In Washington, Putin’s nuclear threats stir growing alarm | October 1, 2022

The New York Times reports:

For the first time since the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, top government leaders in Moscow are making explicit nuclear threats and officials in Washington are gaming out scenarios should President Vladimir V. Putin decide to use a tactical nuclear weapon to make up for the failings of Russian troops in Ukraine.

In a speech on Friday, Mr. Putin raised the prospect anew, calling the United States and NATO enemies seeking Russia’s collapse and declaring again that he would use “all available means” to defend Russian territory — which he has now declared includes four provinces of eastern Ukraine.

Mr. Putin reminded the world of President Harry S. Truman’s decision to drop atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, 77 years ago, adding, “By the way, they created a precedent.” On Saturday, the strongman leader of the southern Russian republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, said Mr. Putin should consider using “low-yield nuclear weapons” in Ukraine, becoming the first prominent Russian official to openly call for such a strike.

Senior American officials say they think the chances that Mr. Putin would employ a nuclear weapon remain low. They say they have seen no evidence that he is moving any of his nuclear assets, and a recent Pentagon analysis suggests the military benefits would be few. And the cost for Mr. Putin — in a furious international response, perhaps even from the Chinese, whose support he needs most — could be tremendous.

But they are far more worried about the possibility now than they were at the beginning of the Ukraine conflict in February. After a series of humiliating retreats, astoundingly high casualty rates and a deeply unpopular move to draft young Russian men into service, Mr. Putin clearly sees the threat of his nuclear arsenal as a way to instill fear, and perhaps to recover some respect for Russia’s power.

Most important, he may see the threat of unleashing part of his stockpile of roughly 2,000 so-called tactical nuclear weapons — lower-yield warheads usable in smaller bombs, short-range missiles or artillery rounds — as a way to extort concessions that he has been unable to win on the battlefield. Some Russian military analysts have suggested exploding a tactical weapon over a remote place like the Black Sea as a demonstration, or perhaps actually using one against a Ukrainian military base.

Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, writes:

The Russians now realize that they are losing the war they started. That’s why they are resorting to annexation and nuclear blackmail.

We know they are not bluffing. But we are not afraid. Nothing can scare us anymore. Ukrainians have seen large cities reduced to ruins. We’ve absorbed many forms of conventional and some forms of unconventional enemy fire. We’ve survived all kinds of torture. We’ve discovered mass graves everywhere the Russians put their boots. For us, this war is an existential fight, and we have no choice but to go on.

Our intelligence agencies assess the threat of Russia’s tactical nuclear-weapons use as “very high.” And Russia’s willingness to make nuclear threats presents a crisis not just for Ukraine, but for every country on Earth. The response to Russia’s nuclear blackmail must be fierce and unequivocal, rejecting the very idea of ?making concessions to a nuclear aggressor. Otherwise, every ambitious dictator will scramble to obtain nuclear weapons, and every responsible nonnuclear nation will seek to acquire nuclear weapons for self-defense. Nonproliferation agreements will be worthless. Nuclear wars, with their millions of casualties, will follow.

When something "bad" happens, such as Russia cuts exports of natural gas to Europe, it is an opportunity to make money, not to have a heart attack. The price of natural gas for export from Texas went up when Putin did that. See? Profit opportunity provided by Putin!

If the S&P 500 crashes because of a hurricane or a Russian nuke? Opportunity to buy stocks at a discount. Eventually, the stocks will rise again, assuming you are as optimistic as I am about America, despite Putin's nukes. If Hurricane Ian didn't kill you, it is an opportunity to make money in the bridge, road and home building businesses. Think of all those boats that will have to be replaced. It is a money making opportunity for boat sellers who are NOT having heart attacks.

You have pointed to another weird feature of Trumptard psychology: Trumptards imagine completely understanding what they absolutely do NOT understand in the slightest. That one weird feature kills Trumptards by knocking decades off their lives. If Trumptards smoke, shortening their life, that's fine with me because Trumptards are nuts. "Good riddance to bad rubbish." I don't get emotional every time a Trumptard ruins his life right before my eyes. If there was a way to make money from Trumptards getting emphysema, heart disease and lung cancer caused by smoking that would be great. Come to think of it, the medical establishment in America does make its money that way just as dentists make money from crooked teeth and cavities.

What about if Putin drops nukes? It means Putin is nuts and that Putin will be dying because of the consequence inside his own government. "Good riddance to bad rubbish" is the phrase to describe the death of Putin in the assassination plot set into motion by Putin nuking Ukraine. And don't forget about the profit opportunity when the stock market crashes because of Putin nuking Ukraine. Selling at a low price is only bad for sellers, but not bad for the buyers.

If Putin's extra, extra, super special operation - now fortified with even more poor Russian bastards - FAILS... what's he left with? I'm not sure about anyone taking him out. I put it at 50-50 Nukes v. Coup. And when I say "nukes" I mean he could just drop one on Kyiv and wait for the drama. His calculus has to be, "they won't do shit!" but I don't think he wants to start an all out war.

One possibility is for Russian warships on the Black Sea to be sunk by cruise missiles after a warning that the warships either leave or sink. It could be one warship per day until either all Russian ships have left or sunk. But then Putin may respond by torpedoing a liquid natural gas carrier per day en route from Texas to the EU. When dealing with highly defective people, whether Putin, Trump, or an East Texas Trumptard, the only certainty is they will demonstrate a lack of good-sense and, maybe, be destructive.

Have you seen the TV show Westworld? There are a lot of robots out there masquerading as humans, but you can tell they're not because their programming is ridiculous. If Putin or Trump were discovered to have been built for entertainment & nonstop drama rather than born, it would explain much about them.

The Ukrainian army is too dispersed for a tactical nuke to have much of an effect on the Ukrainian army tactically. But if Putin does use one watch NATO destroy Russia’s Black Sea fleet as well as any remnants of the Russian army within Ukraine; all of Ukraine. And you won’t have to wait for it. It’ll be quick and decisive.

NATO realizes China is watching. That North Korea and other dictators will be watching. NATO already knows it will have to be done.

Retired Gen. David Petraeus predicted Sunday that the U.S., along with NATO allies, would “take out” Russian forces if Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to use nuclear weapons in his war against neighboring Ukraine.

During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Petraeus told co-anchor Jonathan Karl that western powers have to take Russia’s nuclear weapons threats seriously, noting National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s recent remarks that US officials have warned the Moscow of “catastrophic consequences” if the Kremlin deploys nuclear weapons.

“And what would happen?” Karl asked.

“Well, again, I have deliberately not talked to Jake about this. I mean, just to give you a hypothetical, we would respond by leading a NATO, a collective effort, that would take out every Russian conventional force that we can see and identify on the battlefield in Ukraine and also in Crimea and every ship in the Black Sea,” Petraeus replied.

6ix, there is something seriously wrong with Russians: The first time the Russian soldiers caught him, they tossed him bound and blindfolded into a trench covered with wooden boards for days on end. Then they beat him, over and over: Legs, arms, a hammer to the knees, all accompanied by furious diatribes against Ukraine. Before they let him go, they took away his passport and Ukrainian military ID — all he had to prove his existence — and made sure he knew exactly how worthless his life was. “No one needs you,” the commander taunted. “We can shoot you any time, bury you a half-meter underground and that’s it.”

So, why are Russians, when you measure GDP per capita, poor compared to Finns in the country next door? It could well be because Russians' thinking leads them to torture prisoners. For a fact, the same brains make economic and military decisions so it is likely that malfunctioning brains arrive at inadequate decisions on all things. You might not be aware, but Finland did not waste time, money, or talent on building nuclear weapons while Russia and its protege nation North Korea lavishly squandered on nukes, making both countries poorer. Fools make bad decisions and Russians and North Koreans have made many bad decisions to arrive at where they are today.

North Korea only exists because Russia set it into motion at the end of WWII. South Korea, which fought very hard to not become part of Russia's ill-conceived design, has become very rich, compared to North Korea, despite being a very poor part of the Korean Peninsula at the time when Russia invaded to drive out the Japanese. That war left South Korea in ruins. Nowadays, South Korea has no nuclear weapons and it never threatens anyone with war. In contrast, North Korea threatens to nuke everybody who crosses Kim. Three generations of Kims learned that trick of international relationships from Russia, which daily threatens to nuke everybody who crosses Putin. How well has that worked for Russia?

Compare Russia with Finland. Finland fought very hard in three wars with Russia to not become part of Russia's ill-conceived design and, despite those highly destructive wars, Finland became very rich. The typical Finn is now four times richer than a Russian and Finland won for the fifth year in a row the title of World's Happiest Nation.

Russia threatened to nuke Finland if it joins NATO. When Turkey drops its objections to Finland joining NATO, we will see if Russia does nuke Finland. By the way, Turkey's President and Russia's Putin have some kind of secret deal which they don't discuss with news reporters. Is Putin bribing Turkey's President in order to keep Turkey from allowing Finland to join NATO? No one knows.

You are operating under the assumption we are having a conversation. We have never had one. I'd explain what a conversation is, but why bother? I don't have conversations with street people who have mental illnesses and I have never known anyone who voted for Trump multiple times who wasn't absolutely out of their minds, but Trumptards are as unaware of being crazy as a schizophrenic drunk on a street corner wandering around at random. To tell the truth, I knew you were crazy long before Trump ran for office. Signym is as crazy. Your only saving grace is that you two are highly articulate, much faster at composing sentences than I will ever be.

The diplomatic option consists in reminding key Russian leaders that should Moscow use nuclear weapons, it will soon see them sprouting in self-defense in Poland, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and quite likely Finland and other countries. That will not make Russia safer or stronger.

China has a stake in this, too: A world in which the nuclear taboo is broken is one in which Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea may feel that they need the security of their own nuclear deterrents. India, facing a Pakistan that may have more nuclear weapons than it does, and whose politics are terrifyingly unstable, has no interest in seeing nuclear use become acceptable. Those who can still talk to Moscow should be urged to convey that message to Russia’s leadership — if they are not, in fact, doing so already.

The fight in Ukraine is not, despite what some have said, an existential war for Russia. No one is claiming Russian territory, and no Ukrainian army is going to drive to Moscow. It may very well be an existential fight for Vladimir Putin as a leader and even as a human being, but that is a separate matter. He has not been put in a corner, but rather has put himself in one. For him to use nuclear weapons, many others — hundreds, if not more — have to go along. The United States and other countries probably have the means to communicate to each and every one of them that they will personally pay a price if they do so, if not at the hands of Ukraine’s friends, then under a successor regime in Russia that will have to hold them accountable in order to be readmitted to the economy of the developed world.

Kim Jong Un says North Korea's goal is for world's strongest nuclear force

By Josh Smith, 27/11/2022 - 12:35

SEOUL -North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country’s ultimate goal is to possess the world’s most powerful nuclear force, as he promoted dozens of military officers involved in the recent launch of North Korea’s largest ballistic missile, state media reported on Sunday.

The announcement comes after Kim inspected a test of the country’s new Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), and pledged to counter U.S. nuclear threats with nuclear weapons on Nov. 18.

Building the nuclear force is for reliably protecting the dignity and sovereignty of the state and the people, and “its ultimate goal is to possess the world’s most powerful strategic force, the absolute force unprecedented in the century,” Kim said in the order promoting the officers.

He called the Hwasong-17 the “world’s strongest strategic weapon” and said it demonstrated North Korea’s resolve and ability to eventually build the world’s strongest army.

North Korean scientists have made a “wonderful leap forward in the development of the technology of mounting nuclear warheads on ballistic missiles,” Kim said, without elaborating.

Posing for photos with the scientists, engineers, military officials and others involved in the test, Kim said he expects them to continue to expand and strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrent at an extraordinarily rapid pace.

Those workers issued an oath of allegiance and faith to the ruling party, vowing to defend the “absolute authority” of the party and Kim, and vowing that “our missiles will fly vigorously only in the direction indicated” by him.

They said Kim had “carefully taught us one by one” during the development of the Hwasong-17.

Capable of reaching the U.S. mainland, the missile launch prompted the United States to call for a United Nations Security Council presidential statement to hold North Korea accountable for its missile tests, which are banned by Security Council resolutions.

North Korea’s powerful Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly awarded the Hwasong-17 missile the title of “DPRK Hero and Gold Star Medal and Order of National Flag 1st Class”, KCNA reported in another statement, using the initials of the country’s official name, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“(The missile) clearly proved before the world that the DPRK is a full-fledged nuclear power capable of standing against the nuclear supremacy of the U.S. imperialists and fully demonstrated its might as the most powerful ICBM state,” KCNA said.

The test fire demonstrated that North Korea will react in kind to “the enemy’s nuke and full-frontal confrontation,” the report said.

South Koreans are rich while North Koreans are very poor. How did that disparity happen? Because North Korea has nukes so that it can't be forced to do anything South Korea did to become prosperous. It's in the press release that North Korea has nukes only because it doesn't want to be like South Korea, by which I mean it doesn't want to be successful.

Russia followed the exact same path, but the country it should be compared to is Finland, not South Korea, because Finland never had nukes and Finland went to war with Russia and won.

Finland named world's happiest country for fifth straight year.

If there was an international competition for being the biggest jackasses: Russia named world's stupidest bellicose country for the fifth straight year.

I don't care what happens to the angry poor white trash of the world, whether Russian or American or 6ixStringJack. The trashy people make violent threats, like Putin and Trump do, but they won't get what they want from prosperous people who know that if these mangy, trashy dogs are given a meal, they won't leave. They will want more and more and howl at the front door if they don't get fed. The only effective policy is to give angry poor white trash nothing, nothing at all.

Putin has the same history of making death threats against the US government as Trump does. Who believes Putin or Trump are serious?

Take Trump’s ‘Warning’ of Violence for What It Is — a Threat Seriously and Literally
The ex-president and his MAGA militias have made good on their promises to “fight like hell” before. You’d be a fool to believe they won’t do it again.

Trump’s Threats of Violence Are Too Dangerous to Disregard
As the various investigations around the former President close in on him, his campaign to discredit and intimidate his accusers will only intensify.
After all this time, the Donald Trump-outrage news cycle is as familiar as the soak-wash-rinse-repeat cycle on an old washing machine, but sometimes it seems to serve less purpose. However, even as exhaustion and cynicism dull the senses, the option of simply ignoring his utterances isn’t really viable, attractive as it may seem. He’s still too dangerous to disregard—a reality that his latest affront, a thinly veiled threat to Mitch McConnell coupled with a racist slur directed at McConnell’s spouse, Elaine Chao, makes all too clear.

BRUSSELS — Russia warned Finland and Sweden on Thursday that if they join NATO, Moscow will reinforce the Baltic Sea region, including with nuclear weapons.
The threat came a day after Finnish officials suggested that their country could request to join the 30-member military alliance within weeks and as Sweden mulled making a similar move.

Finland moves closer to joining NATO
Helsinki and Stockholm are officially nonaligned militarily, but they are reconsidering their status in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — leading to escalated warnings from Russia.
Dmitry Medvedev, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin who serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said Thursday that NATO expansion would lead Moscow to strengthen air, land and naval forces to “balance” military capability in the region.
“If Sweden and Finland join NATO, the length of the land borders of the alliance with the Russian Federation will more than double. Naturally, these boundaries will have to be strengthened,” he wrote on Telegram.

Sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine would be deemed a "nuclear" threat by Moscow, Sergei Lavrov warned in an interview broadcast on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

"We will consider the very fact that the Ukrainian armed forces have such systems as a threat from the West in the nuclear field," the Russian foreign minister said.

"Russia cannot ignore the ability of these devices to carry nuclear charges."

Lavrov noted he had warned the US, UK and EU states not to deliver F-16s.

"The United States and its NATO satellites are creating the risk of a direct armed confrontation with Russia and this risks having catastrophic consequences," he said.

Russia Bringing Nuclear War Survival Training to Schools

Updated Feb 06, 2024 at 10:40 AM EST

https://www.newsweek.com/russia-nuclear-war-training-schools-1867284

Russian officials, including former President Dmitry Medvedev, have warned on multiple occasions that a nuclear war could break out amid the conflict in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin said in September 2022 that Moscow was prepared to use nuclear weapons to defend its "territorial integrity" and the topic is regularly discussed on Russian state TV.

Russian high-school students will be trained how to protect themselves in a possible nuclear war as part of the national curriculum, a local publication has reported.

It is reminiscent of a Soviet-era basic military training course that was taught in schools and was abolished in 1993.

Sergey Mironov, the head of A Just Russia party, told Russian media in November 2022 that rolling out such a course "would systematically prepare citizens for a possible confrontation with the enemy."

Nuclear rhetoric has been prominent throughout the war in Ukraine. Kremlin propagandists have routinely warned of a looming world war and strikes by Russia on NATO territory over aid and weapons provided by President Joe Biden's administration and members of the military alliance to Kyiv.

Last week, Russian state TV host Vladimir Solovyov, one of the most-prominent figures in Kremlin-backed media, suggested moving to a nuclear war on his radio show Full Contact and floated the idea of striking the headquarters of the NATO military alliance in Brussels, Belgium.
