Republican Senator Gives Away the Game on Why They Killed Border Deal

Josh Hawley is admitting point-blank this fight was never about the border at all.

Ellie Quinlan Houghtaling / January 26, 2024 / 11:16 a.m. ET

https://newrepublic.com/post/178488/republican-senator-hawley-admits-t
ruth-killed-border-deal

Senator Josh Hawley said the quiet part out loud on Friday, explicitly tying the GOP’s border security grandstanding to a coordinated effort to hurt President Joe Biden’s reelection chances.

“Senator, is this deal dead, effectively?” Fox News’s Laura Ingraham asked Hawley Thursday evening.

“I hope so,” Hawley said. “It should be. If it’s not dead yet it should be dead. There is absolutely no reason to agree to policies that would further enable Joe Biden.”

The Senate reached a bipartisan border deal this week, which would include additional funding for border security as well as aid for Ukraine. But the minute Donald Trump criticized the deal, Senate Republicans caved and said they probably won’t pass it.

Hawley’s statement is more proof that Republicans aren’t all that interested in the so-called border crisis. They just want to use it as a political tool in the 2024 election.

ABSOLUTELY FUCKING RIGHT.

But not about further enabling Joe Biden* to win an election.

About further enabling Joe Biden* to allow MILLIONS of illegal alien invaders flood our country.

This bill had nothing to do with securing the border and keeping them out. It was for BILLIONS OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS TO CLOTHE, HOUSE AND FEED ILLEGAL ALIENS ON THE TAXPAYER DIME AND TO GIVE FURTHER BILLIONS TO UKRAINE.

Fuck. You. Liar.

I've seen you post this dumb shit in 3 threads now, and it doesn't matter how many times you try to spread the lie it's not going to work.

If the Democrats and Joe Biden* are so serious about Republicans shutting down their bill that was magically going to fix the border overnight, I'm sure they won't mind stepping back and letting Texas take care of the border for them and they will refrain from going there and cutting holes in the razor wire and escorting illegal alien invaders into our country.

Right?

If it really all is about politics, then Texas is actually doing free campaign work for Democrats and Joe Biden*.

It is Democrats that got E-Verify up and running smoothly.
https://www.e-verify.gov/

But Republicans will not change the law to jail employers who hire Illegals.

Sorry to tell you this but Biden cannot arrest millions of scofflaws who hire Illegals. Why can't Biden arrest the employers? Republicans in Congress won't change the law.

The single most significant thing Republicans could do to reduce Illegals is to require E-Verify for all hires and jail employers who don’t use it or who hire despite it. Why not use this?

Illegals could be effectively dealt with via E-Verify. If you make it hard to hire undocumented workers, they’ll stop coming. The problem is that Republican Congressmen downplay this because it would work, and that would piss off the business community that wants lots of cheap foreign labor.

6ixStringJack, I would love to see millions of Republican voters arrested for hiring Illegal Aliens but that can't happen because the Republicans in Congress won't pass the funding to arrest their very own crooked voters by the millions. Republicans won't fund the auditing of their tax-cheating voters, either, but that is more of the same story where Republican Congressmen protect crooks who vote for Republicans. Trump hires Illegal Aliens to care for his properties and he cheats on his taxes. It is the GOP way. Should Democrats be arrested? I know some deserve the same harsh treatment.

Biden Blackmail Intensifies: Won't Shut Border Until Congress Coughs Up Ukraine, Israel Funds

Sunday, Jan 28, 2024 - 06:55 AM

As Republican governors circle the wagon around Texas, President Biden on Saturday doubled down on a reluctant agreement to secure the southern US border - but only if Congress passes a bipartisan bill that would also allocate funds for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, and would still allow as many as 150,000 illegal crossings per month.

"If that bill were the law today I'd shut down the border right now and fix it quickly and bring a bipartisan bill that would be good for America and help fix our broken immigration system and allow speedy access for those who deserve to be here," Biden said, according to Fox News' Chad Pergram.

Except, as many have pointed out, Biden doesn't need Congress, or the bill, to do that right now.

As we noted yesterday, House Speaker Mike Johnson debunked the claim, saying "President Biden falsely claimed yesterday he needs Congress to pass a new law to allow him to close the southern border, but he knows that is untrue."

WHOSE COUNTRY IS BIDEN* REPRESENTING?
Whose borders is Biden* protecting?

CERTAINLY NOT OURS!

Is there any way to charge that stupid fuck with treason???

BTW, I think there's so much dirt on Biden and Ukraine that Zelenskiy could be blackmailing Biden.

He deserves it if he got it. He's the most Anti-American executive we've ever had.

But let's be serious here. I doubt he even sees an impeachment trial with Kamala in the VP seat even though he's the only the second President in my lifetime that actually deserved one. GWB, of course, is the other one.

A shot across the bow.
Finally.

With any luck, they can keep this going all summer long.

I know this has been posted many times before, but all of these DEM crises are SELF INFLICTED INJURIES, from constantly gaslighting and censoring Americans to critically flawed pro-globalist policies.

Hubby read me a paragraph from book that he found on a website.
It went into detail how to forward a globalist agenda by destroying all affiliations: nations, cultures, families, religions, morals, sex roles, histories ... It laid out everything that's been happening recently.

I was shocked to learn it was written a long time ago. Early 1900s IIRC. Wish I could find it, I think it would shock you too.

I just wish that, as a whole, the Republicans were any better.

I know that they're not, and I haven't forgotten my concerns of what happened under GWB (Patriot Act, militarizing the local police forces, etc.)

I think that what we've seen since Obama was President, with a slight correction during Trump's first Presidency despite all the Media pushback orchestrated by a Media that was taken under direct control of the government under Obama's Presidency, is a far swing the other way from what was happening under GWB, to the point of insanity on all fronts.

I'm not worried about the over-correction of the pendulum swinging back while Trump is President, but I do not want NeoCons like Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney and the Bushite trash at The Lincoln Project at the head of the Republican table when that pendulum does swing the other way.

I'm hoping that Trump can get things right when he's reelected and actually fix the country this time or the next time Democrats lose it will be to NeoCons who ACTUALLY are going to turn this into a police state.

The Federal government holds far too much power over the citizens now. It doesn't appear that it does during the 4-year fucking free-for-all that the Biden* shit-show has given us at face value, but their doing absolutely nothing about any crime within or against our borders IS just flexing that muscle in a different way. Especially when they're going to try to make criminals out of state politicians who have had enough and are going to do what is right.

Republicans are angry about aliens! If Homeland Security would kill the aliens this anger would dissipate, replaced with accusations of merely cruel and unusual punishment.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/31/us/politics/impeachment-mayorkas-im
migration.html

The impeachment articles that the House Homeland Security Committee approved accuse Mr. Mayorkas of flouting several provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act that say deportable migrants “shall be detained” until they can be removed from the country. They charge that the secretary pursued a “catch and release” scheme to allow inadmissible migrants into the United States, knowing that it would be difficult or even impossible to ensure they would later appear in immigration court for removal proceedings.

What the charges do not take into account, however, is that Mr. Mayorkas also has the legal authority to determine which migrants to prioritize for detention, given limited bed space and long backlogs in the immigration courts.

“Congress loves passing laws that are impossible to execute,” said Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, the policy director at the American Immigration Council, adding that enforcing detention mandates is often “a question of resources.”

The United States has not had enough detention beds to accommodate the number of migrants awaiting removal proceedings for several years, well before President Biden took office. Even the Trump administration released migrants into the country, because the maximum detention capacity — about 55,000 in 2019 — was not enough to accommodate the number of arrivals seeking entry. Mr. Trump’s Remain in Mexico policy requiring some migrants to wait for their immigration court dates outside the United States, which Republicans want to reinstitute, did not apply to all migrants making claims at the border.

One of the impeachment articles says Mr. Mayorkas “paroled aliens en masse in order to release them from mandatory detention,” again with the intent of undermining the law.

But the immigration act gives the executive branch parole power to let migrants temporarily live and work in the United States for humanitarian reasons, or if their admission would be to the public’s benefit. Decisions about whom to parole are to be made on a case-by-case basis, and there is no restriction as to what criteria the secretary can consider when determining who qualifies. There is also no statutory cap on how many migrants can be allowed into the country under the authority.

Several past administrations, including those of former Presidents Trump, Barack Obama and George W. Bush, have relied on parole authority to bring members of certain vulnerable migrant groups into the United States.

The Biden administration has built on pre-existing programs allowing nationals of certain economically ravaged Central and South American countries with sponsors already in the United States to seek parole. It has also inaugurated similar pathways for Afghans and Ukrainians fleeing war, and introduced a mobile app known as C.B.P. One to streamline migrants through ports of entry.

House Republicans have sought to close down those avenues, passing legislation last year that would shutter nearly all of them.

Denver struggling to stay afloat, facing ‘pressing budgetary concern’ after arrival of 38,000 migrants

Colorado’s capital has joined the evergrowing list of cities that have become overwhelmed by the influx of migrants — with over 38,000 asylum seekers arriving in Denver in the past year.

The Mile-High City has struggled to accommodate the new arrivals who have inundated city shelters and hospitals, prompting state officials to enact a limit on how long migrants can stay in state-funded rooms starting Feb. 5.

The city initially paused the discharge of migrant families from shelters on Nov. 17 to assist the increasing number of new arrivals.

However, after seeing a dramatic uptick, the city is now housing 4,500 migrants and will resume discharging migrant families.

Denver’s Deputy Director of Communications Jose Salas told The Post the city will extend “its previous length-of-stay policy for families from 37 days to 42 days.”

Good.

Fuck you, Denver.

Maybe you'll stop voting Democrat.

38,000 of them are fucking you up?

Six in 10 swing-state voters say President Joe Biden bears responsibility for a surge in migrants at the US-Mexico border, a downbeat signal for his reelection prospects as Republicans largely avoid blame on the issue, a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll found.

Biden again trails Donald Trump in each of seven swing states in the monthly survey, and lags Trump 42% to 48% across all those states in a head-to-head match-up. The former president’s lead grows to 9 percentage points when third-party candidates are included

You mean to say that the 40% of American voters with double digit IQ who "vote blue no matter who" aren't blaming Joe Biden* for the mess that Joe Biden* created?

Who'd have thunk it!

You're fucked Joe*. Can't wait to watch the Democratic Party burn in flames. Thanks for pouring gasoline all over it the last 3 years.

The actual question on the poll referenced and completely misrepresented in the Bloomberg article above is this...

Based on what you know, how responsible, if at all, are the following for the increase
in migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border? — President Joe Biden
Very responsible 2010 41%
Somewhat responsible 1006 20%
Not that responsible 671 14%
Not responsible at all 734 15%
Don’t know/no opinion 536 11%

https://pro-assets.morningconsult.com/wp-uploads/2024/01/Full-Data.pdf

That's a LOT fucking worse than they presented it.

Only 15% of voters in those swing states don't blame Joe Biden* for the immigration problem. (Those same 15% of voters blame Republicans for the problem two questions above this one).

61% of voters blame Joe Biden*, like the article indicated.

Half of the Democrat voters can't bring themselves to not give him at least some of the blame on the issue. 11% of the voters are blissfully unaware of the world around them.

That's 1.5 out of every 10 voters in the swing states that "vote blue no matter who".

Looks like nobody is buying the lies out of the white house that the media is trying to get people to buy. That's what happens when the propaganda arm of the Democrat government spends all day lying about everything for 7 years straight. Nobody listens to them anymore.

JOE* IS SUPER FUCKED.

75% Of House Democrats Voted Against Deporting Criminal Migrants Who Commit Social Security Fraud

Democrats talk a big game about 'Republican attacks on Social Security,' but 75% of House Dems just voted against deporting migrants who commit Social Security fraud.

Introduced by Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) in December, H.R. 6678 passed with 172 "yea" votes, and 155 "nay" votes - all Democrats, with 55 of them voting with the Republicans.

As former Trump adviser and head of the America First Legal Foundation Stephen Miller posted on X, "155 HOUSE DEMOCRATS — 75% OF THEIR CONFERENCE — JUST VOTED AGAINST DEPORTING CRIMINAL MIGRANTS WHO COMMIT SOCIAL SECURITY FRAUD AND ROB OUR SENIORS."

"They’d rather protect illegal aliens than our seniors," said the House Judiciary Committee in a Thursday post on X.

Meanwhile, 150 Democrats also voted against legislation that would quickly deport illegal aliens who drive drunk.

"I am appalled to see a majority of Democrats in the House of Representatives voting to prevent illegal aliens who endanger the lives of American citizens by drunk driving from being deported. Americans deserve leaders who put their safety and prosperity first," said Rep. August Pfluger (R-TX).

According to OA Online, "H.R. 6976, the Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act, introduced by Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL), closes a gaping loophole in U.S. immigration law related to drunk driving. Because there is neither a ground of inadmissibility nor a ground of removability explicitly related to driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs, criminal aliens currently can escape accountability for their reckless actions and be free to re-offend and endanger communities. By creating a ground of inadmissibility and a ground of removability for aliens who have committed DUI offenses, this legislation provides long-awaited and much-needed reforms to safeguard American communities."

According to Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), the bill would create a "separate but unequal" system of justice for immigrants.

Uh, Tlaib? There's a reason why illegal immigrants treated differently: THEY'RE NOT CITIZENS AND THEY'VE ALREADY BROKEN ONE LAW.

How are Democrats so fucked up in the 2020's that Bill Maher is so often the voice of reason for the party?

Maher: Biden Can Fix Border Crisis, He Doesn't Need New Powers While There Are Existing Laws

Quote:

BILL MAHER: This election, my guess, will probably turn on something like, I don't know if you saw this but yesterday in New York City some illegal immigrants who were brought to the city attacked a bunch of cops. I think we have video of it.

This is real. That's what's going to happen this election. It's only in 8 states. Most of the country has their mind made up. No matter what either guy did it wouldn't change. It's going to be something like this that, whatever, the 4% of people who are actually undecided in those 8 states. They're going to see something like this.

This is what I worry about. Is this even real? I mean, this one is. But we have, please, we have Biden making robocalls that are not Joe Biden. We have Taylor Swift having sex with people, and it's not Taylor Swift. I don't think anything in this election could be certified as real. But that's what worries me about this election. Something like that, and that's an immigration issue.

[Illegal] immigration is real but their reaction to it is not real. It's all a bunch of acting. They should be getting some kind of award this award season. No, really. The Republicans act like they want to solve this but the Democrats called their bluff. There is a bill right now that a lot of them, Mitch McConnell, a pretty conservative Senator, saying this is as good of a deal that you are going to get. They don't want it because they don't want this issue to be solved because they can use it as an issue so you can make speeches like the one you just made about "working class" and blah, blah, blah. If they solve the immigration --

[LAUGHTER]

Well, it's better than what Trump does.

[LAUGHTER]

...

I was going to say that part two of the acting is Joe Biden saying you know what if you just give me a new law -- a new law? Why doesn't -- the president can fix this. He already has the existing laws. "I need a piece of paper from Congress to deal with the border." No, you already have that.

Outrageous—But Not Surprising

The Times Square assault of two NYPD officers, and the release of several of the suspects, are predictable outcomes of destructive policies on migrants and public safety.

Last weekend, video cameras posted in Times Square captured a scene that has sparked outrage across the city. While struggling to arrest a resisting suspect, two NYPD officers were viciously attacked by at least six other men—all migrants, recently arrived in our “sanctuary city.” They all got away. Not long afterward, police made seven arrests related to the incident, on charges that included assault and robbery (according to reports, one of the officers’ cell phone was stolen during the fight). Adding insult to injury, at least four of the seven attackers have already been released. The attack and the subsequent release of the alleged perpetrators may shock the consciences of many New Yorkers, but anyone surprised by this hasn’t been paying attention.

CNN: To Avoid Prosecution, Migrant Criminal Gangs Steal In New York, Spend In Florida

Quote:

JOHN MILLER: These individuals, I went over their rap sheets yesterday, multiple charges, grand larceny, robbery, attempted robbery, grand larceny, and larcency.

This particular crew worked on mopeds and scooters, they were doing organized retail theft, snatches on the street, iPhones, iPads, clothing, so on and so forth. One they are still seeking has ten charges on one day because he's part of a pattern that's been going on. I'm looking at the dates their arrests started, which is probably close to when they got here. They've only been here a couple of months.

So what the detectives are telling me is, they have crews here that operate in New York, do all their stealing, then go to Florida to spend the money and come back. I’m like, 'Why don’t they just stay and steal in Florida?' They said, 'Because there you go to jail.'"

Representative Veronica Escobar, who has a prominent role in Joe Biden's reelection bid, said the president and the Democratic Party made a critical "mistake" by ignoring the border crisis.

Escobar, a Texas Democrat whom Biden tapped in April to be a national co-chair of his campaign, admitted she's been frustrated with her party's response to the surge of migrants at the southern border.

"I'll be very candid," she told Politico's Deep Dive podcast on Friday. "I wish the Democratic Party, the president included, had leaned in on this issue early on. It's what I advocated—when we were in the majority, we should lean in and we should explain to the American people how difficult this is and how multifaceted the solution has to be."

She continued, "But nobody wanted to talk about it. And I think that was a strategic mistake on the part of my party."

Denver Starts Booting Migrants From Shelters As City Nears 'Breaking Point'

Sunday, Feb 04, 2024 - 01:55 PM

Denver, Colorado is reaching a breaking point as migrant arrivals continue to overwhelm the self-proclaimed sanctuary city.

As a result, Mayor Mike Johnston (D) suggested that the city may stop accepting more, while officials begin the process of booting them from overcrowded shelters.
DENVER, CO – JANUARY 13 : A migrant lie on the sleeping pad at a makeshift shelter in Denver, Colorado on Friday, January 13, 2023. (Photo by Hyoung Chang/The Denver Post)

"I think our city is very close to its breaking point now," he told Fox & Friends last week. And we’ve been talking to leaders in D.C. around the country about why we need them to take action here. I think we have successfully welcomed almost 40,000 migrants in the last year and — and we know what it takes to do this successfully, we just need that help."

Last year the city helped over 38,000 migrants. As of Friday night, 3,895 were staying in city shelters.

"That’s an incredible number of people to shelter, support, feed, help with transportation, deal with case management," said Jon Ewing of Denver Human Services.

According to Johnston, more needs to be done to address the influx of migrants at the southern US border.

"And the things we need are — yes, we need federal dollars, but the most important thing is we need, you know, work authorization for folks when they arrive, and we need those resources at the border so you can add more security at the border and so you can help process those asylum claims so the folks that do arrive here can work," he said.

Perhaps preventing them from entering the country in the first place is the way to go, Mike?

On Friday, Johnson told KOA news that the city is exploring options to pause taking in more people.

"We are considering it. We have to consider all options, particularly if there isn’t any help from the federal government," he said.

Denver is clearing out migrant shelters

According to Fox31, Denver is clearing out shelters used by the migrants.

Starting on Monday, 150 migrants in city shelters will be discharged. Then that number will fluctuate between 50-100 every day until all 3,800 are out of the 10 shelters currently run by the city.

“The hope and goal is that we are able to connect the vast majority with housing, or at least as many of them as we possibly can,” Ewing said.

The number of migrants arriving in Denver is coming down — 48 arrived on Thursday and 64 on Friday, a significant drop from the beginning of January, when that number was 200-300 daily. -Fox31

"4,000 people when you have limited budget, when you have limited resources … very difficult to find enough housing as is, affordable housing as is, in the city of Denver — that’s going to be difficult," said Ewing.

Denver is one of several Democratic strongholds across the United States which pledged maximum virtue by signaling themselves as sanctuary cities - only to be completely unprepared for the surge of migrants that followed the Biden administration's open invitation to them on day one.

New York is facing a similar overload, as Mayor Eric Adams (D) has repeatedly called on the Biden administration to lend a hand in dealing with the migrants. The Big Apple has seen a surge of more than 160,000 asylum seekers since last year.

Gov. Abbott says operations on the border will expand

Speaking in Eagle Pass with other GOP governors, he cites ‘invasion’

Gov. Greg Abbott gathered with 13 fellow Republican governors on Sunday in a public park.

“A state can defend itself and its citizens to protect their safety from the imminent danger that we are facing — and from an invasion from millions of people coming from across the globe into our country, who are unaccounted for whatsoever,” Abbott said, again casting the record number of asylum-seekers crossing the border as an “invasion.”

The governor declared that “as we speak right now, the Texas National Guard is undertaking operations to expand this.”

“We’re not going to contain ourselves just to this park,” Abbott said, flanked by GOP governors with rifle-toting state soldiers and military vehicles behind them. He did not provide more details on what that would entail. I hope the detail is that Republican governors order soldiers to kill illegal alien invaders. Pretty please, do it.

What's in the Senate's border agreement?

It would also create a new, voluntary program for migrants to fly back to their home countries on commercial airlines paid for by the U.S. government.

Perhaps the most controversial element of the bill is a three-year policy to shut down the processing of asylum applications from people who crossed illegally if the number of expulsions and apprehensions of migrants reaches a week-long average of 4,000. It would create a mandated shutdown after a week-long average of 5,000 or more.

During the time the border is shut down, migrants caught crossing illegally would be immediately deported.

Quote:

In 2019, I traveled with a bipartisan delegation of American mayors to the border flashpoint of Tornillo, Texas, just outside of El Paso.

There, the U.S. government had set up a tent city, which looked strangely like a detention camp. Migrant children, disconnected from their families, were the inhabitants. Temperatures were scorching and our concerns growing, but our access to the facility was denied.

We could only imagine from a distance what those kids were going through. It felt un-American.

On that day five years ago, I couldn’t have imagined the Texas state government actually choosing to make the crisis even worse by busing migrants to Northern cities. We have no proof this has discouraged undocumented individuals from crossing the border. Meanwhile tens of thousands more migrants continue to make the perilous journey.

Since August of 2022, Texas has bused over 33,000 migrants to New York City. The actions of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott have hurt my beloved city by radically overtaxing our municipal resources and undermining our ability to serve the almost 9 million people already living here. His actions have directly cost New York City $708 million, according to Mayor Eric Adams, money that is desperately needed to strengthen our schools and community safety efforts. New York residents live in constant fear that critical services like policing, sanitation and libraries will face severe reductions as a result of the migrant crisis, a fear Abbott has exploited.

But this problem is bigger than New York. One state government purposely penalizing the people of other states is un-American. So much for “e pluribus unum.”

This has nothing to do with discouraging illegal aliens from being illegal aliens you disingenuous fuck.

Until the fucking border is sealed and until you Democrat lowlifes stop giving away taxpayer dollars to people who don't belong here, they're going to keep coming no matter where they go.

You're getting these fucking people because for years it was easy for you to say that they're welcome here when you weren't getting them before and it was the border states that were shouldering a MUCH FUCKING HIGHER burden than you are now. They still continue to do so.

You're just pissing and moaning now because the idiot sub-human trash that regularly votes you in every election cycle is getting a real rude awakening. All that free shit they used to get is being taken away from them and given to people who don't even belong here now. That's a great plan. Now you're buying votes from people who can't vote and that leaves you with no money left to buy the votes of the people who always vote for you. Fuckin' Democrats.

Razor wire everywhere. Rubber bullets for the next year with the warning that they turn into real bullets a year from now.

“We have a catastrophe at our southern border,” Mike Johnson said after ascending to the speakership in October. “Inaction is unacceptable, and we must come together and address the broken border.” But then Trump intervened. Suddenly, Johnson forgot everything he had previously said about border legislation.

Crisis! Crisis! Crisis! Oh, never mind.

By Dana Milbank

When House Speaker Mike Johnson invited President Biden to give his State of the Union address on the unusually late date of March 7, people were puzzled.

Now, the mystery can be revealed. House Republicans delayed the State of the Union so they could use the time to foment a state of disunion.

After the Supreme Court last month sided with the Biden administration in a dispute with Texas over border barriers, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Tex.) asserted that the high court’s order “is unconscionable and Texas should ignore it.” Never mind that two conservative justices joined in the order. Roy suggested that an appropriate response would be to “tell the court to go to hell.”

Reacting to the same ruling, Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) sounded a call to arms, posting on social media that “the feds are staging a civil war, and Texas should stand their ground.”

And Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), nearing the first anniversary of her secessionist call for “a national divorce,” announced: “Now the Biden [administration] is at WAR with Texas.”

House Republicans continued the disunion theme this week, staging a news conference and a hearing to encourage Texas to fight the administration — and the Supreme Court. Rep. Brian Babin (R-Tex.), implying treason by the Biden administration, praised his state because it “stood its ground against an invasion and an administration that clearly wants the opposing forces to win.” And an earthy Rep. Randy Weber (R-Tex.) said of the Supreme Court: “Maybe we ought to tell them to go butt a stump.”

It’s not just words. These dime-store confederates are actively sabotaging the government they serve — by blocking it from mounting an effective response to the historic surge of migrants along the southern border.

Back in October, Biden requested $13.6 billion in emergency funding for border protection, including the hiring of 1,300 additional Border Patrol agents and 1,600 asylum officers, as well as more funds to counter fentanyl smuggling. Because of Republicans’ objections, Congress still hasn’t approved a penny of it.

And now, even as House Republicans wail about a “crisis” and an “invasion” at the border, they are mobilizing to kill a bipartisan deal emerging in the Senate to reform asylum claims and to beef up border security — regarded as the toughest immigration legislation in decades. Biden says he would “shut down the border right now” if given the authorities in the proposal.

Instead of declaring victory and embracing the legislation they have long demanded, House Republicans are moving to impeach the administration’s lead negotiator on the proposal — Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas — on charges so flimsy they do not identify a crime of any kind.

In lieu of allegations of high crimes or misdemeanors, the impeachment articles, approved early Wednesday by the House Homeland Security Committee, charge that Mayorkas “terminated asylum cooperative agreements” with Central American countries. There’s just one problem with this: Secretary of State Antony Blinken is the one who terminated those.

The articles further charge that Mayorkas “willfully refused to comply with the detention mandate” in the Immigration and Nationality Act. In fact, that standard has never been met in the decades it has existed — because Congress has never provided the funds.

And the articles propose impeachment because Mayorkas “terminated contracts” for President Donald Trump’s border wall. Congress’s own investigative arm blessed the legality of the border wall “pause,” which, in any event, was Biden’s policy, not Mayorkas’s.

Underlying the slipshod articles is this fundamental absurdity: House Republicans plan to impeach Mayorkas next week for “failure to enforce the law” at the border — while at the same time loudly encouraging Texas to ignore the law at the border, as well as the highest court in the land.

Much has been said about the mental acuity of the octogenarian Biden and the soon-to-be octogenarian Trump. But the public figure who appears to be struggling the most with his memory lately is the 52-year-old speaker of the House.

In February last year, Johnson (R-La.) shared his considered view that “our immigration system is broken. Reforming that system is a job for Congress.” We know this is his considered view because he used exactly those same words in February 2021, and words very much like them at various points going back to 2017. He has urged Biden to work with Republicans on “substantive legislation” on the border, and said it was imperative that Congress “correct the longstanding loopholes that have encouraged illegal immigration and led to the crisis we face today.” Johnson, reciting a variation of the racist “great replacement” conspiracy theory, even suggested in 2022 that Democrats were trying “to turn all the illegals into voters. ... That’s why the border’s open.”

“We have a catastrophe at our southern border,” he said after ascending to the speakership in October. “Inaction is unacceptable, and we must come together and address the broken border.” He felt so strongly about this that he insisted last fall that border legislation must be enacted before he would allow emergency military aid to Ukraine to go through the House. “I explained that supplemental Ukraine funding is dependent upon enactment of transformative change to our nation’s border security laws,” he wrote after a White House meeting. He told House Republicans in a private meeting that the demand for border legislation would be their “hill to die on.”

Other House Republicans had already said much the same. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the minority whip at the time, argued in 2019: “This is a broken system that needs to be fixed. It takes congressional action. You need to change the law.”

Some Senate Republicans, led by James Lankford (Okla.), did exactly that, negotiating a border-security compromise with Democrats and the White House.

But then Trump intervened. Though he had long demanded that Congress “change our old, broken, ridiculous, weak immigration laws,” the former president now panned the very idea, saying that “a border deal now would be another gift to the radical left Democrats.”

Suddenly, Johnson forgot everything he had previously said about border legislation. In an about-face, he decided Biden had “ample authority” to enforce border security on his own, without the congressional action he had demanded until senators of both parties actually took him up on it. But Johnson didn’t stop there. He went to the House floor on Wednesday and, in his first speech there since accepting the gavel, he ridiculed their “so-called deal” — sight unseen (“I’m working off of reports. I haven’t seen the text”) — as “madness” and a “surrender.”

The speech was a splendid heap of contradiction. On one hand, the speaker sounded alarms about an “open border” and a “soft invasion” by “military-aged single men” from “terrorist regimes,” “coming into our country to do only God knows what.” On the other, he proposed to do absolutely nothing about it, saying Biden has “all the tools and the executive authority necessary.”

That’s as reckless as it is ludicrous. As my colleague Catherine Rampell artfully detailed, Biden has taken more executive actions than Trump did on immigration; many of Trump’s border actions were struck down in court, including by Trump-appointed judges; and other policies — end catch-and-release! — can’t be implemented because Congress hasn’t provided the funds.

Confusingly, Johnson still asserted during his floor speech that legislation with “transformational policy changes” was still needed. But he was certain that the bipartisan Senate deal, which he hadn’t seen, wasn’t it. Yet even as he said that no immigration legislation was needed unless it was transformational, Johnson brought four decidedly non-transformational immigration bills to the floor this week that mostly rehashed existing law.

“I think I need to go to the Capitol physician and see if I can get a neck brace, because I have whiplash following the logic of some of my Republican friends,” Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) said during the floor debate. “We heard all year that we need to pass a bill in order to fix the immigration crisis at the border, and then ... we’re told we don’t need a bill, we don’t need a law. Then here we are today dealing with four more bills.”

But this is the new standard. The hysteria about a crisis along the border is matched only by a determination to do nothing about it. Rather than solve the problem, Republicans prefer to have an issue for the 2024 campaign.

At a news conference on Monday, House Republicans invoked the “crisis” on the border no fewer than 21 times and the “invasion” at least eight times. A news conference by Republican leaders on Tuesday morning brought a dozen more mentions of a crisis — an “unmitigated” and “historic” crisis, the “most pressing” in history.

A House Judiciary subcommittee hearing also on Tuesday morning on the “southern border crisis” produced 19 more mentions of a crisis, and a whopping 113 mentions of an invasion.

On Tuesday afternoon, Republicans brought their minor immigration bills to the floor. “We are here to address an ongoing crisis,” said Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Tex.), leading the debate. “The word ‘crisis’ has been a hard one for my friends on the other side to absorb. … If this doesn’t sound like a crisis to you, I don’t know what would.”

Responded McGovern: “He thinks this is ‘Beetlejuice’; If they say ‘crisis’ three times, the crisis goes away.” He told Republicans, “Shame on you for ginning up all this hate and all this vitriol and not wanting to be part of the solution.”

Now that Johnson’s bluff has been called, we know that his GOP conference isn’t in any hurry to find solutions to the fentanyl epidemic, MS-13 gangs, human trafficking or illegal border crossings. “Let me tell you, I’m not willing to do too damn much right now to help a Democrat and to help Joe Biden’s approval rating,” Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Tex.) told CNN of the emerging border legislation.

This leaves two unsettling possibilities: Do House Republicans not really believe that there is a humanitarian and security crisis at the border? Or, worse, do they believe there’s a crisis but would rather exploit it than solve it?

House Republicans’ usual legal allies have turned against them in their capricious attempt to impeach a Cabinet secretary for the first time in 148 years. Alan Dershowitz, Michael Chertoff and the Wall Street Journal editorial page have all criticized the Mayorkas impeachment, and even Jonathan Turley, House Republicans’ all-purpose witness, has said there is no “cognizable basis here for impeachment.”

In fact, there is only one, non-cognizable basis for impeachment, and that is Marjorie Taylor Greene. She has been calling for Mayorkas’s impeachment for 2½ years, raising money off the effort, and she twice tried to force snap impeachment votes on the House floor last fall, until Republican leaders gave her a guarantee that they would schedule Mayorkas’s impeachment.

This produced a pair of hearings by the Homeland Security Committee to fabricate a rationale for impeachment.

At the first, on Jan. 10, Rep. Morgan Luttrell (R-Tex.) asked law professor Frank Bowman whether selling fentanyl that kills a lot of people could be “considered a high crime.”

“I’m unaware that the secretary has sold any fentanyl,” the professor replied.

The congressman then asked whether Bowman would “consider slavery a high crime.”

“Is there any evidence that Secretary Mayorkas has enslaved anyone?” the professor answered.

Thwarted, Luttrell abandoned his line of questioning. “This is getting a little bit more complicated than I thought it was going to be,” he said.

“We take the use of impeachment extremely seriously,” said committee Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.), opening this week’s markup of the impeachment articles against Mayorkas. Green has previously demonstrated his seriousness about Mayorkas’s impeachment by telling political donors to “get the popcorn.” Green also previously invoked “great replacement” conspiracy theory, divining that Mayorkas’s “intent” was to “fundamentally change the population of the United States, and I believe to empower the Democrat Party in perpetuity.”

Impeachment ringleader Greene offered the panel a lesson on the Constitutional Convention. “Historical evidence is overwhelming that the Founding Fathers intended impeachment to be used to deal with the commission of indictable crimes and the abuse of power,” she read. Except she pronounced it indickt-able. The real indictment is of Republicans, who are being led to impeachment by such a constitutional authority as Greene.

The session followed the usual pattern. Republicans were scary: “Murder.” “Murder!” “MS-13.” “Killed.” “Rot and perish.” “Smuggler.” “Trafficker.” Democrats forced time-consuming roll-call votes in protest of the proceedings. One measure of the quality of debate: Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.) denounced Mayorkas for failing to provide testimony — “the committee has yet to receive a response” — apparently unaware that, as the chairman had already noted, Mayorkas did provide testimony.

Rep. Rob Menendez (D-N.J.) tried to amend the impeachment articles to note that much of the supporting material had been provided by anti-immigrant organizations termed hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Republicans responded by shutting down the hearing and approving the error-plagued articles without further debate.

“Yeah, we’re not debating it,” Green said after cutting off amendments.

The ranking Democrat, Bennie Thompson (Miss.), called the Republicans “cowards.”

But the markup had gone on long enough — about 15 hours — to establish beyond a doubt that, despite their protests to the contrary, Republicans were impeaching Mayorkas because they disagreed with Biden’s border policies.

Greene, denouncing the administration’s supposed “open-border policies,” said that impeachment was a way “to push back on these policies.”

Higgins alleged that “executive policy out of our White House, out of your president … is why our country is disintegrating, America. And who’s ultimately responsible for that? The expert that President Biden hired. That’s who we’re impeaching today.”

Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) said that “President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas changed the policy” at the border, and that “the only remedy that we have is impeachment.”

Thus have House Republicans set a new standard under which any future policy dispute between a president and Congress could be grounds for impeachment. And to what end? Even if Mayorkas is impeached by the House, there is zero possibility he would be removed by the Senate.

As with the border security bill that House Republicans are now killing, the purpose isn’t to fix a problem. It’s to exploit one.

On the Border, Republicans Set a Trap, Then Fell Into It

Feb. 6, 2024, Updated 2:05 p.m. ET

Congressional Republicans thought they had set a clever trap for Democrats that would accomplish complementary political and policy goals.

Their idea was to tie approval of military assistance to Ukraine to tough border security demands that Democrats would never accept, allowing Republicans to block the money for Kyiv that many of them oppose while simultaneously enabling them to pound Democrats for refusing to halt a surge of migrants at the border. It was to be a win-win headed into November’s elections.

But Democrats tripped them up by offering substantial — almost unheard-of — concessions on immigration policy without insisting on much in return. Now it is Republicans who are rapidly abandoning a compromise that gave them much of what they wanted, leaving aid to Ukraine in deep jeopardy, border policy in turmoil and Congress again flailing as multiple crises at home and abroad go without attention because of a legislative stalemate.

The turn of events led to a remarkable Capitol Hill spectacle this week as a parade of Senate Republicans almost instantly repudiated a major piece of legislation they had spent months demanding as part of any agreement to provide more help to a beleaguered Ukraine. Even Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the minority leader and foremost Republican advocate of helping Ukraine, and Senator James Lankford, the Oklahoma Republican who invested months in cutting the border deal, suggested they would vote to block it on the floor in a test vote set for Wednesday.

It left Senate Republicans, who had mainly avoided the chaos that has consumed House Republicans for the past two years, looking more like their counterparts across the rotunda, rocked by division, finger-pointing and even calls from the far right for new leadership.

Senator James Lankford, Republican of Oklahoma, invested months helping to craft the border deal.

“A year ago they said, ‘We need a change in the law,’” said Mr. Lankford, frustrated by his Republican colleagues who had been up in arms about the border situation only to suddenly reject the new legislation. “Now the conversation is, ‘Just kidding, we don’t need a change in the law. We just need the president to use the laws they already have.’ That wasn’t where we were before.”

“Just gobsmacked,” Senator Brian Schatz, Democrat of Hawaii, wrote on social media. “I’ve never seen anything like it. They literally demanded specific policy, got it, and then killed it.”

As they sought to rationalize their anticipated decision to mount a filibuster against legislation they had called for, Republicans said they needed more time to digest the bill and perhaps be allowed to propose some changes. But those seemed mainly like excuses. Additional time is unlikely to be a friend of the bill as the politics surrounding it grow more volatile with the approach of this year’s elections. In past immigration fights, failed procedural votes typically doomed the effort.

Mr. Trump trashed the bipartisan proposal quickly after it was rolled out, and senators who embraced it risked running afoul of him and his supporters. Mr. Trump sees border turmoil — and the motivation it provides to conservative voters — as one of his biggest political advantages. As President Biden noted in remarks Tuesday, the former president has been feverishly stoking opposition to the new legislation.

Keep pretending like you give a shit about the border now, idiot.

I've been railing on that issue for years and you and your idiot pet Ted called me a Nazi for it.

You people suck. You change your minds about everything at the drop of a hat because you have no core values. All you have is chronic hypocrisy.

I don't even understand how either of you can live with yourselves.

Political correctness is just tyranny, with a smiley face.
