That was obvious to anybody paying attention.

If you can't find it on Google, just search on Yahoo or Bing. If you still can't find it there, go to DogPile, DuckDuckGo or install the TOR browser.

If whatever your searching for isn't part of the Leftoid bullshit narrative or something completely unrelated to politics, you won't find it on Google.

Oh, Elon. When Musk can't even bring himself to promise something, it hasn't even reached the "draw a picture on a napkin and yell at an engineer to make it happen" stage.

Today's big Tesla "INVESTOR DAY" presentation was 4 hours of argle-bargle:

Tesla Inc. shares dropped more than 5% in the extended session Wednesday after the electric-vehicle maker teased a “next generation” electric vehicle platform but stopped short of unveiling many details in a much-hyped event.

At the end of a four-hour investor day presentation, Chief Executive Elon Musk sidestepped a question that sought details about the new vehicles’ performance and looks, the prototype timeline, and whether Tesla would start making them at an existing factory before moving production to its future Mexico factory, as it intends to do.

Working the type of jobs I've worked half my working life, I've worked with more minorities than most white folk. Plenty of fine black folks out there.

A lot of them are racist cunts too. I don't run into too many of those types since most of them don't have jobs and couldn't hold one down if one was given to them anyhow.

Elon Musk thinks we’re close to solving AI. That doesn’t make it true.

What he gets right — and very wrong — about AI, from driverless cars to ChatGPT.

An awful lot of what he says about AI has been wrong. Most notoriously, none of his forecasts about timelines for self-driving cars have been correct. In October 2016, he predicted that a Tesla would drive itself from California to New York by 2017. (It didn’t.) Tesla has deployed a technology called “Autopilot,” but everybody in the industry knows that name is a fib, more marketing than reality. Teslas are nowhere close to being able to drive themselves; the software is still so buggy seven years after Tesla started rolling it out that a human driver still must pay attention at all times.

Musk also seems to consistently misunderstand the relationship between natural (human) intelligence and artificial intelligence. He’s repeatedly argued that Teslas don’t need Lidar — a sensing system that virtually every other autonomous vehicle company relies on — on the basis of a misleading comparison between human vision and cameras in driverless cars. While it’s true that humans don’t need Lidar to drive, current AI doesn’t seem anywhere close enough to being able to understand and deal with a full array of road conditions without it. Driverless cars need Lidar as a crutch precisely because they don’t have human-like intelligence.

Teslas can’t even consistently avoid crashing into stopped emergency vehicles, a problem that the company has failed to solve for more than five years. For reasons still not publicly disclosed, the perceptual and decision-making systems for the cars haven’t managed to drive with sufficient reliability yet, without human intervention.

ChatGPT isn’t the profound AI advance that it seems

Despite a spotty track record, Musk continues to make pronouncements about AI, and when he does, people take it seriously. His latest, first reported by CNBC and picked up widely thereafter, took place a few weeks ago at the World Government Summit in Dubai. Some of what Musk said is, in my professional judgment, spot-on — and some of it is way off.

What was most wrong was his implication that we are close to solving AI — or reaching so-called “artificial general intelligence” (AGI) with the flexibility of human intelligence — claiming that ChatGPT “has illustrated to people just how advanced AI has become.”

That’s just silly. To some people, especially those who haven’t been following the AI field, the degree to which ChatGPT can mimic human prose seems deeply surprising. But it’s also deeply flawed. A truly superintelligent AI would be able to tell true from false, to reason about people and objects and science, and to be as versatile and quick in learning new things as humans are — none of which the current generation of chatbots is capable of. All ChatGPT can do is predict text that might be plausible in different contexts based on the enormous body of written work it’s been trained on, but it has no regard for whether what it spits out is true. (Same as Musk.)

You remember the past differently than I do. That is unsurprising since Musk and Trumptards have memory dysfunction, especially about their own pasts. When they tell me their histories, where we both were at the same place at the same time, they are always the steadfast heroes, not the confused chickens running in circles squawking they actually were.

Elon Musk looked damn stupid when he found out the disabled guy he's just fired and publicly called a faking, lazy, workshy layabout sold his design company to Twitter with a proviso that if he was ever fired by Twitter, it would have to pay him the total buyout fee for his company of $100 million. The deal was structured to pay the maximum payroll taxes (long story) to Iceland, but Musk understood nothing, nothing at all.

The guy who will get $100 million from Musk because Musk didn't read the "Do NOT Fire" List that Twitter management left for him wrote about why Musk needs a bodyguard:

Halli @iamharaldur
I read you can't go to the toilet on your own either @elonmusk I'm sorry to hear about that. I know the feeling. The only difference is I can't do it because of a physical disability and you're afraid someone you hurt will attack you while you poop.

https://twitter.com/iamharaldur/status/1633086380254298113

Just in case you don't understand why Musk is a bad manager, the reason is he gives orders without thinking. At Tesla, Musk gets ignored when he gives an order because the engineers running the company know that Musk has a short attention span. The engineers have learned the hard way about disasters Musk causes if they immediately do what he says as if Musk knew and would remember what he ordered done. Same thing at SpaceX. Both companies, once they got his money, run well without Musk because he was never more than a bag of money who the engineers could trick so that they can run the businesses the way they want, not the way Musk wants. Typical money bag investors aren't as easy to fool as Musk, who is this generation's Howard Hughes, the crazy man who died rich because he was too crazy to screw up the companies he owned.

Elon Musk: Capitol rioter QAnon Shaman must be freed from prison

The US Capitol rioter known as QAnon Shaman should be freed from prison, Elon Musk said in a Friday night tweet, arguing that the convicted criminal was "falsely portrayed" in the media.

Despite Musk's claims of Chansley's false portrayal, the QAnon Shaman plead guilty in September 2021 to obstructing an official proceeding when he and thousands of others stormed the building to try to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's election.

"The hardest part of this is that I know I am to blame," Chansley said in a lengthy statement before he was sentenced, describing a difficult childhood and saying he had taken responsibility for his behavior. Musk is irresponsible because of a difficult adulthood.

The guy declared himself guilty in front of a judge. 6ix, that means the guy can't later say that he falsely declared himself guilty. "Your honor, I committed perjury when I said I was guilty. Lock me up for perjury, not for interfering with Congress." No judge will listen to this nutjob. I guess he could sue his own lawyer for malpractice by not declaring his client insane, but he can't sue the US government for wrongful imprisonment.

Thanks to Musk, stick a fork in Twitter; it’s done

https://twitter.com/fmanjoo/status/1646868215052779520

About six months ago, Elon Musk bought your favorite neighborhood bar. Then he fired veteran bouncers and bartenders, tried to stiff the landlord and at least one vendor, and demanded that regulars pay a cover charge. He’s frequently struggled to serve his customers, yet he’s penalized them for mentioning the competition. He’s tamped down the revelry in general, really — a lot of conversation at his watering hole has been drowned out by Musk’s own never-ending stage act, which consists mainly of him yelling dad jokes at customers through a bullhorn.

Pour one out for Twitter, then. I’d been open to Musk’s purchase of the social network, but half a year in, it’s been an unmitigated disaster. Musk moved fast and broke nearly everything — the speed and totality with which he’s ruined the site has been almost impressive. By Musk’s own reckoning, the company is now worth less than half of what he paid for it. It has lost many large advertisers, most of its employees and, with them, much of its functionality.

More than that, Twitter under Musk appears to have lost the thing that made it impossible to quit: Its centrality. The site was once the most consequential place online, not just a disseminator of breaking news and commentary, but something like an arbiter. At its cultural peak, from about 2015 to perhaps 2020, what people talked about on Twitter seemed to set the agenda for discussions elsewhere. Even last year, it still mattered: After years of mismanagement and glacial innovation, Twitter, on the eve of Musk’s reign, was still the one place to visit when anything big happened anywhere.

Whatever Twitter is now, it is no longer that venue. Cultural relevance is difficult to quantify, but you know it when you feel it. And now, when something’s going down, Twitter rarely feels like the place where everyone is gathering to watch.

I noticed this when Donald Trump was arraigned. Trump, the most powerful tweeter the world has ever known, a man whose every typo could send Twitter into paroxysms of easy dunks, appeared in court and Twitter was, as Vox’s Shirin Ghaffary put it, “a snoozefest.”

There could be many reasons for the snooze, including that people care less about Trump than they used to — or that even after Musk reinstated Trump’s suspended Twitter account, the former president has stuck to using the platform he founded, Truth Social, for his ad hoc missives.

But I’d bet much of the problem stems from changes Musk has made to Twitter’s news feed.

These days it’s often difficult to know what’s happening on Twitter. Musk’s self-serving changes to the site’s ranking algorithm have significantly reduced its usability: Where Twitter was once pleasantly varied, serving up ordinary people’s tweets pretty evenly with those of celebrities and politicians, now it seems to highlight the same few users all the time. (I love your tweets, Matt Yglesias, but I wish you weren’t always at the top of my feedff)

Other signs of Twitter’s declining relevancy: Several news organizations, including the New York Times, have said they won’t pay for Twitter Blue, Musk’s subscription service for acquiring a verified user badge on the site. NPR said it would stop posting to its official Twitter accounts because Twitter labeled it as “state-affiliated media,” then as “government-funded media.” PBS, which has also been labeled “government-funded,” said that it, too, would stop tweeting in protest of the label. (NPR is a nonprofit that receives very little funding from the government; the label, it says, undermines its credibility.)

Musk doesn’t like the news media — Twitter’s public relations email address auto-responds with a poop emoji — but I can’t see how fighting with the media can help his site. At the risk of blowing my own horn, media organizations are vital to Twitter because the news is at the core of the site’s utility.

Musk has said that Twitter’s algorithms won’t recommend unverified users in its “For You” section, and that the free verification badges — the simultaneously coveted and maligned blue checks — that many journalists have will soon be removed. The change will further reduce Twitter’s usefulness: If many journalists are removed from the site’s primary feeds, why would people continue to see it as their go-to news source?

As a longtime tweeter, I was saddened and angered by Musk’s trashing of the service. Twitter’s employees and users didn’t deserve this fate. In the hands of a less volatile, more thoughtful leader, Twitter could have been so much more than the raggedy fiefdom of a thin-skinned billionaire it has become.

But as a person who wants to live in a just world with friendly people and nice things, I’m not altogether broken up about Twitter’s decline. As I’ve argued before, Twitter has been a font of misinformation, an accelerant to polarization and a contributor to cultural groupthink. Just before Musk’s takeover, my Times colleague Michelle Goldberg, worrying about similar problems, hoped for a quick, spectacular flame-out: “If Musk makes Twitter awful enough,” she wrote, “users will flee, and it will become less relevant.”

Well, it looks like Michelle got her wish. Stick a fork in it, Elon: Twitter is done.

Elon Musk says George Soros hates humanity. Unrelatedly, filing shows financier sold Tesla stake

After a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission showed that Soros Fund Management sold its entire stake in Musk's Tesla, Musk took to the social-media platform he owns to attack the 92-year-old.

First — without any apparent provocation — he tweeted a comparison between Musk and Magneto, a comic-book character in X-Men who, as the name implies, can generate and control magnetic fields.

Musk didn’t offer an explanation though it’s probably not Soros’s work with magnets. The comic book character’s backstory is, like Soros, a Holocaust survivor and Jewish. Musk is probably mad at all Jews for being evil, or something, but don't call Musk an antisemitic because, as he likes to say, some of my best friends are probably Jewish but I don't know which ones. Achtung! Musk continued:

Censoring for Strongmen Is Now a Pattern For Musk

Musk is often happy to follow foreign governments’ requests to crack down on users they oppose (which is absolutely not “par for the course for all internet companies,” no matter what he may claim). This is evidenced by the fact that Twitter under Musk has approved censorship orders at a higher rate than it ever had before his takeover, especially in repressive places like Turkey and India. In the latter’s case, Twitter has bowed to government requests to censor unfavorable content from global view altogether — such as links to investigative documentaries — and to obscure Indians’ access to foreign governments’ official accounts.

Two-part answer: Part 1.
The Nazis and Musk said the same as you about Jews. (Elon Musk Boosts Antisemitic Blood Libel on Twitter) https://www.haaretz.com/us-news/2023-06-07/ty-article/.premium/elon-mu

Part 2.
The 2023 riot in Paris happened because the police killed an Algerian. This has happened before. The Paris massacre of 1961 was the mass killing of Algerians who were living in Paris by the French National Police. It occurred on 17 October 1961, during the Algerian War (1954–62). Under orders from the head of the Parisian police, Maurice Papon, the National Police attacked a demonstration by 30,000 pro-National Liberation Front (FLN) Algerians. After 37 years of denial and censorship of the press, in 1998 the government finally acknowledged 40 deaths, while some historians estimate that between 200 and 300 Algerians died.[3][4] Death was due to heavy-handed beating by the police, as well as mass drownings, as police officers threw demonstrators into the river Seine.

The massacre was intentional, as substantiated by historian Jean-Luc Einaudi, who won a trial against Papon in 1999. (Papon had been convicted in 1998 of crimes against humanity for his role under the Vichy collaborationist regime during World War II.) Official documentation and eyewitness accounts within the Paris police department suggest that Papon directed the massacre himself. Police records show that he called for officers in one station to be "subversive" in quelling the demonstrations, and assured them protection from prosecution if they participated.[4][5]

Funny. That post does not exist on Twitter.

Part 2.
All I said was "Just because he's Jewish, doesn't mean he isn't evil."

There is nothing wrong with that statement. If you believe that there is something wrong with saying that just being part of a particular demographic precludes you from being an evil person, you have been thoroughly mindfucked and propagandized and are not worth having a conversation with.

Elon Musk Boosts Antisemitic Blood Libel on Twitter

The Twitter CEO responded to an antisemitic conspiracy theory post, giving it legitimacy and views

WASHINGTON - Twitter CEO Elon Musk boosted an antisemitic blood libel on Twitter on Wednesday, replying to a tweet offering a choice between using blood taken from children, linked to an image of U.S. President Joe Biden, or hating Jews, referencing a picture of actor Mel Gibson, who has made antisemitic tirades in the past.

An account known as TopLobsta tweeted: "you can do adrenochrome or you can hate the Js. Which way western men."

The J in "hate the Js" stands for Jews.

"Which Way, Western Man?" is the title of a 1978 book by white supremacist author William Gayley Simpson and an antisemitic meme.

Adrenochrome references a QAnon conspiracy theory about harvesting the chemical from children as a drug.

— Shayan Sardarizadeh (@Shayan86) June 7, 2023

Adrenochrome, a real chemical compound produced by the oxidation of adrenaline, has been co-opted as a fictionalized drug by the QAnon conspiracy theory, which posits that “satanic,” “globalist” and/or "Hollywood” elites harvest adrenal glands from trafficked children as a life-extending or psychedelic drug. It is a 21st century medicalized version of the blood libel.

Musk replied to the tweet with: "Gibson is really that buff these days?" TopLobsta then replied with a fictional Mel Gibson workout plan parodying antisemitism, tweeting "3x10 ADL reprimandation 5x5 holocaust denials 7x3 rabbi bashing."

https://web.archive.org/web/20230608182022/https://img.haarets.co.il/b

QAnon's blood libel of trafficking children is rooted in the debunked claim spread throughout social media that an Italian sculpture depicts the alleged murder of 2-year-old Simon of Trent in the 15th century. Jewish residents were falsely blamed for conducting a ritual killing before being tortured into giving false confessions leading to their execution. Pope Paul VI decreed in 1965 that the town's Jewish residents had nothing to do with his death and the whole affair was a fraud.

Both the affair itself, and the claim that the statue in question depicts the alleged affair, have both been proven historically inaccurate, though this has not stopped the antisemitic conspiracy theory from being propagated on social media — and now elevated by among the world's most famous men.

Musk's engagement with the blatantly antisemitic blood libel comes days after the entrepreneur, who has been increasingly scrutinized in recent weeks for invoking antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories targeting Jewish billionaire George Soros, earned plaudits from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the two discussed the potential of artificial intelligence technology.

In a tweeted video statement in Hebrew, the prime minister called Musk, who owns Twitter, "a man whose wisdom and contribution to humanity I very much admire." This conversation followed Israel’s Health Ministry denouncing Musk’s affirmation of a conspiracy theory that played down coronavirus mortality among young people.

"Zero," Musk repeated in reference to a tweet by Zero Hedge, a far-right libertarian blog site that purportedly cited Israeli data that “zero young healthy individuals died of COVID-19.” The Health Ministry called the assertion "fake news."

It Turns Out Elon Is Speedrunning The Enshittification Learning Curve, Not The Content Moderation One from the a-race-to-make-the-site-worse-and-worse dept

Wed, Jul 5th 2023 09:27am - Mike Masnick

Our most popular post last year was my post attempting to help Elon Musk “speedrun” the content moderation learning curve. People still talk to me about that post to this day. What’s been somewhat surprising to me, however, is that while nearly every other social media site eventually figures out the basics of the content moderation learning curve, Musk has a Sisyphean ability to slide back down that curve again and again and again.

But I had a realization over the weekend: it’s not the content moderation learning curve that he’s speedrunning. It’s the Enshittification learning curve.

As you’ll recall from Cory Doctorow’s excellent coinage, enshittification happens through the following process:

first, companies are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves.

Twitter was locked in a chaotic doom loop. Now it’s on the verge of collapse. Since the ‘genius’ bought Twitter last year, he’s made a series of poor decisions – and now the platform is almost unusable.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/05/twitter-elon-mus
k-verge-of-collapse

If you use Twitter, the service that not so long ago was the best way to take in breaking news and find audiences for serious conversations, you may have found it substantially less useful in the past year. Over this past weekend you found it almost unusable. On Saturday, everything melted down. Thousands of users reported that they had major issues using the platform, including an inability to access any tweets or to post their own tweets – so, basically, everything for which one might want to use Twitter.

On Saturday, Musk announced that Twitter was limiting the ways all users could access tweets “to address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation”. In other words, Musk was blaming commercial services that might want to scrape tweets and incorporate them into machine-learning models. There is no reason to believe this is actually happening, but Musk’s longtime hostility to artificial intelligence must have led him to deploy such services as likely suspects to blame for Twitter’s fragility.

Then Musk announced that accounts that didn’t pay for the company’s Twitter Blue service (almost all of them) would be limited to viewing a total of 600 posts a day, while accounts that did pay up would be limited to 6,000. Newly created Twitter accounts would be limited to viewing 300 posts a day. Later on Saturday, after significant public ridicule and anger, Musk twice raised the limits, as if that would appease users. As of Sunday night the limits stood at 10,000 posts a day for Blue subscribers, 1,000 a day for free accounts and 500 for newly created free accounts.

Such chaotic decisions certainly cast further doubt on Musk’s competence. There is no way he ran any predictive analyses to come up with such policies and numbers. He’s just winging it – poorly.

Over the past year, since the former genius assumed complete control of Twitter, he has expressed hostility toward its most loyal and active classes of user, including journalists, political and social activists, and the very businesses Twitter depends on for advertising revenue. By driving away advertisers from an already shaky and poorly run firm, Musk has lurched toward a desperate but ultimately futile move: to coerce (not encourage) users to subscribe to Twitter Blue, a special tier of membership that costs $8 (£6) a month, or 38.29 reis in Brazil, the third-largest market for Twitter after the US and Japan. Those 38.29 reis are about half what most people in Brazil pay each month for internet access itself and is beyond a reasonable expense for the vast majority of people there.

Imagine being the sort of person who decides that even $8 a month is worth paying for a service that just keeps getting worse. Imagine wanting to pay money to the violent and oppressive government of Saudi Arabia, one of the major investors Musk brought in on the deal. This is what Musk is demanding of Twitter users, most of whom just want to keep up with what their favourite celebrities are doing and get alerted to breaking news in their area.

While promising Twitter Blue users a slightly less annoying experience and the potential to reach a larger audience than plebeian users might, Musk has degraded the service for everyone. Whether because of indignation, arrogance, ignorance or desperation, Musk has fired more than half of the staff that it took to keep Twitter running and growing at its peak. Entire teams like trust and safety, which tried to limit threats and hate speech, have been gutted.

Now, no one is even trying to make the experience of Twitter pleasant or unthreatening. Many on the technical side of the firm have left or been fired as well, leaving a skeletal group working excessively to keep Twitter running on fewer servers. To compound all of this, Musk has decided he is above such mortal concerns as paying one’s bills. So he has stopped paying for office space while demanding workers stop working from home. More crucially to users, Musk has stopped paying for the very servers Twitter needs to provide consistent service to its 230 million daily – but frustrated – active users.

Elon Musk is running Twitter into the ground like Donald Trump ran the US government – fueled by fits of indignation and paranoia.

If Musk were a clever or brilliant thinker, as some people still believe despite all available evidence, one could assume that he has some master plan or that he’s making strategic decisions about the scope, scale, design and functionality of the service. He is not. He has not. He is running Twitter into the ground like Donald Trump ran the US government – fueled by fits of indignation and paranoia. Since the day he proposed taking over, Musk has demonstrated no interest or expertise in how such a service might enhance the lives of its users or at least make money to stay afloat. He’s run it on debt – debt accrued from some of the most dangerous people in the world.

With the new debt Musk took on to complete the purchase of Twitter stock and take the company private, the company’s annual debt payments ballooned to about $1bn a year. Yet the company’s operations in 2021 generated about $630m in cashflow. And those were better times for online advertising, and a better time to be a user of or advertiser on Twitter.

Twitter was never great. The company never had the staff, technology, policies or resources it would have taken to rid the experience of harassment, hatred and calls for violence. I have argued that the very nature of services like Facebook and Twitter make that goal impossible. Social media are, on balance and by design, bad for human beings. But Twitter did amplify the communicative goals of some non-Nazi users, such as social-justice activists. It offered important information during emergencies and breaking news moments (along with the predictable misinformation that flows in those moments). Twitter was at least useful and trying to do less harm before Musk took it over. Now it’s solely the refuge of white supremacists like Tucker Carlson, exiled from even some of the least respectable edges of the public sphere. But Musk loves the guy. So he’s the new star of Twitter, enhancing no one’s quality of life and enlightening no one.

How long can this Twitter last? It must be a matter of months away from total collapse. Of course, I’ve been saying that for a year now, and I have no special insight into its financial matters. Now, however, things seem to be in a death spiral that is more than financial. It’s technical. While Musk tried his best to distract critics by blaming artificial intelligence companies allegedly scraping Twitter, a glitch in Twitter itself meant its computers were demanding data from its servers in an infinite loop. So Twitter was killing itself. It seems to be a mercy killing.

Tesla's autonomous driving tech used to rely both on cameras and radar, but it ditched the latter and adopted a new approach called Tesla Vision. Musk Vision would be more accurate because it is all Musk's dim idea to cut costs.

The Rich Are Crazy for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Paul Krugman

The Rich Are Crazier Than You and Me

July 6, 2023, 7:00 p.m. ET

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a crank. His views are a mishmash of right-wing fantasies mixed with remnants of the progressive he once was: Bitcoin boosterism, anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, assertions that Prozac causes mass shootings, opposition to U.S. support for Ukraine, but also favorable mention for single-payer health care. But for his last name, nobody would be paying him any attention — and despite that last name, he has zero chance of winning the Democratic presidential nomination.

Yet now that Ron DeSantis’s campaign (slogan: “woke woke immigrants woke woke”) seems to be on the skids, Kennedy is suddenly getting support from some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley. Jack Dorsey, who founded Twitter, has endorsed him, while some other prominent tech figures have been holding fund-raisers on his behalf. Elon Musk, who is in the process of destroying what Dorsey built, hosted him for a Twitter spaces event.

So what does all this tell us about the role of technology billionaires in modern American political life? The other day I wrote about how a number of tech bros have become recession and inflation truthers, insisting that the improving economic news is fake. (I neglected to mention Dorsey’s 2021 declaration that hyperinflation was “happening.” How’s that going?) What the Silicon Valley Kennedy boomlet shows is that this is actually part of a broader phenomenon.

What seems to attract some technology types to R.F.K. Jr. is his contrarianism — his disregard for conventional wisdom and expert opinion. So before I get into the tech-bro specific aspects of this weird political moment, let me say a few things about being contrarian.

One sad but true fact of life is that most of the time conventional wisdom and expert opinion are right; yet there can be big personal and social payoffs to finding the places where they’re wrong. The trick to achieving these payoffs is to balance on the knife edge between excessive skepticism of unorthodoxy and excessive credulity.

It’s all too easy to fall off that knife’s edge in either direction. When I was a young, ambitious academic I used to make fun of stodgy older economists whose reaction to any new idea was “It’s trivial, it’s wrong and I said it in 1962.” These days I sometimes worry that I’ve turned into that guy.

On the other hand, reflexive contrarianism is, as the economist Adam Ozimek puts it, a “brain rotting drug.” Those who succumb to that drug “lose the ability to judge others they consider contrarian, become unable to tell good evidence from bad, a total unanchoring of belief that leads them to cling to low quality contrarian fads.”

Tech bros appear to be especially susceptible to brain-rotting contrarianism. As I wrote in my newsletter, their financial success all too often convinces them that they’re uniquely brilliant, able to instantly master any subject, without any need to consult people who’ve actually worked hard to understand the issues. And in many cases they became wealthy by defying conventional wisdom, which predisposes them to believe that such defiance is justified across the board.

Add to this the fact that great wealth makes it all too easy to surround yourself with people who tell you what you want to hear, validating your belief in your own brilliance — a sort of intellectual version of the emperor’s new clothes.

And to the extent that contrarian tech bros talk to anyone else, it’s to one another. The tech entrepreneur and writer Anil Dash tells us that “it’s impossible to overstate the degree to which many big tech C.E.O.s and venture capitalists are being radicalized by living within their own cultural and social bubble.” He calls this phenomenon of venture capitalism “VC QAnon,” a concept that I find helps explain many of the strange positions taken by tech billionaires lately.

Let me add a personal speculation. It may seem odd to see men of vast wealth and influence buying into conspiracy theories about elites running the world. Aren’t they the elites? But I suspect that famous, wealthy men may be especially frustrated by their inability to control events, or even stop people from ridiculing them on the internet. So rather than accepting that the world is a complicated place nobody can control, they’re susceptible to the idea that there are secret cabals out to get them.

There’s historical precedent here. Watching Elon Musk’s descent, I know that I’m not alone in thinking of Henry Ford, who remains in many ways the ultimate example of a famous, influential entrepreneur, and who also became a rabid, conspiracy-theorizing anti-Semite. He even paid for a reprinting of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a forgery that was probably promoted by the Russian secret police. (Time is a flat circle.)

In any case, what we’re seeing now is something remarkable. Arguably, the craziest faction in U.S. politics right now isn’t red-hatted blue-collar guys in diners, it’s technology billionaires living in huge mansions and flying around on private jets. At one level it’s quite funny. Unfortunately, however, these people have enough money to do serious damage.

Idiot Paul Krugman is just mad that the "wrong" rich people are backing Kennedy.

He'd be thrilled about Kennedy if it were Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet and George Soros that were backing him.

Fuck idiot Paul Krugman.

ETA: Twitter is working just fine and isn't going anywhere. This will end up being one more idiot thing that comes out of Krugman's idiot mouth that I'll get to rub in his idiot face when it doesn't happen.

Why do you listen to that idiot. He hasn't been right about anything in his life.

6ix, you are crazier than Musk or Trump, but then I have never known an East Texas Trumptard who wasn't crazy, yet didn't know that craziness was the cause of all their problems, not Democrats.

Here is something crazy Musk did, without thinking about what his fired employees would do to him in revenge: Elon Musk’s Firing Spree Comes Back to Haunt Twitter

The social media company has threatened litigation against Meta for allegedly stealing trade secrets by hiring ousted employees to create Threads in a matter of months.

Crazy people and, especially, Trumptards are never good at correctly imagining the consequences when they exercise their super-inflated ideas of what freedom means. Trumptards and some Democrats cannot grasp the connection between what they do and what happens to them if there is a time delay of more than a week between their action and the consequences. Bad things happen to them for no apparent reason because they don't understand time and mostly never will.

Yeah. He's probably going to win that lawsuit too.

Meta's Threads is not going to overtake Twitter. Just like Mastadon didn't overtake Twitter. Just like Tribal didn't overtake Twitter. Just like Bitchute and Rumble didn't overtake YouTube.

At least you've added "some Democrats" to that. It is capable of learning!

PEOPLE. You're describing people.
