed is that they have to do just that. It is ridiculous to expect Paul Blart: Mal Cop to save students from assassination. It is very heroic if Blart does, but Trump and the Florida GOP politicians are evil to demand that from anyone but a SWAT team.

I agree with that. You'll never hear me saying that the cops should have rushed in. In fact, I said the exact opposite and that anybody who blames the cops at the school for not going in guns blazing has watched one too many movies.

I don't know about evil. It's stupid, for sure. Even if they were demanded by law to do so, most of them wouldn't do it.

I did not think of that, but now that you mention it, maybe I’ve got too many hunting rifles and shotguns. I prefer beef to venison, and never liked duck, and hate trophy heads of antelope, so hunting for food or show has lost its appeal. And my old hunting buddies are getting older, so hunting for socializing is slowly losing its appeal, one death at a time. And I’ve got stories about Obama-and-Hillary-haters killing themselves with their own guns in “hunting accidents”, maybe because of business and tax evasions, which has soured me on the notion that Republicans are generous and stable members of society, not greedy cheaters, liars, and crooks underneath their outward appearance of rectitude.

Good morning, you braying 6ixJackass. Trump signed a bill making it easier for people with mental illness to buy guns.

On February 28, 2017, Trump signed a law revoking an Obama-era regulatory initiative that made it harder for people with mental illness to buy a gun.

Yet despite this effort to roll back even a very modest effort to restrain the ability of seriously incapacitated people from obtaining deadly weapons, this morning Trump tweeted that there were “so many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed,” implying that someone should have done something to report him.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!

For the record: Flat Out Lunacy the proposals be!

Here's a thought: why not gather all the nutjobs and scatter them throughout the country and start a manhunt. Put targets on the backs of the students, distribute AR-15s to all who want to be a shooter, and hand guns with 9 rounds to the "hunters" and see who wins.

Whoever wins, gets to move on to the next round of games, and so on. Of course, it will be televised and the audience can vote for:

Best Dressed (both targets and shooters)
Best Equipped (both shooters and hunters)
Best FBI Code Name
Best Politico Excuse

We could even have a NRA official unicycle shoot-out. We put an NRA Official (I vote for LapIere) running about on a unicycle, complete with target on his back and he has to run a course 1/4-mile long (with obstacles, including masacred bodies of students. Sort of like a gauntlet. Headshots are worth 100 points, Torso 50 points, a leg 25 points, a toe 5 points. Kill shot 1000 points.

Students, parents and guest stars with guns line up about 25 yards away along a line and shoot at the target on the unicycle. If the NRA official makes it across the 1/4-mile run, he gets to go to another high school at random and do it all over again. We keep doing that until we run out of NRA officials. (It seems only fair).

Let's see how long it takes for them to want to ban war-grade weapons of mass destruction then. Fucking douchebags.

Fun game, right!?

Except at Parkland... or Newtown... or Las Vegas... or Orlando... or Blacksburg... or Sutherland, TX... or Killeen... or Austin... or... see a pattern? The deadliest mass shootings in US History and where were the good guys? Shooters don't wait or they aren't that stupid. We are the most well armed society on the planet but the only guns that matter are the ones the shooters have.

I've heard there's been exactly one instance where a marine actually shot a shooter. Not sure where, but I heard tell. (I'll check into it).

" Trump signed a bill making it easier for people with mental illness to buy guns."

Lie

* Quick answer, it is a known distortion of the fact. Don't have the time now, but this false story is a favorite of the left. Further, this is a common practice of the left. Put out half truths or out right lies and claim somebody on the right did something. Idiotic distortions like this waste time and do nothing to advance the real issue. It just infuriates people and makes it impossible to have a reasonable discussion's.

Guns, immigration show cultural chasm
www.nationalreview.com/2018/02/changing-stances-guns-immigration-refle
ct-cultural-political-shift
/

Bernie Sanders is an intriguing example of how political and cultural currents swirl around us. He won his first bid for Congress in 1990 in part because he received the full-throated endorsement of the National Rifle Association. Sanders, the former mayor of Burlington, Vermont, was noncommittal on an assault-weapons ban while his GOP opponent, Peter Smith, flip-flopped and came out in favor of a ban.

“It is not about Peter Smith vs. Bernie Sanders,” the NRA's Wayne LaPierre explained. “It is about integrity in politics.”

This history was just one reason why it was amusing to listen to LaPierre at the Conservative Political Action Conference last week railing against the “socialists” determined to grab everyone's guns. The man who helped launch Bernie Sanders, the most prominent American socialist, suddenly thinks socialism is an existential threat to liberty.

What's going on?

On the immigration front: Democrats are increasingly invested in permissive policies in large part because they've bought into the theory that diverse populations are their key to electoral victories going forward. In dialectic fashion, Republicans are increasingly invested in restrictive policies in large part because they're chasing after ever-larger segments of the white vote.

As for firearms: Democrats passed an assault-weapons ban in September 1994. Even Bill Clinton credited that decision as one of the chief reasons the GOP took back the House two months later.

True or not, the more important consequence was that gun rights increasingly became a partisan issue, and the NRA had little choice but to become an adjunct of the GOP. The dynamic became centrifugal, with Democrats and Republicans becoming ever more defined by the issue.

All of these changes were driven by facts on the ground. To listen to Democrats, Republicans support gun rights because the NRA tells them to. In reality, Republicans support gun rights because their voters tell them to, just as Democratic voters tell their representatives the opposite.

But guns and immigration are not simply drivers of polarization, they are examples of its power. Politics has become a lifestyle, part of the “Big Sort” driving so much in our culture. That's why the NRA's marketing these days has so little to do with gun policy and so much to do with cultural resentments.

These days, if you're a Democrat, you're likely to be a down-the-line Democrat on a host of unrelated issues. Same if you're a Republican. Like our representatives, many of us won't buck party orthodoxy on any matter of importance.

Liberals such as Sanders have talked about “two Americas” for generations, but they worked on the assumption that this divide was class-based. It's not. It's cultural, and the divide is becoming a chasm.

When you own a gun, you have not purchased "freedom" and "protection". You only purchased "killing".

Obviously, if you are an incompetent shooter when under pressure, all you purchased is "wounding" or "missing" your targeted kill, human or deer. You only bought yourself a noise machine, a boom stick. That is why the AR-15 was invented: it makes incompetent shooters into killers by the mathematical probability of killing when many, many rounds are fired randomly. The AR-15 was never engineered to bring "freedom" and "protection". It is plainly only about "killing".

Read a history book. The "freedom" that you and I enjoy at one time required a lot of killing. Call me a pessimist, but I don't believe that is set in stone forever. Neither did the people who wrote what GWB called "That Goddamned Piece of Paper".

I have a handgun that I've owned for over 7-8 years and never fired. I could walk into an office and get my conceal and carry today and walked strapped almost wherever I go in the state. I chose not to because I'm not an idiot.

It's sad that idiots have to ruin it for the rest of us.

It is in my home, for protection. I might not be a sharpshooter, but if I was being robbed I could just point the damn thing at a low trajectory and fire it without even seeing who was in my house and whoever it was would scatter quick. .45's aren't a joke.

I'm the only person with a key to my house, and the deadbolts lock with a key from both sides. If somebody is inside of it after I've locked it and I didn't open the door for them, they don't belong here.

Trump had Democrats cheering in his bipartisan gun control meeting.
www.vox.com/2018/2/28/17064120/trump-gun-control-meeting-congress-expl
ained

“You’re scared of the NRA,” President Donald Trump declared in a room of lawmakers Wednesday during a meeting on guns that pushed Republican priorities to the sidelines and had Democrats in the room cheering.

A bipartisan group of legislators met in the White House to try to make headway on gun law reforms in the wake of the deadly shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school that left 17 dead and injured more than a dozen others.

Throughout the hour, Trump often veered into uncomfortable territory for Republicans and at times broke with his party altogether, reiterating support for policies many in his conservative base have taken issue with.

At one point, he said some in the group were “petrified” of the national gun lobby and sided with Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein (CA) and Amy Klobuchar’s (MN) proposals over those of Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL).

In the televised meeting, which felt a lot like the freewheeling discussion Trump held on immigration last month, the president called for a bill that was “powerful” on background checks and that would address mental illness and possibly raise the age limit for buying assault rifles from 18 years old to 21. He also repeatedly stated support for beefing up armed security at schools and getting rid of “gun-free zones.”

In all, it was an undeniable call for comprehensive gun control — something Republicans have been wary of touching.

“I like that word, comprehensive,” Trump said. “They say it is a bad word. I like the word. I would rather have a comprehensive bill. ... It would be really nice to create something that’s beautiful.”

Whether this discussion will actually yield legislation — and whether Trump sticks to the positions he supported in the meeting — remains to be seen.

Only last month, many of these same lawmakers listened to Trump publicly support compromise immigration legislation, only to have his administration derail every bipartisan proposal put forward. Trump said he wants to be the president that gets gun reform passed through Congress. It’s not yet clear if that will translate into helping Congress pass a bill.

Is it a fairy tale that the American Civil War was fought with guns and the death toll was a million? The amount of money to be spent on the compensation claims was set at "the Sum of Twenty Million Pounds Sterling". In 1833, £20 million amounted to approximately 5% of the British GDP.

I think the Civil War was fought over money.
Quote:

By 1860, there were more millionaires (slaveholders all) living in the lower Mississippi Valley than anywhere else in the United States. In the same year, the nearly 4 million American slaves were worth some $3.5 billion, making them the largest single financial asset in the entire U.S. economy, worth more than all manufacturing and railroads combined.
Unlike the British Parliament, the American Congress was too cheap and stingy to buy the slaves. And then who would do the work if there were no slaves? The Cotton Planters sure didn't want to pay their field hands a living wage. The century after the Civil War proved they didn't want to pay blacks more than the very minimum to keep them alive. Antebellum Southerners much rather preferred shooting a Yankee in glorious war than working in their own dusty fields picking cotton that made the South wealthy.

The NRA was right: the president really does want to take away your guns. But it’s President Trump, not President Obama, who wants to do it.

And he wants to do it without bothering about due process. In a single sentence, he’s managed to alienate both conservatives and liberals. There’s literally no one who supports this idea. This is the craziest shit we’ve seen from Trump since—oh, a few days ago, I suppose. The problem—aside from Trump being Trump—is that he has no one to consult about what kind of proposal might have a chance to gain Republican support if he pushes hard enough. That’s because there’s probably no one in the White House who supports even the tiniest shred of gun safety legislation. So Trump is on his own, causing chaos for his own party and guaranteeing that nothing will get done.

"Tony Garces was still reeling from his injuries on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after he disarmed a possible church shooter in Amarillo, Texas — and was then shot by police.

Speaking to NBC News by phone from his hospital room at Heart Hospital of Northwest Texas, Garces, 54, said that he was admitted to the emergency room on Monday with a blood clot in his lung.

On the morning of Feb. 14 — the same day as the Florida school shooting that killed 17 kids and teachers — Garces wrestled a handgun away from a man who had entered the chapel at Faith City Mission and threatened to hold church attendees hostage."

Russian banker said he met Trump through NRA

The Russian banker under scrutiny for money transfers to the National Rifle Association said the organization helped him meet President Trump.

Alexander Torshin, a deputy head of Russia’s central bank, is one of his country's strongest supporters of the NRA, even hosting dinners for an American delegation that came to Moscow in 2015.

A report earlier this year said federal investigators were looking into whether his payments to the group were funneled towards Trump’s election as part of what Fusion GPS investigator Glenn Simpson said was a “very concerted effort” by Russian officials to get in with the gun lobby

The RAND Corp has credibility. A new, huge review of gun research has bad news for the NRA.

On the gun control front, there’s moderate evidence that background checks reduce suicide and violent crime, limited evidence that prohibitions associated with mental illness reduce suicide, moderate evidence that those prohibitions reduce violent crime, and supportive evidence that child-access prevention laws reduce suicides and unintentional injuries and deaths.

Meanwhile, there’s limited evidence that concealed carry laws increase violent crime and unintentional injuries and deaths. And there’s moderate evidence that “stand your ground” laws — NRA-backed measures that expand when someone can use a gun or other weapons to defend himself — increase violent crime.

If you put this all together, it suggests that restrictive laws seem to lead to fewer gun deaths, while the permissive laws seem to lead to more gun deaths.

That’s not enough for nonpartisan researchers at RAND to make sweeping conclusions, but it’s certainly suggestive — particularly for policymakers interested in finding solutions to America’s gun violence problem.

AURaptor, there have been 850,000 gun deaths, but it would take only about 850 more deaths to prove you wrong. If 50 gunmen killed 17 students in each of the 50 states over the next 12 months for a total of 850 dead, I think Trump and the Republicans in Congress could be motivated to change their minds about guns. The massacres would have to be no fewer nor more than one per week or else those Republicans, with their very weak memories, would forget it was happening. Since 700 are dead per week, 17 more is not that big of an increase, but it sure would make a difference if it was happening in a weekly school massacre. But what happens for Christmas and New Years when the schools are closed? The massacre moves to the multi-cinema and continues motivating our elected representatives in government to solve this problem.

It Took the NRA One Day to Crush President Trump’s Gun Reforms

At a televised meeting on Wednesday with lawmakers, Mr. Trump had endorsed a Senate proposal to significantly expand background checks on gun sales and said he wanted to see sales of some firearms restricted to people who were 21 or older. He also suggested some guns be taken away from people without due process. All of these stances run counter to the positions of the NRA, the nation’s largest gun-rights organization.

On Thursday night Trump met with the NRA. So what was announced Friday?

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Friday morning Mr. Trump now considers a federal increase in the minimum age as likely unrealistic….On background checks, Ms. Sanders dialed back the president’s stance. He is seeking “not necessarily universal background checks, but certainly improving the background-check system. He wants to see what that legislation, the final piece of it looks like,” she said.

That didn’t take long for Trump to flipflop.

U.S. media outlets ran more than 7,900 stories online about the Parkland shooting, 17 dead, in the two weeks after the shooting.

That compares with nearly 2,600 stories about the Sutherland Springs shooting, 26 dead, about 4,200 stories on the Las Vegas shooting, 58 dead, and nearly 4,500 stories about the San Bernardino shooting, 14 dead, all in a period of two weeks.

The only shooting that showed more online stories in the subsequent two weeks was Orlando at 8,097 and 49 dead.

In the wake of the Parkland shooting, there has been more coverage focusing on policy discussions compared with the shooting in Las Vegas, in which 58 people were killed. While there was some discussion over outlawing “bump stock” devices after Las Vegas, there was much less talk of an assault-weapons ban or other solutions-oriented discussions.
