That is a good thing.

I have to wrestle down emotions when I read the disgusting example they used of somebody who benefited from it... Driving around their vehicle that cost more than all the cars I've owned combined, funded by selling a drug that has ruined lives of people I cared about in my past life.

It's still a good thing. Even if shitstains like this get to benefit from it too.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Have you read Dark Rivers of the Heart by Dean Koontz?

The problem with civil forfeiture is that local PDs use it to boost their budgets, often seizing property on the PRESUMPTION of guilt. There was a story about a man who had $12,000 confiscated, not because he had done anything wrong but because the local PD basically said that only a drug dealer would carry that much cash. The guy explained that he was going to buy a used car, showed them the Craig's List item, even offered to have them witness the sale, but it didn't make any difference: they took the money and refused to give it back. The PDs often operate on "guilty until proven innocent" when they take your cash, car, or house.

Oh... I know this.

And unfortunately, I don't think this ruling is going to do anything about fixing the example you just gave. That's the scary thing about cash. Just try to prove that those cops took your $12,000 after the fact. At least most departments are starting to force their officers to wear body cams at all times. I think that's best for everyone.

Like I said. It's a good ruling. You have to take the bad with the good.

Don't be surprised though when your property taxes go up and/or you start hearing everyone complaining about getting twice as many traffic tickets and/or your police force starts getting slashed now.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
