Fox Is ‘Wide Open’ to ‘Firefly’ Revival – ‘If There’s a Way to Reinvent It for Today’
TCA 2020: Fox’s entertainment president Michael Thorn and “Firefly” EP Tim Minear tell TheWrap what could make it work
Jennifer Maas | January 7, 2020 @ 5:30 PM
Last Updated: January 7, 2020 @ 10:05 PM

“Firefly” executive producer Tim Minear recently reawakened fans’ demand for a revival (or maybe just made their cries louder than they already were) when he tweeted out a picture from the final day of shooting on Joss Whedon’s short-lived, cult-classic Fox series. And then Whedon added fuel to their fire by retweeting this.

Since Minear started this whole thing, TheWrap asked both him and Fox’s president of entertainment, Michael Thorn, what it would take to revive the Nathan Fillion-led space western at the Television Critics Association press tour Tuesday.

“The macro answer is, any time we look at one of our classic titles, if there’s a way to reinvent it for today so it’s as resonant now as the original was, and is, to the fans, we’re wide open,” Thorn said. “I loved ‘Firefly,’ personally, and I watched every episode. I didn’t work on it, but I loved the show. It had come up before, but we had ‘The Orville’ on the air and it didn’t make sense for us to have, as a broadcast network who is very targeted, to have two space franchises on our air.”

And while “Orville” has since moved to Hulu, freeing up that “space franchise” territory, Thorn points out that Minear is already “very busy” at Fox right now, showrunning both “9-1-1” and its upcoming spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star.”

“But it’s a good idea,” the Fox exec said.

The 20th Century Fox Television-produced “Firefly” premiered on Fox in September 2002 and was canceled after eleven of the first season’s fourteen produced episodes were aired. But since then, the show has amassed a very serious fanbase. Along with Fillion, the show starred Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau and Ron Glass.

“In this crowded marketplace, if you can start with some kind of brand awareness and IP that has a vocal support and, in this case, a crazy, passionate love for it, you’re ahead of the game,” Thorn said.

As for Minear, he says he and Whedon have been talking about a revival at different points over the past decade.

“Joss did sort of revive it by making ‘Serenity,'” Minear said, referring to the 2005 film that acted as a big-screen series finale for the show. “But we have talked about different permutations and how that might work. Do you take two of the characters and put them in a different place and sort of retell a new story with two old characters, with new characters?”

“You’re not gonna get everybody back — unless you did something like a limited series, like they did for ‘The X-Files.’ Then maybe you could get these people to come back. ‘Cause Nathan is a little busy doing ‘The Rookie.’ But I also know, ’cause I just texted a little bit with Nathan over the weekend, when I posted those pictures from ‘Firefly’ and he got very sentimental. Everyone who worked on that show dearly loves it and they all still talk to each other. I still see Alan occasionally.”

Basically, Minear thinks the only way “Firefly” could be revived is in a limited series format.

“I would love to see, like, an eight- or 10-episode limited adventure in that universe.”

Could be nothing - don't care. Even just a chance is great news imho.

With Ron gone and the cast almost 20 years older they may have to try a reboot with a new cast, hate to say that. Since it's been almost 20 years the Captain would likely be rancher by now and Serenity would be a barn, and I wonder if Morena would like to return as a 40 year old Space Hooker? Would Simon and Kaylee be married and running a Med clinic/Garage? Would Zoe be the governor of a planet? Would Jane be in jail? And then there's River...I can't even guess. It would be strange in the beginning but we may warn to a new cast...or not.

A new cast just wouldn't work. Like when Duchovny took a hiatus from XFiles. You would have to progress the story by, say, ten years. And I would really miss Ron Glass, he was a consumate actor. Just watch him in the old Barney Miller series, he inhabited that character as much as he inhabited Book.

I think it could be made to work. You have to not only progress the characters, yours have to progress their universe. Maybe parts of the Alliance break free after learning about Miranda. Not a writer but I can imagine a lot of possibilities.

I have faith in Minnear and Whedon. If anyone can make it work, they can.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath.

I will say that I've seen quite a few FF shirts and hats in my little "miserable" neck of the woods the last few years. I mean, 15 years later still wearing the merch?

WE don't even do that anymore.

It's been so long I think I would be open for a re-hash. What the hell, can't be worse than half the crap out there...

I am pretty sure Joss is all done with Firefly. He doesn't take any interest in where the comic books are going. Instead he is working on some TV that comes out in 2021: The Nevers -- An epic tale following a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world. (That sounds vaguely Firefly. Or Buffy. Or Agents of SHIELD. Or everything he worked on, except for Roseanne.)

How do you make up to a guy you will NEVER meet? You don't. Would I watch something that Joss Whedon or J.J. Abrams got paid to make? Maybe, if it was interesting. But I would turn it off or walk away instantly if it wasn't. Nobody here has a "relationship" with Whedon, Abrams, or even Trump. These guys are not our grandchildren and we don't have to watch whatever show they put on, like we have to with our grandchildren -- whatever the kids do is the greatest show, mostly because they are blood relatives. Whedon, Abrams, and Trump aren't relatives and will be harshly/brutally judged if their work stinks.

Same. They have a job to do: entertain me/us. Their creative decisions are there's to make just like my criticism of those decisions are mine. It's definitely not personal. I learned very early on when I was a PA on a very small film (had a SteadyCam though! I was drooling), that it's incredibly hard even to make a sh*t movie and most of us don't have the stones or wherewithal to even try. Thing is we all could try, but we don't. We actively, freely choose not to. And budget or tech is no longer an excuse - an iphone 5 makes a perfectly good HD camera. So getting too critical or personally aggrieved seems really petty.

Personally - not that sentimental about the cast even though I love what they did and wish them nothing but success. They have other challenges to take on. A cameo - sure, one or 2 just as a nod, but any more and it's embarrassing fanboy/girl wank - that's what fanfic is for. The original actors were mostly unknowns, time to find the next unknowns and the next stories for the 'Verse. Plenty of smart, creative people out there looking for a chance.

I agree with that.

I never had any delusions that anyone was a saint. I don't care who Joss slept with as long as it was consensual. I'm glad his ex spoke up, it sounded like he needed to be knocked down a peg.

I think what made the original Firefly work was the original inspiration, which - IIRC - was that Whedon had read a biography about a Civil Wa soldier (rebel, as I recall) and what he did AFTER the war. How hard life was, back then. He translated the story to a similar future, making the rebels the non-slave-owning faction, and modeling The Alliance on the USA. He managed to avoid a lot of cliches and tropes, and made his main characters morally ambiguous in a morally ambiguous world: The Alliance, it had its good points (high culture, technological advancement) as well as its ethical lapses. The ex-rebels weren't pure either, and most of the people they were dealing with were pretty cutthroat. That's why the show had such broad appeal: everyone (from unrepentant southerners to urban liberals to libertarians to white males to black females to soldiers) thought the show was talking about them; it didn't disrespect a core part of their identity. That, and, well, an inventive story and good acting.

It was a disappointment when he shortcut a lot of those questions and reached for some tired "woke" tropes in Serenity ... the supernatural-ninja-warrior-princess for example ... the easy explanation for reavers .... and the thing that grated on me was his reliance on the idea that if we just "TELL THE PEOPLE!" what happened on Miranda they will rise up and throw off the yoke of the oppressor.

REALLY??

You wouldn't know it, even by fans pf the show! And even when you DO tell people (There was a huge discussion about this during GWB's tenure, and Whedon explicitly said that The Alliance was based on the USA) they prefer to live in comfortable ignorance. So much for Mr Universe!

Anyway, I would love to see a return of the show with the same complexity and ambiguity as the original, because that's like real life and that's what made their 'verse seem whole.

You do NOT recall correctly:

He first conceived of the series when he wasn't supposed to be thinking about television at all, during a nonworking trip to London with Kai. Joss had brought along Michael Shaara's Pulitzer Prize–winning historical novel The Killer Angels, which told the story of the soldiers in the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. What drew him in was how Shaara recounted the minutiae of the soldiers' lives; it made him think about how everyday people got by in an age when their needs weren't prepackaged and instantly available.

Under his deal with 20th Century Fox, Joss needed to deliver them a new series. He suddenly knew that this was the idea that he wanted to explore. "I wanted to play with that classic notion of the frontier," Joss said. "Not the people who made history, but the people history stepped on—the people for whom every act is the creation of civilization." And he wanted to do it on a spaceship.

Yes, he read about a Civil War soldier and what struck him was how HARD life was. And yes, he modeled The Alliance on the USA. He said so himself.

And as I said before, he managed to avoid a lot of tired, worn out tropes. There were no poor but happy and wise ... the poor were mostly downtrodden and beaten. There were no heroes, people were just trying to survive, and when someone acted on the side of right, it was mostly a surprise.

Mal's home planet may have been a model of the good simple life- hardworking people enjoying the fruits of their labor under a small government, and Mal may have been a hero once, but that was crushed by The Alliance and all in the past, and Mal - and everyone- had to learn to live in a different ' verse. Whedon and Minnear explored good and bad a lot in the series, exploitation and how it distorts people (both the exploited and the exploited). There were some truly evil people, but nobody was purely good.

In this future, the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance ...

Indeed, Whedon DID partially base the Alliance on the US. Why anyone would BELIEVE differently without looking it up is a function of their own stupidity.

Fair enough, to everyone involved here...

I went back over the "Joss Whedon Is a ‘Hypocrite Preaching Feminist Ideals,’ Ex-Wife Kai Cole Says (Guest Blog)", and I have to say that even the rather unhinged individuals here seemed to be fairly reasonable about the Joss situation at that time.

Can't say for sure that none of them weren't involved in shutting down the Whedonesque site while they were busy here bitching about Trump 24/7, but nothing I read in that thread seems to suggest that they were in favor of "cancelling" Joss.

And make no mistake, there were a lot of fat pink haired twitter harpies out there trying to cancel Joss.
