The United States threatened to hit Ecuador with retaliatory trade measures and to pull military aid over the South American country proposing an international resolution that encouraged breastfeeding. The US eventually agreed to the resolution — when Russia backed it.

American officials surprised international delegates at the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly in May when they opposed a widely popular resolution to promote breastfeeding, according to a report from Andrew Jacobs at the New York Times on Sunday. Specifically, they pushed to remove language asking governments to “protect, promote, and support breast-feeding.” They also took issue with a passage that called for policymakers to restrict the promotion of food products that may harm children.

It appears the Trump administration sided with corporate interests — in this case, the $70-billion infant formula industry — over the health and well-being of kids around the globe. The baby food industry is primarily based in the US and Europe.

The Americans were so ardent in their opposition they made serious threats to Ecuadorian delegates, who were going to introduce the resolution. According to the Times, the Americans said if Ecuador didn’t drop the proposal, “Washington would unleash punishing trade measures and withdraw crucial military aid.”

The resolution ultimately made its way through thanks to Russia, which decided to step in because “we feel that it is wrong when a big country tries to push around some very small countries, especially on an issue that is really important for the rest of the world,” a Russian delegate told the Times. The US didn’t make the same threats to Russia as it did Ecuador, and the resolution was passed mostly in its original form.

You know it's gotten bad when fucking RUSSIA says "ok, that's enough.."

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"It appears the Trump administration sided with corporate interests — in this case, the $70-billion infant formula industry — over the health and well-being of kids around the globe. The baby food industry is primarily based in the US and Europe."

The other part of the story is that a number of other small, poor, third-world countries were asked to sponsor the pro-breastfeeding bill, but they, too, felt they couldn't withstand Trump's economic retaliation if they did so.

So why didn't Britain propose it?

Or France, or Germany, Australia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, or Iceland? How about Austria, Switzerland, or The Netherlands? Maybe Italy, Spain or Portugal? Certainly there were plenty of alternatives. What was THEIR big holdup? You see, maybe Trump isn't as uniquely greedy as you think.

SECOND is a troll because it constantly misrepresents what people post, fails to address their actual positions, and resorts to personal attacks when its brain isn't working (which is most of the time).

We, as humans, have always been greedy and bad at sharing (as I have pointed out several hundred times), but Trump is the King Deplorable with his finger on the "Make America Greedy/Gaudy Again" button. The rest of his minions are just following suit.

This in NO FUCKING WAY means Russia is a better alternative. I'm thoroughly!!! surprised they said ANYTHING.

I high-fived WISHY for the reaction, but pointed out that our Evil Empire didn't begin with Trump.

Do you know HOW LONG this infant-formula v breast-feeding issue has been going on? I first heard about it forty five years ago. That might have even been before either one of you were born.

Nestle (yes, THAT Nestle) was publicly castigated for having its African infant-formula sales force show up in nurse's uniforms at villages, explaining the benefits of infant formula. Well, because they were wearing nurse's uniforms and the babies on the labels looked so chubby and happy, the mothers thought they were getting sound medical advice that formula was special, that it had something, or more of something that breast milk didn't. Of course, the water that they used to make up the concentrate was often contaminated with bacteria, viruses, and parasites. And the infant formula was expensive, so it was over-diluted. The whole move to infant formula led to an outbreak of sick, undernourished babies. A boycott was launched in 1977; here's the info so you know that I'm not just blowing smoke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestl%C3%A9_boycott I think didn't eat Nestle chocolate for over ten years.

There have been a lot of American Presidents during the forty-five years since this first became an issue. But heck, Nestle made a lot of money off its infant formula sales ... just like they make a lot of money today, over-extracting groundwater and causing local wells to go dry, and selling the water in bottles for lots of money. To this day, I refuse to buy bottled water.

I can point to instance after instance of transnationals making a crap-ton of money exploiting the poor and uneducated (including those here in America), with the tacit or active support of American Presidents.

But then, I can point to a lot of American Presidents who have outright killed tens, if not hundreds of thousands of children, and not just by passively allowing exploitation but through active warfare. It's been a horror-show for a long time.

Yes, we should be better than Russia. So, why aren't we? (Please don't say "Trump", that's a dishonest answer, and you know it.) If we were to do some real thinking about WHY American Presidents, both Democratic and Republican, have supported exploitation and warfare for decades and decades with nary a pause to recognize the destruction and death that we leave in our wake, then maybe we might have a prayer of stopping it.

But if you think that getting rid of one President, or flipping the political party in the WH/ Congress will fix things, you're sadly mistaken.

Yes, that's 'ZACTLY what I meant...Oh wait, I mean that other thing.

I think we oughtta make EVERYONE take what is basically a FREE year long Ethics and Governance course and if you pass, you get a super encrypted voting device...one person, one vote... on EVERYTHING. Retina scan, thumbprint, voice ID...the WORKS... Make voting and being a citizen something that has to be studied for and worked for and you have to prove yourself a human being...not just memorizing who did... whatever... in 1798. Murder someone, lose your Voter permanently. Go on a racist rampage, lose your Voter for a year. Drunk Driving? 10 years. Having NO say would make people feel powerless and discourage crime at the same time. And because they actually had to work to get it, they might think twice before doing something that takes it away.

Actually, I think we ought to call the super encrypted voting device "The Mark of The Beast" and therefore automatically rule out the stuporsticious and illogical. We would already be a 1000 steps ahead in being a better place then.

I never said I was smart at everything...in fact, I'll say it again...EVERYONE is smart about something and ignorant about somethings...but at least I'M trying. Come stand at a local PTA meeting and tell me these people have EVER tried.

Wildlife is dying out due to habitat destruction, overhunting, toxic pollution, invasion by alien species and climate change. But the ultimate cause of all of these factors is “human overpopulation and continued population growth, and overconsumption, especially by the rich”, say the scientists, who include Prof Paul Ehrlich, at Stanford University in the US, whose 1968 book The Population Bomb is a seminal, if controversial, work.

“The serious warning in our paper needs to be heeded because civilisation depends utterly on the plants, animals, and microorganisms of Earth that supply it with essential ecosystem services ranging from crop pollination and protection to supplying food from the sea and maintaining a livable climate,” Ehrlich told the Guardian. Other ecosystem services include clean air and water.

Or 40 years from now.

Well, first of all ... we have to get to a point of discussing the issues honestly and objectively, which means accepting facts as facts, keeping events in proportion (i.e, not blowing small things out proportion while at the same time ignoring larger events) and responding to the points made, and not to the person making them.

So.

WISHY - The reason why I keep bringing up the past is not because you or I can do anything about it now, but indicates what the source of the problem is ... or at least, what the source of the problem isn't.

I assume that we both agree on what we mean by "Evil Empire" but if you think this needs further clarification now is the time to get that done.

****
Assuming that we both mean the same thing ... If we see the same pattern ("Evil Empire") repeating itself over 60 years, whether a Democrat or Republican President is in power, that indicates that the problem isn't with Democrats or Republicans per se, which means that changing Democrats for Republicans ... or vice versa .... isn't going to be the solution. Agreed so far?

And if not, why not?

Like YOU would know what "they" say?

Maybe you could try reading Glenn Greenwald, or Matt Taibbi*, or Seymour Hirsch, or Jeremy Scahill once in a while. Yannop, get out of your comfort zone. Altho I have to say, if you had been around in the 60s, your heads would have collectively exploded!

*He once described Goldman Sachs as
Quote:

"The world's most powerful investment bank is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money."
What an awesome quote!

In the meantime, it was you, WISHY, who described the United States as the Evil Empire. What do YOU suppose is the source of this, and what is the solution (besides total annihilation of the human species, that is)?

Never claimed to know. All I know is what is making EVERYTHING worse, and it's Trumptards. Saw a graph the other day of all the states where all these tariff affected goods are made, and that the vast majority are from the south. He's screwing HIS OWN BASE AND THEY LOVE HIM FOR IT. They will have to fail completely before they get who is to blame. I've never seen a bigger indicator of mental illness in my life...

How about putting those troubleshooting skills to work and coming up with a concept?

ETA: I gather that you did some home renovation. I'm sure that you solved a number of problems along the way, so you probably have some troubleshooting experience. Well, in order to fix something, you have to first identify the problem. It doesn't help to change a lightbulb if the problem is the light switch. That's why I'm appealing to your troubleshooting skills ... if you've developed them thru hard experience, they can be useful in areas outside of your original experience. Just a thought.

Oh, OK. Thanks! It looked like a verb. Without it, I couldn't understand the entire sentence.

"Draining the swamp" takes on a new horrible facet...

GARDEN CITY, Ind. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence turns nostalgic when he talks about growing up in small-town Columbus, Indiana, where his father helped build a Midwestern empire of more than 200 gas stations that provided an upbringing on the “front row of the American dream.”

The collapse of Kiel Bros. Oil Co. in 2004 was widely publicized. Less known is that the state of Indiana — and, to a smaller extent, Kentucky and Illinois — are still on the hook for millions of dollars to clean up more than 85 contaminated sites across the three states, including underground tanks that leaked toxic chemicals into soil, streams and wells.

(Mike Pence's brother) Greg Pence wasn't out of work for long. Within months, Daniels appointed him deputy commissioner of the Department of Environmental Management, the same agency fighting Kiel Bros. in court. Pence stepped down after only a few months, however, and returned to the petroleum business.

“Why did we absolve the company that we think the problem started with?” said Kevin Butler, a former teacher whose father was one of the first to smell the oil. “It just doesn’t seem very logical that this problem would be centered to this area, and confined to this area, if it wasn’t the responsibility of that company.”

Indiana has since spent more than $860,000 cleaning up the petroleum. The EPA estimates it could cost $320,000 to $1.6 million to take care of the TCE, which taxpayers will likely foot the bill for.

After Kiel Bros. filed for bankruptcy, more than 500 creditors sought more than $150 million from the company, with the state of Indiana filing one of the largest claims, records show

So basically, they dropped the businesses when they realized how much it would cost to clean them up, and then got appointed to the Dept. of Environmental Management as a cover-up.
