Trump's failure to reach a deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at their second summit in Vietnam last month dealt a blow to the President's most important foreign policy venture. The White House has rejected criticism of the lack of progress at the two meetings by arguing that the halt to North Korean nuclear and missile tests has been an important victory in itself.

But warnings by analysts based on satellite images that Pyongyang could be preparing to launch a missile or space rocket soon, threatened to undermine even that narrative of limited success.

Trump said last week that he would be "very disappointed if that were happening," while stressing the report was very early assessment.
The restoration work at the launch site could be just a negotiating ploy by Kim after the failure of the summit and just the latest round of decades-long brinkmanship by the North Koreans. But it does show the perils in investing so much political and electoral capital in a diplomatic initiative with the unpredictable North Koreans.

Trump surprises by revoking North Korea sanctions immediately after Treasury imposes them. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said: “President Trump likes Chairman Kim and he doesn’t think these sanctions will be necessary.”

www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-surprises-by-revoking-north-korea-sanct
ions-immediately-after-treasury-imposes-them

In what had been a move to ratchet up pressure further, the Treasury Department on Thursday had imposed the sanctions on two Chinese-based companies to highlight “the deceptive methods that the North Korean regime uses to circumvent international and U.S. sanctions, as well as the U.S. Government’s commitment to implement existing UN Security Council resolutions.”

Said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin in a statement Thursday, “Treasury will continue to enforce our sanctions, and we are making it explicitly clear that shipping companies employing deceptive tactics to mask illicit trade with North Korea expose themselves to great risk.”

It is okay with Trump if North Korea continues to smuggle goods with the help of China. Trump won't discuss the smuggling or why he did not tell Mnuchin until a day too late. Probably because Trump only heard on FOX News about what the Treasury Secretary was doing after it was done.

Trump built a nuke to kill Kim. Kim didn’t hear about it from Woodward. Kim heard from Popular Mechanics. The result is that the Kim/Trump disarmament talks in Hanoi failed Feb 27–28, 2019.

Popular Mechanics mistakenly assumed the nuke was for Russia. Anybody who knows Trump knows Putin is the least likely target for that nuke. Kim is the most likely.

North Korea probably won’t be happy with Bob Woodward’s explosive new book about the Trump presidency — and it could hurt the administration’s effort to convince North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

Woodward reports that Trump asked Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to come up with a plan to preemptively attack North Korea. That’s consistent with previous reporting indicating the administration considered a so-called “bloody nose” strike, meant to compel Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons.

Also, Woodward recounts an exchange between President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis. Trump calls for killing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “Let’s fucking kill him! Let’s go in. Let’s kill the fucking lot of them,” Trump told Mattis, referring to Assad and his forces.

Experts worry that these two revelations could hurt America’s nuclear negotiations with North Korea by convincing leader Kim Jong Un that Trump would be willing to order an assassination strike against him — which is a really strong reason for Kim to hold onto his nuclear bombs and missiles.

North Korea was going to stop making plutonium for atom bombs if and only if the "Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization" provided electricity. The Republican Congress under Bush would not pay the $billions negotiated by Bill Clinton to the "Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization", so North Korea kept on making more plutonium. That unwillingness to pay 15 years ago is why Trump is negotiating about atom bombs today. Republican Senators decided payment = "appeasement".

North Korea has executed five officials for their part in the failed second summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to a South Korean newspaper.

Citing the newspaper, Bloomberg News reported that Kim Hyok Chol, North Korea's special envoy to the U.S., was executed by firing squad in March for being "won over by the American imperialists to betray the supreme leader."

The paper also claimed that four other North Korean Foreign Ministry officials were executed that same month because of the breakdown of the February summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, but did not provide details.

Maybe Trump will execute National Security Advisor John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Would that be tragic? Not so much.

The cheapest way (fewest deaths and property destruction) to handle North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is to buy his loyalty. But Kim can't trust Trump to keep his word on anything, so there will be no deals with Trump. Kim knows that Trump already has "secret" plans to kill Kim:

Park Chung-hee, who was the dictator of South Korea, was assassinated. He was so crazy his regime made North Korea look soft. So crazy that his own security chief eventually assassinated him. It was the last of several assassination attempts on Park Chung Hee, one of which was caught on tape.

U.S. President Donald Trump proposed a weekend meeting with Kim Jong Un at the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea on Saturday.

“If Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!” Trump said, later telling reporters his offer was a spur-of-the-moment idea: “I just thought of it this morning.”

“If he’s there, we’ll see each other for two minutes, that’s all we can, but that will be fine,” he said, adding he and Kim “get along very well”.

Later, Trump told a news conference, “We may be meeting with Chairman Kim ... Kim Jong Un was very receptive.”

He added, “We won’t call it a summit. We’ll call it a handshake,” and said he would be very comfortable stepping over the border into North Korea if he met Kim at the DMZ.

“We’re working things out right now,” Trump said after his arrival in Seoul, when asked whether there will be a three-way meeting with Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Sunday. “We’re going to see.”

I happened to wake up at 2:30 am last night, turned on the tv, and WHOA! There's Trump at the DMZ, walking across the border into N. Korea with Kim at his side. Then they turned around and Kim walked into S. Korea. Surrounded by a sea of anxious security guards from 3 countries, and a jostling flock of crazed reporters and photographers, the "historic moment" was quite a spectacle. All that was missing was Elton John singing Candles In The Wind.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham roughed up by North Korean security guards

Stephanie Grisham replaced Sarah Sanders as White House press secretary only recently, but Grisham reportedly has already been injured on the job.

Grisham suffered bruises. It was not immediately clear if Grisham required medical attention or if anyone else was injured or detained by the guards.

Source called it “an all out brawl.”

I didn't realize anyone got hurt there, but I'm not at all surprised due to the raucous chaos I saw on tv. There was no guarantee that Kim would even show up, since Trump only asked him the day before. Definitely a lucky break for Trump that Kim came. I guess there were no afternoon executions on Kim's schedule.

Kim Jong Un's new nuclear-missile submarine reveals it's bound for a suicide mission

www.businessinsider.com/kim-jong-uns-new-nuclear-missile-submarine-bui
lt-suicide-mission-2019-7

Kim hasn't been pictured inspecting weapons capable of carrying nuclear warheads since the thaw in tensions between Washington and Pyongyang, but on Monday, it appears to have lost its patience with now stalled peace talks.

North Korea has long sought a submarine that can fire ballistic missiles but struggled to create one while under international sanctions. Ballistic-missile submarines give countries like the US and Russia an incomparable deterrent.

Even if an adversary state somehow found every single nuclear weapon North Korea possesses and destroyed them before a single shot could be fired in return, a submarine could lurk under the surface to deal a final retaliation blow.

North Korea has tested several missiles designed to fire from submarines.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Yanno, if I were president I'd do a few things differently.

1) I'd disavow our 'first strike' stance, by which we reserve for ourselves the use of nuclear missiles BEFORE anyone else has used them first. That's been our policy ever since we developed nuclear weapons, and it's beyond stupid. That policy has been the excuse many formerly non-nuclear nations have used to develop nuclear weapons of their own. I'm not naive enough to think abandoning the policy would lead any nation with nuclear ambitions - like NK - to give up their plans. But it doesn't change anything about our nuclear capabilities, and it removes handy cover from those countries.

2) I'd make it very clear that any nuclear strike on the US would risk the very existence of the attacking country. Now, this is contrary to international law, which requires proportionate response against military targets only. OTOH it's the very basis of M.A.D.

3) I'd completely disavow the neo-CON/ neo-'liberal' 'limited strike' fantasy.

4) When it comes to particular countries:
I'd work out a deal with Russia (the only other country to date capable of destroying the entire planet on its own) regarding first-strikes on our mutual allies. We will not tolerate them, nor will we deliver them. It would be foolish to set us on a path of complete planetary destruction over small territories. Nobody should enter that arena. But if someone does attack an ally, we WILL respond as if we were attacked.
I'd reenter the nuclear treaty with Iran.

5) I'd up our submarine detection capabilities so we know where all the subs are within striking range of the US, and can detect the different technologies of the different countries, so we know who they belong to.

6) I'd set up a dead-man system of retaliation.

‘No First Use’ and Nuclear Weapons
www.cfr.org/backgrounder/no-first-use-and-nuclear-weapons

The United States has considered but has never declared a No-First-Use (NFU) nuclear policy and remains the only country to have ever used nuclear weapons in war—twice against Japan, in 1945. The Trump administration’s 2018 Nuclear Posture Review expands the range of significant nonnuclear strategic scenarios in which the United States may contemplate nuclear weapons use. Notably, it does not rule out the first use of nuclear weapons in response to cyberattacks. The 2010 Nuclear Posture Review, under the administration of President Barack Obama, reiterated an assurance in place since 1978 that the United States would not use nuclear weapons against compliant members of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT). North Korea is not a compliant member.

Voting for neither Democrat nor Republican would place you in the same group as 7.5 billion humans in the world who also don't vote for either Democrat or Republican. Those 7.5 billion ineffectual people are either too young to vote or not registered to vote in the U.S.A. or didn't vote or voted for a third party. That 7.5 billion have got no vote on who will be President.

This is a test for Trump.

North Korea has just fired two unidentified projectiles — a provocative move that just so happens to come right as National Security Adviser (and longtime North Korea foe) John Bolton is visiting South Korea.

The launches, which took place early Thursday morning, Korean time, came from the city of Wonsan on North Korea’s east coast, according to South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff. The projectiles flew approximately 265 miles and splashed down in the Sea of Japan.

No other information is known at the moment. An unnamed defense official told CNN that the shot weapon was a short-range missile, but there’s no official confirmation of that yet.

Trump is letting Kim Jong Un do almost anything he wants:

Missile tests. Building provocative submarines. It’s all good.

In just the past week, North Korea has unveiled a brand new submarine that could potentially launch nuclear weapons and tested two short-range missiles that gravely threaten US allies South Korea and Japan.

The casual observer might understandably expect President Donald “fire and fury” Trump and his hawkish administration to respond forcefully to these new provocations. But the opposite has happened: They’re taking the barrage with a degree of calm virtually unseen before from this administration.

In fact, they’re actively downplaying — and in some cases even defending — North Korea’s actions.

For instance, on Thursday, Fox News’s Brett Baier asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about Kim showing off his shiny new (and potentially extremely deadly) submarine and whether that kind of thing makes it harder to reach a deal with North Korea.

Pompeo’s response was stunning: “I went to a defense facility,” he said flatly. “We all go look at our militaries, and we all take pictures of them.”

America’s top diplomat equating his own routine visits to US military sites with a North Korean dictator posing for propaganda photos meant to send threatening signals to Washington and its allies is . . . unusual, to say the least.

Hours later, Trump expressed similar sentiments, telling Fox News’s Sean Hannity that Kim’s missile tests didn’t worry him at all. “They haven’t done nuclear testing, they really haven’t tested missiles other than, you know, smaller ones, which is something that lots [of countries] test,” he said.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that the US Defense Intelligence Agency assesses that North Korea may have produced 12 nuclear weapons since Trump and Kim first shook hands in Singapore last year. That, added to the new potentially nuclear-launching submarine and further-tested missiles, means Kim has a greater arsenal at his disposal now than when his diplomacy with Trump started.

Trump on Friday played down North Korea’s latest launch of short-range ballistic missiles, calling them “very standard”. It is not standard. All ballistic missile tests by North Korea are banned by U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Trump is keen to hold up his engagement with North Korea as a foreign policy success ahead of his 2020 reelection bid.

Analysts said Trump appeared too desperate to get a deal, even at the expense of raising the risks posed to U.S. allies Japan and Korea, which are both within range of Kim’s short-range missiles, as are tens of thousands of U.S. troops based in North Asia.

It's astounding how the trolls here, i.e. sig kiki jsf rappy and others were wrong about everything. I mean everything. These are the assholes who get in line when Trump says, don't believe what you see but instead what I say.

Here's a prediction. These same trolls and Trump will blame everyone else when Trump is no longer in office for all their lies and failures. Those too will be lies.

North Korea Says U.S. Misleading Public Over Talks Progress

Trump didn't get his expected Nobel Peace Prize, so maybe it is time for him to once again threaten North Korea: 'Will Be Met With Fire And Fury'

Remember that video? Trump claimed that it forced Kim to negotiate. What face-to-face negotiations actually did was raise Kim to the same International status level as Trump, which was exactly what Kim wanted. They became equals!

I think Trump needs to return to the good old days of empty threats followed by empty personal negotiations with Kim. Maybe this time he and Kim will receive the Nobel Peace Prize that they covet. Trump probably would have the Prize carved on his tombstone, but Kim is not that shallow a seeker of fame because he is Supreme Leader for Life, while Trump is just momentarily passing through as President.

The day after Trump's Fire and Fury threat, Kim threatened to bomb Guam. Maybe Trump can goad Kim into actually bombing Guam before the next election?

Trump lied about Obama and North Korea

In June 2018, Trump made a case for diplomatic engagement with North Korea. He criticized former President Barack Obama for never speaking to dictator Kim Jong Un -- baselessly saying Obama was "essentially" ready to go to war without having tried talking.

"I did ask him: 'Have you spoken to him?' He goes, 'No,'" Trump said on Fox News. "I said, 'Do you think it would be a good thing to speak to him, maybe?'"

By June 2019, the complaint about Obama not talking to Kim had become a baseless tale about Obama unsuccessfully begging Kim for a meeting.

"President Obama wanted to meet, and Chairman Kim would not meet him. The Obama administration was begging for a meeting," Trump said at a news conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. "They were begging for meetings constantly. And Chairman Kim would not meet with him. And for some reason, we have a certain chemistry, or whatever."

During a highly dishonest Cabinet monologue on Monday, Trump returned to the structure of the original story about Obama not speaking to Kim -- except there was a new addition.

"I said, 'Did you ever call him?' 'No.' Actually, he tried 11 times," Trump said. "But the man on the other side -- the gentleman on the other side -- did not take his call. Okay? Lack of respect. But he takes my call."

In summary: Trump's story about Obama not talking to Kim morphed into Obama unsuccessfully begging Kim for a meeting, which morphed into Obama unsuccessfully trying to call Kim "11 times."

There is no evidence Obama ever sought a meeting with Kim or tried to call Kim even once.

"Obama never called Kim Jong Un. Obama never tried to meet Kim Jong Un. Trump is a serial liar and not well," Ben Rhodes, who served as deputy national security adviser to Obama, said on Twitter on Monday.
