Trump says media is part of vetting his nominees: 'We save a lot of money that way'

President Trump on Friday defended the vetting process at the White House, telling the news media that he allows it to do much of the heavy lifting while simultaneously blaming it for the withdrawal of his nominee to lead intelligence agencies.

What a complete moron. As are the trolls who've posted here for years complaining about perceived corrupt elected officials behaviors, and who not only continue to act as those Trump isn't the worst of the worst. But try and pass off that he is doing a good job.

It saddens me to admit that our trolls here at firefly fans are the dumbest of the dumb.

John Ratcliffe (R-Loser) Gets the Full Trump Treatment

The resume-padding backbencher raved at Mueller on camera and found himself at the peak of Trump’s regard. But like a gram of pure coke, there are consequences when the fun stops.

The rule holds: Everything Trump touches dies.

From standing on the verge of one of Washington’s most powerful offices to a tweeted shrug of dismissal from the President, Congressman John Ratcliffe (R-Coffeeboy) is the latest, inevitable victim of the career-ending, reputation-shattering career curse that is Donald Trump.

As the two-term Congressman’s flimsy resume hit the light of day, the petty, easily discovered lies and contractions in his record exploded in his face like Trump 20 seconds into a lapdance. Far from being the terrorist-fighting superstar federal prosecutor, Ratcliffe turned out to be a bog-standard U.S. attorney. His sins were little beyond the usual campaign resume fluffing, but it turned out he was about as qualified to be the Director of National Intelligence as Hope Hicks is to pilot the next SpaceX flight into orbit. If Ratcliffe walked off the street to apply for a job at the Office of National Intelligence and told the same lies about his record he told to his constituents, he’d be laughed out of the room.

The press offers the least coverage to the most predictable things politicians do. Barack Obama didn’t get much coverage for boilerplate comments about tax fairness or how Obamacare was working pretty well. There’s little attention paid to Mitch McConnell’s daily fulminations against regulations and socialism. Perhaps offense and bigotry should be understood as Trump’s baseline — newsworthy, just as the central projects of other leaders are newsworthy, but not worthy of blanket coverage upon every utterance.

Perhaps Trump should only get the coverage he seeks when he acts like the president rather than an internet troll. In this theory, a new health care proposal released by the White House might deserve coverage, but the latest round of insult comedy at a rally gets ignored. Perhaps, to receive the coverage he seeks, Trump should have to normalize himself.

Maybe that strategy would leave more room, too, to cover everyone else in politics, so people could more clearly see and debate possible solutions to actual problems the country faces.

Trump’s not exactly a 9-to-5 president — especially on Fridays

As he has dozens of times as president, Donald Trump cut out of work a bit early on Friday, walking out of the White House to board Marine One before flying to one of his private company’s resort properties for the weekend.

This Friday, Trump’s departure was a bit earlier than normal. He usually heads out to the helicopter at about 4 p.m. or so, forgoing that final hour of the typical American workweek. Why he has to leave at 4 isn’t clear. He takes a helicopter to catch a plane to New Jersey or Florida, depending on the season. In other words, he’s not tying up rush-hour traffic or anything, so why not just stick around until 5 like the rest of us?

Pentagon report blames Trump for the return of ISIS in Syria and Iraq

www.businessinsider.com/pentagon-blames-trump-for-return-of-isis-syria
-and-iraq-2019-8

The Pentagon inspector general found that President Donald Trump’s decision to rapidly pull troops out of Syria and divert attention from diplomacy in Iraq has aided the Islamic State’s regrouping in Syria and Iraq.

The Department of Defense’s quarterly report to Congress on the effectiveness of the US Operation Inherent Resolve mission said that “ISIS continued its transition from a territory-holding force to an insurgency in Syria, and it intensified its insurgency in Iraq” — even though Trump said ISIS was defeated and the caliphate quashed.

Many officials and experts have repeatedly warned Trump that a rapid US withdrawal from Syria would enable ISIS to regroup into an insurgency after their battlefield defeats by the US-led coalition.

The Inspector General’s report also explicitly said the troop drawdown in Syria, which Trump announced at the end of last year, contributed to instability in the region. The drawdown, which prompted the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, left the US’s Syrian partners in the lurch, without the training or support they needed to confront a resurgent ISIS. In Iraq, the Iraqi security forces lack the necessary infrastructure to fight off ISIS for sustained periods.

Trump campaigned in part on a promise to withdraw the US from conflicts in the Middle East, as part of his "America First" policy. But his shortsighted decision-making based on that premise doesn't just destabilize Iraq and Syria, it also has the potential to do the same in Afghanistan, where the US is negotiating with the Taliban to withdraw from the country.

Trump has been caught in adultery many times. This study applies to him:

CEOs Who Cheat In Bedroom Will Cheat In Boardroom (or White House), Study Shows.

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-08-09/ceos-who-cheat-on-spouse-tw
ice-as-likely-to-cheat-at-work-study

Finance professors at the University of Texas at Austin and Emory University found a strong correlation between adultery and workplace misconduct by corporate executives and financial advisers. "[The researchers] were able to examine customers of Ashley Madison, a dating site for married people looking to have affairs, or 'discreet encounters' as it puts it," reports Bloomberg. "That's because a computer hack in 2015 exposed the names and personal data of more than 30 million users." From the report:

Researchers examined four groups of users specifically -- a total of 11,000 brokers, corporate executives, white-collar criminals and police officers. Cross-checking against public records, they found that those Ashley Madison customers generally were more than twice as likely to have violated professional codes of conduct compared with a control group, according to authors John Griffin, Samuel Kruger and Gonzalo Maturana.

The results were fairly consistent across the four occupations. For example, the study found that 4.1% of individuals accused of violating securities laws by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission between 2010 and 2015 had paid accounts at Ashley Madison. That compared to 1% of the control population, which consisted of people with similar work histories but no misconduct charges. CEOs and CFOs who had accounts were twice as likely to have engaged in a financial misstatement or be the focus of a class action securities lawsuit between 2008 and 2014. Cheating brokers were more likely than the control group to have black marks on their records maintained by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.

The findings are to be published next week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dang! There goes my hero, Jack Kennedy.

Remember Vietnam? That was JFK. Bay of Pigs? That was also JFK. Remember the Cuban Missile Crisis? JFK, again. The building of thousands of H-bombs? JFK. Who decided to drive in a convertible down the streets of Dallas, against the advice of the Secret Service? JFK. He died because he was terrible at his job, making ridiculous decisions. Unsurprising, he was also an adulterer, as was LBJ, who really screwed up Vietnam. I forgot that LBJ had a perfect opportunity to stop Nixon from being elected, since LBJ knew of Nixon's treason, but LBJ did nothing. LBJ was a fool, liar, coward, and blowhard, much like Trump.

I bet you didn't click on the link:
www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/08/06/nixon-vietnam-candidate-con
spired-with-foreign-power-win-election-215461

"The fact that it took nearly 50 years for Nixon’s secret to emerge also offers vital lessons for today. It shows how hard it is to find definitive proof of collaboration with a foreign power when officials are determined to hide the truth. It illustrates why a president might hesitate to call out such malfeasance by a candidate from the opposing political party. And it demonstrates the lengths an ambitious politician will go in the pursuit of power—even at the expense of his own country’s interests."

6ix, it is pretty unlikely you'd see the link between Nixon/Vietnam and Trump/Russia, but it is there. It is even more unlikely that you'd see the link between JFK's extraordinarily bad judgment as President/his adultery and Trump's extraordinarily bad judgment as President/his adultery. Adulterers, in my experience with employees, also have very poor judgment on their day-to-day job. The guys who can't keep their dick in their pants can't keep their mind on their job.

Besides adultery, there are other ways for a President to demonstrate he is not in command of himself. Do you remember Bush's alcoholism and cocaine abuse? I do. He was never again fully in control of himself. Unsurprisingly, his Presidential decisions reflected his lack of self-command. Dick Cheney could push Bush around to whatever felt best to Cheney.

Hey T., this is the stuff going on behind our backs so-to-speak. While the headlines chase Trump's mindless tweets, his admin is busy deregulating just about everything that holds big companies responsible and accountable.

He's showed himself to be more Pro Wealthy & Big Business than anything else so far - trillion $ tax cut for example. Another thing that makes the profile of his typical supporter so laughable.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/climate/trump-environment-rol
lbacks.html

83 Environmental Rules Being Rolled Back Under Trump

"President Trump has made eliminating federal regulations a priority. His administration, with help from Republicans in Congress, has often targeted environmental rules it sees as burdensome to the fossil fuel industry and other big businesses.

A New York Times analysis, based on research from Harvard Law School, Columbia Law School and other sources, counts more than 80 environmental rules and regulations on the way out under Mr. Trump.

Our list represents two types of policy changes: rules that were officially reversed and rollbacks still in progress. The Trump administration has released an aggressive schedule to try to finalize many of these rollbacks this year."

Just the first 40:

1. Canceled a requirement for oil and gas companies to report methane emissions.

2. Revised and partially repealed an Obama-era rule limiting methane emissions on public lands, including intentional venting and flaring from drilling operations.

3. Loosened a Clinton-era rule designed to limit toxic emissions from major industrial polluters.

4. Stopped enforcing a 2015 rule that prohibited the use of hydrofluorocarbons, powerful greenhouse gases, in air-conditioners and refrigerators.

5. Repealed a requirement that state and regional authorities track tailpipe emissions from vehicles traveling on federal highways.

6. Reverted to a weaker 2009 pollution permitting program for new power plants and expansions.

7. Amended rules that govern how refineries monitor pollution in surrounding communities.

8. Directed agencies to stop using an Obama-era calculation of the “social cost of carbon” that rulemakers used to estimate the long-term economic benefits of reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

9. Withdrew guidance that federal agencies include greenhouse gas emissions in environmental reviews. But several district courts have ruled that emissions must be included in such reviews.

10. Lifted a summertime ban on the use of E15, a gasoline blend made of 15 percent ethanol. (Burning gasoline with a higher concentration of ethanol in hot conditions increases smog.)

IN PROCESS
11. Proposed weakening Obama-era fuel-economy standards for cars and light trucks. The proposal also challenges California’s right to set its own more stringent standards, which other states can choose to follow.

12. Announced intent to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. (The process of withdrawing cannot be completed until 2020.)

13. Proposed repeal of the Clean Power Plan, which would have set strict limits on carbon emissions from coal- and gas-fired power plants. In April 2019, the E.P.A. sent a replacement plan, which would let states set their own rules, to the White House for budget review.

14. Proposed eliminating Obama-era restrictions that in effect required newly built coal power plants to capture carbon dioxide emissions.

15. Proposed a legal justification for weakening an Obama-era rule that limited mercury emissions from coal power plants.

16. Proposed revisions to standards for carbon dioxide emissions from new, modified and reconstructed power plants.

17. Began review of emissions rules for power plant start-ups, shutdowns and malfunctions. In April, the E.P.A. filed an order reversing a requirement that 36 states follow the emissions rule.

18. Proposed relaxing Obama-era requirements that companies monitor and repair methane leaks at oil and gas facilities.

19. Proposed changing rules aimed at cutting methane emissions from landfills. In May, 2019, a federal judge ruled against the E.P.A. for failing to enforce the existing law and gave the agency a fall deadline for finalizing state and federal rules. E.P.A. said it is reviewing the decision.

20. Announced a rewrite of an Obama-era rule meant to reduce air pollution in national parks and wilderness areas.

21. Weakened oversight of some state plans for reducing air pollution in national parks. (In Texas, the E.P.A. rejected an Obama-era plan that would have required the installation of equipment at some coal-burning power plants to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions.)

22. Proposed repealing leak-repair, maintenance and reporting requirements for large refrigeration and air conditioning systems containing hydrofluorocarbons.

Drilling and extraction
COMPLETED
23. Made significant cuts to the borders of two national monuments in Utah and recommended border and resource management changes to several more.

24. Rescinded water pollution regulations for fracking on federal and Indian lands.

25. Scrapped a proposed rule that required mines to prove they could pay to clean up future pollution.

26. Withdrew a requirement that Gulf oil rig owners prove they could cover the costs of removing rigs once they have stopped producing.

27. Approved construction of the Dakota Access pipeline less than a mile from the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. Under the Obama administration, the Army Corps of Engineers had said it would explore alternative routes.

28. Revoked an Obama-era executive order designed to preserve ocean, coastal and Great Lakes waters in favor of a policy focused on energy production and economic growth.

29. Changed how the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission considers the indirect effects of greenhouse gas emissions in environmental reviews of pipelines.

30. Permitted the use of seismic air guns for gas and oil exploration in the Atlantic Ocean. The practice, which can kill marine life and disrupt fisheries, was blocked under the Obama administration.

31. Loosened offshore drilling safety regulations implemented by the Obama administration following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. The revised rules include reduced testing requirements for blowout prevention systems.

IN PROCESS
32. Completed preliminary environmental reviews to clear the way for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

33. Proposed opening most of America’s coastal waters to offshore oil and gas drilling, but delayed the plan after a federal judge ruled that Mr. Trump’s reversal of an Obama-era ban on drilling in the Arctic Ocean was unlawlful.

34. Lifted an Obama-era freeze on new coal leases on public lands. But, in April 2019, a judge ruled that the Interior Department could not begin selling new leases without completing an environmental review. A month later, the agency published a draft assessment that concluded restarting federal coal leasing would have little environmental impact.

35. Repealed an Obama-era rule governing royalties for oil, gas and coal leases on federal lands, which replaced a 1980s rule that critics said allowed companies to underpay the federal government. A federal judge struck down the Trump administration’s repeal. The Interior Department is reviewing the decision.

36. Proposed “streamlining” the approval process for drilling for oil and gas in national forests.

37. Ordered review of regulations on oil and gas drilling in national parks where mineral rights are privately owned.

38. Recommended shrinking three marine protected areas, or opening them to commercial fishing.

39. Ordered review of regulations on offshore oil and gas exploration by floating vessels in the Arctic that were developed after a 2013 accident. The Interior Department said it was “considering full rescission or revision of this rule.”

40. Approved the Keystone XL pipeline rejected by President Barack Obama, but a federal judge blocked the project from going forward without an adequate environmental review process. Mr. Trump later attempted to side-step the ruling by issuing a presidential permit, but the project remains tied up in court.

WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (Reuters) - The Trump administration on Monday finalized changes to provisions of the U.S. Endangered Species Act it says will streamline the decades-old wildlife protection law but which conservation groups say will threaten at-risk species.

Mocked Abroad and Assailed at Home, Trump Returns to Face Impeachment

Mocked by peers behind his back at a NATO meeting in London, Mr. Trump abruptly canceled a news conference and bolted early, only to fly home to a capital in the throes of judging whether he is fit for office. After hobnobbing with the queen, the president now faces the daunting likelihood that by Christmas he will become the third president impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors.

If NATO is mocking Trump, Trump must have done something right.

When I think of NATO I think of a cluster of foreign powers, unelected by anyone in the US, with no US Constitutional authority, running US foreign policy in Europe, northern Africa, and beyond.

"NATO Names China As New Enemy, Alongside Russia"

Fuck NATO.

Trump threatens Iran after embassy attack, but remains reluctant to get more involved in region

President Trump on Tuesday was pulled toward the kind of Middle East tinderbox he has tried to avoid, as he blamed Iran for an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq that further damaged U.S. relations with Baghdad and appeared to put Trump’s hopes for diplomacy with Tehran further out of reach.

Sounds like everybody was in agreement that he was a piece of shit.

They attacked the Embassy first.

Quote:

Mr. Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to end American entanglements in the Middle East, insisted that he did not want war.

“I don’t think that would be a good idea for Iran. It wouldn’t last very long,” Mr. Trump said. “Do I want to? No. I want to have peace. I like peace.”

No president before has said something like that. GWB said it would basically be a never-ending campaign, which so far it has turned out to be. Obama ran partly on pulling us out of the wars, subsequently didn't, and even started a few new ones himself.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
