It's been 51 days since I filed my tax return and you can't even get a simple answer if they got it or not.

Last year, I filed several days later and already had my refund over two weeks ago.

Simple returns should be able to be filed online through the IRS's own website and not require you to give every single piece of personal information you have to some third party company. This year, the two big firms even opted out and the choices you're left with are some 3rd party companies you've never even heard of.

Even dipshit Elizabeth Warren agrees with me on that.

This country is going to hell under Biden*'s "leadership".

Yeah. They're one of the two big guys I referenced in the OP. H&R Block is the other one.

Turbo Tax is only going to be free for 7 more days, and they won't be free next year. I did my aunt's taxes using TT, and it's obscene. Something that takes me 15 minutes to do on paper ends up being a whole ordeal of around 80 different pages you have to go through, and every two or three of them popping up with the upsell trying to get you to pay for a package or to have one of their "professionals" help you.

Using TurboTax only solves one of the three problems here. You're still giving all of your personal info to a third party company and signing their agreements, and there is zero reason why you need to navigate so many pages when you're doing a simple 2 page return.

I was hoping that I'd be teaching my Aunt how to do her own now that I've finally got her online, but really by having her do everything with my guidance all I was doing was giving her more experience using her new laptop. I already let her know that next year we're going to use a different company to do it because she's not paying anyone to do a simple tax return.

And yes, I did let my Aunt know about all of my own personal reservations about online tax services, but she just wanted her return fast and didn't care about that. In retrospect, I'm glad we did it her way because I wouldn't want to be dealing with her worrying if they got her return or not for the next 6 months too.

I guess I'll also have an opportunity to teach her how to filter out emails since Turbo Tax will be battering her email with ads every year for the rest of her life to pay for their services now.

Yeah. I know. I also have an account with them that I can sign in and see more options other than just seeing the status of the return. That doesn't tell me anything either.

The problem with mailed returns is how they process them. You don't get any receipt that they received it and the status doesn't change until they are actually processing it.
