Damn the torpedos - full speed ahead. I'm all in - Impeach the lying f*cker now.
I thought Elizabeth Warren made a great case for doing so - stop thinking and hand wringing so much Dems, and do your job. Time to be agressive and uphold the constitution - give those GOP pinheads a taste of their own medicine and set the record for future presidents. No one is above the law - we're not a dictatorship. Time to make a stand and take action.

No prosecutor would indict if the case will go to a judge and jury who are relatives of the accused criminal. The judge and jury for Trump's trial will be Mitch McConnell and 53 Republican Senators. I know all of them, including Mitt Romney, would vote Trump to be innocent. Nancy Pelosi knows impeachment is a waste of time and it could actually do harm:

Absent public support for impeachment, and amid a strong economy, it would give the White House an opportunity to run the playbook Bill Clinton ran so successfully in the 1990s: Here’s Trump, focusing on economic growth, and there are the Democrats, focusing on their doomed vendetta against the president.

This is a strategy that would unite Republicans and split Democrats, and if Trump won reelection using it, then the harm to American democracy would be incalculable. Impeachment will backfire — strengthening Trump while weakening congressional Democrats’ ability to hold him accountable in the future. Far from protecting democracy and the rule of law, impeachment would undermine it.

Yeah.

Probably not a good idea to even put it on the table until there's actual evidence of any wrongdoing.

I was on that side originally, and believed in the solid political logic behind it. But the mostly gutless Dems always seem to outwit themselves and hem and haw, and ultimately find ways to DO NOTHING. That's their thing and it's not a good thing. They talk a lot and end up doing nothing. So they'll strategize and guess (and it is a guess, no matter how much you feel you know) and hope to play the odds and wait, and basically give him a pass. "You're guilty but we're not confident enough to uphold the law just yet. But watch out! We'll get you next time!" And they shift to hopefully winning the election. With... whom? So Trump wins, and he gets another 4 years and outlasts the 5 year statute of limitations on obstruction. Trump wins again. That's a lot of winning for that pos. Face it - both ways are guesses. One way is more principled. Time for Dems to shake off their weasilie past and skewer the fugger - at least put it down on the record.

Go ahead and impeach him, buddy.

It will be quite funny to see Trump break another record and become the first American President to be re-elected after impeachment (or at least a sad, failed attempt at one).

The cleanest way to get rid of Trump is to let God hit him with a meteor. Or Trump chokes on a steak. Otherwise, Democrats ought to wait patiently for Trump to do something weird when they reveal he underpaid his taxes by $10 billion. Trump's tax fraud might prevent him from being reelected. But you never know with voters.

I feel ya CC, but I'm with Second on this one. Look at Rappy, he really thinks Trump didn't do anything, and so will a lot of his base, most of them couldn't read between the lines to save their own lives. There are other battles coming I think.

That's because you guys are thinking like Democrats!
Trump will be prosecuted for other crimes for sure - the Southern District of New York for one - they seem to have a list and a well deserved vendetta against Dump.
As for now, either way is a best guess situation. The only thing you can really know and count on for sure, is that impeachment is there for this exact reason. Mueller's report is a trail of clues and instructions. Impeachment would also mean that if it was successful, some members of the GOP would have to acknowledge the need for it and that it was justified. That would signify a big change from the partisan gridlock we have now.
I'd also like to see him dragged over the coals on live tv. Have you seen any of his tv testimony from the past? I don't recall what it was for, but he looked even more like an old fool. That could lose him a boat load of votes. Giving him and the GOP more time to wiggle out of the sh*t he does in hopes of something better later, gets real old.

I noticed that there were no Impeachments between 1936 and 1986, but since then 6 people have been Impeached, 5 of them Democrat and the sole Republican by Dem House. Dem Houses Impeached each time, except Clinton.

Yet even if Trump were impeached by a Democratic-controlled House next year, his chances of being convicted and removed from office by the Senate would seem to be so low as to be virtually non-existent. Whatever happens in the mid-term elections, it is mathematically impossible for Democrats to gain a two-thirds majority in the Senate. Between 15 and 20 Republican senators would be needed to support the president’s removal from office, more than would have been necessary to convict Nixon had he not resigned first. Whatever they may think of Trump privately, Republican lawmakers have proved time and again that they will not take him on publicly.

Only if Trump’s popularity with Republican voters plummeted might that change, but why would that happen? All the evidence suggests that Trump’s supporters have no illusions about his character but want him to be their president anyway. Nixon, by contrast, had very low approval ratings by the time of his resignation, but that was in a less partisan age in which there was no equivalent of Fox News to provide the president’s supporters with an alternative narrative. Barring death, Trump seems likely to remain in office until at least the next election so long as he maintains the support of core Republican voters.

You think he's charismatic? You've got strange tastes.

In any case, while impeachment might be a moment of gratification and bonding for a certain percentage of voters, I don't think it's going to win any converts. Democrats need to hone their sales pitch to answer the voter question - what are you going to do to make my life better?

Thanks for the article. I'm well aware of the math. I know going in %-wise, it's probably a lost cause. But... I still feel that even if the only benefit is in retrospect, "at least we took a stand and had the b@lls to take him to task - because it's what we're suppose to do and not necessarily the politically expedient thing to do - we can always be inspired by that." Small victory, but otherwise? I don't have any faith in the voting public or the sanctity of the voting booth. I imagine RUSSIA! will only be emboldened by the removal of sanctions (the quo) and how Dump has removed much of the oversight on election intrusion. Another term only goes to solidify Dump/Putin alliance. And don't take any solace over "he can only get one more term." It won't be him, but he'll find some kind of desciple and we'll have Dump II. They - the GOP and the Dump whores - are solidifying their grasp on the small stuff, changing out judges, changing laws, changing regulations (how are those robocalls working for you? Did you notice that home equity lines of credit have just doubled? You can dig yourself into twice as much debt as ever. Talk about having control over people's lives). Of course, it will take a lot of time. Just slow enough that most people won't notice or care because they never cared.

I just realized how little energy I have left to go tilting at windmills.
I am too old for this shit...

I dunno. I look around and see bombings and shootings and people bankrupted by basic medical care and all the crap.... and I don't think picking battles purely for the edification of history and benefit of a dubious future is worth that much. If we evolve then people of the future are going to look on us poorly anyways. If we don't then nothing we do matters much in the long run either. When you have limited energy like I do, you learn to just put it into things that matter.

There is just so much to fix here. Trump is something that can't be. You can't ever convince someone with a personality disorder that there is something amiss because they always will believe they are awesome and will rationalize away anything else you say.

I'm not sure anything can be done about Russia until there's a Dem or other Prez who is willing to recognize the threat.

The special counsel makes his view plain in a single footnote.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/04/mueller-report-footnote-10
91-prosecute-trump-obstruction-post-presidency.html

In the report, it’s Footnote 1,091, which appears on Page 178.

The implication of both the passage and the subsequent footnote is clear: If Trump committed obstruction of justice, even through official actions, a prosecutor could charge him after his term has ended.

Further, impeachment would be no “substitute” for eventual criminal charges, and “Congress is not restricted to relying only on impeachment,” which is “a drastic and rarely invoked remedy.” This is pretty strong stuff, and it hasn’t received the attention it deserves.

6ix, you understood nothing. Actually what the Report said was that Mueller is operating under rules that forbid him from indicting the President with a crime. That was widely known in May of 2018:

Mueller's team told Trump's lawyers the special counsel cannot indict a sitting president
www.houstonchronicle.com/news/article/Mueller-s-team-told-Trump-s-lawy
ers-the-special-12920958.php

Robert Costa, Josh Dawsey and Carol D. Leonnig, The Washington Post May 16, 2018

WASHINGTON - Special counsel Robert Mueller III's team told President Donald Trump's lawyers recently that prosecutors do not believe they can charge a sitting president with a crime under Justice Department guidelines, Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani said Wednesday.

The special counsel's conclusion signals that it would be left to Congress to address any finding of wrongdoing by Trump in the investigation. Mueller's team is scrutinizing Russian interference in the 2016 election, whether the Russians coordinated with any Trump associates and whether the president has sought to thwart the probe.

Mueller indicated in a meeting a few weeks ago that he concurred with the view that a sitting president cannot be indicted under past legal opinions issued by the Justice Department, Giuliani told The Washington Post.

Giuliani said that Mueller at first tried to be "coy" when Giuliani asked the special counsel for his stance on the issue. One of Mueller's aides responded that the special counsel would follow Justice Department guidelines, he said.

A spokesman for the special counsel declined to comment.

Then what happened? Mueller wrote: "Fourth, if we had confidence after a thorough investigation of the facts that the President clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state. Based on the facts and the applicable legal standards, however, we are unable to reach that judgment." - Page 214 of 448

Translation: Trump is guilty as hell, but I cannot say that because of the rules and Attorney General Barr.

Well, I'm not offering sarcastic advice, I think the Dems should go balls to the wall on impeachment. Take it as far as they can, dig into every last nook and cranny, ferret out every detail. Let us all know what they find. Just wind it up six months before the next election so that they can't keep grandstanding on innuendo.

No one can trust the outcome of the next presidential election. Now is the time for impeachment.

Many Democratic Party leaders continue to say they would prefer to wait for the next election, to let the voters oust President Donald Trump in 2020.

Why would anyone believe that Trump would allow himself to be fired by American voters? What evidence is there over the past three years, or the course of his professional career, that suggests he would play by the rules?

Why would anyone who has read the Mueller report, or Trump’s tweets, or listened to the president’s former personal lawyer and co-workers, believe he would voluntarily step aside following an election to face possible criminal prosecution in federal and state courts?

How can anyone state without misgivings that Trump would not subvert the election process to protect his son, daughter and son-in-law?

Democrats, like much of America, seem to minimize the impact of Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election in 2016. But the evidence is abundant that it was a substantial effort and that the Russians are poised once again to interfere in the 2020 U.S. election campaign.

Whatever you think are the real issues, I predict there will be no progress on those for two years. The autopilot, not Trump, will be flying America. I hope there are no mountains to crash into. Trump is like an ordinary bus driver who found himself unexpectedly strapped into the pilot's chair without the sense to change altitude or heading to avoid a crash.

Trump’s longtime friend and former head of Fox News Roger Ailes used to say “if you want a career in television, first run for president.” And that’s just what Trump did, with plans to start a news network and become “the most famous man in the world.” There was nothing about being an effective president, only about being famous.

I wholeheartedly agree. Warren made a dead-on comment. Also, believe it or not, so did Hillary in her Op-Ed. She has called for a Watergate-type public investigation by Congress, whereby public hearings will present Mueller's findings, but also fill in the gaps of the road map to impeachment. Make these motherfuckers sweat on the witness stand, and it will show the American public
what Mueller laid out in his report.

But for the DOJ edict of not indicting a sitting president, that orange ugly motherfucker would be wearing an orange jumpsuit to match his skin.

That's what was in the Report. Anybody says different is a fucking mindless sheep.

The Joss Whedon script for Serenity, where Wash lives, is Serenity-190pages.pdf at https://www.mediafire.com/two

Mr. Trump has abandoned most of the core principles that have defined Republicans for the past century. What’s left of the party is Trumpism -- a rigid adherence to tax cuts and politics that regularly interfere with the basic functioning of the federal government.

Keeping President Trump in office is the best way to cement Trumpism’s hold on the Republican Party. That is a huge problem for Elected Republicans: By and large they don’t like him, and they know he’s a long-term problem for the party — but in the short term they know they can’t get re-elected without his voters. For Democrats, it’s the dream scenario — as long as he completes his term.

Nothing will unite an increasingly fraying Republican Party more than trying to remove the president anywhere but at the ballot box. And Democrats won't succeed in getting votes in the Senate to convict the president. In politics, a loss is a loss — there are no moral victories.

Allowing Mr. Trump to lead the Republican Party, filled with sycophants and weak-willed leaders, into the next election is the greater prize. Democrats have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to realign American politics along progressive lines, very much like Ronald Reagan did for Republicans in the 1980s.

Trumpism equals Republicanism as long as Donald Trump is at the top of the ticket. And a real shift to progressivism in America will be delivered by a devastating rebuke of the president and his party, a rebuke that will return control of the Senate and state houses across the nation. Politics is always a gamble — and this is the best bet we’ve had in a long time.

Keeping Trump in office will destroy the Republican Party.

Good call, that's what I say...otherwise every president from here on out will pull this same bullshit; then lets see how many of you will be crying like stuck pigs when a Dem says "fuck it, Trump did it, why can't I."

Really, it doesn't even have to be a Dem. Anybody who pulls this bullshit and
does whatever he wants will be within "his" rights to fuck the country without
lubricant or permission. In other words he will be a king. Just like this fucker. Again, the sheep will follow regardless. They fall for his bullshit.
And don't give me that shit about all politicians do it. The president doesn't get to do whatever he wants.

Remember, the country is governed by the Constitution. It's what got this prick elected. It's what also got the Senate and Congress elected. It's partly
why we are where we are. In other words there's more to it than the 2d Amendment. Them's the rules! So fuck him if he thinks they don't apply to him.
Him crying that it was an attempted coup is fucking ludicrous. It's the fucking law nimrod. The motherfucking Constitution, look it up idiots.

Here:

Quote:

The oath of office of the President of the United States is the oath or affirmation that the President of the United States takes after assuming the presidency but before carrying out any duties of the office. The wording of the oath is specified in Article II, Section One, Clause 8, of the United States Constitution.

This clause is one of two oath or affirmation clauses, but it alone actually specifies the words that must be spoken. The other, Article VI, Clause 3, simply requires the persons specified therein to "be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution." The presidential oath, on the other hand, requires much more than this general oath of allegiance and fidelity. This clause enjoins the new president to swear or affirm that he "will to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."[1]

And...

Quote:

Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:—"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."[2]

Take a gander...

Trump, due solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office of which I am about to enter. Captain, I agree with you 1000%. This sham cannot stand, they must impeach regardless whether he wins re-election or not. This will put a stamp on him that will be hard to shake. History will show his total lack of respect for the Rule of Law and for the office he holds.

If they don't, it will set a precedent. And that's not good.

Overall, a majority of Americans oppose impeachment with only 37 percent saying they favor starting the process. The number of Americans calling for impeachment has decreased with time. In August 2018, 49 percent of respondents believed President Trump should be impeached.

The majority of voters will respond to impeachment and its failure in the Senate. If Congressional Democrats vote for impeachment, in a kamikaze mission doomed to fail when it is blasted out of the sky by Republican Senators, they are also voting themselves out of office in 2020.

Well... to be fair, who in the world really knows how many people actually want impeachment today vs August of 2018? I'm sure both surveys were only around 1,200 people and it would be very easy to manipulate the data one way or another when you're only sampling such a small portion of the American public.

What has changed, for sure, since August of 2018 is the narrative.

I'm not sure where it's heading, but my guess is that the Democrats know that Trump is going to be in for 6 more years and they're hoping that something terrible happens to the economy before his second term is up.
