Star Trek is dead to me, I have tried to watch new Star Trek but I can't for me I might have to admit it died with Roddenberry

It was alwasy on tv when I was growing up, Janeway and Voyager was always on tv, other shows like Deep Space Nine or the Next Generation or Animated Trek could be seen on re-runs, Broadcast syndication, some purist people din't any other Treks there was only Captain Kirk and the Movies. star Trek ran its voyage and then Other shows like Firefly, the Mandalorian, toons like Futurama, the Orville and Farscape came along that were simply better scifi...while Star Trek lost what made it unique.

I took many things from Trek, I understood the guy who created it was a Leftist, he was probably a type of futurist and liberal progressive but I wonder did he also have hidden conservative messages underneath that would be taboo today, I understand the Foudnation is run by Rod Roddenberry the son who enevr knew the show but then studied the lfie work of his father.

Prime Directive - do not sell high tech, or guns or new scifi type missiles
to Lower civilisations
I wonder is there a message here
Maybe the PRIME DIRECTIVE is one of the Trek Federation's most sacred laws,

a mohammedan stone age culture that attacks young and old, that prays to a bandit terrorist named moohammad, a culture mutilates the genitals of kids and has 'bacha bazi' stones women to death, a culture that throws gays of high buildings

Why sell these guys more boimbs and guns....why gift them high tech weapons from the USA...Not Russia, not Britain, not Israel, not Ukraine, NOT the USA, NOBODY should be making contact with the islamist and sell the jihadis weapons!!!

its common sense

That's one of the messages I think StarTrek told

After the USA pulled out of Vietnam no Buddhists or Vietcong launched kamikaze jihad attacks on US soil

As for Assad he was probably one of the better, 'ood guys' for lack of a better term
the other choice was ISIS and a bunch fo other islamist jihadi mohammedans

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

The funniest criticism of the original Star Trek came from, I believe Isaac Azimov.

The only part that I remember, but I remember to this day, was his criticism that they potentially decapitated their ship by sending down the Captain, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Science Officer, the Chief Engineer ... and some hapless throwaway crew member ... to hostile situations or to new planets in every episode.

The comment as I recall went something like ... "They have 400 crew members but you never really see them. What are they doing ... stoking coal?"

Yeah, I did like the original Star Trek except for the Captain who was an overacted blowhard. Aside from him, it was a good show.

Oh wow. Waaaaay off topic. My bad!

How the US created a world of endless war

In 2008, many of Barack Obama’s supporters hoped he would bring the global war on terror to a close. Instead, he expanded it – and his successors have done nothing to change course

by Samuel Moyn, 31 Aug 2021

On 23 May 2013, the peace activist Medea Benjamin attended a speech by President Barack Obama at Fort McNair in Washington DC, where he defended his administration’s use of armed drones in counter-terrorism. During his speech, Benjamin interrupted the president to criticise him for not having closed Guantánamo Bay and for pursuing military solutions over diplomatic ones. She was swiftly ejected by military police and the Secret Service. The Washington Post later dismissed her as a “heckler”. Obama himself had been more reflective at the event, engaging with her criticisms, which led to even deeper self-criticism of his own. It was the moment of greatest moral clarity about war during a presidency that did more than any other to bring its endless and humane American form fully into being.

For all its routine violence, the American way of war is more and more defined by a near complete immunity from harm for the American side and unprecedented care when it comes to killing people on the other.

Obama had run as a kind of anti-war candidate in his fairytale 2008 campaign, and when it turned out that he was a hard-bitten pragmatist, in this and other areas, many of his supporters were surprised. Obama expanded the “war on terror” to an awesome extent, while making it sustainable for a domestic audience in a way his predecessor never did – in part because Obama understood the political uses of transforming American warfare in a humane direction.

“Lawyerliness suffused the Obama administration,” observed Charlie Savage, the New York Times reporter who broke many explosive national security stories during the Obama years. But that lawyerliness often served as an elaborate rationalisation process. The president’s men and women, Savage has written, “were trying to fight al-Qaida while adhering to what they saw as the rule of law”. Though what they saw as the rule of law meant little more than self-regulation, their commitment to humane standards of fighting war – while by no means perfect in legal theory or military practice – had rhetorical power for some Americans, significant effects on the fighting itself, and helped produce endless war.

How the U.S. Military Lied About the 9/11 Wars

For generals like David Petraeus and Lloyd Austin, there has been no punishment for 20 years of disinformation on Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pretty much every day since 9/11, the U.S. military has disciplined soldiers who failed to do their jobs properly. They have been punished for minor offenses, like being late for duty, and for serious crimes, such as murder or assault. Since 2001, there have been more than 1.3 million cases of discipline in the armed forces, according to the Pentagon’s annual reports on military justice.

But the generals who misled Congress and the American public about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have not needed to worry about negative consequences for their careers. After 20 years of conducting a disinformation campaign about what was really happening on the ground, not a single U.S. general has faced any punishment. The reverse happened — they were praised for their deceptively upbeat assessments and given more stars, and when they retired with generous military pensions, they landed high-paying jobs on corporate boards, further profiting from their disingenuousness.

This disconnect is getting new scrutiny after the collapse of the American campaign in Afghanistan. Last month, a Marine officer posted a video in which he scorched the country’s generals for the chaos of the evacuations from Kabul. His video went viral, especially on right-wing platforms that prefer to focus only on the war’s final act under President Joe Biden. But Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller’s video — which elicited a rapid reaction from the military’s machinery of discipline, with Scheller being relieved of his command in hours — has stirred up a deeper critique of America’s generals.

“Four-star general officers are treated with great respect in the U.S. military — akin to modern day viceroys,” wrote Andrew Milburn, a retired colonel, in an article in Marine Corps Times last week. “Their exalted position shouldn’t permit them to execute without question an interminable and costly war to no end. Or, worse, to offer continuous assurance that the war was going well when it wasn’t. … Despite two wars that have seen their shares of disasters — not a single general officer has been relieved of his duties for incompetence.”

In Afghanistan and Iraq, several hundred thousand civilians and combatants have perished (including more than 7,000 American soldiers), millions of people have become refugees, and trillions of dollars have been wasted. Politicians were responsible for this, pundits were responsible, and so-called experts from think tanks were responsible too. But the generals were closest to these wars and most aware, or should have been, of what was happening. Few were closer or profited more than two in particular: Gen. Lloyd Austin, who is now secretary of defense, and Gen. David Petraeus, one of the most lauded military figures of the past 20 years.

. . . A few years after the invasion, Austin returned to Iraq as the commander of U.S. forces there, and later he took charge of Central Command, the headquarters for military operations in the Middle East and Afghanistan. His charmed path became even more charmed after he retired from the military. In addition to drawing a monthly pension of about $15,000, Austin joined several corporate boards, including the board of directors of United Technologies Corporation, the military contractor that merged with Raytheon in 2020, from which he has received more than $1.5 million, and advisory boards at Booz Allen Hamilton and a private equity firm called Pine Island Capital Partners. Biden’s secretary of defense owns a $2.6 million mansion in the Washington, D.C., area with seven bedrooms, a five-car garage, two kitchens, and a pool house.

The Senate hasn't made a declaration of war since 1942, so the Senate has stopped being responsible for who the Pentagon kills.
https://www.senate.gov/about/powers-procedures/declarations-of-war.htm

And Presidents have made it clear that the military-industrial complex is making the decisions about who to kill while Presidents only put their signature on plans prewritten by the complex. The White House's control ends when the President signs the documents. If he won't sign, the killings won't begin, but how often do Presidents sign a document specifying exactly who the Pentagon can kill? How about never, except in the case where Trump called for an assassination of Iranian General Suleimani, but the complex did all of Trump's thinking for him. All Trump had to do is sign the document and Suleimani along with a bunch of extraneous Iraqis who happened to be close by would die at the Baghdad airport.

Barry got the Nobel Peace Prize and started more wars than GWB. Trump was the anomaly.

I still can't figure out why Biden* did what he did right now and followed through with it.

I'm considering it a happy accident with his dementia until there is proof otherwise. Who knows? Maybe he realized that his days on this plane of existence are numbered and he grew a conscience and a backbone. That'd be a happy accident too.

Oh those big bad senate republicans. Are they the reason why 28 of 50 democratic senators voted in 2002 "authorizing the use of the United States Armed Forces against Saddam Hussein's Iraq government in what would be known as Operation Iraqi Freedom."? ... a resolution that Obama freely exploited as President?

Did those big bad republicans force 50 out of 52 democratic senators to vote for the US PATRIOT act?

The simple explanation is that Democrats will get credit from voters if the war is won and Bush will get all the blame from the voters in the extremely unlikely chance, ha-ha!, that the war is lost. What would happen to a Democratic Senator if he had voted against the war and Bush quickly won? That would be used against the Democrat in the very next election.

Voters, very apparently, aren't smart. For example, voters were angry about 9/11 and wanted revenge, but the men behind 9/11 were already dead. Revenge made no sense, but that is what the voters wanted and that is what the Senators gave the voters.

Voters, at least those who haven't been in the military, have the quaint idea from WWII that the present day American military can win any war and is competently run and the military will tell the truth about how the war is preceding. That set of weirdly unrealistic beliefs is why America keeps getting into war after war but doesn't win.

I am certain the military-industrial complex knows that shooting wars make more money for the industry than peace, so the Pentagon will keep pushing for more war, despite never winning. Losing probably is more profitable than winning, so it is kind of doubtful that fiascoes such as Afghanistan and Iraq will discourage the Pentagon from promoting war against, for example, Iran.

These endless wars might stop if the Senate would once again make declarations of war, something it hasn't done since 1942. The Constitution grants Congress the sole power to declare war. These modern Senators need to start, rather late in life, acting responsible and being held responsible by the voters for wars that are lost, but I am not expecting modern American voters to be that mature.

Just watched as a massive crane took down the magnificent and very famous statue of “Robert E. Lee On His Horse” in Richmond, Virginia. If only we had Robert E. Lee to command our troops in Afghanistan, that disaster would have ended in a complete and total victory many years ago. -- Donald Trump, Sept 8, 2021
https://www.donaldjtrump.com/news/news-nqqxjy65sh0

I wonder if Trump is aware that General Lee lost the Civil War, surrendering 28,000 troops? Lee's surrender triggered the collapse of the Confederate Army across many far-flung battlefields over the next 16 months.

For Trump to read, if he wants to really know why America lost the Afghanistan War and why the Confederacy lost the Civil War:

The Myth of the Kindly General Lee

The legend of the Confederate leader’s heroism and decency is based in the fiction of a person who never existed. The strangest part about the continued personality cult of Robert E. Lee is how few of the qualities his admirers profess to see in him he actually possessed. Lee’s elevation is a key part of a 150-year-old propaganda campaign designed to erase slavery as the cause of the Civil War and whitewash the Confederate cause as a noble one.

Lee told a New York Herald reporter, in the midst of arguing in favor of somehow removing black people from the South (“disposed of,” in his words), “that unless some humane course is adopted, based on wisdom and Christian principles, you do a gross wrong and injustice to the whole negro race in setting them free. And it is only this consideration that has led the wisdom, intelligence and Christianity of the South to support and defend the institution (of slavery) up to this time.”

Obviously, you won't understand because people who vote Trump see traitors, Communists, terrorists everywhere they look, but:

Executive Order 9066 authorized concentration camps for about 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry. Two-thirds were U.S. citizens, half of them children.

Gen. John DeWitt, head of the Western Defense Command, had a theory: “A Jap is a Jap.” A 1943 report on the “evacuation,” prepared under his direction, made clear that the supposed “military necessity” was based on racism. The report said that an invasion by Japan of the West Coast was probable, and that it was “impossible” to distinguish loyal (if there were such) from disloyal Japanese American citizens: “The Japanese race is an enemy race and while many second- and third-generation Japanese born on United States soil, possessed of United States citizenship, have become ‘Americanized,’ the racial strains are undiluted.”

This report was kept from the Supreme Court when it upheld the internments in 1944.

DeWitt said that “the interception of unauthorized radio communications” emanating from along the West Coast “conclusively” explained Japanese attacks on U.S. ships. The FBI, however, found “no information” of “any espionage activity ashore or ... illicit shore-to-ship signaling.” Nevertheless, to some people, whose racial animus was heated by war fever, the complete absence of Japanese American sabotage was seen as sinister evidence of how stealthily the homegrown enemies were biding their time.

Meanwhile, Japanese American soldiers, some of whose families were interned, were distinguishing themselves in the war’s European theater — even though for a period after Pearl Harbor the Army took away their rifles. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team, composed of Japanese Americans, fought its way up Italy and into France, where it suffered 1,000 casualties rescuing 175 Texans of the 36th Texas Division’s “lost battalion” that had been cut off by Germans. By the war’s end, the 442nd was the most decorated unit for its size in U.S. history.

In 1988, Congress formally apologized for the internments, and provided reparations checks of $20,000 to 82,000 victims. In 2018, the Supreme Court repudiated its 1944 decision as “gravely wrong the day it was decided” and “overruled in the court of history.”

Enemies Foreign and Domestic

The forever wars had turned inward. Americans were so used to considering themselves at war with enemies they didn’t understand — and to a constant agitation at the hum of perennial conflict — that they were turning on one another. When a country is at war for so long, moral boundaries gradually fall away. The forbidden becomes permissible, first overseas and then at home. The idea of collateral damage is one example: In the war on terror, we’ve decided, the deaths of innocents are allowed and even justified, so long as they help us feel safe. Another is unbounded conflict: the idea that anyone, anywhere can be a target, that the battle is everywhere, all the time. First the war expanded, under President George W. Bush, to the foreign suspects detained and tortured far from Iraq and Afghanistan. Then it kept stretching: to Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S. citizen killed in Yemen under President Barack Obama, along with his 16-year-old American son, and to anyone killed in the drone strikes or secret commando raids in the many countries the war on terror has touched. A third concept is the ability to label broad swaths of people as insurgents and terrorists and the freedom this gives you to demean, monitor, imprison, and attack them.

These three ideas came together at a Veterans of Foreign Wars hall near Nashville, Tennessee, one evening last July. I was sitting in a windowless banquet room with a few dozen people who’d responded to a call from the Oath Keepers, a prominent militant group known for recruiting soldiers and police. As we waited for the meeting to begin, an Iraq War veteran about my age began telling me about street battles and running convoys down Iraq’s deadly highways. Then he started talking about how sometimes in Iraq, American soldiers had to kill children. A kid might emerge from an alley strapped with a bomb, and there’d be nothing to do but shoot to save yourself. Someone else chimed in: “I’d prefer that to the alternative of being splattered against the wall.” To which my conversation partner had a two-word reply: “Pink mist.”

When a country is at war for so long, moral boundaries gradually fall away. The forbidden becomes permissible, first overseas and then at home.

The meeting’s organizer arrived: Stewart Rhodes, the Oath Keepers leader. He stood before the crowd and began to rile them about the threat of a stolen election and how it was connected to the protests and violence in the streets. He was calling the protesters insurgents and domestic terrorists. He said that soon antifa would be using IEDs, or improvised explosive devices. It was jarring how precisely the speech mirrored the conversation I’d just been having, how seamlessly the old conflicts overseas could blend into the new one at home. “Us old vets and younger ones,” Rhodes finally said, “are going to end up having to kill these young kids.”

It can feel at times that the forever wars are, for many on the militant right, a prelude to the battle they think they’re waging now in their own country. Like Rhodes, they paint elements of the left as insurgents and domestic terrorists and talk about how war at home might be brutal but necessary, a step along the way to making peace with civilian suffering. The veterans among them obsess over the oath they swore to protect the Constitution “against all enemies, foreign and domestic” — and to them, foreign and domestic enemies have become one and the same. The left, in their minds, combines all the threats they fear most: Black Lives Matter, antifa, Marxists, undocumented immigrants, radical Muslims. But it’s not only people involved with militant groups who speak this way; calling leftists insurgents and domestic terrorists is widespread on the American right.

American soldiers should have been stranded in Afghanistan because they are terrorists: U.S. active-duty military personnel and reservists have participated in a growing number of domestic terrorist plots and attacks, according to new data from CSIS. The percentage of all domestic terrorist incidents linked to active-duty and reserve personnel rose in 2020 to 6.4 percent, up from 1.5 percent in 2019 and none in 2018.

6ix, your kind of thinking means not letting American soldiers back into America because you can't know which soldiers were driven insane while in Afghanistan and will become killers of Americans once the soldiers return. Better to be safe than sorry you let soldiers return from Afghanistan.

6ix, American soldiers who served in Afghanistan returned and, in reality, have killed Americans, which makes American soldiers an actual threat to America while refugees are only 6ix's potential threat. Just so you know what is going on here in America, 6ix.

Back to Afghanistan ... one news source had a rather long story about how China excoriated Blinken for the mess that is Afghanistan, and made a point of saying to the effect - you'll get no cooperation from us unless you join in an international effort to make things right. Or, as I read it - we're at economic war if you expect China to pick up your Afghanistan tab.

That wasn't widely reported in the m$m.

China's actions vis-à-vis the US will be an important topic to follow.

Your first point actually is that all Afghans are "primitive people who believe in a diseased god". Can you prove it is all Afghans? Your second point follows from your first point: all Afghans should be excluded from America. Meanwhile, I can prove that some American soldiers return from Afghanistan and go on to murder Americans. Sure would be nice if those murderers weren't let back into America, you know what I mean, 6ix? Obviously you never will know because you struggle to stay in the middle class, exactly like all the Texans I know who voted for Trump twice and will vote for him again and again. You Trump voters have tough lives, plagued with problems, because you are using the same worn-out brain to vote as you use for the rest of your problem-solving.

6ix, the other day you listed all your substances: alcohol, marijuana, coffee (24 cups a day! That can't be right). I should have bookmarked that entry. I forgot cigarettes. Wow! Substance abuse puts you right in the middle of pack of Trumptards. Then there are your teeth ... you don't have any. Then there is your job ... you don't have one. Then there is your family ... what a family. Then there are you beliefs ... you have got far too many beliefs. 6ix, you've got problems, very fixable but you are not fixing them, that will kill you long before you get to 80 years old. Dropping dead sooner rather than later is a very strong sign that most of your previous actions were incorrect. But there is one thing you have got in common with Texans I knew that are now dead; you've got optimism. But what you need, and every other Trump voter I know, is pessimism. Not pessimism about America but about yourself, your abilities, your opinions, and how you spent your life. No more of this nonsense that all Trump voters have that they know what they are doing ... and you need a plan that makes sense. This assumes you want to live to old age. For now, you have got the home remodeling to distract you, but eventually you'll be done. What will you do next?

US final drone strike in Afghanistan was 43-year-old Zemari Ahmadi, who died with nine members of his family, including seven children, when a missile from a US air force Reaper drone struck his car as he arrived home from work in a residential neighborhood of Kabul.

This is why America keeps losing wars. Not because America kills civilians, although that does make more enemies, but because America insists it didn't when it did. The constant lying and confusion and purposeless killings are a guaranteed strategy for losing war after war.

Where did the $5 trillion spent on Afghanistan and Iraq go?

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/sep/11/us-afghanistan-i
raq-defense-spending

Congress used “emergency” and “contingency” funding that circumvented the normal budget process. For the first decade of the conflict, the US used emergency appropriations, which are typically reserved for one-off crises such as floods and hurricanes. Detailed spending oversight was minimal. And because this type of spending is excluded from budget projections and deficit estimates, it enabled everyone to sustain the pretense that the wars would be over shortly.

The result was what former defense secretary Robert Gates termed a “culture of endless money” inside the Pentagon. The defense department made the operational decisions; managed the bidding process for contractors; awarded the contracts (largely using non-competitive bids); and kept at least 10% of the wartime funding in classified accounts.

Not even the financial crisis of 2008 could interrupt the spending spree. While Congress imposed across-the-board spending caps on government programs, war spending was specifically excluded. The Pentagon was able to use the special “contingency” war budget to buy upgrades, services and new equipment that were barely related to Iraq or Afghanistan. Consequently, the Pentagon budget kept growing – and was able to double its size between 2001 and 2020.

There have been no 9/11-scale terrorist attacks in the United States in the past 20 years. Meanwhile, according to the most recent estimates from Brown University’s Costs of War Project, at least 897,000 people around the world have died in violence that can be classified as part of the war on terror.

In the most notorious massacre of the war, US SSgt Robert Bales walked out of a nearby base to slaughter local families in cold blood. He killed 16 people, nine of them children.

Haji Muhammad Wazir lost almost all his immediate family in the early hours of 11 March 2012. It was more than a decade after the twin towers came down, but they were the reason the US military was on his doorstep.

Bales killed his wife, four sons, four daughters and two other relatives. He shot the children in the head then tried to burn their bodies.

“It is very hard for me, I still feel like these things are happening right now,” Wazir told the Guardian, nearly a decade after the almost unimaginable slaughter ripped apart his life. “I am very happy the American forces have finally left Afghanistan, and very grateful to Allah for making this happen. At last I feel safe.”

Those murders were perhaps the most high-profile civilian deaths of the war. But it was not the only time foreign forces killed large numbers of women, children and non-combatant men, in just this one corner of a single district of Afghanistan.

These terrible losses, repeated in many parts of Afghanistan, would prove powerful recruiting tools for the Taliban, as they slowly gathered their forces to retake the country.

“I could not go and fight, because I was the only person left from my family to look after my son, but I was supporting them financially and in other ways,” Wazir said of the aftermath of his tragedy.

The Taliban commander for Panjwai district said, “Although some people were supporting us before, after this incident everyone joined or helped us in some way.”

New Woodward/Costa book: Trump secret memo ordering withdrawal from Afghanistan blindsided national security team

Just eight days after the 2020 election, then-President Donald Trump was so determined to end the war in Afghanistan during his presidency that he secretly signed a memo to withdraw all troops by January 15, 2021, according to a new book, "Peril," from journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.

Donald Trump et al. standing next to a man in a suit and tie: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley chats with President Donald Trump after he delivered the State of the Union address at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on February 4, 2020.© OLIVIER DOULIERY/AFP/Getty Images Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley chats with President Donald Trump after he delivered the State of the Union address at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on February 4, 2020.

The November 11 memo, according to the authors, had been secretly drafted by two Trump loyalists and never went through the normal process for a military directive -- the secretary of defense, national security adviser and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs had all never seen it. Unpredictable, impulsive, Trump had done an end run around his whole national security team.

In a remarkable scene, the authors write, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley, newly appointed acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller and his new chief of staff Kash Patel were all blindsided when the memo arrived at the Pentagon.

Woodward and Costa reproduced the memo in "Peril." The directive was titled, "Memorandum for the Acting Secretary of Defense: Withdrawal from Somalia and Afghanistan," and the memo read: "I hereby direct you to withdraw all US forces from the Federal Republic of Somalia no later than 31 December 2020 and from the Islamic Republican of Afghanistan no later than 15 January 2021. Inform all allied and partner forces of the directives. Please confirm receipt of this order."

Nobody will lose their job over this, the final act in a 20 year long play:

An investigation by U.S. Central Command has determined that an Aug. 29 drone strike in Kabul killed an innocent aid worker and nine members of his family, not a member of the ISIS-K terrorist group, a top general announced Friday. “Our investigation now concludes that the strike was a tragic mistake." But not so tragic that some general gets fired.

McKenzie on Friday stood by the intelligence the military used to determine the target, noting the threat to the airport was posed by a "white Toyota Corolla," the same type of car that was destroyed in the strike, and that the military had "no indication that the strike would result in civilian casualties."

In the 48 hours before the strike, the military had "a substantial body of intelligence" indicating that there would be another attack, and one recurring theme was that ISIS-K would use a white Toyota Corolla as a key element, McKenzie said.

Based on that intelligence, the military began surveilling the car belonging to the target and continued observing its movements for eight hours, McKenzie said.

There are approximately 10,000 White Corollas in Kabul so the US military picked one because who but a sneaky terrorist trying to blend in drives a Toyota?

McKenzie declined to comment as to whether anyone will be disciplined over the strike, noting that the investigation is ongoing. "I have nothing for you now because that involves personnel issues," he said. Nobody in the US Military gets fired for randomly killing civilians, rag-heads or gooks, if they can imagine any kind of plausible, although lamebrain, excuse for killing.

It’s been 20 years since the beginning of the War on Terror. The U.S. launched two wars, leading to millions dead or wounded.

We also saw unmanned drones killing innocent civilians, widespread surveillance, innocent people imprisoned, and perpetual human rights abuses and war crimes; trillions of dollars, squandered. And we’re now seeing a turning point in the War in Afghanistan, with the Taliban retaking the country.

Throughout these 20 years, we’ve seen terrible systematic failures across institutions — whether it be the government, military leadership, and even the press.

And for the elite responsible for this mess?

There hasn’t been any accountability.

The people who actually led us into these wars are still there, and they still have platforms. The journalists who helped sell these wars still have platforms. The generals, and the military people, and the experts who helped justify and propagate the atrocities that took place, they still have platforms, and they have money, and they have lucrative careers.

Accountability, at least from a foreign policy perspective, looks like questioning the government’s claim, every time there is a drone strike. I would like to see Congress actually having sessions about hospitals that are destroyed, and people who are disappeared because of the U.S., or because of the U.S.’s foreign fight.

There really needs to be more holding power to account in Congress, in the courts, and in the media. And one of the things I would really love a White House reporter to do next time is to ask the Biden administration: “You’ve pulled out of Afghanistan, are you going to end the War on Terror?”

What is the population of Afghanistan? 40,000,000

https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/afghanistan-population/

How many Taliban fighters are there? 80,000

If the 40,000,000 disorganized don't want 80,000 pushing them around forever, they need to push back, but they all run and hide, instead. They have been running away from a fight all their lives because they fear death. Will somebody please show them how to grow a spine? The US Army and Marine Corps certainly failed to show them.

NO APOLOGIES
The U.S. Military Often Kills Civilians — and Rarely Offers Compensation

The U.S.-led coalition has carried out 34,781 airstrikes in Iraq and Syria since 2014, and the U.K.-based monitoring group Airwars estimates that coalition actions led to the deaths of between 8,317 and 13,190 civilians, of whom 3,715 have been identified. The coalition itself only acknowledges the deaths of 1,417 civilians. An Intercept review of public records shows that only one person whose family members were killed by a coalition airstrike in Iraq or Syria has received official compensation.

The U.S. military sometimes issues condolence or “ex gratia” payments. These are not legal compensation or an admission of liability, and civilians cannot seek them out — the military issues them at the discretion of commanders. But in 2020, despite Congress approving a $3 million fund for ex gratia payments, the Pentagon did not issue a single payment.

Conditions for making the payment do not revolve around whether there has been a wrongful death but rather whether the payment will help the U.S. “What we’ve seen in that recent interim policy is that the U.S. military really sees ex gratia pretty singularly as a counterterrorism tool,” says Annie Shiel, a senior adviser for the Center for Civilians in Conflict, or CIVIC. “This means that they have been used primarily in countries where the U.S. ground troops needed to engage with the local populace, which until recently included Afghanistan.”

The US Military lost recent wars because of exactly that attitude. The American troops kill civilians at random, causing problems for America. Remember how WWII ended? America killing civilians? What problem did that cause? Caused a nuclear arms race. America made a clear statement at the end of WWII that it would proudly kill civilians with nukes and the rest of the world made a statement that it would nuke America if America tried again.
