California Governor Jerry Brown last week signed one of the toughest data privacy laws in the nation. The new law, California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, has been compared to the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and goes into effect in 2020.

The phrase "Do as I say, not as I do" comes to mind, considering most of the American companies doing what the law prohibits are based in California.

I'm woke, brah. All I'm saying is that Zuckerberg isn't going to lose any sleep about not being able to spy on and sell the data of people in California when he's got 49 other states and most of the rest of the world to work with.

I love those weird photos...

I never knew there was an actual news cast of this one. I'd only seen it a couple of times on compilation vids of strange photographs over the years.

Of course, being hooked up with the local farmers is nice, since I am unlikely to ever want for coffee, tobacco or potatoes - and there's chicory but I dunno about caffiene content there.

Conversely they're unlikely to have non-functional equipment so long as I can find, build or modify parts.

I worry bout the cities, mostly - Detroit is progressing right along with secondary agri-enviro infrastructure, but they ain't there quite yet.

"important," dire, world-impact & the like. Controversial -- nah. Just stuff that was fun, weird, unusual, good ...
heart-warming is ok, new news ... Sharable news bits & articles that are worth a comment or two.

When I last spoke with him, he said he noticed most people were not posting anymore. He said he would try to do so. I don't think he ever posted again at that point. Shit, I think he was a he? Funny how that works.

Maybe since nobody online, here or likely just about anywhere anywhere else, was giving him what he was looking for, he decided that he didn't have enough time left in his life to spend any more of it wastefully online.

... or she. I don't really know either.

You've been dwelling on this one a couple of days now, buddy. I think it's better if you just say your goodbyes and assume the best.

Hi, THG,

Thanks for being in touch.

I'll be 77 in Nov., & I've had an unpredictable heart
condition since about age 40. And yet, I'm able to keep on
keeping on. ... maybe it's the same thing my Grandma Schooley
had ... was "feeble," as they called it then, most of her
adult life. Yet she had 4 strong children, 3 girls & a boy.
When feeble, train your kids to take care of things.
I wasn't such a good kid, tho ... I preferred to be out
in the fields catching snakes & other small wildlife.
I was about 40 when I realized I wanted to be more responsible.

I see Browncoats isn't near as active as it was. That's too
bad, 'cause Haken made it a good place for people who mainly
want to share honestly.

I'll try to stop by more regular.

So how's everything with you?

Oonjerah

Since Jack posted he probably left because he grew tired of wasting time posting online/Firefly, and because he/she is more than likely deceased, I've decided to post my last contact with Oonjerah. I did respond but silence followed. I find it very sad to have lost such a person, such a Browncoat.

Abandoned yatch story above: I'll guess pirates.

wikipedia
"Marie Curie, the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize in 1903 (physics), went on
to become a double Nobel Prize recipient in 1911 (chemistry)"

"An ancient Egyptian, Merit-Ptah (c.?2700 BC), described in an inscription as 'chief
physician', is the earliest known female scientist named in the history of science."

When I started Coffee - Cheers thread, I think I wanted it to be about fun stuff,
oddball stuff, true stuff we don't often talk about. Maybe ... I drink more tea than
coffee & more water than tea ... but "Water - Cheers!" doesn't have a ring to it.

... oooOO}{OOooo ...

I've given up looking for the meaning of life. Now all I want is a cookie.

He was responding to my post. I'm just trying to keep his thread alive for a bit.

Yes and it would have come to Russia from Turkey. The Ottaman empire. Brought back by envoys sent from Russia. They would have drank it there and thought this is something the Czarina would trade for once sampled.

ETA: Did a bit of research coffee was brought to Europe by Venetian traders, and the Ottamans got it from them.
