It’s Time to Prepare for a Ukrainian Victory

The liberation of Russian-occupied territory might bring down Vladimir Putin.

To be clear: This is not a prediction; it’s a warning. Many things about the current Russian political system are strange, and one of the strangest is the total absence of a mechanism for succession. Not only do we have no idea who would or could replace Putin; we have no idea who would or could choose that person.

In the Soviet Union there was a Politburo, a group of people that could theoretically make such a decision, and very occasionally did. By contrast, there is no transition mechanism in Russia. There is no dauphin. Putin has refused even to allow Russians to contemplate an alternative to his seedy and corrupt brand of kleptocratic power.

Nevertheless, I repeat: It is inconceivable that Putin can continue to rule if the centerpiece of his claim to legitimacy — his promise to put the Soviet Union back together again — proves not just impossible but laughable.

That mechanism has never been tested when the previous ruler was alive and didn't want to leave power but it is no different than the mechanism in North Korea (The Democratic People's Republic of Korea). Funny thing about North Korea where the old ruler dies in office and his son always takes over, I mean Democratically elected son takes over.

I sure hope Russia doesn't copy this other mechanism from North Korea: North Korea will ‘automatically’ launch nukes if Kim killed -- 09/09/2022.
It could get messy if Putin dies and Russia ‘automatically’ nukes Kyiv.

Russian industry must be malfunctioning because Russia is purchasing millions of rockets and artillery shells from North Korea for use in the Ukraine conflict. Either that or their artillery crews can't hit the broadside of a barn from inside the barn. Perhaps it is pure luck when Russian artillery hits what it is aiming for. Why fire one shell to hit the target when you can fire a thousand shells where 999 miss? The missing 999 shells will land somewhere (kindergarten or playground or school or hospital or orphanage) in Ukraine, so the Russians would call it a 100% effective barrage.

Signym, you started an entirely new thread that is one line after another of corrosive cynicism here: http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=65277

There is a whole website for Signym-esque cranky cynics here: https://councilforthenationalinterest.org

Another website (with exactly the article Signym was bitching about) for the same audience:

What I am saying, Signym, is that you are full of shit and you handle the smell from your personal hygiene problem by saying it is not you stinking, it is everybody that points out that you are made of waste products.

I'd be delighted if Putin's psychopathology ended. 09:38, 14 Sep 2022 - Vladimir Putin could order nuclear strikes at strategic sites in Ukraine in response to a series of crushing defeats on the battlefield, according to a former NATO chief.

The alliance's ex-deputy secretary general hailed Ukraine's territorial gains while warning their counteroffensive in Kharkiv could lead to the despot deploying weapons of mass destruction to save face.

Speaking with the BBC, Rose Gottemoeller said she feared "they [ Russia ] will strike back now in really unpredictable ways that may even involve weapons of mass destruction."

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/putin-order-nuke-strike-aveng

"We've seen him (Putin) do this time and time again. At no point has Russia been under threat from NATO, has Russia been under threat from Ukraine. This is all a pattern from President Putin and we're going to stand up to it. We have the ability to defend ourselves, but we also need to call out what we're seeing here from President Putin," Psaki said in comments to ABC.

I think you've got it bassakwards as usual, SECOND, THUGR, and JAYNZE.

Russia's Security Council drives policy, NOT Putin.

The scope of Russia's invasion of Ukraine is - still- a "Special Military Operation", NOT full-on war. That means Russia is being parsimonious with deploying troops in Ukraine: most of the infantry fighting is being done by the LDNR (the combined militias of Luhansk and Donetsk). That's why the Kharkiv oblast was lightly defended: neither Russia nor the LDNR committed more than a tripwire force there. Kiev sent their forces out into the open for that offensive, and the tripwire did what it was supposed to do: stall the offensive for a few days before being evacuated so that artillery and air forces could be brought to bear. Kiev lost somwhere in the realm of 2000 KIA and (by the usual 3:1 calculation) 6000 wounded in taking a militarily irrelevent (from a Russian POV) region, while combined Russian and LDNR forces lost almost no one.

Commentators who are panicking have forgotten what they've been pounding on since the beginning:

The real fighting is in the Donbas (and now in Kherson too), and

Russia's goal is to destroy Kiev's military and kill Kiev soldiers, NOT take and hold territory. I believe that is called "manuever warfare" and what you saw was "maneuver defesne", executed brilliantly.

The best comparison is, still, Russia's action in Syria. In that case, lots of air support and training but not much troop involvement, and at a VERY slow grind. If you recall, Russia's first action was to degrade ISIS by hitting those oil tanker convoys heading into Turkey, where ISIS was going to make $$$.

Many Russians, including high-ranking public figures, want to blitz Ukraine NOW. PUTIN IS A MODERATING FORCE. PEOPLE ARE UPSET WITH HIM NOT BC OF THE "SMO" IN UKRAINE BUT BC IT'S TOO CAUTIOUS.

*****

People here in the west are afraid that we're on the rbink of WW3.

WHAT THEY DON'T REALIZE IS THAT WW3 HAS ALREADY BEGUN.

Remember, step 1 of warfare is sanctions and embargoes. We've been there and done that.

I don't think anyone in Russia's Security Council was ever under any illusion that this was "Russia v Ukraine".

It was always going to be "Russia v the Collective West", and not by Russia's choosing.

Right now, the west is trying to crank up problems in Serbia, Georgia, Armenia, Syria, Taiwan and who-knows-where-else (the M$M certainly isn't going to tell us!) hoping to throw so much chaff at Russia and its allies to overwhelm Russia's military and economy. We - the collective west - are aiming for "all chaos, all the time". And we - the collective west- are getting sucked further and further into supporting Ukraine no matter what the long term consequences for us and the world.

I have no idea what Russia's Security Council calculations are. Unlike us, I believe they want to avoid full-on global hot warfare. I see something of a horse race between actual military status (which IMHO Russia is winning, slowly) and our economic and political ability to wage war (which is declining, maybe more rapidy).

But if anyone resorts to nuclear holocaust it's going to be us.

Putin can stay in office for more consecutive terms IF he's re-elected.
And I don't know if your knowledge has advanced since 1989, but, yes, Russia has had multiparty elections since 1993, and Russia has had SEVEN political parties represented in their Parliament. A lot more than our four (Dems, Repubs, one Libertarian who caucases with Repubs and one Independent who caucases with Dems).

Russia's 'catastrophic' missing men problem

Where have all the flowers gone?" asks the famous 1960s antiwar song. In Moscow today, The New York Times reports, the question is: Where have all the men gone?

The answer to both questions is, in part, the same: To the graveyards of soldiers. But a lot of the missing men of Moscow have also fled Russian President Vladimir Putin's draft for his war in Ukraine. In fact, demographers say Russia may not recover for generations, if ever.

Bondarev served as a Russian diplomat for 20 years, according to Foreign Affairs, but quit his role in Russia's mission to the United Nations (U.N.) in May over Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He said in a resignation letter that the war is "not only a crime against the Ukrainian people, but also, perhaps, the most serious crime against the people of Russia."

In an interview with Sky News last month, Bondarev said that he believes Putin's "political survival" depends on the outcome of the Ukraine war.

"You have to understand that, if he loses the war, it will be the end for him," Bondarev said.

You could say the same of NATO. In fact, Stoltenberg HAS said the same of NATO.

So here we have two behemoth nuclear powers in an existential fight...or at least, what some claim is an existential fight

Which one is gonna reach for nukes first? Bc then, it becomes existential for ALL of us.

Putin is destroying Ukraine's electric grid because his life depends on winning, but nobody has yet begun destroying Russia's grid. And then there is the real estate that Russia has destroyed inside Ukraine, but Ukraine is not destroying Russian real estate because Biden will NOT supply the weapons needed. It is a very asymmetric war when one side holds back while the Russian side does not.

Denied ATACMS, Ukraine Says It Is Developing Its 1000 Km Long-Range Weapon To Strike Russia. The distance from the center of Moscow to the Russian-Ukrainian border is about 450 km.
CNN reported last month that the US was not likely to provide the Ukrainian military with ‘deadly’ ATACMS anytime soon, a system that Kyiv has been requesting for months. The GMLRS rockets currently employed by the Ukrainian military have a maximum range of 84 kilometers, while the ATACMS can hit targets up to 300 kilometers away. With such long-range strike capability, Ukraine can destroy many valuable targets inside Russia. The Biden administration believes that providing ATACMS to Ukraine would be “extremely escalatory.”

How do you suppose anyone could do this?

Russia has excellent air defenses and their cyber systems are probably hardened.
Sure, Britain blew up 2 of 3 Russian pipelines, but that was outside Russian territory.

Do you have a source for your confidence? Until defenses have been tested by hostilities, for example by Ukrainians who have a strong motivation to prove the Russians are full of hot air, it is all salesmanship and empty promises by the Russian manufacturer.

THE S-400 MYTH: WHY RUSSIA’S AIR DEFENSE PROWESS IS EXAGGERATED
Alex Hollings | July 21, 2022

Russia’s S-400 Triumf, often referred to as the SA-21 Growler within NATO circles, is widely touted as one of — if not the — most capable air defense systems in the world. With the ability to leverage a variety of missiles to engage different air threats, an engagement range of nearly 250 miles, and widely praised counter-stealth capabilities, the S-400 has gained a reputation as one of the few systems capable of countering America’s air-dominance approach to warfare.

But is the S-400’s fearsome reputation really deserved, or is it just another Russian weapon system that benefits from the Kremlin’s well-established knack for media manipulation in the interest of furthering foreign weapons sales?

Russia has been intentionally opaque about the S-400’s history in testing and in the few situations where the S-400 has found itself in real combat conditions, its performance has prompted more questions than answers.

Russian air defense are constantly being tested by Ukrainian missiles, jets, and drones. They have a lot more than the S-400, including the Pantsir.

Lack of success is why Kiev resorted to sabotaging the Kerch Strait bridge with a truck bomb.

If Ukraine could, I'm sure it would strike Russian troop and weapons concentrations, but they can't. Despite your wishful thinking.

Putin is spooked by Ukraine. How do I know? Putin has signed a law to conscript citizens with unexpunged or outstanding convictions for murder, robbery, larceny, and drug trafficking, all of who were previously forbidden to serve. These are NOT people who add to an Army. They are a subtraction, but there are worse people who are a bigger loss. Putin will not conscript criminals who committed:

Sex crimes against minors,
treason,
spying,
terrorism,
those convicted of the attempted assassination of a government official,
hijacking an aircraft,
extremist activity,
illegal handling of nuclear materials and radioactive substances.

The sad day may come when all Russian criminals can be conscripted, no matter what crime.
