Shielding Biden from public appearances might be a rational strategy -- and that's why it's a bad sign.

https://www.natesilver.net/p/its-time-for-the-white-house-to-put

Nate doesn't get everything right in this article, but he gets a lot of it right.

One of the things he gets wrong is lying and saying the economy is great. On that issue...

Bidenflation Peaks At 17.3%, Hurting Americans

Americans continue to feel the pain of inflation amidst stagnant wage growth and high interest rates.

https://tippinsights.com/bidenflation-peaks-at-17-3-hurting-americans/

Quote:

The dark reality of Bidenomics is 17.3% inflation under the President’s watch. When he took office, inflation was at just 1.4%. Inflation has stayed above the Federal Reserve's 2% target for 35 consecutive months since March 2021.

Average hourly earnings for all employees dropped 2.0% to $11.16 in January from $11.39 in January 2021 when Biden assumed office. Despite nominal salary increases at their fastest pace in years, 58% of Americans say they are now worse off than when the President took office.

In short, prices have increased by 17.3%, while real wages have declined by 2.0%, meaning Americans have taken a 2.0% pay cut under the current administration. To put it differently, people now need 19.3% more income than they had in January 2021 to maintain their living standards. According to some estimates, Americans need an extra $11,400 a year to make ends meet.

How do Americans make up the shortfall?

The Labor Department reported earlier this month that 8.13 million Americans had multiple jobs in January, up from 7.87 million a year earlier. Their share of the U.S. workforce is 5.1%, up from 5% a year before.

Americans also use credit cards to make up for the shortfall. Credit card debt has climbed 40% over the past two years and is near $1.1. trillion. For example, Discover’s credit card customers are carrying $102 billion in balances on their credit cards, up 13% from last year. The charge-off rates and 30-day delinquency rates have also climbed.

Inflation acts as an indirect tax on citizens. Due to entrenched inflation without corresponding real wage growth, most Americans (60%) live paycheck to paycheck, cutting expenses to make ends meet. A quarter (24%) have nothing set aside for financial emergencies.

Rising rent and the end of pandemic-era protections are contributing to the homelessness crisis. Bidenflation and the Fed's eleven rate hikes to reduce inflation have made housing unaffordable for many people and caused displacements.

Therefore, it is no surprise that inflation and food prices emerged as Americans' top economic issues in a recent nationwide TIPP Poll.

My brother recently bought an overpriced condo. The reason for that is because he actually wanted to rent, but apartment rent in the area we grew up in is now $2,000 per month on average, and they won't even give you a lease for an apartment unless you're making $6,000 per month or 3 times the monthly rent. (FYI: Before Biden* was in office, the rule of thumb for housing expenses was that you shouldn't be spending more than 30% of your monthly earnings on housing... and that is a very smart rule).

My aunt was lucky enough to get herself into a church owned building after being on a list that I had her get on years ago, and it came at the perfect time because she secured it 6 months before my grandmother passed away. But early last year the church sold it to a real estate company. So this year her rent went up $100 per month and next year it will be $1,000 per month, which is double what the church was charging and it will be around 45% of her monthly earnings. If she had come in there off the street next year, she wouldn't even be accepted into the building because she's not making $3,000 per month.

And there's been no promise to the current (elderly) tenants that this price won't be increased again next year. It probably will, since average apartment rents in the area are now $1,500 per month. I've now got to try to help her get into something more affordable, and she's going to have to deal with the fact that she's going to have to move somewhere pretty far away from where she grew up to live in a place that's affordable.

Joe Biden* and his administration wrecked the economy, and yet the Elitists continue to gaslight everyone and tell you that the economy is doing great.

It might be doing great for the Media people who live in a bubble and write these articles, but it's not for everyone else. You simply can't lie to people about money, and you certainly can't lie to people about money who don't have a whole lot of it.

Fuck Democrats. Fuck Joe Biden*.

6ix, if your stupid relatives do not know who set the price for their purchases and rents, they deserve to be cheated out of their money. By the way, it is NOT Biden who sets prices.

That's not what happened here. This is no fault of theirs and no fault of anybody who's trying to get housing in Biden*'s Inflationland.

Joe Biden* and his administration and their policies ruined the economy.

I wonder if all those Gen-Z'ers are going to vote for him when they realize they're going to be stuck living in their parents house until they're 40 years old because of Democrats.

Meanwhile... My family is going to be fine. My brother is the only other person I know besides me who bought his place with cash. And my aunt has me to help her navigate this. We thought she was already set up with the church-owned apartment, but didn't see them selling it to a soulless corporation shortly after she moved into it. She can always move down south by my brother and have cheaper rent than she was getting before. I don't think I can convince her of that myself, but I think once she realizes how quickly the money starts disappearing when she's paying the hiked rent prices next year she'll be much more open to that solution to the problem. Especially true if she gets notified after that rate hike that it's going up another $500 the following year to match the current local market.

6ix, you have a multi-bedroom, multi-bathroom house with only one occupant, yourself, as a landlord. Hypothetically, you could be your aunt's landlord at $500 per month but you have, hypothetically, set the rent too high at $1 million per year because you want privacy. Actual landlords offer different potential renters different deals in different months, which change without notice. The actual landlords are seeking the highest income by constantly raising rates. Has the landlord raised the rate too high? Too few renters? Next month, lower the rent and see what happens. And for the record, Biden is not involved in setting rent. Price is strictly between the owner and the renter.

6ix, try imagining renting part of your house to your aunt as a good deed. At the moment, you don't like your aunt enough to rent space to her. But if she had enough money to pay to overcome your distaste for your auntie, what would you do? That is what real landlords do. They don't like their renters, but for enough money, they will rent.

On the contrary, I like my aunt too much to offer a rental to her here.

I'll tell you the same thing I've ever told anybody about renting out part of my house to somebody.

My house is way too big for one person, but it's not big enough for two people.

Maybe if the layout was different. Or maybe if I ever get the flooding issue under control so that I feel confident that I could finish the basement and have a bedroom down there and a fully functional 2nd bathroom and my work wouldn't be ruined in a bad flood season like we had in 2020 I could think about it.

As for your bullshit line about "Biden* doesn't set rent prices", get fucked dummy.

It's Democrat policy over the last 3 years that have lead to this. Everybody knows that Joe Biden* doesn't come up with a list that landlords have to abide by for rental prices. But everybody also knows that rent prices have become unaffordable over his short 3 years in office when they were affordable before he took office. They also know that the price of homes are completely out of reach, especially with the high interest rates that were necessary to cool off the inflation that made everything else unaffordable for them in tandem with the rent prices.

The landlords aren't "evil" bogeymen that your idiot President keeps insisting that they are. The price of everything they buy has risen out of control for 3 years just like everybody else. The loans they have out on their properties are now out of control. And property taxes just keep going up, up, up... especially on commercial real estate. All of this on top of the fact that Joe Biden* and his administration used the CDC to create an emergency situation where the landlords couldn't evict people who didn't pay rent for two years and had to eat those costs. These are the prices that need to be charged in order for the landlords not to go bankrupt in this shit economy that Joe Biden* and his administration and their policies have lead us to.

So go ahead, Democrats... Please keep lying to everybody about how great the economy is when nobody outside of your bubble can afford to live without enslaving themselves to high-interest loans and credit card debt.

See where it gets you.

I love when 6ix and Signym give long answers explaining how they imagine the world functions. They are also explaining why they have struggled mightily and failed. They misunderstand nearly everything but have erroneously convinced themselves they are wise and knowledgeable. If they were half as smart as they imagine, the world would be a paradise for them rather than a slow slog through flooded basements and doctor appointments.

And for the record, the economy is great, but not for ignoramuses and doofuses who misunderstand how the economy actually works.

Every Texas Trumptard I know brags about "doing great". I know how they are actually doing: NOT Great, but they don't know it because their idea of "great" is a series of infrequent and very small achievements without recent disasters. The Trumptards' politics wouldn't be all about anger, bitterness, estrangement, revenge for being disrespected, and "Fuck Ukraine" if they were truly doing great.

The inflationary surge we typically associate with 1980 actually started in the late '60s and didn't fully recede until the early '90s. Call it 25 years.

Our current surge began in early 2021 and receded by late 2023. That's about 2½ years.

The Highest And Lowest Inflation Rates In US History, Visualized
The highest annual inflation level America has ever seen was in 1917, when the rate reached 17.84 percent.

Last year's eight percent annual inflation rate was the highest level of inflation the US has seen since the 1980s. It has since dropped down to 3.1 percent, as of November 2023, but that figure is still significantly above the Federal Reserve's two percent target.

While 2022 set a record for US inflation in recent decades, rates of inflation have reached far more drastic heights at other points in the country's history. Madison Trust used data from Rate Inflation to visualize the highest and lowest inflation rates the US has ever seen. https://www.rateinflation.com/inflation-rate/usa-inflation-rate/

The Five Highest Annual Inflation Rates in US History
1. 1917: 17.84 percent
2. 1918: 17.28 percent
3. 1920: 15.63 percent
4. 1919: 15.24 percent
5. 1947: 14.39 percent

The Five Lowest Annual Inflation Rates in US History
1. 1921: -10.94 percent
2. 1932: -10.30 percent
3. 1931: -8.93 percent
4. 1922: -6.16 percent
5. 1933: -5.19 percent

Biden does not control prices. The prices you pay for rent, real estate purchases, food, etc. are controlled by people who are not elected. You could learn their names and punch them in the face for over-charging you, but you will not because you think Biden controls the prices. You cannot lower prices by taking the absolute risk-free action of voting in November. Voting is NOT how Capitalism sets the prices you pay, 6ix.

You are an idiot.

The prices have gone up because of Democrat policy and the insane amount of spending that has happened over the last 3 years.

Every time that printing press gets fired up, they're splitting the stock of the US dollar and your dollar is worth that much less... but you're not getting any of the split.

Too much money chasing too few goods.

But by all means... let's give another $100 Billion to Ukraine.

And keep handing out those $10,000 cash cards to illegal alien invaders in the big Democrat run cities.

Anti-Ukraine rhetoric has saturated right-wing media. Now it is helping to deliver actual war victories to Putin.

10:09 AM EST, Wed February 21, 2024

While the Republican Party was once vehemently hawkish toward Russia, viewing the post-Soviet country as its chief adversary on the international stage, it has softened considerably in recent years and much of the party actively opposes sending additional dollars to Ukraine to continue fighting Russia.

It was little more than a decade ago when Mitt Romney, then the party’s standard-bearer, famously declared Russia to be “our number one geopolitical foe.” In the years since, the party has dramatically changed its tune on Russia. A CNN poll conducted last summer found that a staggering 71% of Republicans do not support additional aid to thwart Putin’s war on Ukraine.

Much of the GOP’s softening toward Russia is owed to a near-total reversal in rhetoric from right-wing media personalities and outlets, prompted in large part by Donald Trump’s ascension to power in GOP politics. While the biggest players in right-wing media once fervently championed the foreign policy doctrines of the neo-conservatives, they now follow in the footsteps of Trump.

This transition is perhaps best exemplified by Tucker Carlson. The former Fox News host was once sharply critical of Putin, characterizing him in no uncertain terms as a cruel “dictator.” But in recent years, Carlson has reversed his stance, flooding the right-wing information space — which he once reigned as king over — with pro-Putin rhetoric that effectively amounts to Russian propaganda. Carlson’s stance was put on display in stark fashion recently when he traveled to Moscow to conduct a widely denounced softball chat with Putin and then proceeded to record a series of propaganda videos touting Russia’s supposed greatness.

While figures like Carlson have promoted Russia and Putin, they have simultaneously trashed Ukraine and its leader Volodymyr Zelensky, promoting conspiracy theories that the country interfered in the 2016 election and was hiding biological weapons labs. Carlson, for example, has likened Zelensky to vermin and vigorously spoken out against U.S. support for Ukraine. Right-wing commentators like Carlson have questioned why taxpayer dollars are being spent to help Ukraine defend its borders when the U.S. struggles to secure its own southern border (though a recent bipartisan bill intended to tackle both issues was rejected by hardline Republicans.)

The rhetoric has had a considerable impact on the views of the party, which is now being reflected by its elected leaders. A straight line can effectively be drawn between the commentary and the failure of the House GOP to pass funding providing Kyiv with critical funding and weaponry to counter Putin’s aggression.

“The GOP’s shift away from support for Ukraine shows how in the Republican Party, everything flows downstream from the obsessions and priorities of right-wing propagandists,” Matt Gertz, a senior fellow at the progressive watchdog Media Matters, told me Tuesday. “Tucker Carlson and his ilk wanted to back Putin’s invasion, their relentless lies won over the party’s base, and ultimately its elected officials have adopted their position.”

“We’ve seen this same pattern time and again: Fox News and the like take basic concepts like ‘it’s a good idea to get vaccinated against the coronavirus’ and ‘the January 6 insurrection was bad’ and turn them on their heads — and Republican elites inevitably follow,” Gertz added. “Governing based on what gets ratings for B.S. artists is no way to run a country.”

Ukraine would have had economic relations with both the EU and the EAEU nations, Nazis would not have flourished, Russian speakers and Ukrainian speakers would have been both allowed to live in peace.

Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaparozhzhia, and Kherson would still be a part of Ukraine. Ukraine would be a neutral buffer state, enjoying trade between blocs.

Ukraine would still be a democracy and be billing Russia for gas flows, and making $$$. True, it would still be a corrupt oligarchy, but maybe Ukrainians would be able to solve that in time.

Russia and China would not be rammed together as allies and partners against a common enemy. Russian gas would continue to flow through Europe, Germany would be making bank on its auto industry in Russia, the "global south" wouldn't be sidling up to Russia, everyone would have been a lot happier.

The idea of using Ukraine and sanctions to destabilize Russia has been an unmitigated disaster for the EU and UK, and most of all for Ukraine.

Time to recognize the clusterfuck for what it is, and go into reverse gear instead of doubling down (again and again) on failure.
