Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Not to be crass about it, but fatal scuba accidents happen all the time. Just in my little corner of the world the sheriff's department used to give us several tanks to test every year to check for oxygen levels, carbon monoxide, and potential toxic gasses after scuba deaths. They knew how frequent that kind of thing is, we knew how frequent that kind of thing is, and CNN knows how frequent that kind of thing is too. So ... with really important stuff going on the world completely unreported - what makes this national news?

I just wonder how these editorial decisions get made, as to what we're supposed to pay attention, to, and what we're not.
