I dont think most so-called 'conservative' voterz can ever chanje their mindz.

Find the vilest serial child molester/killer in solitary confinement to protect him from the other prizonerz, feed him grimy month old chili frum a run down helth department condemd diner and collect hiz poop for a week, mix that with an equal portion uv glowing glop out uv a rusting barrel found in the back uv a clozed down kemical factory, form it into a vagely human shape with a smiling fase, slap a MAGA hat and a GoP pin on it and you hav your next candidate for Prezident!
(the video iz a Kris Hayes hilites from Feb 9)

The evidens makes that a compelling conclusion, but this iz wun uv thoze counterintuitiv situationz that boggle the mind, like quantum mekanics.

My own theory iz that gullibility iz a competely seperate mental attribute from IQ.

Several uv my frendz are not complete idiots, yet still vote Republican. Wun even fell for Glen Beck's schtick! I think he even payz to subscribe to Blaze TV!

My brother, hoo alwayz scored hire on IQ tests than me wen we were kidz iz constantly sending me vidz from rite wing propagandists like Ben Shapiro, Steve Crowder, etc.

Duznt matter how many timez I proov he'z being lied to.

Fuck Democrats and their identity politics. They're all racists and sexists. Fuck their censorious nature. Fuck their constant clutching of pearls.

I used to lean far to the left.

Don't ask me what it would take. Ask your own party why they're so abhorrent now to so many people that the ones who wouldn't have voted Republican if their life depended on it in the early to mid 2000s gladly do so today.

Simple: A better Democrat candidate.

I'm a lifelong registered Democrat, and I only voted "not Democrat" for Bill's second term, Obama's second term, and Hillary's first.

If the Dem party can manage to put up someone who isn't gawdawful, that would do it for me.

I hav a litl nitpik about sumthing Chris Hayes sed.

"Trump duznt beleev in democrasy. And increasingly niether duz the Republican party."

Get rid uv 'increasingly'.

The GoPs hav not beleevd in democrasy for decadez. They do everything they can to hinder it, undermine it or bypass it. Haf the lejislation they rite iz intended to tilt the vote their way. After loozing an election they do absolutely everything they can think uv to legally overturn it and then go into overdrive on lejislating for the next time.

Sins the last election there hav been 253 new law and amendment efforts across the country by GoPs!

You need some reality mixed in with your opinion, JO.

It was OBAMA that conducted widespread illegal surveillance, and the DNC that torpedoed Bernie, and it will be BIDEN* that will make dissenting opinions illegal and who will censor free speech.

I find both parties at fault, and it you got your head outta your basement once in a while, so would you.

I'm not a Republican.

Republicans don't actively hate me though.

I'm temporarily allied with them until the Democrats come to their senses.

I hope that happens sooner than later, because I can smell the stink of the Republicans on this side of the fence.

I hate Democrats for pushing me to the right.

JO, how can I give up a "charade" that I'm not engaging in? And why is it so hard to understand that I'm AMERICAN?

Besides, what time am I wasting? I'm giving you my honest opinion. I post about my real life. The only person who is wasting time is YOU, because you keep grinding your mental gears on a delusion, looking for "tricks" that aren't there.

Set it aside. Stop trying to impose your delusion on my posts, and instead of trying to "figure out how I'm trying to trick you", just assume that I'm posting honestly and directly, and answer the same way.

Things will go a lot more smoothly if you just stick to facts and logic when discussing issues and stop the mental and emotional somersaulting on your part.

But thanks for reminding REAVERBOT that anger isn't useful.

I've actually got some fairly solid proof right now that none of the regular posters here are from Russia.

Unfortunately, I'd have to doxx everybody to prove it to everyone here though.

But no... Kiki and Sigs are not posting from Russia. California, just like they said. Not via a VPN either.

And Second IS really from Texas... Also, not via VPN.

Hope my post doesn't creep you out, Sigs.

Have no fear. I'm not going to dox you or Kiki or anybody else. I just figured that it was time to start gathering some data on the particularly bad actors here in the RWED, and I can't pick and choose what data I'm collecting.

I just thought it was quite entertaining to discover real proof that you both were from California and that we don't have Russians posting here.

I'll admit that it's also just a little comforting too. Not that I ever doubted it, but that would have been quite the surprise if these idiots were right all along.

How would I know that? Tbh I don't follow your posts all that closely and I've only scanned your website.

IMHO it makes a difference. I'm a few years older than you-65- and prolly the last cohort to be greatly affected by Vietnam. After that, the war wound down and it wasn't an issue to younger students, but everyone from about the current age of 65-74 had to think pretty hard about it because young men were being drafted ... it wasn't an all-volunteer army like now.

When I was quite young, maybe about 8, I had what can only be described as an existential crisis. I suddenly realized that all of the comforting things that I had believed - the beautiful story of the baby Jesus, that I had a guardian angel watching over me, the sacrifices that Christ made for us (described in gruesome detail in the Stations of the Cross) were completely unprovable, and that the universe was a cold, dark, alien place. Probing that painful thought about what could or couldn't be proved even further, I realized that nobody could prove that reality existed. It could all be a dream. Worse, it might not even be MY dream (I think therefore I am - Kant) it might be someone else's (Berkeley)! Apparently I recapitulated a fair bit of modern philosophical thinking all on my own. At some point, I decided that stepping in front of a speeding 18-wheeler was probably not the best way to test that hypothesis, so I decided that I should behave AS IF the world were real on the chance that it was.

Who knows what lurks in the minds of eight year olds!

When you've rejected religion and are wrestling with what is reality at a tender age, it's not too far a step to question other things.

Well. Away from philosophy and on to economics. I developed an interest in economics when I was about 10. The book that stuck with me was "The Worldly Philosophers". You should give it a read.

Then on to politics.

I remember thinking in my teens that our voting system behaved like "one dollar, one vote".

I could never understand why we were in Vietnam. I remember Kennedy saying something about tin, and then there was the "domino theory" (that if Vietnam "fell to the Communists" all of the other SE Asian nations would fall too), but I remember looking at a map and thinking ... so what? It's not as of there were important resources there, it didn't control a major trade route. All of the explanations sounded like so much blah blah blah, where was the vital interest that would suck up 50,000 American lives and cause our nation to be riven by such strife?

But I didn't see it as EVIL until I saw "Hearts and Minds" which was a documentary of all of the horrors that we visited on the hapless people of Vietnam and Cambodia AND OUR OWN SOLDIERS: carpet bombing, Agent Orange, mass killing, tiger cages, drugs, prostitution, napalm, scorched earth warfare... when you witness such atrocities and, worse, participate in them, even if you're not killed or physically wounded you come back different. Like SECOND or worse. And for what???

That was the first time I saw those other people AS PEOPLE... unlike WISHY who only thinks of "them" in large lumps, like "brown people" or "foreigners", and can't empathize with them in the least. They grieved, they felt fear, they acted courageously, or cowardly, or opportunistically ... but we had brought them all of the horrors of war to them for no reason whatsoever. It is estimated that we killed 2 million Vietnamese people.

And then there were the death squads that Reagan unleashed on Nicaragua and other central American countries. The farce that was Grenada. Bush1's attack on Iraq - not only premeditated but provoked. Lebanon. Panama. Yugoslavia. Somalia. Afghanistan. Iraq - again. Libya. Syria. Yemen. There are more, I'm just not listing them all.

With every single "intervention" -with one exception- the people turned out poorer, more tyrannized than before.

So, are our foreign policy "experts" so stupid that they keep making the same "mistake" dozens of times over?

Or is something else at work here?

I just follow the logic, JO.

In any case, I developed a passionate interest in the environment (which I've followed personally and professionally) and - having been a woman in a male-dominated profession and experience prejudice personally - woman's rights. But not the "radical feminism" of today, which believes in contradictory things, like women can be ninja-warrior-prinxesses but are such scaredy-cats that they they have to have special hearinga that don't follow evidenciary law because they wilt if they have to bring a complaint against someone.

So as you can see, my mind wanders around quite a bit, which is why I find discussing topics like "What do you mean when you say society is 'working'"? so endlessly fascinating, and I would simply like someone to discuss this with.

****

Edited to add: So, if you want to know where my early opinions were formed, watch "Hearts and Minds" and read "The Wordly Philosophers" (Hielbroner), "Man Against Myth" (Dunham), "The Aquatic Ape" (Morgan), "Logic and Contemporary Rhetoric" (Kahane), and "Red Deer of Scotland" (Clutton-Brock, a scientific paper about evolution IRL). Also the "Elements of Programming".

It's been a quite a while since I've had time to read anything extensive. Too busy with real life, I guess.

SIGNY: IMHO it makes a difference.

JO: They didnt draft women.

But they were drafting schoolmates just a couple of years ahead of me, and could have drafted my boyfriend. That made it personal. Yanno, my older sis's university application was lost when the provost's office was firebombed. Kids just a few years older than me were shot and killed at Kent State. The ROTC office at university was bombed. The Democratic Convention in Chicago was a bloody nightmare, and all of this was on the nightly news, EVERY night. Yanno, when the media still reported the news. It wasn't some distant event. After our troops withdrew from Vietnam, everybody became all self-involved and got into jogging and "the professions": medicine, dentistry, law ... A friend of mine once observed one of the new-type students jogging around campus and sarcastically commented "Yeah. A healthy body in a healthy body". Like I said, I think it was a dividing line of sorts. I don't think you understand the milieu.

Anyway, you wanted to know how I came by my opinions, so that's my intellectual history in a nutshell. I don't know if the movie and books would have the same effect on you, but they left a lasting impression on me.

Mitch McConnell Working With Kentucky Legislature on Senate Exit Strategy

Under current law, the power to appoint McConnell’s replacement falls to Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear. But new legislation McConnell is pushing in the Kentucky General Assembly would strip the governor of that power and put it into the hands of the state GOP.

McConnell’s scramble to secure his legacy comes as his position in the party he effectively built from the ground up is increasingly shaky. McConnell’s denunciation of former President Donald Trump — even as it was accompanied by a vote of acquittal and a pledge to endorse the former president in 2024 if he is the GOP nominee — has brought on calls for his censure by party leaders across the state. A candidate running in McConnell’s mold would face an uphill climb through a primary in the new Republican Party — unless, that is, the candidate has the benefit of incumbency.

The 79-year-old McConnell has held his Senate seat since 1985 and handily won a seventh term last November.

The new legislation, Kentucky Senate Bill 228 — dubbed by some inside the state Legislature as the Daniel Cameron Election Bill — was filed on February 10, 2021, during the Kentucky General Assembly’s 30-day “short” session. The bill alters current state statute that allows the governor to appoint a replacement in the event of a vacancy to the U.S. Senate. If the bill becomes law, the appointment to fill a vacancy will be selected from a list of three names submitted by the state executive committee of the same political party as the senator who held the vacant seat. According to the bill, the appointee from that list will then serve until a successor has been elected by voters. The legislation goes on to list instructions on when elections take place in the event of a vacancy.

Republicans are concerned a successor appointed by Democrat Beshear would be a Democrat — rather than who McConnell would like to replace him.

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, also from Kentucky, is in “good” health. However, things could have turned out bad for Paul in 2017, after the junior senator was attacked for being a complete asshole by his Bowling Green, Kentucky, neighbor Rene Boucher. Paul suffered six broken ribs and ended up having part of his lung removed as a result of the attack. That could have resulted in death.

Oh, I remember the "duck and cover" drills and the short "How to protect yourself from radioactive fallout" public service films, and the Cuban Missile Crisis when people seriously thought about building fallout shelters in their backyard. In fact, I remember going with the family to look at some large cement sewer pipes that some guy was trying to sell as a fallout shelter that you could bury in your backyard and equip/stock. There was no shortage of fear-mongering then, too!

Quote:

Signy's right. You don't understand the milieu. Parents were terrified for their children, grandparents for their grandchildren. Siblings were terrified for their brothers, cousins for cousins, wives for husbands, girlfriends for boyfriends, and so on. Unless of course you think that no person ever has vital feelings for another person?

Everyone who knew anyone who could be drafted had to think to some degree about whether or not they would be willing to sacrifice that person in the war. And if they were NOT willing to sacrifice somebody, or several somebodies, to Vietnam, how far were they willing to go, and capable of going, to protect them.

The vital question people had to think about, about knowing someone who could go to Vietnam, was: what would people DO about it?

And if you think Trump is divisive, the Vietnam War was even more so. It divided families, 'demographics', and generations - between those who believed patriotism meant unquestioned sacrifice, and those who ultimately thought Vietnam wasn't worth America lives. One of my boyfriends (who grew up in a VERY rural Adirondacks area) told me that he was for (like a lot of rural offspring were 'for' going into Iraq and Afghanistan), his parents (older and wiser, and who moved to a rural area from an urban area) were against. Then there were the parents who thought their sons should go, otherwise they were useless hippie scum. It divided union hardhat democrats from peacenik democrats. And so on.

And for those who thought Vietnam was wrong, by whatever reason they came to that conclusion, the only answer they had was to stop the war by mass demonstrations, the likes of which you have not seen in your lifetime. And that was answered with brutal repression (ie the National Guard firing live ammo at unarmed demonstrators and killing them).

And yes, there was a distinct change in roughly 2-3 years once the war was over. And you are on the other side.

I've been harping about how awful the democrats* are since 2016:

Hillary Clinton: just because she deserves her own thread
http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=60433&p=1

And nobody who seems to be pro-democrat* here has addressed a single one of my objections. Nope, not one post on the particulars in all that time. Instead of addressing the problems with democrats* you - yes you JO, and your cohorts - seem content to take personal potshots instead.

WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO GET YOU TO STOP FOCUSING ON TRUMP (AND RUSSIA), AND ADDRESS AMERICAN PROBLEMS THAT DEMOCRATS* ARE NOT ADDRESSING? That's what I want to know.

BTW, as a registered democrat*, since 2016 I have not voted for a democrat*. People who get my vote only need to meet 2 requirements: 1) NOT the democrat*, and 2) having a platform that resembles my own views - which I have posted multiple times. But to reiterate: 1) focus on global warming, and 2) reduce the threat of nuclear confrontation with Russia. Both of these are EXISTENTIAL threats - ie, whether we and the planet survive in some reasonable fashion, or not.

And as you may have noticed democrats* have done absolutely nothing to reduce US global warming gas EMISSIONS, and are actively provoking Russia with unending sanctions about un-evidenced claims. (And let me point out, again, the difference between reality and delusion, news and propaganda, is EVIDENCE.)

For me, of course nuclear war is a critical issue.

But retaining sovereignty (including not signing any more "free trade" pacts), securing our borders, and ENDING OUR ENDLESS WARS are top priorities.

Yanno, the biggest waste of CO2 emissions and money is flying our planes and steaming our ships all over god's creation, and bombing people who're no threat to us whatsoever.

What in hell gives our warhawks and neocons the idea that we have a god-given right to go meddling in any nation that we feel like?

Fuck that shit.

If the Dems stand up a candidate that meets my essential points, I'll vote for him or her. If not, I'll vote for anyone else. I never stopped being an anti-war democrat; too bad the DNC did.

Quote:

Today’s characteristically luminous insights will be disordered and structurally horrifying, the sort of essay that would have sent my high-school English teacher into anaphylactic shock. In exculpation I plead laziness.

Recently I wrote a column on China’s digital yuan, now in late-stage testing. Bare-bones explanation: You download a digital-wallet app with which you can then send payments to anybody in the world who also has the app, no forms, bureaucracy, or bank account needed. OK, that’s cute, you say. Then, with my phenomenally perceptive, pincer-like grasp of the inescapable, I thought, it sounds scalable. If you can do it with thirty bucks (in yuan) for a hat from some store, why not with fifty million dollars (in yuan) for a shipment of oil from Iran? Sure, with more security and so on, but same mechanism.

Interestingly, such payments would be completely independent of, and opaque to, Washington. And independent of…SWIFT, eeeeeeek! Do you suppose China has thought of this?

Well, I thought, this is mere speculative maundering by some guy in Mexico who is admittedly pig ignorant of international finance. And of course China itself was saying that the dijjywan had nothing to do with the dollar, oh no, was solely for domestic use, and for retail sales. Not important. Move on. Nothing to see here.

But then, this: China is consulting, whatever that means, with Hong Kong, Thailand, and the UAE over using the dijjywan for international payments. Uh…say what? Thailand and the UAE are not particularly domestic to China. And I doubt that Beijing is intensely interested in the retail market of the UAE, which has the aggregate population of a large city bus. Methinks China has Something In mind. And it don’t bode good for sanctions, the petrodollar, and the like.

Nuther subject: Being fascinated by what looks like a shift of the world’s technological and economic center of gravity from the West to Asia, I poke about the web in the manner of an Ernest truffle hound, to see what the wily Orientals are doing. My results are not too systematic. My distinct impression is that things are happening over there, ideas popping up on Wednesday and in volume production by Friday afternoon, of energy and movement. By contrast, America looks asleep at the wheel. Except that it doesn’t have a wheel. A few almost random examples:

China ahead of America in patent applications for second year.

Business Insider:“ “China is moving ahead with a huge robot farming project…powered by 5G cellular technology, the agricultural tractor with self-driving mode can also be remotely controlled to carry out multiple intelligent functions” says Chinese governmental site Global Times

Beijing has successfully powered up its “artificial sun” nuclear fusion reactor for the first time, China’s People’s Daily reported on Friday. It’s designed to be a clean energy source, similar to the real Sun.”

The foregoing is overexcited as neither China nor anyone else has demonstrated controlled fusion, but it shows that the country is in the race.

Global Times (Again, mouthpiece of Beijing): China needs to increase its nuclear warheads to 1,000.” Because of American hostility.

Education. China finds its brightest students with a grueling entrance exam. America dumbs down elite high schools because they don’t have enough unqualified minorities. Thomas Jefferson High School in Virginia has already been enstupidated, and the NYC schools are on the block. The purpose of schools is to admit students who can’t do the work.

New York Post: “With this year’s state math and English exams canceled, a watered-down grading policy enacted, and the tossing of attendance, the key factors for admission to selective schools have been dropped or diminished…. “

America Ties with China in 2019 Math Olympiad

Well, not exactly. The 2019 U.S. team is: Vincent Huang, Luke Robitaille, Colin Tang, Edward Wan, Brandon Wang, and Daniel Zhu. China, it seems, tied with itself.

BBC: China’s Chang-e Five lunar-sample return mission safely parachutes into Mongolia. Very sophisticated engineering, and it worked. The US is ahead in space exploration, its Perseverance mission now on Mars being a marvel, but the gap ain’t what it used to be.

From NIO, a Chinese Electric Vehicle Start-up

If a car looks like this, I want one. Nio is working on a system in which “gas” stations remove a depleted battery and replace it with a charged one, thus eliminating the problem of long charging time. Will it fly? I don’t know, but those folks over there are scurrying. China, Japan, and South Korea, for example, are rapidly advancing hydrogen-powered fuel-cell cars.

China’s Quantum Computer Beats Google’s Sycamore in ‘Computational Supremacy’, Claims New Study

Also a bit overdone. My grasp of quantum computing equals that of a hardboiled egg, but this seems to indicate that China is holding its own in a field that is a Very Big Deal.

This photo was taken on July 3, 2016, the day the huge dish’s last panel was installed” Gret big sucker. Four years ago. China has the money to spend on pure science. Wow.

Miles of high-speed rail in the US: 0. Miles of maglev rail in US: 0. Likelihood of either any time soon: 0. Cost of new B21 intercontinental nuclear bomber: $550 million. Each.

China Will Begin Constructing ItsSpace Station in 2021

China to build 30 ‘fully connected’ 5G factories by 2023

Many think of Five G as being able to download movies in three seconds. Actually, with high throughput and low latency, combined with artificial intelligence and edge computing, it will be hugely important in managing smart factories, transportation networks, smart cities, and so on. This is why Washington wants to block it. Meanwhile china is catching up in AI, it seems.

China-developed hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid locomotive rolls off assembly line

“Huawei’s Harmony OS Extends to All Devices in 2021 in Bid for Tech Self-Sufficiency Amid US Trade War.”

This is interesting. Tech commentators have pointed out, correctly but without too much insight, that Huawei will have a hard time selling phones with Harmony outside of China because Trump cut the company off from using the Android operating system’s app store. Google.” Huawei is now preloading Harmony on all of its product, making it independent of Google.

Now we have. Huawei May Allow Chinese Smartphone Firms to Use Harmony OS to Counter Trump Trade Bans,

This means that all of China’s phone companies are independent of Android, at least in China, as, if threatened by the US, they just switch to Harmony. It also means that China, should it choose, could ban Android in Chinas as Trump banned Huawei in the US, and perhaps ban iOS also, thus losing the entire Chinese market for Google and Apple. Forcing a large, resourceful country to build competing products might charitably be called preternaturally stupid.

Which brings us to the new Cold War, which is exactly what Trump II is engaged in. The Beltway China hawks want to cripple China’s tech industry by denying it advanced semiconductor technology, chiefly from America’s vassal states of Holland, Taiwan, and South Korea. Will this work? I dunno. But there is a clear pattern in China’s response. A sort of techy example, that sensible readers can skip.

There is a company in Wuhan, YMTC, Yangtze Memory Technology Company, that has developed an advanced 192-layer dual-wafer NAND (“flash”) chip using Chinese technology. Flash memory is used in huge quantities in everything from smartphones to French fries (well, maybe not French fries.) There is some doubt as to whether the company will be able to produce in volume, but it is building a second fab line, so it must think it can.

If it does, American companies, notably Micron, will lose the (very large) Chinese market for flash. Then the Chinese, nothing if not commercial, will probably flood the world market with discount flash.

This tech-wide lunge for self-sufficiency, if Washington does not succeed in crushing it, will close the Chinese market progressively for American firms. Well, who needs 1.4 billion customers? The China hawks may be poking the wrong bear.

RCRWireless News: “Chinese operators to build over 1 million 5G base stations in 2021:

“According to estimates from Wu Hequan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the total number of 5G base stations in China could reach more than 1.7 million by the end of next year.”

US fumbles, fiddles, sucks thumb. Years behind. It is now forcing UK to uninstall Huawei gear. Great diplomatic triumph. Brilliant future
