On Eve of Trial, Discovery of Carlson Texts Set Off Crisis Atop Fox

Private messages sent by Mr. Carlson that had been redacted in legal filings showed him making highly offensive and crude remarks that went beyond the inflammatory, often racist comments of his prime-time show and anything disclosed in the lead-up to the trial.

Despite the fact that Fox’s trial lawyers had these messages for months, the board and some senior executives were now learning about their details for the first time, setting off a crisis at the highest level of the company, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions.

The discovery added pressure on the Fox leadership as it sought to find a way to avoid a trial where Mr. Carlson — not to mention so many others at the network — would be questioned about the contents of the private messages they exchanged in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

Two days after the board’s discovery, Fox settled that case for $787.5 million, believed to be the highest for a defamation trial.

Several people with knowledge of Fox’s discussions said the redacted messages were a catalyst for one of the most momentous decisions Fox and its leaders — the father-son team of Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch — had made in years: to sever ties with the host of their highest-rated and highly profitable prime-time program and a face of the network in the Trump era.

The company dismissed him on Monday, with a phone call from Suzanne Scott, the chief executive of Fox News Media.

In the end, according to one of the people with knowledge of the internal discussions, Lachlan Murdoch viewed forcing out Mr. Carlson as a “business decision,” just as he did the Dominion settlement.

The Ejection of Tucker Carlson Is a Classic “Reverse Ferret” by Rupert Murdoch

It’s been a lifetime since Fox News offloaded Tucker Carlson, and when I say a lifetime, I mean six days.

It feels like forever thanks to the exhausting velocity of theories that seek to explain the downfall of cable television’s most famous host and racist. Carlson was fired because of the Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit. Carlson was fired because he used the C-word. Carlson was fired because he prayed too much. Carlson was fired because even his colleagues at Fox despised him.

That’s just a partial list of the best guesses circulating in the media ether. While Carlson was probably felled by more than a single factor, these guesses are akin to the trees that obscure the proverbial forest. Rupert Murdoch, who founded Fox News, did what he often does at a moment of crisis, swiveling 180 degrees to secure his business empire. The move is famous enough to have an unusual name in Britain, where Murdoch first came to global prominence: the reverse ferret.

In the 1980s, Kelvin MacKenzie was the editor of Murdoch’s London tabloid The Sun, and he loved to describe his spiciest stories as putting a ferret down the pants of whichever celebrity or politician was targeted. But when a story turned out to be wrong or legally actionable, as often happened, MacKenzie burst out of his office and shouted to the newsroom, “Reverse ferret! Reverse ferret!” That meant one thing: The paper had to climb down immediately. After a string of fabricated stories about Elton John in 1988, for instance, The Sun paid the singer 1 million pounds and printed a headline on its front page that said, “SORRY ELTON.”

One of the sharpest Murdoch watchers, the Australian investigative journalist Neil Chenoweth, connected MacKenzie’s antics to his billionaire proprietor. “Rupert Murdoch’s entire business style may be characterized as a reverse ferret,” Chenoweth wrote more than 20 years ago. “Time and again when his plans have gone awry and he has found himself facing calamity, his superb survival skills have saved him. Just before he hits the wall, he does a little dummy, he feints this way and that, and then he sets off with undiminished speed in a new direction.” For instance, the right-wing Murdoch unexpectedly threw The Sun’s support to the Labor Party and Tony Blair in 1997, reportedly because then-Prime Minister John Major refused to back policies that Murdoch had pressed him on.

That kind of out-of-the-blue abandonment is basically what happened with Carlson, Fox’s biggest star and the pride and joy of not just Rupert Murdoch but also his son Lachlan, who runs the network on a daily basis. Both Murdochs had unusually close relationships with their favorite host — Carlson even dined with Rupert at the 92-year-old’s estate in Bel Air just a few weeks ago — until, all of a sudden, they didn’t. Carlson learned just a few minutes before the rest of us that his services were no longer required at Fox News.

This occurred a few days after another big reversal: Fox’s decision to pay $787.5 million in damages to Dominion for wrongfully reporting that its machines took votes away from then-President Donald Trump in 2020. The stop-the-steal ferret placed in America’s pants by Carlson and other Fox hosts, such as Maria Bartiromo and Lou Dobbs, was suddenly extracted, and while it was major news across the country, Fox hardly mentioned it, just as the network said almost nothing about Carlson’s exit. The properly executed reverse ferret denies its own existence.

The philosophy behind this maneuver helps answer another question: What’s next for Fox? The consensus, expressed by journalist Brian Stelter, is that the Murdochs have learned to never again let a host become as extreme and beyond their control as Carlson. The Murdochs have a line of allowed mendacity, Stelter explained this week, and Carlson crossed it all the time; whoever replaces him will understand that you do not cross the line. Stelter, who is now working on his second book about Fox News, added, “I would like to believe that maybe Rupert Murdoch wants to drag his network back to a more reality-based place.”

That would defy the imperative of the reverse ferret. Glenn Beck got too wild and was reverse ferreted more than a decade ago. As NPR reported in 2011, “At long last, we have an answer to the enduring question: Is it possible for someone to be too incendiary, even for the Fox News channel?” Bill O’Reilly took Beck’s place as the network’s headliner, and when he eventually went too far (by sexually harassing women), he too was gone. Now, it’s Tucker Carlson’s turn. Throughout it all, Fox has made piles of money, billions and billions of dollars, far more than its rivals.

The lucrative dialectic of the ferret/reverse ferret is the spring mechanism for Murdoch’s business success. That’s because the kind of right-wing propaganda that makes the greatest amount of money is not reality-based; it’s how we got birtherism, the war on Christmas, Seth Rich, ivermectin, the “great replacement theory,” and election denialism. Walking up to the edge of what might destroy them, and doing an about-face that might involve paying off an aggrieved party, is not a mistake but a business strategy.

It is magical thinking to believe that Rupert and Lachlan have any interest in abandoning a strategy that constitutes their DNA. The Murdochs will not save us from the Murdochs.

Suspicious votes

“In office, O’Daniel dropped the bait and switched,” historian T.R. Fehrenbach noted in his classic history of Texas, “Lone Star.” The people’s governor unveiled a tax plan, secretly written by oil-industry allies and big business, that amounted to multiple sales taxes on the rural and working-class Texans who idolized him. His pension plan fizzled, mainly because it would bankrupt the state.

Pappy may have been the worst senator Texans ever sent to Washington. The reactionary Democrat did little but rail against communism, labor unions and desegregation.

In the fall of 1947, President Harry Truman suggested restoring wartime price controls to curb inflation. O’Daniel roared that the president had recommended “radical Communistic opiates as a cure for the dire consequences of 14 years of New Deal delirium tremens.” Another postwar initiative, the Veterans Housing program, was “communistic.” When a French ship that was docked at Texas City exploded, killing at least 581 people, the junior senator from Texas suggested that a communist conspiracy plotted the disaster.

Elected to a full term in 1942, O’Daniel became so extreme that fellow senators shunned him for the next six years. Choosing not to run for reelection — a 7 percent approval rating was persuasive — he returned to Texas having passed not one piece of legislation. Before leaving Washington, though, he held a press conference to introduce a newly compiled list of “communistic” laws and government agencies. Heading the list was the 1936 Rural Electrification Act, monumental legislation that brought long-delayed electricity to those farmers and ranchers who idolized “Pass the Biscuits, Pappy” O’Daniel.

“That’s Pappy O’Daniel,” my dad said, perhaps remembering when thousands of rapturous supporters had gathered at that exact spot years earlier. After the old man finished and folks applauded, I watched him being helped down from the wagon. He disappeared into the darkness.

The sun still shines on Carlson. Despite mounting evidence that he may have flown too close to Ol’ Sol during his heady days at Fox, he still has his followers. Maybe they’ll clamor for him to be Donald Trump’s running mate. Maybe he could move to Texas and run for governor when the current Mansion occupant goes off to pursue his own White House dreams.

If something like that happens, take it from one who stood staring up at “Pass the Biscuits Pappy” O’Daniel one evening long ago. Caveat emptor, my friends. Let the buyer beware.

Jesse Watters’ show also saw a decline. For Wednesday, it saw an audience of 1.558 million, but a week prior, it generated 2.1 million.

Former President Donald Trump criticized Fox Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch after his company agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems.

During a "fireside chat" with podcaster Steve Bannon, Trump complained Sunday that the government had been "weaponized" against conservatives.

"Well, even as a politician, they've weaponized, you would know this very well, they've weaponized the Justice Department, they've weaponized the FBI," he told Bannon. "They're doing things that a communist country would do; a Marxist country would do."

"What's going on is sick," he continued. "And what they do is they're unbelievable at cheating on elections."

Trump then took a shot at Fox News for refusing to report on his claims about the 2020 election following lawsuits from Dominion and Smartmatic.

"With you, I don't have to worry about saying that because if you say that on Fox, they want to cut you out," he opined. "They cheated on elections. Had Rupert Murdoch backed his people, he wouldn't have had any liability."

"But when he went out and said there was nothing wrong with this election, what a thing to say," he added.

Trump suggested that the FBI suppressed information about Hunter Biden's laptop on Twitter and Facebook to steal the election.

"They told them what to say, and they said, don't talk about the laptop," he recalled. "I always think, what do you think Putin is saying when every week they came up with another thing, Russia, Russia, Russia? They never blamed anything on China because they were all getting rich from China."

Inside the ‘Death Match’ that Helped Doom Tucker Carlson at Fox

The host tried to get a top executive canned. It backfired spectacularly.

In the spring of 2020, Tucker Carlson went to war with one of Fox News’ most powerful figures.

Carlson had grown so furious with Fox’s communications and PR chief, Irena Briganti, that he attempted to get her fired, people familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone. Briganti, formerly a key lieutenant to the late, disgraced Fox News mastermind Roger Ailes, had been an influential figure in the cable-news industry for years, as an infamously aggressive enforcer within Fox’s public-relations apparatus.

But after years of mutual antipathy between the executive and the high-profile host, Carlson attempted to force her out. The sources say Carlson made his case to Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott, Fox’s chief legal officer Viet Dinh, Murdoch family heir and Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch, and even other Fox News personalities such as Sean Hannity.

In pleading his case, Carlson argued Briganti spent too much time badgering on-air talent and the channel’s personnel; that she was generally incompetent and mean-spirited; and that she regularly engaged in dirty tricks against him and other hosts and contributors, when her job was ostensibly to protect them. One current Fox source with knowledge of the matter described the Carlson-Briganti feud as an intra-network “death match.”

“I do know that he was telling [Fox executives] that [Briganti] should be fucking fired,” a former Fox News commentator tells Rolling Stone. “She’s terrible. He was very bold there.”

But despite Carlson’s high ratings, influence in Republican political circles, and hyper-devoted fan base, he lacked the juice to oust Briganti. Her ties to other top executives were too tight for Carlson to overcome. In some cases, executives laughed off Carlson’s attempt to get Briganti fired, assuring him and others that Briganti was not going anywhere anytime soon.

Word of Carlson’s attempt to get her fired got back to Briganti, exacerbating an already terrible relationship. Briganti “hates all the talent,” the former Fox News commentator says. “She was so disgusted by the level of fucked up idiots who work there, in her opinion, and had to clean up their messes and their overblown egos.”

More importantly for Carlson, the failed attempt to oust Briganti helped erode his goodwill among the Fox News executive class.

“He really thought he was going to make a change, and I kind of shook my head,” says a different former Fox News talent. “It was such a terrible idea. It was such a clear suicide mission … But then again at the time I guess he thought he was big enough to do anything.”

Carlson wasn’t, and last month, he was forced out of Fox News, shocking the political media ecosystem and, within Fox, marking a decisive victory for Briganti.

Dominion made Tucker Carlson’s firing a condition of settlement with Fox, according to board member

Variety reports:

The mystery surrounding Tucker Carlson’s ouster from the airwaves at Fox News — and his future plans in media — are coming into sharper focus.

On April 26, Carlson spoke by phone with one of Fox Corp.’s eight board members, who told the host that his recent benching was a condition of Fox News’ settlement with Dominion Voting Systems, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the conversation.

The unnamed board member told Carlson that the condition does not appear in any of the settlement’s documents, and instead was a verbal agreement. If Fox didn’t comply, the settlement was off, Carlson was told. Dominion had plenty of leverage given that the $787.5 million deal to settle Dominion’s defamation suit against the network wouldn’t officially close until late-May.

If Dominion opted to blow up the deal, Fox would return to square one on settlement talks or potentially subject the Murdoch family empire to a jury trial that would undoubtedly expose more embarrassing details about the operation of Fox News and fallout from its 2020 president election coverage. Unlike Sean Hannity, Jeanine Pirro and Maria Bartiromo, Carlson wasn’t a key player in the suit that claimed Fox News repeatedly and knowingly aired false claims about the company with regards to the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

But Dominion was looking for the best way to maim the conservative news network, and forcing Fox News to cut ties with the most-watched personality in cable news would deal a potentially insurmountable blow and lead to a viewer exodus, according to Carlson’s understanding.

“That condition was intended to hurt Fox, and Tucker is just collateral damage,” says a source familiar with the matter. “Dominion wanted to punish Fox, and it’s working.”

I barely watch Tucker and pay almost no attention to news about entertainment and the media, and even I know that Tucker's was the most popular show, by far, on cable. Yeah. Ted doesn't live in reality.

Carlson had the most watched cable "news" show and was one of the very few cable "news" anchors that got more viewers than most independent YouTube news channels.

I mean, I guess he has zero viewers at the moment since he doesn't have a show, but he's going to end up with more viewers everyday once he figures out what his next step is going to be.

FOX Corp shares were down yesterday to a market cap loss of $507 Million. Rumble shares were up 6%, just based off the possibility that Carlson might go there.
