Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

They've been doing them for a long time, but this year it seems excessive.

And I can't help but wonder who they're aimed at ...

Who, in the real world, would be receptive to the idea of committing 40-60K of the family's finances on a new car (or two! in some commercials) without at least discussing that kind of purchase with their significant other?

LOOK honey! I got us into hock for years! Without even asking if you'd be OK with it!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

lol

One of those cars cost more than all 7 cars I've owned in my life, and 60 to 90% of what I paid for my house.

And that's before you include all the interest.

Almost as dumb as a big dumb wedding.

A lot of married people have "his" and "her" accounts, "his" and "her" credit cards and "his" and "her" expenses.

I knew a few couples like that: He paid the rent while she paid the utilities, or she paid the mortgage while he paid for the kids' educations. They had "his", "her" and "our" accounts and - btw- all of those marriages failed in the time that I knew them.

But, yeah ... if someone paid for a gift car without consulting me, even out of "their" own money, I think I'd make them take it back PDQ (hopefully it's within the 3-day cooling off period) and have a long, serious discussion about financial reliability, because putting a big red bow on a giant mistake doesn't make it better!

BTW- car sales have been very poor over the past 5 years despite the car companies making loans to ppl with unverified incomes. Must be why the commercials.

America loves a winner!

I especially like the one with a couple who appear to be in their mid-30s or early 40’s, at most, & live in this ultra modern house walk out and there are two brand new cars and, the girl chooses the truck, which of course was the guys, as she says she loves the color. That has to be over 100 grand in brand new cars sitting in the driveway.

Surprise!

Incredible that in 2020 so many people still don't get advertising. It does appear that at least on this board... it's the same people who slurp their lord Trump, so... I guess it does make sense.

What's not to get about advertising?

Especially with the big ticket items like this, it's all about trying to make you feel like you're not good enough or you should have something to be ashamed of if you don't have the newest car on the market with all the bells and whistles. It gets even worse if you have kids because they make you feel like you're a bad parent if you don't buy the one that gets five star ratings for safety.

Almost everybody falls for this mentality at some point in their life.

I used to own a couple of pairs of jeans in high school that were $150 in 90's cash. Once I had my first good job when I was 19-20, I had a closet full of DKNY stuff.

Today I have 15 pairs of jeans in various states of wear that all looked brand new when I bought them and cost me less than one pair of those Hilfiger's that I had in High School.

At the end of the day, it's on an individual to decide if they want to be a slave to credit card interest for the rest of their lives or not. Some people really don't have a choice, but even in the economy of the last 20 years most people still do.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Exactly. It's designed to make people "want" shit they don't need and probably can't afford. It confuses "wants" with "needs" so people will buy shit on the insinuation that this shit will buy them a "lifestyle" and that this "lifestyle" will make them "happy". Its core message is that individual happiness is an entitled state (burying the fact that life inevitably involves pain, fear, frustration, anger, failure, and self-doubt) and can be achieved by being a "consumer" instead of being a producer, a problem-solver, a family-member, and social/ spiritual being.

Best explanation I ever saw of the origins (all the way back to Freud's nephew Bernays, who was a sociopath if there ever was one) and methods of advertising was the Century of Self.

I know I posted this a couple of times already. You might want to watch it.

Merry Christmas! Go buy that car for your loved one!

Oh, I completely get advertising! I just don't understand how stupid the advertisers think people are. Those commercials have got to be among the dumbest, most insulting around. So who exactly is the target audience that will give the spiel any credit?

BTW, if car sales improve, I guarantee it's not 'because' of those Christmas ads. It's either because of the sales / rebates / deals that are being offered, or because the pattern lately is to put off buying big ticket necessities until Christmas, and make a necessity purchase a virtue, (we needed a washing machine BUT HEY Merry Christmas!), or both.

Like I said, you 3 have no clue. You suffer from thinking you're smart about things you have zero real world experience with. That's a hallmark of ignorance, which is a hallmark of every Trump lover - so congrats on that!

These ads are not targeted at Jack or Kookie - Jack couldn't even afford one of the tires and Kookie is stingy and joyless and probably wouldn't pay more than $5k for any vehicle, so they don't give a shit about you 2 - you don't even exist to them. You interpreting ads like you are offended or have figured out advertising, ads that are designed for other people, is a real treat.
SIGGY and SIGHUB could probably buy a couple of these cars. She's always bragging about paying for help around the house (who does that other than really rich people?). They are probably a lot like these rich fuks in the ads. But she has to try and play the common man (badly) for the forum cred - so as usual you can't trust her comments. Transparent she is.

so, are you saying that these ads are only targeting really rich folks? Like ... top 5%? 2%? 1%?

Why run a mass media campaign to target a portion of the population that probably doesn't watch those shows anyway? Wouldn't they be better off placing their ads in more selective media?

Everything you say here is null and void because of credit. It's the life blood of the auto industry.

In the case of the guy who paid $4,000 interest on a four year loan on a car that was $27,000, he also lost $5,000 the second he drove that car off the lot. That's $9,000 up in smoke immediately after purchase.

That's a stupid person. And that's most Americans.

There is a reason I've maintained and even grown my credit score to over 820 despite the fact that I haven't even made $100k in the last 10 years.

They certainly aren't advertising to people like me, but it's because I'm not a stupid impulse buyer, and because I see maybe a dozen advertisements in an entire year.

Yet another perfect example of your ignorance. When I said they don't care about you I mean they really don't care about you. You can try and make your financial situation sound as sunny and thoughtful as you want - and they still won't give a sh*t how smart you think YOU are. You even agreed: "They certainly aren't advertising to people like me" and it's not because you aren't an impulse buyer. Even if you were an impulse buyer you don't have the financial means.

Speaking of stupid - how about the stupid sh*t you post: "That's a stupid person. And that's most Americans." If you can buy a $120k Porsche - actually afford it - I say go for it. It's not for you? No sh*t - I think we all get that by now.

I do have the financial means. I could buy a $100,000 car on my credit cards today if I wanted to. It would end up costing me about $350,000 after interest though, assuming I ever was actually able to pay it off.

But when it comes to your average car, all I would need to do to get a legit loan and buy a new one is get a $30,000/year job. I have no mortgage or any other regular bills outside of basic utilities and an almost non-existant property tax bill. But I'd still never buy a new car.

Stupid people buy new cars.

Stupid people are manipulated by ads on TV.

And there must be a lot of stupid people, or there wouldn't be so much money dumped into advertising.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Depends on the car, depends on how long they drive it, depends on their financials. Stupid for you isn't isn't stupid for everyone - sorry, you're getting dangerously close to PIGGY wanting to tell everyone else how to live. That's deeply unAmerican.

"Stupid people are manipulated by ads on TV." - Jack
I'll give you that one. You guys aren't even the target of the ads and you're talking about them! Must be working! Spread the word - next time let us know what the make and models are.

Well, counting interest that becomes (roughly) a 60-74K hole in the family budget. (average interest is 4+% over five years)

You think people SHOULD pay attention to these ads? You might want to talk to SECOND, he believes that Americans are innumerate. Are you trying to prove him right? You seem to WANT people to engage in finacial irresponsibility.

So, idiot troll, you've done everything but answer the question. Who IS the target audience?

This is for the Toyota 4Runner alone (not counting all the other pickup and SUV models Toyota sells). Toyota sold almost 140,000 4Runners in the US in 2018 at around $40k msrp. Do you think the ad is for the top 1% in the US, or do you think Toyota is counting on mass-market sales?

These commercials are for GMC pickups, with an msrp of somewhat over $50k. In 2018 GMC sold over 150K Sierras alone (not counting other pickup truck models). If GMC is counting on selling at least that many per year, are their ads targeted to the top 1% in the US?.

Signym, 1kiki, & 6ix, do you think a worried husband and wife discussing their money problems on a car commercial will sell cars? Buy the car and worry about how to pay later, much later. The dealer will help you pay because they are so very nice! Car dealers make money by financing the cars they sell. Dealers can easily make a profit of $3,000 just through the financing alone. If you have a trade-in, a dealer can make another $2,000 (easy) on that. They simply low-ball your trade-in, then turn around and sell it for a nice profit. Commercials are fantasy, NOT about money, because if you stop thinking fantasy and start thinking money, you won't buy.

Jezus Christus, OF COURSE it doesn't! That's why advertising (as practiced today) is a con.

SIGNY: Exactly. It's designed to make people "want" shit they don't need and probably can't afford.

It's a mind-screw, lies designed to part people from their money!

SLOPPY: you spit venom every time you think about Republicans "fooling" people with lies, and then you get pissed off when people get fooled. Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Well, here's my guess for target audience and why those commercials ... for Christmas, no less.

Despite no-check easy-credit fraudulent loans, mass-market new-car sales are flagging. Hmmmm ... what's a good excuse to run some more specials, sales, promos, and pump some life into sales ... well Christmas is around the corner! And trucks and SUVs seem to be popular, plus we bet our assembly lines on them, so let's do trucks and SUVs! For Christmas!

So that's the why, when, and what.

And older people ... despite generally being the demographic where more have available money, aren't easily swayed by commercials. So, let's target the young and dumb! Like we always do! And by god, they've been so propagandized by 'smart' phones and 'social' media into thinking that a great life is a sequence of perfect consumerist selfie-capable moments, let's create a story of how they want to think of themselves and their 'lifestyle': (white), young, hip, rich, and attached - in a series of perfect selfie-capable moments with a SURPRISE!!! Merry Christmas budget blower truck-purchase! in NOWHERE USA because it doesn't exist!

That's the who, how, and where.

It's really that simple.

Our self-proclaimed 'expert' just couldn't admit it.

It's really that simple.

Our self-proclaimed 'expert' just couldn't admit it.

You made it too complicated by looking at the microlevel of the individual being swayed by advertisement. Look at the entire economy. Monthly vehicle sales are doing what they always do, like the EKG for a heart that irregularly beats 4 to 6 times per year. Take note that during recessions the heart does not beat strongly, but ads can't cancel out a recession.
If you go to https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=pNjK you will see that January is the slowest sales month of any year.

Yep, they have to keep flogging new car sales with more and more specials deals, ever more enticing loans with lower and lower lending standards while people rack up more an more debt ... to make December a peak sales month and flog those old model years off the floor. That's how it's done!

You mentioned ads, specials, loans, but there is another technique to get buyers: clear coat paint job to make the cars SHINY! as Kaylee would say. Shiny sells cars as much as ads do. You wax the car to keep it shiny! but eventually the finish dulls and it is time to buy a SHINY! new car, as the manufacturers intended you do, even though the surface finish is the least important thing about the car, especially compared to, for examples, its crash test rating, reliability and repair cost, none of which do most car companies mention in their ads.

I never made any distinction between partisans on either side when I said that stupid people fall for advertising. A politician is a product just as much as Tide detergent (which is obscenely priced compared to the no-ad competitors that do the job just as well) or an insanely priced new car (which is the worst investment that most Americans make).

Auto Lenders Have Verified Income On Just 7% Of All Loans Since 2017

It's no longer good enough for customers to be buying cars with debt only. Now, while the auto industry struggles to pull itself out of the recession it is mired in, some dealerships around the country are "dressing up" loan applications with fake incomes, according to consumer lawyers. Additionally, some large lenders have cut back on safeguards that could catch the fraudulent applications.

The amount of false applications is "hard to quantify" according to PointPredictive, which sells software to detect loan fraud. The company estimates that more than 20% of loans have inflated incomes.

Of course, dealers have the option to ask for documentation to prove income, but over the past few years some subprime lenders have stopped checking them - partly in response to dealers demanding faster decisions. In fact, lenders verified income on only about 7% of all loans since 2017, the Journal found.
