USDA Scientist Quits, Claims Trump Administration Tried To Bury His Climate Study

A top climate scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture has resigned in protest of what he describes as the Trump administration’s efforts to censor and suppress climate science.

In a Politico article published Monday, Lewis Ziska, a plant physiologist with more than two decades of experience working for USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, said he decided to quit after department officials tried to bury a paper he wrote on how rice is losing nutrients because of rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

I wish these decent people would stop QUITTING. I know, hard, maybe even wrong for me to judge, but it sure seems like a lot of them just walk away.

Decent people won't waste the next 1.5 years to 5.5 years (if Trump is reelected) of their careers on Trump. In a PhD career that is only 45 years long (from 25 years old to 70 y.o.) you really can't afford to waste that many years of it on Trump, accomplishing nothing. Much better to find another position that will make use of your education.

In other words, much better to follow the money than to stand up for what you believe in.

Don't we only have like 12 months left to fix the climate before we doom ourselves? You would think that would lessen the worry about your long-term career if you actually believed that.

Just sayin'.

Trump does not believe in climate change. Those who do believe, and work for Trump, will be completely helpless, useless, purposeless as long as they work for him. The only reason to stay working for Trump would be for the money, if you believe in climate change, because your only accomplishment will be to earn a government paycheck and keep quiet, hoping that Trump doesn't notice you and fire you.

My point being, and I've always said this about anybody who claims they've quit because of something Trump did, is that these people are in positions where they can make a difference. By quitting their jobs and making a stink about it, they do nothing but make one single headline in a vast sea of thousands that are negative about Trump and are forgotten by 99.9% of the population by the same day next week.

Climate Change Threatens the World’s Food Supply, United Nations Warns

The world’s land and water resources are being exploited at “unprecedented rates,” a new United Nations report warns, which combined with climate change is putting dire pressure on the ability of humanity to feed itself.

The report, prepared by more than 100 experts from 52 countries and released in summary form in Geneva on Thursday, found that the window to address the threat is closing rapidly. A half-billion people already live in places turning into desert, and soil is being lost between 10 and 100 times faster than it is forming, according to the report

West Antarctica is melting—and it’s our fault

The towering glaciers of West Antarctica hold the fate of the world’s coasts in their flanks. Their collapse could send sea levels up by at least a foot by 2100—and potentially much more.

Now, a team has unraveled evidence of that human influence. In a study published Monday in Nature Geoscience, a team of scientists showed that over the past century, human-driven global warming has changed the character of the winds that blow over the ocean near some of the most fragile glaciers in West Antarctica. Sometimes, those winds have weakened or reversed, which in turn causes changes in the ocean water that laps up against the ice in a way that caused the glaciers to melt.

Trump is welcome to buy Greenland, the World's Largest Island, with his own money, not the U.S.A.'s money. Then he can pay back the loans by building hotels on his glaciers. But if the U.S. buys Greenland, how will it pay back the loan? Tax the people on Greenland? Tax the citizens of the 50 states? Sell ice to the World? Sell fish caught off the coast? How will Trump structure the repayment of the loan? What is Trump going to do with the 50,000 Inuits living there? Make them U.S. citizens? Deport them? That is why Trump is a moron. He doesn't make plans that make sense.

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow,

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

How is it that we’re talking about this? Really?

Look, this is pretty absurd. And according to Damian Paletta’s reporting for the Washington Post, Trump’s aides seem to think it’s absurd too.

But everything is relative.

This week, the president successfully lobbied Israel to prevent two Democratic members of Congress from entering Israel (though one, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, will apparently be visiting the country after all). He went on a Twitter rant against his own appointee to chair the Federal Reserve. And he moved to undermine the Endangered Species Act.

Exploring the possibility of buying Greenland in order to drill for oil is, by those standards, a sober act of statesmanship that suffers more from technical flaws due to the details of Danish constitutional law than anything else.

Greenland is a welfare state of 50,000 to 60,000 people that Denmark spends $500,000,000 per year supporting.

Unless they have a deep love for those people or they have something better to do with land they would never have the resources to drill, they could be talked out of it.

We could just pass the laws beforehand that they'd be citizens and give them all a big bonus check for joining up. 50k to 60k people is a drop in the bucket. We let at least that many illegals cross our border every week.

I hadn't heard that this was about oil. I had heard this was about warfare strategy against Russia. But, I'm sure it IS about oil. Everything is about oil.

Here's the Denmark Constitution. Show me the part where this is a problem.

https://www.constituteproject.org/constitution/Denmark_1953

I didn't read through the whole thing because I have shit to do today, but I did gloss over enough to know that the Evangelical Lutheran Church and State are not separated, and the King doesn't have to answer for any of his actions because "his person shall be sacrosanct".

Honestly, if it weren't for some man-made references such as the Lutheran church part, their constitution sounds like something that came out of a Tolkien novel.

Denmark would have to rewrite their Constitution to delete Greenland. Trump is willing to rewrite the US Constitution, but I don't think your average Dane is willing to do that to their Constitution, especially based only on Trump's word. He might change his mind about the deal and then the Danes would have to rewrite their Constitution a second time to put Greenland back where it was:

The Folketing shall consist of one assembly of not more than one hundred and seventy-nine Members, of whom two Members shall be elected on the Faeroe Islands, and two Members in Greenland.

Special rules for the representation of Greenland in the Folketing may be laid down by Statute.

Special rules may be provided by Statute for the commencement and determination of Faeroe Islands and Greenland representation in the Folketing.

Rules for Referenda, including the extent to which Referenda shall be held on the Faeroe Islands and in Greenland, shall be laid down by Statute.

Any person who is taken into custody shall be brought before a judge within twenty-four hours. Where the person taken into custody cannot be released immediately, the judge shall decide, stating the grounds in an order to be given as soon as possible and at the latest within three days, whether the person taken into custody shall be committed to prison, and in cases where he can be released on bail, the judge shall determine the nature and amount of such bail. This provision may be departed from by Statute as far as Greenland is concerned, if for local considerations such departure may be deemed necessary.

The age qualification for local government electors and congregational council electors shall be that applying at any time to Folketing electors. With reference to the Faeroe Islands and Greenland the age qualification for local government electors and congregational council electors shall be such as may be provided for by Statute or fixed in accordance with Statute.

The Folketing and the Realm. lol

I wish somebody would re-write Tolkien and make it an enjoyable read. Almost as bad as trying to read HP Lovecraft.

But no, they wouldn't have to re-write that flowery piece of antiquity. That's what amendments are for. Then when Trump changes his mind they can write another one nullifying that first one and it will look like the prohibition scars on our own constitution.

And at the end of the day, the King can do whatever he damn well pleases. Half of that document makes a point of letting that be known.

Trump wants to buy Greenland. Roughly 80% of the surface of Greenland is ice. Greenland’s melting ice could raise seas by 20 feet. So, Trump wants to spend good money on something that isn't going to be there in 50 years.

The King can do whatever he damn well pleases? You are thinking of Trump. In Denmark, the Constitutional Act is changed always with the consent of Danish citizens. It is not King or 3/4th of the state legislatures doing the changing. And Danish citizens have a very low opinion of Trump. About 99% think he is crazy. The rest? That he is fat. They will not change their Constitution for him.

I'm just going by what the actual words in the Constitution of Denmark say themselves. Not by however wikipedia interprets it.

You don't have to go very far to paraphrase the line in part III: "13. The King shall not be answerable for his actions; his person shall be sacrosanct."

Quote:

Definition of Sacrosanct: (especially of a principle, place, or routine) regarded as too important or valuable to be interfered with.

So yes, as the Constitution was drafted and currently reads, the King can do whatever the fuck he pleases and is answerable to no one.

I checked. The King of Denmark came very close to getting his ass booted out of the Palace in 1920. Since then, the Monarchs have kept their mouths shut for fear of the Parliament getting rid of them.

Sounds to me then that the Danish Constitution is nothing more than a piece of toilet paper anyhow and is in desperate need of a complete overhaul to be up with the times. It also sounds to me like it was severely outdated when it was written up in 1953 if none of that stuff about the King was legitimate over 30 years before it was written and almost the whole goddamned thing is about what the King can do.

Frederiksen said conversations around the US buying Greenland were "an absurd discussion. (Greenland's Premier) Kim Kielsen has of course made it clear that Greenland is not for sale. That's where the conversation ends."

That's not a retort.

That's quoting my post and then quoting a news story. Quoting my post was unnecessary since you abandoned our discussion.

Trump's environmental policies could lead to more premature deaths

According to the EPA's own analysis, the Trump administration's Affordable Clean Energy rule will result in up to 1,400 more premature deaths a year by 2030. Learn more about the impacts of Trump's deregulation campaign on the CNN Special Report "A Toxic Tale: Trump's Environmental Impact,"

1,400 by 2030?

480,000 people die willingly from smoking cigarettes every year. By 2030, over 5,000,000 people will have died in the US from cigarette smoking.

I'm sure you can do better than that.

And by the way, your article says "could lead", not "will lead".

Lying is not paraphrasing. Read a book.

We've killed off more than 50% of forest animals on Earth, a new report found — even more evidence of a 6th mass extinction

Earth's forests are emptying.

Half of their inhabitants have disappeared in the last 40 years, according to a new report from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The report tracked populations of 268 species of forest-dwelling birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles worldwide between 1970 and 2014 (the most recent year for which data is available). The results showed that forest animal populations have declined by 53% worldwide, and humans are to blame.

More than 80% of all terrestrial animal, plant, and insect species call forests home. However, a combination of habitat destruction, hunting, the spread of invasive species, climate change, and disease are killing off forest animals, the researchers said.

Invited himself?

Do you hear the words coming out of your mouth?

If you want to go to Denmark, assuming you have a passport, you can get your happy ass on a plane and be there in a few hours. You don't need an invite.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Is this like how Obama tried to bury the estimates of the gulf blowout? or the studies on how toxic the dispersants were? or how about how Obama prosecuting more whistle-blowers than double those under all previous presidents combined? or how about spying on everyone?

You mean THAT Obama, the bringer of sunlight and transparency?

When you stop being partisan hacks and start criticizing both sides, I'll stop pointing out what hypocrites you are.

He's such a whiny little 5 year old - one of the most embarrassing people we've ever had represent this country, let alone our president.

Trump doesn't think he's 'ever even heard of a Category five' hurricane. Four have threatened the US since he took office

President Donald Trump said Sunday that he's "not sure that (he's) ever even heard of a Category 5" hurricane, despite four such storms having threatened the US since he took office.
