I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Is Woodward trying to torpedo peace talks?

Every time something comes out in "the media", I wonder about the motivation behind it. Sometimes it's clear that the goal is simply "money", but in politics the motives are quite a bit murkier.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Several ranking people supposedly quoted in the book have already disavowed their supposed quotes as fictitious.

If NK cancels negotiations because of a book published by an avowed partisan and documented liar (see above) then either they're stupider than we thought or they're just looking for a way out. If Trump cancels the negotiations because of the book then he's a spineless dweeb.

North Korea is upping the ante ahead of a possible second summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, with a threat to resume its nuclear development program if the US-led sanctions against it are not lifted.

At the heart of the threat is the word pyongjin, which refers to the “dual advancement” of nuclear forces and economic development.

A statement released Friday evening (Nov. 2) by the North Korean foreign ministry’s Institute for American Studies reads:

“If the US keeps behaving arrogantly without showing any change in its stand, while failing to properly understand our repeated demand, the DPRK may add one thing to the state policy for directing all efforts to the economic construction adopted in April and as a result, the word ‘pyongjin’ may appear again… The US thinks that its oft-repeated ‘sanctions and pressure’ leads to ‘denuclearization.’ We cannot help laughing at such a foolish idea.”

Kim Jong-un is not dismantling or halting anything related to North Korea’s nuclear program:

North Korea has loudly dismantled one base while quietly making improvements to a dozen others.

They are continuing to produce large amounts of nuclear fuel.

They are evading sanctions by making soft, cooing noises to Trump, which he has eagerly returned.

Obama’s early warning satellites over North Korea are in limbo thanks to “bureaucratic disputes” within the Trump administration.

North Korea is engaged in a “Great Deception”. The dealmaker-in-chief has been suckered almost entirely by his good friend Kim Jong-un.

North Korea will not give up its nuclear arms unless the “U.S. nuclear threat to Korea” is eliminated, North Korean state media said Thursday.
Washington Post

New CSIS report reveals another of 20 undisclosed North Korean missile sites.

Somebody, maybe 6ix, should tell Trump about those 20 missile sites.

Trump on Saturday told reporters that “things are going very well with North Korea,” and that Washington and Pyongyang “have made a lot of progress as far as denuclearization is concerned.” Trump has tended to downplay the threat from North Korea in tweets: “everybody can now feel much safer” and that "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea." Again, why has Trump not been told about those 20 missile sites?

A Pentagon report released on Thursday, however, said that North Korea’s missile and nuclear program remained an “extraordinary threat” to the United States.

I remember what I believed: that Bush and Cheney were lying about the WMDs.
www.newsweek.com/2015/05/29/dick-cheneys-biggest-lie-333097.html

I also remember an agreement that Republicans broke with North Korea. In exchange for shutting down a nuclear reactor that makes plutonium for North Korean nukes, the USA and South Korea would provide electricity for North Korea. Republican Senators would not pay, so the reactor kept on making more and more bomb material.
www.nti.org/learn/countries/north-korea/nuclear/

It came down to typical Republican confusion about how to get what you want. According to the GOP, the North Koreans should not build nukes, but America should also not pay to get them to stop. The North Koreans should just stop because America loudly demanded they stop.

www.nti.org/learn/countries/north-korea/nuclear/
The crisis was defused in June 1994 when former U.S. President Jimmy Carter traveled to Pyongyang to meet with Kim Il Sung. Carter announced from Pyongyang that Kim had accepted the broad outline of a deal that was later finalized as the Agreed Framework in October 1994. [20] Under the agreement, North Korea agreed to freeze work at its gas-graphite moderated reactors and related facilities, and to allow the IAEA to monitor that freeze. Pyongyang was also required to "consistently take steps to implement the North-South Joint Declaration on the Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," and to remain a party to the NPT. In exchange, the United States agreed to lead an international consortium to construct two light water power reactors, and to provide 500,000 tons of heavy fuel oil per year until the first reactor came online with a target date of 2003. Furthermore, the United States was to provide "formal assurances against the threat or use of nuclear weapons by the U.S." [21]

The Nuclear Threat Initiative www.nti.org is being polite, but at every step of the way the GOP builds roadblocks to prevent disarming the nuclear nations. Trump will probably be no different. He will want to skip a few steps along the way to denuclearizing North Korea, because the steps cost money and require patience and fulfilling promises. He won't take the steps. He will blame N Korea for everything gone wrong, not himself or his Senate Majority.

North Korea won't disarm because Trump has a new nuke, one that is perfect for assassinating Kim Jong-un when launched from a sub just off shore of N Korea. Kim will definitely mention it when he sees Trump next month:
www.npr.org/2019/01/28/689510716/trump-administration-begins-productio
n-of-a-new-nuclear-weapon

The National Nuclear Security Administration says production of the weapon, known as the W76-2, has begun at its Pantex Plant in the Texas Panhandle. Last year the Trump administration made the case for the development of a smaller nuclear weapon that could be launched from a submarine. The Energy Department would not provide details about the W76-2, but it's believed to have a yield of around 5 to 7 kilotons, Kristensen says. That smaller yield is probably created by removing or disabling the secondary stage of the W76-1.

If Trump wants Korea to disarm, it was not smart for him to sign an appropriations package in September that pays $65 million to modify the W76-1 warhead for the Navy’s Trident II D5 ballistic missile into a W76-2 warhead.
www.defensenews.com/congress/2018/09/20/democrats-trying-to-ban-low-yi
eld-nuclear-warhead
/

Unfortunately for the possibility of a peace treaty, the warhead will have the Kim Jong-un name stenciled on the nose.

Trump’s own intelligence officials are publicly saying that he’s a moron about N Korea. And Iran. And Islamic State:
www.nytimes.com/2019/01/29/us/politics/intelligence-chiefs-senate-thre
ats-.html

A new American intelligence assessment of global threats has concluded that North Korea is “unlikely to give up” all of its nuclear stockpiles, and that Iran is not “currently undertaking the key nuclear weapons-development activity” needed to make a bomb, directly contradicting two top tenets of President Trump’s foreign policy. Daniel R. Coats, the director of national intelligence, also challenged Mr. Trump’s insistence that the Islamic State had been defeated, a key rationale for his decision to exit from Syria.

. . . Mr. Coats told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday that “we currently assess North Korea will seek to retain its W.M.D. capability and is unlikely to completely give up its nuclear weapons and production capability . . . Its leaders ultimately view nuclear weapons as critical to regime survival,” Mr. Coats said.

OK, OK, Coats didn’t call Trump a moron. Still, it’s a little unusual for the intelligence community to publicly say the president is mistaken on three separate major issues. Keep in mind that the heads of the intelligence agencies are all Trump appointees. And apparently they all agree that he’s an idiot.

Trump lowers expectations on North Korea after his intelligence chiefs contradicted his rosy outlook.

For months, President Donald Trump and top administration officials have maintained that they struck an agreement with North Korea last June to end its nuclear program.

But after US intelligence officials on Tuesday openly contradicted that, stating that North Korea likely won’t give up its arsenal, Trump seems to be walking that back:

“Decent chance of denuclearization,” he tweeted on Wednesday. “Time will tell what will happen with North Korea.”
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1090573972306038784

A “decent chance.” That, folks, is what people in the political world call “moving the goalposts.”

That’s a far cry from the comments Trump made in June — just hours after meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the first time — in which the president stated that there was “no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea.”

I am expecting that Kim will meet and completely bedazzle Trump next month. Trump will once again claim a historic victory in disarming North Korea, but all he really did was swallow a bunch of lies from Kim, a more skilled liar than himself.

Many of the experts are taking to the airwaves pointing out that America has the best intel and advisers who study this shit for a living. That America spends billions and billions on intel and experts to dicipher what we glean. That Trump not only goes with his gut but he dismisses the many billions of dollars spent and the people who do this for a living as wrong. He insists he knows best.

More Second that points to dummies like jack being, well, dummies for backing Trumps gut over all gathered evidence.

Here is the threat assessment. If you read it, you will have started before Trump got around to it:

Statement For The Record
Worldwide Threat Assessment Of The US Intelligence Community
Daniel R. Coats
Director of National Intelligence
Senate Select Committee on Intelligence
29 JANUARY 2019
www.dni.gov/files/ODNI/documents/2019-ATA-SFR---SSCI.pdf

Despite the fact that those statements were made on live television before Congress, and were also written down and entered into the congressional record, Trump is now claiming that none of that happened and that the media is lying:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
Just concluded a great meeting with my Intel team in the Oval Office who told me that what they said on Tuesday at the Senate Hearing was mischaracterized by the media - and we are very much in agreement on Iran, ISIS, North Korea, etc. Their testimony was distorted press........I would suggest you read the COMPLETE testimony from Tuesday. A false narrative is so bad for our Country. I value our intelligence community. Happily, we had a very good meeting, and we are all on the same page!

Here is what President Trump has said on key issues:

ISIS is defeated in Syria.
North Korea is “no longer a nuclear threat” and Kim Jong Un is committed to giving up his country’s nuclear weapons.
Russia didn’t interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
Climate change is a hoax.
Staying in the Iran nuclear deal would lead to that country acquiring nuclear weapons in “just a short time.”

(Trump's Director of National Intelligence does NOT agree, in writing and video, with any of Trump's baloney listed above.)

A North Korean Defector Shows How Kim Makes a Chump of Trump

Kim Jong Un used the threat of war — and Trump’s own hysterical rhetoric — to create a situation where he appears a peacemaker, and U.S. forces are out of the peninsula.

There is no way North Korea is going to give up its nukes, says Pyongyang’s most prominent defector. And if President Donald Trump doesn’t watch out, Thae Yong Ho predicts, he will slip into the quicksand of a deal that will lead “inevitably” to withdrawal of America’s 28,500 troops from South Korea.

In a meeting with foreign correspondents here, Thae outlined the dangers facing U.S. policy with the emergence of what he called “the Trump doctrine.” It bears a distinct resemblance, he said, to the “Nixon doctrine” that led the U.S. to pull its troops from South Vietnam and finally opened the way for North Vietnamese forces to overrun Saigon nearly half a century ago.

The fact that Trump will be sitting down with Kim Jong Un next week in Hanoi, capital of the Vietnamese regime that destroyed South Vietnamese forces in April 1975, deepened the scary image of looming disaster.

American and South Korean military officers are inclined to agree with Thae. Their greatest fear is that Trump will make significant concessions to Kim, going even beyond his surprise decision after the June summit in Singapore to cancel joint military exercises.

At the diplomatic level, Kim has been all take and no give. “In the past the international community has criticized the DPRK [North Korea] for its failure to honor agreements,” said Thae, “but there has been no such request to honor the Singapore agreement,” and that was vague to begin with.

At the end of the day, Thae suggested, North Korea is going to be accepted as “a de facto nuclear state,” and that being the case, the U.S. will have to talk about long term “disarmament” — a distinct climbdown from denuclearization.

Given all the dents the North Koreans have made in Seoul’s defenses through negotiations, Thae said, they “have strong confidence in their ability to drive U.S. forces from South Korea.”

This came out of nowhere. It appears Trump suggested to the South Koreans this should happen. He spoke to no one before hand. No advisors or anyone knowledgeable about North Korea to see if this was a good idea. He just set it up.

Bam, North Korea jumped at it. Trump had said the North had to denuclearize before talks. I guess he changed his mind.

Don't misunderstand, I want a miracle here. I am rooting Trump succeeds. I just don't' see it. He can't even negotiate successfully with a porn star. So far every foreign leader he has meet with has cleaned his clock.

Long story short. Trumps gets his clock cleaned again. What a fucking loser.

What news source do you read? The American Conservative, which is conservative, wrote:

Did Trump and Bolton Sabotage a North Korea Deal?

Whether this started as a cynical ploy to distract from domestic politics or not, it's all rapidly devolving into 'an utter disaster.'

Trump got tired and went home without dealing with the problem:

With Trump preparing to leave the hotel, North Korean Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son-hui hurriedly brought the US delegation a message from Kim, two senior administration officials and a person briefed on the matter said. The message amounted to a last-ditch attempt by the North Koreans to reach a deal on some sanctions relief in exchange for dismantling the Yongbyon nuclear complex.

US and North Korean officials had been haggling over a shared definition of the sprawling, three-square-mile site and the last-minute overture sought to advance the North Koreans’ proposal for dismantling it. But the message did not make clear whether the North Koreans shared the US’s expansive definition of the facility and US officials asked for clarity.

Choe rushed back to get an answer. Kim replied that it included everything on the site.

But even when Choe returned with that response, the US delegation was unimpressed and didn’t want to resume the negotiations. Within hours, Trump would be wheels up for Washington.

Trump traveled all that way, then he got lazy, bored with the details, and stopped working.

Why did Trump get so little accomplished while in Hanoi? REPORT: TRUMP CLOCKS IN ABOUT THREE HOURS OF WORK ON A GOOD DAY. The rest of his day is devoted to “executive time,” i.e. TV-watching and Twitter.
www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/10/trump-schedule-executive-time

The fact that Trump devotes so little time to actually doing his job might not necessarily be such a bad thing, but it’s still a marvel to behold.
