Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

today's CNN headline:

In a torrid week, Trump ripped US allies, challenged American values, and heaped praise on autocrats

In other words - BE AFRAID OF TRUMP!!! BE VERY AFRAID!!!

In its next most prominent typeface was this -

11 ads that captured the '90s

It makes me wonder what's going on that we're not supposed to notice. Because I guarantee, this is not the second-most important information for today.

BRENDA

I think the citizens of the United States of America should be. He's trashed your allies and is now trying to be friends with a dictator that first started in war of insults.

Policies that rip children away from their families at the border between Mexico and the US. Detaining then somehow not knowing where I think over 1,000 of these children went and doesn't seem to care.

Blames that particular policy on the Democrats.

Came back from Singapore saying Kim is a smart, tough guy, who has his people listening to every word he says. Then follows that statement up with saying that he would like his own people to do that.

Not long ago I wandered by a TV that had CNN on. They had BREAKING NEWS: something happened 50 years before, it was an Anniversary.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"I think the citizens of the United States of America should be. He's trashed your allies"
I don't think well of these allegiances. I'm not sure what they're trying to accomplish besides benefiting transnational corporations and ganging up on smaller, poorer nations, like Libya and Syria. In addition, I don't think it's in the US's interest to be a global 'policeman' and carry the bulk of military spending.
Perhaps you can tell me what's good about these allegiances.

"and is now trying to be friends with a dictator that first started in war of insults."
To tell the truth, the last few weeks I've been putting a ton of hours into work. And I haven't kept track of which person we're supposed to be hating now, who's on our constantly spinning roulette wheel of hate. Who are you referring to? Assad? Putin? Kim? The Ayatollah? Someone else?

"Policies that rip children away from their families at the border between Mexico and the US. Detaining then somehow not knowing where I think over 1,000 of these children went and doesn't seem to care."
Let's examine Canadian law and policy.
"(The) 2018 budget includes $173-million for greater security along the Canada-U.S. border and for the quicker processing of asylum claimants so that they can be deported in a timely fashion if need be. The money is badly needed: According to Reuters, nearly nine in 10 refugee hearings were not held within the required 60-day time frame last December, because of a backlog."
And Canada does have laws to prosecute and punish illegal border crossing. https://www.loc.gov/law/help/citizenship-pathways/canada.php "The maximum penalty for a person who commits such a general offense as entering the country unlawfully or unlawfully overstaying a visa is a fine of Can$50,000 and imprisonment for two years ..."
Canadians aren't the warm, welcoming type when it comes to illegal immigrants into their own country. "March 20, 2017, 3:18 PM Nearly half of Canadians support “increasing the deportation of people living in Canada illegally,” according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Monday. The same share said they supported sending migrants that crossed from the United States right back over the border, while just 36 percent said Canada should accept them and let them apply for refugee status."
Just as the flood of immigrants into Europe sparked a nationalistic, anti-immigrant reaction in the EU, Trudeau announced his own crackdown policy in Canada. "After reminding the world that Canada is “a country of laws,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the nation will no longer be ignoring refugees who enter the country illegally. Faced with a rash of border crossings from the U.S. and growing criticism of his quixotic approach to border control, Trudeau’s decision marks a major turning-point from his campaign. Evidently, Trudeau is recognizing what any head of state who campaigns for radically loose immigration policies must at some point: Opening borders poses serious problems, both practical and political."
Canada has been well-protected from large-scale illegal immigration, and from its comfy situation has been able to afford a passive benevolence. But with just the minuscule (by comparison to the US) up-tick, Canada has turned into a scrooge.

"Came back from Singapore saying Kim is a smart, tough guy, who has his people listening to every word he says. Then follows that statement up with saying that he would like his own people to do that."
So? Why do you care what Trump says? I know I don't. His words are meaningless.

If the news media would stop reporting on that exclusively, maybe we'd learn something meaningful. B/c no matter what Trump SAYS, what counts is what he DOES. And he does plenty. Which is going uncovered.

As for Trump, either what he 'says' is a negotiation tactic to keep the other side guessing; or it's a ruse to bamboozle the media - and like a really dumb but energetic dog, the media is only too happy to run after everything Trump throws.

Some of the media, yes. Definitely Fox & Co. Sorry, he's thought of as "the most powerful man in the world" so what he says does matter. Maybe not to you, but to much of the world it does so it is important. I agree that some of the stuff reported about Trump is as stupid as he is - zero sum. Lesson learned: MSM is only useful for what "What happened today" a fire, a shooting, stocks up/down... stuff like that. The why of things and the shady crooked crap Trump has been up to? You generally have to look elsewhere for that. There's a lot of cross pollination going on. Some small news sites re-report what the better ones report, on and on. The information is out there, just depends on whether people give a sh*t to look for it. I guarantee Trump supporters just don't care - that's their default setting.

You'd be right except that you're completely wrong. The "Fucking dem bots" (people I assume you mistakenly call that) have been right about everything around here. Try paying attention. If you were so interested in, "It makes me wonder what's going on that we're not supposed to notice" you'd be cheering Mueller on, because that's exactly what he's doing - finding out what went on. And not, "Oh, boo hop, Hillary lost, how'd that happen?" I bet no one here cares about her that much. More wanting to know how deep Russian influences went in the election and just how big a pile Trump is (our president).

I'm glad investigations are happening. Great. As I said, lock them all up on both sides.

I'm not talking about Hillary. What I mean about what's going on under the radar is things that are completely and totally unrelated to Trump or Russia.

The media has been so obsessed with Trump that I think everyone is looking at things that don't really matter and nobody is watching stuff that is going to matter much more down the road.

1kiki's hypocracy runs very deep and complete G. Remember all her concerns about global warming, climate change. Then Trump chooses a climate denier who’s suing the EPA to run it. His choice couldn’t be worse for the global environment. Whats 1kiki do? She spends all her time defending him.

It's the same thing with the consumer protection agency. What happened to 1kiki and sig's concerns about the little guy? We both know they really don't give a shit. With those two it's about trolling America. Only about putting forth Putin's agenda. Trumps good for them because he is bad for America.

Yep G, comrades 1kiki and sig's hypocracy runs deep and is complete.

It makes me wonder what's going on that we're not supposed to notice. Because I guarantee, this is not the second-most important information for today.

Maybe you didn't notice this because the media didn't rub your nose in it a thousand times?

President Donald Trump on Saturday repeated his false assertion that Democrats were responsible for his administration’s policy of separating migrant families apprehended at the border, sticking to a weeks long refusal to publicly accept responsibility for a widely condemned practice that has become a symbol of his crackdown on illegal immigration.

“Democrats can fix their forced family breakup at the Border by working with Republicans on new legislation, for a change!” Trump said in a morning post on Twitter.

In fact, there is no law that requires families to be separated at the border. It is the Trump administration’s decision this year to prosecute all unlawful immigrants as criminals that has forced the breakup of families.

/

Or maybe this never sunk into 1kiki's thick skull because it wasn't repeated a million times in the last two years? Donald Trump’s tax plan could land America $10 trillion deeper in debt.

www.brookings.edu/opinions/donald-trumps-tax-plan-could-land-america-1

/

As soon as a number is mentioned in a news story, whether million/billion/trillion, brains shutdown. But that's not really news, is it? And that is why the rich can slowly steal trillions over ten years from the US Treasury: rich brains can handle the numbers, while most people can't or won't think about it.

I've got a novel idea: Why won't Trump admit that he is separating families? Why does he have to deny his accomplishment? But far more interesting than families being arrested at the border, that thing about Trump and other wealthy Americans (I include myself) stealing $10 trillion from the US Treasury over the next decade ought to be Trump's proudest accomplishment. He ought to be loudly taking personal credit for that. I wonder why he does not?

Does it really need to be mentioned that if Democrats take control of Congress and the White House in the next ten years they will NOT be able to stop the theft of money from the US Treasury unless the Democrats have 67 Senators? Any less than 67 and the Republicans in Congress will block a change in the tax code stopping the theft by Trump. In ten years, Trump will still be very happy with his low taxes. But Trump's children will be happier if Trump dies sooner because he is worth more to them dead than alive.

Maybe Trump should read this article?
www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-09/u-s-budget-deficit-to-ballo
on-to-1-trillion-by-2020-cbo-says

The yearly deficit under Trump grows larger and larger. Spending will exceed revenue by $804 billion in 2018. In fiscal 2019, the deficit will reach $981 billion. In 2020, $1,008 billion. And it keeps increasing, with every year larger than the last. And this is assuming the best possible case, where the economy is growing by 3.3% per year, every year, for ten years. If there was a recession, the deficit would be many times more than a $trillion per year. For some reason, Trump is not bragging about his personal contributions to the deficit. And since Trump is not talking, the news media has no news on the deficit.

As always, I forgot to immediately mention that some of those billions in federal deficits will mean I end up richer than ever before. And if Trump crashes the economy and the stock market, I will buy land and stocks at a huge discount. If the trend continues, someday, me and the other top 1% will own 99% of America while the lower 99% of Americans own only 1% of America. For now the top 1% controls 38.6% of America's wealth. Give me enough time and that 38.6% can become 99%. I'd only have to triple my wealth while everyone in the lower 99% stays the same. I am confident that it can be done because I already tripled my wealth . . . several times in row.

It is unfortunate you didn't do this when Rupert was still owner of FNC, before the 2 Libtwits took over. I don't know, but I fear today it might not fare much better than the other Entertainment Shows that have "News" in the title.

It was exciting in the early days after algore invented the Internet and Google, with a free exchange and exposure of ideas and information, without filtering of news. But now to think certain websites are the only actual source of real News, it is a bit disheartening.

I wasnt sure whether to post this in this thread, or one of those about GMOs or Big Pharma.

Was just watching Full Measure. They just wrapped up season 3 with a recap show of their favorite stories from the season.
They mentioned that they did many more stories about medical, Pharma, health, because they are not as heavily funded by Big Medicine as the other shows which do not do the stories.
I didn't get a clear vibe whether this was because they decline funding if editorial influence is attached, or if the funders just don't think many people watch the show.
I always enjoy the show, it has a refreshing perspective.

This is one area where we AGREE, well almost. Allow me to explain:
The media have lost their minds when it comes to Trump's twisted/evil
words, which I dare say are purposeful, and rarely report on his actions.
While he goes about rambling and speechafying, his cronies are going
around destroying the institutions that made this country function as a
world power. It's obvious to me that everything he says is the exact
opposite of what he really means.
His lies flow from his mouth like water, so much so, that the uninformed
couldn't care less. As long as they feel he "understands" their fears.
He's convinced them that only he can deliver them from the hordes of immigrants coming to replace them. Only he can make them relevant and hold
power. But it's not even about that so much, but he has them eating out of his hands. The media makes little to no effort in covering the most important aspects of his administration - it is to disrupt and destroy the remnants of our democracy.

Yes, I said the remnants...There is something for more sinister afoot, and they've done a piss-poor job in covering the dismantling of this country. Case in point, the federal judges being chosen (who are placed for life) and who may use their decision-making to further the ultra-right wing agenda. I don't think I need to spell it out, now do I. Then we have the immigration policy change that has the rabid dogs foaming at the mouth. Namely the cruel and inhuman treatment of the immigrant children. Pure fucking evil, and Gestapo-like. All that is left is the "gas chambers."
Where I dis-agree with you is in the matter of his words, what he says.
Both his words and his deeds matter a great deal. Decent people must RESIST.
His lies affect the whisper-thin and fragile fibers that hold our little
world from coming apart. They become the norm instead of what they are,
a sick and twisted reality from a sick and twisted evil sack of shit that
Trump is. He is like the bully who tries to intimidate, but its all fake
bravado. Deep down he's an insecure little shit. His words and deeds need
to be refuted and rejected at all costs. In this, this is where the media
has miserably failed, that and covering his cronies behind the scenes
goings on.

So yeah, the media has failed, BIG TIME, in covering what truly matters.
But I think his words/lies are geared towards normalizing abhorent
behavior and must be exposed. Some have briefly, very briefly, covered
that aspect of his attack, but so much more needs to be done.

As for Trump, either what he 'says' is a negotiation tactic to keep the other side guessing; or it's a ruse to bamboozle the media - and like a really dumb but energetic dog, the media is only too happy to run after everything Trump throws.

There is another aspect to this, and that is people claiming POLITICAL ASYLUM because of poverty and gang violence in their city, or domestic violence in their home. What is "political" about any of that? "Political" asylum is meant for categories of people who are discriminated against because of a policy of discrimination by their home nation, not because of general incompetence or corruption by their government, or generalized poverty. Receiving "political" asylum on the basis of generalized poverty and violence means that ANY poor person in the entire world can claim asylum, and that is simply not the intent of the political asylum status.

As I have mentioned (more than once) I believe that the USA and it's "allies" are responsible for much world poverty and attendant social breakdown in various parts of the world, so MY answer to the problem of illegal immigration, AMONG OTHER THINGS is leave other nations the fuck alone. First of all, let me point out that the Trump administration is doing nothing illegal. It's all in accordance with existing law. If you don't like what he's doing, maybe you should be thinking about changing the laws.

I work with a lot of immigrants. My friend from Ethiopia came to the US after being jailed for political activity. My friend from Burma was brought to the US as a small child by her parents who were trying to escape grinding poverty. My friend from Korea was also brought to the US (when he was 11) by his parents who were also trying to escape poverty. The difference is they came here LEGALLY. They applied, they waited in line, they became citizens.

Nobody NEEDS to cross the border illegally. The legal option is always there.

So why don't these illegal border-crossers use the legal option? Why do they insist they have some kind of right to come across the border without permission?

For decades, the US has used the porous border as a flexible source of cheap labor. Consequently, EXISTING LAWS weren't enforced. No large efforts were made to apprehend people crossing over, and if caught, people were simply bussed back over instead of prosecuted. Some people were caught and sent back multiple times. From the other side, it looks like people came to expect access as part of an unstated deal - we're ready to do cheap work so you have the duty to let us in.

But - let me repeat this - the laws already exist to apprehend AND PROSECUTE anyone who crosses the border illegally. What Trump is doing is enforcing existing laws.

When I hear about people who have left because gangs were threatening their business or their home, or because someone was being threatened by their spouse, I have to wonder .... if they were so desperate as to make the multi-hundred or even multi-thousand mile journey to the USA .... did they ever try just moving to a different part of the city? Or to a different city or different province altogether? Or just across the border to another nation, like (say) Costa Rica? I mean, heck, if I were the target of a gang in LA, and it was THAT bad, I'd probably try to move to someplace else within the USA first, where I know the language. I wouldn't immediately think ...CRAP! I have to move to Quebec!

And if not, why not?

Here's my guess ... because the poverty is just as bad "there" as in the neighborhood. It's probably not "just" violence that people are escaping. I'll get back to that in a bit.

GSTRING, it would be useful if you put YOUR brain into gear once in a while!

WHY are people desperate? What is the cause of their poverty? If you can fix that, then you wouldn't have to "help" so many poor.

I remind you once again of the story of washerwomen who go to the river to wash clothes, and they see babies ... helpless babies, floating down the river, dead and drowning. One woman falls into hysterical crying. Several other women form a chain, pulling babies out as fast as they can, even tho they know they';ll never be able to help them all. The last woman turns around and starts running upriver.

Stop!!! implore the women of the human chain We need you to help pull babies out of the river!!

I can't she yells over her shoulder I'm going upstream to find the bastards who are throwing them in!

That is the source of my quote I don't believe in sharing problems, I believe in solving them Also Pity would be no more, If we did not MAKE men poor. Poverty - especially nationwide poverty- doesn't just "happen", and it's not the result of personal misfortune, it is the end result of a process.

Find the source of the problem, and solve it. But that is why I find you, THUGR, KRAPO, and SECOND to be such hypocrites ... or at least incredible mental midgets. Each in your own way support and promote the very problems that you pretend to care about. Let's talk about the causes of poverty, and how we can stop it, instead of "helping" its victims.

You have a link for that? Or are you crowing about non-existent facts, again?

People are free to seek asylum in the US at any time from within their own borders. Prosecuting illegal border-crossers doesn't change that. What this does is cut down the incentive to cross illegally without legally seeking asylum first.

I think what happened was that Trump blustered about illegal immigrants, and the numbers (which had been slowly historically dropping) plummeted. But in March the numbers surged and rose to the levels of the previous year. https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/04/politics/border-crossings-spike-trump-e
ffect/index.html
I believe the policy of actually enforcing existing laws and jailing and prosecuting offenders is meant to send a message: illegal border crossing will not be tolerated.
