Army is considering more electronic warfare teams, longer tours

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – The Army is adding more personnel to its electronic warfare and air defense teams to keep up with emerging global threats, Army Secretary Mark Esper said following discussions with servicemembers and officials in Germany on Monday.

The Army’s transition comes at a time when it is reshaping its force to deal with potential threats from near-peer adversaries like Russia and away from counterinsurgency campaigns that have dominated recent U.S. warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan.

THUGR ... Before we start worrying about "western" democracy, let's start with worrying about OURS.

So, what are the bases of our democracy?

Well, we can look to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights for our clues:

Separation of powers.
States' rights.
Right to vote.
Free speech.
Right to own weapons.
Freedom from warrantless search and seizure.
Due process, equal to all.
Right to a speedy public trial by a jury of peers.
No excessive bail.
https://constitution.com/bill-rights/

I frankly do not see how Russia HAS interfered with any of this, and altho I can imagine how Russia COULD interfere with the vote- for example, by literally hacking the voter rolls or the count, the rest of it is up to us, isn't it?

All of the transgressions of our democracy have been by OUR GOVERNMENT, as far as I can tell.

According to a report from USA Today, Russia has interfered in dozens of elections since 2004. The total adds up to 27 countries over the course of 12 years, but it appears that none have been more consequential than last year’s presidential race. Again, though — 2016 looks like it was just the tip of the iceberg. Since November 2016, Russia has been hard at it in other countries, too.

Would anybody like to reply to this with a list of all of the international governments that we've interfered with in the last few decades? Please feel free to go back as far as you'd like if you're bored.

I'm not saying that I condone Russia's interference. I'm just pointing out that anybody vilifying Russia for doing this is either completely ignorant of what exactly it is that the US Government does, or is so full of hubris that they think we should be the only ones doing it. The latter being entirely hypocritical coming from someone who has such a high opinion of the UN in relation to American politics.

Apparently nobody wants to, altho there are more than a few examples of us interfering with bullets instead of a few tweets.

******

Anyway, I'd like to get back to THUGR's concern that Russia wants to "upend Western democracy". I think before we start worrying about "western" democracy, let's start with worrying about OURS.

So, what are the bases of our democracy? As I posted before, I think we can look to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights for our clues:

Separation of powers.
States' rights.
Right to vote.
Free speech.
Right to own weapons.
Freedom from warrantless search and seizure.
Due process, equal to all.
Right to a speedy public trial by a jury of peers.
No excessive bail.
https://constitution.com/bill-rights/

How has Russia upended them?

*****

The reason why I keep coming back to the question of what it takes to protect ... or conversely, upend ... democracy is because I see so many people actually trampling democracy in their (presumed) rush to "protect" it.

Let's start with 9-11, an attack (of some sort) on America. People were killed, and terror was instilled in the hearts of many. And yet, instead of PROTECTING our democracy by preserving the very protections and freedoms that are supposed to be its basis, the Bush administration whipped out a (conveniently pre-written) piece of legislation called the Patriot Act which allows our so-called "security agencies" broad powers such as the Founding Fathers never dreamed: "sneak and peek" searches; warrants that are so secret that merely revealing their existence is a crime; warrantless access to commercially-kept records; cooperation between the CIA, FSA, and FBI etc etc. Between that, the creation of "Homeland Security"; the (secret) institution of near-universal warrantless electronic surveillance; and the imprisonment and execution of American citizens without a jury trial I think Bush and Obama did more to destroy "democracy" than bin Laden ever did.

That's just one example; I hope that THUGR, REAVER, etc will come to the defense of democracy and tell us how it can be saved without being destroyed in the process.

What our stupid russian defending trolls have yet to figure out, is that if you read the thread you see who defends russia and who does not. If you read any of the threads that mention russia you see who deflects negative stories away and defends russia, and who it is that posts the factual negative stories about russia.

What our stupid troll THUGR has yet to figure out is that this isn't about "attacking" of "defending" Russia (or at least, it shouldn't be), but DEFENDING OUR DEMOCRACY.

So THUGR, is there any way to "defend" democracy WITHOUT trampling it to death in an eagerness to attack other countries?

CUE THE LIBELOUS PERSONAL ATTACK IN 3... 2... 1...

I noticed that you have NOTHING TO SAY ON DEFENDING DEMOCRACY. You two are soooo concerned about Russia, one would almost think that YOU live there.

I've provided one example of how "defending democracy" against "terrorism" has cost us a big chunk ... of our democracy. I can point out similar examples how we, in our stampede to "defend democracy" have done a great deal to undercut it more than any outsider could have done.

So, do you have any ideas how to "defend democracy" without trampling it to death? Or do you just want to continue trampling on the Constitution in your eagerness to attack Russia (or "terrorism", or "fascism")?

Getting to the bottom of Russia's interference in our elections and finding out why Trump is so beholding to Putin is defending our democracy. Hence the Russia investigation. Only a Russian troll would suggest otherwise.

Uh huh.

Say, how do you feel about hand-marked ballots, counted by hand? I think that's a better "defense of democracy" than all of your accusations, libel, and spittle, don't you think?

At UN, Russia says meddling claims baseless, slams the US

UNITED NATIONS — Russia’s foreign minister trashed accusations of Russian meddling abroad as “baseless” and used the podium at the U.N.’s biggest event to tear into U.S. policies in Iran, Syria and Venezuela. He later declared that U.S.-Russian relations “are bad and probably at their all-time low.”

In a rapid-fire, unforgiving speech Friday, Sergey Lavrov pounded away at “self-serving” unilateral moves by U.S. President Donald Trump and assailed crippling Western sanctions against Russia as “political blackmail.”

Lavrov deflected accusations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a nerve agent attack in Britain and other meddling abroad — despite mounting evidence of a broad, coordinated influence campaign.

He criticized “baseless accusations of interference in the internal affairs of certain countries” and turned it around against the West, accusing unnamed forces of “overt endeavors to undermine democratically elected governments,” in an apparent reference to U.S. and EU support for Russia’s neighbors and the Syrian opposition.

Justice Dept. indicts 7 Russian intelligence officers in international hacking scheme
https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/04/politics/justice-department-russian-int
elligence-officers/index.html

The Justice Department on Thursday announced criminal charges against seven Russian intelligence officers, accusing them in a sprawling indictment of hacking, wire fraud, identity theft and money laundering as part of an effort to distract from Russia's state-sponsored doping program.

Three of the defendants were also charged in the hacking of US persons involved in the 2016 election, Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division John Demers said during a news conference, but the current indictment does not arise out of special counsel Robert Mueller's work.

According to the indictment, all seven defendants are members of the GRU, a Russian Federation intelligence agency within the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian military. They are accused of sophisticated cyberintrusions and the victims were anti-doping agencies and officials, sporting federations, and nearly 250 athletes.

In addition to anti-doping agencies, the GRU targeted others, including the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, a nuclear energy company in Pennsylvania.

The indictment alleges the GRU officers used spearphishing emails, fictitious personas and researched their victims.

Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher and his ties to Russian Operative Natalia Veselnitskaya.

Two months ago Republican Congressman Rohrabacher was defending and normalizing Russia's attacks against the U.S.[1]

Republican Congressman Rohrabacher and President Trump were two individuals that Republican House Majority leader Kevin McCarthy claimed were paid by Putin. It was during this conversation where Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan interjected and swore those present to secrecy, stopping the conversation.[2]

"There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016

... Ryan instructed his Republican lieutenants to keep the conversation private, saying: “No leaks. . . . This is how we know we’re a real family here.”

One of the Russian operatives present at the infamous Trump Tower meeting,[3] Natalia Veselnitskaya - an outspoken opponent of the Magnitsky Act,[4] was present at a black-tie inauguration event hosted by Congressman Rohrabacher.[5] Congressman Rohrabacher met with Julian Assange in 2017, he attempted to convince President Trump to absolve Assange of any legal troubles he may face in the United States.[6]

Yesterday Russian Deputy Attorney General Saak Karapetyan was killed in a helicopter accident in Russia, he directed Russian operative Natalia Veselnitskaya.^[7]

Republican Congressman and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes has been covering up the Russia/Trump scandal, he preemptively shut down the House Intelligence Investigation.

Representative Nunes and other leaders of the Republican party have been complicit in allowing a foreign adversary attack the United States of America. In fact they are openly inviting further interference.

4th of July, 2018 A group of Republican Senators travel to Moscow and meet Foreign Minister Lavrov.[1] Russian state propaganda brazenly asserted that “Trump is ours,” and joke that the U.S. lawmakers traveled to Russia *“to make deals with our hackers, so they can rig the midterms in favor of Trump’s team."*[2]

18th of July, 2018 House Republicans refuse to renew election security funding.[3]

1st of August, 2018 Republican Senators block $250 million amendment for election security.[4]

1st of August, 2018 In a joint press conference top Trump administration officials Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, FBI Director Chris Wray, National Security Advisor John Bolton, and NSA Director General Paul Nakasone accuse Russia of continuing their information warfare and election meddling against the United States of America.[5]

6th of August, 2018 Republican Senator Rand Paul invites Russian politicians to Washington.[6]

8th of August, 2018 Republican Senator Rand Paul visits Moscow and delivers a letter from President Trump to President Vladimir Putin.[7]

25th of September, 2018 Senator Rand Paul filed an amendment to remove Russia sanctions.[8]

President Trump and the Republican party leadership have been complicit in refusing to address Russian aggression, in fact they are inviting more interference. Russia is taking full advantage of America's biggest weakness - their division on what to do about Russia as many GOP lawmakers refuse to admit that Russia is actively attacking American institutions and infrastructure. For example a recording of Republican Congressman Devin Nunes talking at a GOP fundraiser was leaked recently, he implored the guests to support him and the Republican party so that they could protect President Trump from the Russia probe.[9] Representative Nunes is the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, he led a vote in the committee to shut down their Russia probe investigation several months ago.[10] Devin Nunes put an end to the investigation when we know of at least 70 contacts between the Trump team and Russia-linked operatives, the committee obtained either no or incomplete information about 81% of known contacts between Trump officials and Russians.[11]

Would Trump be president without Russia? Probably not, says Penn prof. Kathleen Hall Jamieson
https://www.thedp.com/article/2018/10/kathleen-hall-jamieson-russia-20
16-election-book-upenn-philadelphia-annenberg

"“First, I wouldn’t call it Russian meddling— that’s a benign term and I don’t think anything they did was benign,” Jamieson said.

For her, it’s a vital distinction. When the press uses words such as “meddling” and “interfering,” it can downplay the significance of what occurred, Jamieson said.

“I want to call this cyberattack. We were attacked by the Russians,” Jamieson said.

Jamieson stated the hacking of emails from Hillary Clinton, her campaign chairman, and the Democratic National Committee were attempts to discredit Clinton and frame her as untrustworthy to undecided voters.

“They attacked the private email and private content of candidates and a political party essentially, and then released it into our media system,” Jamieson said.

The main areas of the attack, according to Jamieson, center on Russian hackers spreading misinformation and influencing voters.

“They came into our social media structures and pretended they were other people, pretended they were like us, and used those identities to spread fear and anger and prejudice in ways that were consistent with Donald Trump’s objectives,” Jamieson said."

If "the people" are so weak-minded that they can be influenced by 0.001% content, then there's a lot more wrong with democracy than Russia.

People SHOULD be mentally much more robust to outside ideas; they should be able to parse information rationally no matter what the source; remember what happened ten days .. or ten years... ago; and be able to identify their own interests so that they can judge campaign promises realistically.

It's people who respond purely emotionally, who can't identify their own interests clearly, who are vulnerable to advertising and propaganda who are the biggest weak point in democracy.

The answer to this problem isn't to further infantilize people by packing them in cotton wool and keeping them in the dark, but to equip them with the tools of logic and expose them to "the marketplace of ideas".

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"Jamieson stated the hacking of emails from Hillary Clinton, her campaign chairman, and the Democratic National Committee were attempts to discredit Clinton and frame her as untrustworthy to undecided voters."

This is misleading. Clinton's (private server on which she conducted State Department official business) was never publicly breached. The fact that she scrubbed the server after it was subpoenaed did, and should have, reflected badly on her as 'untrustworthy. And, since I need to point it out: that was Clinton's decision that had nothing to do with 'Russia'.

Podesta's email was breached in a phishing campaign.

And researchers as well as Assange - who received the emails from a known person - both say the DNC server was not hacked by Russians, it was locally copied to a portable drive by a person with official access.

But hey - never let the facts get in the way of the narrative!
