Brenda was talking in TAGLOG on HOME page about

“ I did come home smelling like onions. Yuck!“

Any other suggestions?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I think the article hit them all. I like to cut onions cold. The smell doesn't bother me, but it bothers everyone else. When I cook them in the range, I turn on the kitchen fan.
Coating them with a little olive oil, salting them and roasting them in a convection oven also keeps the smell corralled.

Boss doesn't roast onions. She just likes them fried and sometimes in olive oil but mostly canola oil. Also she always has the stove fan on. The onions are never cold when cut up and she leaves the cut up pieces out until they are cooked. So the smell and the oils as I said linger in the air.

Oh, too bad. There are plenty of ways to corral the smell!

Since onion smell tends to linger on clothes and hair, I suppose you could toss your clothes in a dryer. Or hang them out on your patio for a half hour or so.
Hair?
Either time or a hair dryer or hair wash.
May not be worth all the effort tho.

My hair doesn't seem to hang onto the smell, my shirts on the other hand. I usually take off my top shirt and work in a t-shirt that I can throw into the wash when I get in.

Hitting a shower when I get in isn't worth the effort and sometimes the odor isn't too bad and I can live with it. Just depends on how many onions she is cooking with.

Maybe put a bowl over them. Rinse the knife and cutting board.

Maybe put them in sealed ziplock bag.

Febreze. You can pour it in a small sprayer. I keep some in my car.

Cover with a paper towel…not sure if that would help.

She leaves them on the cutting board and I always wash everything once the onions are cooking to get rid of the smell.

She does that with any onions that she isn't going to use.

I cannot use any product like Febreze as I will react to the odors in it that treat the smell. I have allergies to heavily scented products.

I am no expert.

But I have been told, by experts, that the secrets are:
keep the knife very, very sharp.
pushing down on the onion only crushes it, squeezes it - forcing out the juice and odor/aroma.
moving the knife forward/backward while pushing down allows the knife to slice instead of squash - supposedly this reduces the emission of juice.

It was said that actually slicing an onion does not cause the smells or tears, but only the smooshing is what causes the problem.
I don't know if all this actually works, but it made sense to me long ago.

This kind of thing happens all the time now here. It's a shame. I tried to rate 1 to 10 a post by ANOMYIOUSE1. No can do.

Sorry ANONYMOUS1. I wonder if I've been misreading your name all along.

I have been looking at the pictures from time to time.

Dear daughter and I were talking about exciting new TV series nipped in the bud, and Firefly is at the top of my list. It's such a shame that such a rich, inventive, unexpected show never had a chance to develop. Movies just aren't the same bc they have to force a plot development to resolution in such a short period of time.

Sigh.

I think I'm gonna rewatch my DVDs now.....

Very funny. I also don't like beans and never eat them now as an adult.

I am just starting to avoid them. It's the sugar content.

I did forget to mention covering them with a pot lid, or one of those domes that go in the microwave. Somebody did mention a bowl.

Does baking soda absorb the smell? We deodorized smoke damage with that. It didn't give me allergy problems.

For me it has always been the texture and taste of them. Just yuck!

I just saw on Chive TV some kid cutting onions. He was wearing a hoodie with a drawstring. He put a glass pot lid over his face, tucking the edge inside the hoodie, all around. tightened the drawstring to hold the pot lid in place.

I doubt this is useful for Brenda, but thought I'd share.

So did the kid act like it worked?

I wonder if one of those Covid face shields would help…inside a hoodie…or without.
