The Don Lemon Interview Accomplished One Thing

The truth about Elon Musk has never been clearer.

So … what did we learn from these two, and this sorry spectacle? Well, it may have been a useful exercise in hopefully dispensing, once and for all, any supposition that Elon “Free Speech” Musk is actually interested in advancing that democratic principle. If Don Lemon brings up things that Musk himself has posted? That’s censorship. But if Musk cancels an agreement with Lemon, after his company spent a full year wining and dining the anchor, because his feelings were hurt? That’s … free speech, apparently.

Opinion | Elon Musk Is Preoccupied With Something He Doesn’t Understand

By Jamelle Bouie | March 23, 2024

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/23/opinion/elon-musk-great-replacement
.html

There is no particular mystery to unravel around the political views of Elon Musk, the billionaire technology and social media executive. He is — and for some time, has been — on the far right wing of American politics. He is an enthusiastic purveyor of far-right conspiracy theories, using his platform on the website X to spread a worldview that is as extreme as it is untethered from reality.

Musk is especially preoccupied with the racial makeup of the country and the alleged deficiency of nonwhites in important positions. He blames the recent problems at Boeing, for example, on its efforts to diversify its work force, despite easily accessible and widely publicized accounts of a dangerous culture of cost-cutting and profit-seeking at the company.

“Experts and critics say that Boeing’s woes have been years in the making,” reported CNN in January, “some pointing to the result of a shift in corporate culture that started at the top and put profits ahead of the safety and engineering prowess for which it was once praised, placing not only its future, but the passengers on its planes, at grave risk.”

Is diversity the problem at Boeing, or is it a shortsighted obsession with maximizing shareholder value at the expense of quality and safety? Musk, a wealthy shareholder in various companies — including his own, Tesla, which is being sued by Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for allegedly allowing racist abuse of some of its Black employees — says it’s diversity.

“It will take an airplane crashing and killing hundreds of people for them to change this crazy policy of DIE,” Musk wrote in January, deliberately misspelling the acronym D.E.I., meaning diversity, equity and inclusion.

Musk’s current obsession, as Greg Sargent observes in The New Republic, is the “great replacement,” a far-right conspiracy theory that liberal elites in the United States are deliberately opening the southern border to nonwhite immigration from Mexico, South and Central America in order to replace the nation’s white majority and secure permanent control of its political institutions.
https://newrepublic.com/article/180007/elon-musk-great-replacement-the
ory-hate-video

On X, Musk recently pinned a post to a slickly produced video that purports to expose a “Democrat open borders plan to entrench single-party rule,” in which Democrats shepherd millions of people into the United States and “keep them in the country at all costs.” Musk says, “This is actually happening!” The video had, at the time of this writing, well over 50 million views.

Musk is far from the first person to push the “great replacement” theory. It was featured in ads released by Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, a top Republican in the House. “Radical Democrats are planning their most aggressive move yet: a PERMANENT ELECTION INSURRECTION,” said one version of the advertisement. “Their plan to grant amnesty to 11 MILLION illegal immigrants will overthrow our current electorate and create a permanent liberal majority in Washington.”

The “great replacement” was part of the centerpiece of Tucker Carlson’s message to viewers during his time on Fox News. It is touted by a number of anti-immigrant, white nationalist and white supremacist groups. It was featured prominently at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017, where neo-Nazis chanted “Jews will not replace us.” And it has inspired at least four separate mass shootings, including the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh (11 killed), the 2019 Christchurch shootings in New Zealand (51 killed), the El Paso shooting the same year (23 killed) and the 2022 supermarket shooting in Buffalo (10 killed).

It should go without saying that the “great replacement” is idiotic. There is no “open border.” There is no effort to “replace” the white population of the United States. Racial diversity is not a plot against the nation’s political institutions. And the underlying assumption of the “great replacement” — that, until recently, the United States was a racially and culturally homogenous nation — is nonsense.

But beyond this obvious critique lies a more subtle problem with the “great replacement” conceit. It rests as much on a racial understanding of political identity as it does a racial understanding of national identity.

As Musk and his like-minded paranoiacs see it, nonwhite voters would necessarily be Democrats. With each new “illegal,” the Democratic Party gets a new vote. But there’s nothing about immigration status or melanin content that demands liberal politics. And in fact, there’s growing evidence of a rightward drift among nonwhite voters, particularly those of Hispanic origin. If nonwhite voters are up for grabs — if their partisan identities are more contingent than fixed — then it’s also true that Republicans and conservatives can simply compete for their allegiance the way they would for members of any other group.

There lies the rub. To compete for voters is to believe in one of the fundamental truths of democracy: that there’s no such thing as a permanent majority. Just the opposite, in fact. Majorities in a democratic country are variable and fluid for the simple reason that individuals themselves are variable and fluid. They contradict themselves. They contain multitudes. They have different and competing values and interests that fall in and out of salience depending on the situation or political context. Your opponent may have assembled a majority to beat you, but you can — in the next election — assemble a different majority to win for yourself. The only constant is that nothing is settled or set in place.

To believe that the “great replacement” is true is to reject the dynamism of democratic society. It is to believe, instead, in a zero-sum world of immutable identities and the hierarchies that necessarily follow. There is no hope for persuasion — no hope for politics, even — if people can be only one thing.

It’s no surprise, then, that the rise of “great replacement” theory has happened in tandem with the Republican Party’s turn toward authoritarianism in the personage of Donald Trump. If there’s no persuasion, then the only thing that’s left is domination and the imperative, then, to dominate others before they can dominate you.

Judge tosses Elon Musk’s case - March 25, 2024

“Sometimes it is unclear what is driving a litigation,” wrote District Judge Charles Breyer, of the US District Court for the Northern District of California, in the order’s opening lines. “Other times, a complaint is so unabashedly and vociferously about one thing that there can be no mistaking that purpose.”

“This case represents the latter circumstance,” Breyer continued. He also said Musk was litigating in bad faith and denied his company an opportunity to amend and refile its case.

Because Musk is an asshole with too much money and time on his hands, but nothing to do, his lawyers will find a way to continue litigating.

No surprise that Musk loses in court to everybody he comes in contact with (including his children). They all hate him, even the judges who try very hard to remain impartial, because Musk is a huge asshole, much like Trump.

Elon Musk Didn’t Want His Latest Deposition Released. Here It Is.

Apr 8, 2024, 01:00 PM EDT

Elon Musk was deposed last month over his role in allegedly promoting a false conspiracy theory that a 22-year-old Jewish man participated in a neo-Nazi brawl.

Musk tried to keep the deposition from going public, and perhaps for good reason: It did not go well for him.

The lawsuit alleges that Musk used his colossal social media platform to amplify a false far-right conspiracy theory linking 22-year-old Ben Brody to a brawl in Oregon between the neo-Nazi group Rose City Nationalists and the Proud Boys, a neo-fascist fight club.

Musk amplified the conspiracy theory repeatedly to his more than 180 million followers, suggesting Brody was a fresh-faced federal agent pretending to be a neo-Nazi in a “false flag situation,” a phrase used to suggest a harmful event was deliberately set up to misrepresent a group or person.

He also claimed that he had no idea that Brody had requested he retract his “false flag” posts and that despite millions of followers seeing his posts, he doesn’t agree that Brody “has been meaningfully harmed by this.” According to Musk, it’s “rare” for incidents like this one to have “a meaningful negative impact” on the victims.

Did Elon Musk fib about SpaceX's Starlink breaking even? (yes)

By Victor Tangermann | Apr 10, 1:57 PM EDT

https://futurism.com/the-byte/huge-problem-spacex-starlink-profit

In a brief announcement on his social media platform last year, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk celebrated that the company's Starlink broadband service had "achieved breakeven cash flow."

"Starlink is also now a majority of all active satellites and will have launched a majority of all satellites cumulatively from Earth by next year," he said at the time.

But according to a damning new report by Bloomberg, Musk may have once again rigged the numbers in his favor by greatly underplaying the costs involved in launching the satellites, when in reality the company is losing "hundreds of dollars on each of the millions of ground terminals it ships."

According to Bloomberg's sources, SpaceX's accounting was "more of an art than a science" and the much-hyped system isn't actually profitable, despite Musk's assurances.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-04-10/is-elon-musk-s-star
link-profitable-spacex-satellites-are-money-losers?sref=YfHlo0rL

The company has kept its financials close to its chest, especially while fundraising. During a March press conference, SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen appeared cagey, telling reporters in a carefully worded comment that "I don’t know that I want to quantify those numbers, but we are in positive cash flow and profitable territory for our satellite business now."

In short, is SpaceX's Starlink business cashflow positive, as Musk claims, or merely in "profitable territory"? The distinction could make all the difference for Musk's outsize plans for space colonization. The mercurial CEO has long argued that the internet satellite broadband arm of his space company will provide the funding necessary to get humans to Mars. According to Bloomberg, Starlink represents more than half of SpaceX's revenue this year.

As of now, SpaceX has launched 5,600 satellites into low-Earth orbit and is planning to launch tens of thousands more.

Despite eclipsing the total number of all operating satellites in Earth's orbit, Starlink isn't just struggling to cut even. Experts are concerned that trying to provide the entire globe with internet via satellites — instead of expanding coverage with cell towers where needed — could prove difficult, with speeds already beginning to decrease in 2022.

In other words, SpaceX will have to pump out untold numbers of satellites to keep up with quickly growing bandwidth demands.

More bad news. According to Bloomberg, all major US airlines have rejected SpaceX's Starlink to provide internet service on flights, though an exact reason as to why remains unclear.

Nonetheless, SpaceX has exceeded expectations when it comes to generating revenue over the years. Sales could grow from $4.7 billion a year ago to $15 billion this year, per Bloomberg's sources.

SpaceX may end up spinning off its internet service with a potential IPO. But that's still years out, according to company officials.

Is Musk's plan to colonize Mars nutty?

Getting to Mars isn’t enough: Why staying alive will be the biggest challenge.

SpaceX’s Starship is projected to be ready for a trip to Mars in the next 5 years. But are we? Colonizing space in the next few decades may seem like a forgone conclusion, but let's take a more honest look at the science.

An honest look at the science is exactly what Kelly and Zach Weinersmith, the authors of A City on Mars, are offering. These space optimists turned into space realists while researching the possibility of human habitats in outer space.

The environments we would encounter on other planets aren’t just harsher versions of what we have on earth. In some ways they’re actively hostile to any living being, more hostile than practically any environment on earth. From dramatic temperature swings to deadly cosmic radiation to bone degradation, here are the real – and often overlooked – factors we need to contend with if we’re going to be able to successfully incubate human life on another planet.

The only new model in Tesla’s lineup doesn’t have sufficient demand to run all the shifts? That’s very troubling but not surprising. I guess the decision to launch an $80,000-120,000 niche truck that’s worst in class in every regard except acceleration wasn’t the best plan. Maybe instead they should’ve been focusing on drastically improving the core lineup and adding additional models that would be easier to produce and potentially sell in the hundreds of thousands to a million units per annum. If the decision to can the $25,000 car in exchange for a “robotaxi” is even the least bit true the future of Tesla looks bleak. Robotaxis are years and years away not only due to their technical challenges that are so far from being solved but also due to government approvals and the market’s acceptance of such a product.

Maybe Elon will also learn that the anti-vax anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists he’s trying to be buddy-buddy with on Twitter aren’t exactly the EV buying type either. All he’s doing is turning off the people that actually have and would buy a Tesla. Elon needs to go. It would be best if he left on his own but that’s extremely unlikely to happen. The board is full of Elon apologists but maybe if they see their portfolio crashing that will motivate them to make a move they otherwise wouldn’t have done on a moral or ethical basis.

EVPaddy commented:
Musk has to go, yes. But the share price basically can‘t be saved that way either. It has been inflated by Musk‘s lies over many years. It will only know one way for a long time.

This was a crazy decision Musk made:

Elon Musk reportedly dismissed almost the entire Supercharger division of Tesla, including its head Rebecca Tinucci, after Tinucci refused to lay off workers beyond the planned numbers.

What Happened: Tinucci reportedly had a meeting with Musk to discuss the future of the charging network. This meeting was subsequent to a previous round of layoffs, where Tinucci had reduced the staff by 15% to 20%. However, Musk was not satisfied with the presentation and demanded additional layoffs. When Tinucci opposed it, arguing that it would negatively impact the business fundamentals, Musk reacted by terminating her and the entire 500-member team.

ger-chief-rebecca-tinucci-and-her-entire-team-after-she-refused-to-lay-off

Time has passed and the crazy Musk decision is being partially undone:

Tesla Inc. has begun hiring back some of the almost 500 members of its Supercharging team that Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk dismissed late last month. Chief among the personnel who have returned is Max de Zegher, the director of charging for North America, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. De Zegher was one of the top managers after Rebecca Tinucci, the senior director Musk fired late last month along with virtually everyone else in the charging group.

Elon Musk - Dead at 52 - Says There Is No Need for Misinformation Laws

Billionaire Elon Musk, found dead in his home last night, says it is not the role of social media networks to determine what is true or not.

The Tesla and X owner, who is believed to have died from a heroin overdose while watching animal porn, said he would fight any attempts to stop the spread of misinformation on his platform.

Police revealed that Musk, who says it is up to the public to decide what was true or not, had been fighting incest charges at the time of his death.

Elon Musk's child is not confused about Elon: Musk’s recent statements crossed a line, she said.

“I think he was under the assumption that I wasn’t going to say anything and I would just let this go unchallenged,” Wilson said in a phone interview. “Which I’m not going to do, because if you’re going to lie about me, like, blatantly to an audience of millions, I’m not just gonna let that slide.”

Wilson said that, for as long as she could remember, Musk hasn’t been a supportive father. She said he was rarely present in her life, leaving her and her siblings to be cared for by their mother or by nannies even though Musk had joint custody, and she said Musk berated her when he was present.

“He was cold,” she said. “He’s very quick to anger. He is uncaring and narcissistic.”

I Took a Ride in a ‘Self-Driving’ Tesla and Never Once Felt Safe

The tech in Elon Musk’s electric vehicles is supposed to prevent accidents, but in several cases, it nearly caused one

August 19, 2024

https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/self-driving-tes
la-drive-1235079210
/

When the “Full Self-Driving” setting is enabled in a Tesla, according to the automaker’s own description, the car “attempts to drive to your destination by following curves in the road, stopping at and negotiating intersections, making left and right turns, navigating roundabouts, and entering/exiting highways.”

“Attempts” would be the crucial word here, as I learned during an occasionally harrowing demonstration of FSD around surface streets and freeways in Los Angeles. While it’s true that the technology manages to impress at first, it doesn’t take long for severe and dangerous shortcomings to emerge. And, contrary to claims from exaggeration-prone Tesla CEO Elon Musk, it certainly didn’t seem safer than having an average human driver at the wheel.

One morning in early August, I hop into a 2018 Tesla Model 3 owned by Dan O’Dowd, founder of the Dawn Project. Easily the most outspoken critic of Tesla’s so-called autonomous driver-assistance features, O’Dowd — a billionaire who also co-founded Green Hills Software and made his fortune developing secure, hacker-proof systems for the U.S. military and government — established the Dawn Project to campaign “to ban unsafe software from safety critical systems” spanning healthcare, communications, power grids, and transportation. For several years, Tesla has been his primary target; O’Dowd has orchestrated one safety test after another, mounted a single-issue campaign for Senate, and run expensive Super Bowl commercials to spread his warnings against the company’s FSD software.

We experience the pitfalls of Tesla Vision several times during an hour-long drive. (A Tesla’s eight external cameras have a relatively low resolution of 1.2 megapixels. Higher-end iPhones have cameras that offer a resolution of 48 megapixels.) Once, the car tries to steer us into plastic bollard posts it apparently can’t see. At another moment, driving through a residential neighborhood, it nearly rams a recycling bin out for collection — I note that no approximate shape even appears on the screen. We also narrowly avoid a collision when trying to turn left at a stop sign: the Tesla hasn’t noticed a car with the right of way zooming toward us from the left at around 40 mph. Maltin explains that this kind of error is a function of where the side cameras are placed, in the vehicle’s B pillars, the part of the frame that separates the front and rear windows. They’re so far back that when a Tesla is stopped at an intersection, it can’t really see oncoming traffic on the left or right, and tries to creep forward, sometimes gunning it when it (falsely or not) senses an opportunity to move in. A human driver, of course, can peer around corners. And if a Tesla with FSD engaged does suddenly notice a car approaching from either side, it can’t reverse to get out of harm’s way.

After a while, you start to anticipate these mistakes. Maltin, who has plenty of experience testing FSD, frequently tenses up if a complicated or unusual driving task suddenly presents itself. But I notice a certain hesitancy and what I can only characterize as indecisiveness in the Tesla itself, like you’re being chauffeured by a student driver. It reliably slams on the brakes too hard instead of rolling through yellow lights, for example, and swerves unpredictably between lanes as if it can’t decide which it prefers. On the other hand, it operates well enough for five-minute stretches that you can be lulled into complacency.

Elon Musk’s Lawyers Accidentally Sent an Incredibly Sensitive Email to the Wrong People, Then Demanded They Delete It

All in a day's work for Team Elon.

Don't Look Back in Anger

In the midst of his chaotic purchase of Twitter, Elon Musk's attorneys accidentally sent a bunch of people the wrong email about his financial backing — and then aggressively demanded the recipients delete it.

As New York Times reporters Kate Conger and Ryan Mac note in a Vanity Fair-published excerpt from their new book about the Twitter buyout, the billionaire's team made the massive gaffe while it was still unclear whether Musk was actually going to pull off the sale.

"At one point, Musk’s lawyers... accidentally sent Twitter’s finance team a full spreadsheet of all the people and investment firms from which they solicited money," Conger and Mac wrote in "Character Limit," their forthcoming book about the deal. "That screwup was immediately followed by a legal threat to the Twitter recipients to delete the email and its contents."

Around the same time as the deal was in limbo in mid-2022, Twitter's financial officers had, as the book notes, developed a dark way to handle the uncertainty of Musk's closing.

"Members of Twitter’s finance teams had adopted a gallows humor approach to the deal," the reporters described, "and made a joke of trying to track Musk’s money."

just say no to Elon Musk —

Tesla Full Self Driving requires human intervention every 13 miles

It gave pedestrians room but ran red lights and crossed into oncoming traffic.

"Its seeming infallibility in anyone's first five minutes of Full Self Driving (FSD) operation breeds a sense of awe that unavoidably leads to dangerous complacency. When drivers are operating with FSD engaged, driving with their hands in their laps or away from the steering wheel is incredibly dangerous. As you will see in the videos, the most critical moments of FSD miscalculation are split-second events that even professional drivers, operating with a test mindset, must focus on catching.”

"Whether it's a lack of computing power, an issue with buffering as the car gets "behind" on calculations, or some small detail of surrounding assessment, it's impossible to know. These failures are the most insidious. But there are also continuous failures of simple programming inadequacy, such as only starting lane changes toward a freeway exit a scant tenth of a mile before the exit itself, that handicaps the system and casts doubt on the overall quality of its base programming."

How Musk threatens America’s national security, and what must be done

His incitement to assassinate America’s commander-in-chief is only the most recent illustration

By Robert Reich | Sep 26, 2024

https://robertreich.substack.com/p/how-elon-musk-threatens-national

Shortly after the apparent second assassination attempt against Trump, Elon Musk responded in a now deleted post: “And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala ?? ????”

Musk later said his post was intended as a joke. But it could be interpreted as a call to murder Biden and Harris — at least by one of the 198 million followers of Musk who initially received it. Presumably this is why the Secret Service is investigating it.

Under 18 U.S. Code Section 871, threatening a president or vice president or inciting someone to harm them is a felony that can result in a large fine and up to five years in prison.

Yet even as Musk posted a potential death threat against the sitting commander-in-chief, his multiple defense contracts with the U.S. government have given him access to highly sensitive information.

Reportedly, Musk has been given security clearance notwithstanding his admitted use of drugs (Musk says he has submitted to random drug testing at the request of the government), including smoking weed in public and using ketamine (for which he claims to have a prescription).

Quite apart from the drugs, when was the last time the U.S. government gave access to sensitive national security information to someone who posted a potential death threat against the president and vice president, even if he later called it a joke?

Underlying this is a broader question: When in history has one unelected individual held such sway over American national security?

Musk’s SpaceX has nearly total control of the world’s satellite internet through its Starlink unit. With little regulation or oversight, Musk has already put more than 4,500 Starlink satellites into orbit around the globe, accounting for more than half of all active satellites. Musk plans to have as many as 42,000 satellites in orbit in coming years.

Space X and its Starlink system have become strategically critical to American security. Starlink is providing connectivity to the U.S. Navy. The U.S. Space Force signed a $70 million contract late last year to provide it with military-grade low-earth-orbit satellite capabilities. According to Reuters, the National Reconnaissance Office, which oversees U.S. spy satellites, has a $1.8 billion contract with SpaceX.

This gives Musk — the richest person in the world — remarkable power. Single-handedly, he can decide to shut down a country’s access to Starlink and the internet. He also can also gain access to sensitive information gathered by Starlink. “Between, Tesla, Starlink & Twitter, I may have more real-time global economic data in one head than anyone ever,” Musk tweeted in April 2023.

Meanwhile, NASA has increasingly outsourced spaceflight projects to SpaceX, including billions in contracts for multiple moon trips and $843 million to build a vehicle that will take the International Space Station out of commission.

Conflicts of interest between Musk’s ventures around the world and U.S. national security abound, and they are multiplying.

When Putin attacked Ukraine, Musk and SpaceX’s Starlink provided Ukraine with internet access, enabling the country to plan attacks and defend itself. (This was not a charitable move by Musk; most of the 20,000 terminals in the country were funded by outside sources such as the U.S. government, the United Kingdom, and Poland).

But in the fall of 2022, when Ukraine entered territory contested by Russia, Musk and Space X abruptly severed the connectivity. Musk explained at the time that “Starlink was barred from turning on satellite beams in Crimea at the time, because doing so would violate U.S. sanctions against Russia!”

But who was Musk to decide what actions would or would not violate U.S. sanctions?

In fact, Musk was trying to push Ukraine to agree to Russia’s terms for ending the war.

At a conference in Aspen attended by business and political figures, Musk appeared to support Putin. “He was onstage, and he said, ‘We should be negotiating. Putin wants peace — we should be negotiating peace with Putin,’” Reid Hoffman, co-founder and executive chairman of LinkedIn, recalled. Musk seemed to have “bought what Putin was selling, hook, line, and sinker.”

Soon thereafter, Musk tweeted a proposal for his own peace plan, calling for referenda to redraw the borders of Ukraine and grant Russia control of Crimea. In subsequent tweets, Musk portrayed a Russian victory as virtually inevitable and attached maps highlighting eastern Ukrainian territories, some of which, he argued, “prefer Russia.”

U.S. foreign policy experts also worry about conflicts of interest posed by Musk’s acquisition of Twitter (now X), given his business relationships and communications with the Chinese government. China has used X for disinformation campaigns.

Some are concerned that China may have leverage over Musk due to his giant Tesla factory in Shanghai, which accounts for over half of Tesla’s global deliveries and the bulk of its profits, and the battery factory he’s building there. “Elon Musk has deep financial exposure to China,” warned Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Most of these concerns, by the way, came before Musk reactivated the accounts of conspiracy theorists and white nationalists on X and began pushing his own right-wing narrative on the platform, and before he announced his support for Trump in the upcoming election and posted a potential incitement to assassinate Biden and Harris.

Elon Musk poses a clear and present danger to American national security. The sooner the U.S. government revokes his security clearance, terminates its contracts with him and the entities he controls, and builds our own alternatives to Starlink and Space X, the safer we will be.

All That Twitters | Who Owns a Piece of Elon Musk?

By Jacob Silverman | September 26, 2024

https://thebaffler.com/latest/all-that-twitters-silverman

It cost $44 billion for Elon Musk to buy Twitter—a transaction that he initiated, then tried to back out of, before acceding under legal pressure. It was a costly acquisition, highly leveraged. The money was cobbled together from $20 billion in Musk’s assets, $13 billion in loans from big banks (which now can’t move them off their books), $6 billion in loans to Musk himself, and more than $7 billion in commitments from investors who would be shareholders of the new private enterprise.

In a May 2022 SEC filing, Musk listed a number of his planned Twitter co-investors and their equity stakes, so we had some idea who was helping him buy the company. Other reporting—including a public show of support from Saudi Prince al-Waleed bin Talal and text messages produced for a Delaware court that revealed a $1 billion commitment from billionaire tech luminary Larry Ellison—helped fill in the picture. But once Twitter went private that October and Musk set about slashing and burning the divisions of the company that offended him, there was no definitive list of its shareholders, or the names of the trusts, funds, LLCs, and other corporate entities holding their shares.

This August, a federal judge ruled in favor of a motion filed on my behalf by Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press to unseal a list of shareholders that had been filed by the company, since renamed X, under seal as part of one of the many civil lawsuits that it faces in the wake of Musk’s disastrous turn at the helm. We now have a complete list—dated April 2023—of who helped Musk acquire Twitter. I’ve argued that this list is important for a number of reasons, but here’s just one: according to the Washington Post, anyone who invested more than $250 million received special access to sensitive data about the company and its users. Who pitched in that much? Saudi Arabia, Qatar, a mysterious UAE-based venture capital firm, a lawless crypto exchange, and CIA contractor Ellison. I’m sure they’re happy with their access. What follows is a rough taxonomy of X shareholders—a half-serious attempt to categorize and account for the moneymen helping boost Musk Inc. It takes a lot of cash to prop up an oligarch, and some of it comes from unsavory sources.

Elon Musk

Elon Musk is an alleged horse enthusiast and compulsive shitposter who was one of several executive producers on the Hollywood film Thank You for Smoking. He is also the chief technology officer and executive chairman of X and its majority owner through the Elon Musk Revocable Trust, dated July 22, 2003.

Friends of Elon

Afshar Partners, LP

Omead Afshar is a Musk loyalist and fixer. As a Tesla executive, he was investigated internally for accounting issues related to the order of “a special type of glass,” possibly for Musk’s personal use. (We’ve all done it.) He was later parachuted into a high-level position at SpaceX overseeing the Starship deep-space rocket program.

Dayton Family Enterprises, LLC and Dayton Family Investments, LLC Sky Dayton is a tech investor and the founder of Earthlink, a formerly massive dotcom-era dial-up internet service provider that gobbled up smaller tech companies and pivoted to reselling their internet services under its own brand before being acquired by a private equity firm. My ninety-five-year-old relative still pays a monthly fee for an Earthlink email address—just the email address—that she can no longer access but can’t cancel. Congratulations to Sky Dayton.

Lawrence J. Ellison Revocable Trust Larry Ellison is the eighty-year-old founder of Oracle. Larry Ellison started his business with help from the CIA and is the second richest person in the world after Elon Musk. Larry Ellison owns the Hawaiian island of Lanai, where he invited Musk to come cleanse himself of drugs. Larry Ellison strategized about how to overturn the 2020 election. Larry Ellison promises a world where “citizens will be on their best behavior because we are constantly recording and reporting everything that’s going on.” Larry Ellison will bury us all.

Scott Nolan Not the Hall of Fame Phillies third baseman, Scott Nolan was an early SpaceX engineer and is now a partner at Founders Fund, Peter Thiel’s investment club for Lord of the Rings enthusiasts who are curious about technofascism.

Steve Davis A longtime Musk loyalist and Ayn Rand-quoting yogurt-maker, Steve Davis is officially the CEO and president of The Boring Company, Musk’s vanity tunneling and earthworks company, which has completed one public project: a 1.7-mile tunnel for cars in Las Vegas. Davis was part of the brain trust assembled from Musk’s corporate fiefdom to manage his chaotic acquisition of Twitter. At the time, Davis and his wife had a newborn baby, and the three of them spent nights sleeping at the Twitter office in San Francisco—an arrangement that led to Davis and his wife being subpoenaed in at least one lawsuit by disgruntled ex-Twitter employees. The baby has not yet been called to testify.

The Pershing Square Foundation The Pershing Square Foundation is a nonprofit entity created by Bill Ackman, a Twitter essayist and leading wife guy whose hedge fund holds a large stake in Chipotle. In its 2022 IRS filing, the foundation, which has $474 million in assets, dispensed more than two million dollars in grants for cancer research, along with $200,000 for the William A. Ackman Friends of Rowing travel fund for Harvard’s rowing team. It listed its ownership of X Holdings as worth $10 million.

VCs

Venture capitalists are winners of the passive income lottery, taking big bets with other people’s money and pocketing handsome fees while knowing that most of their investments will fail. Some of these firms, like Andreessen Horowitz (also known as a16z), could also be placed in the Gulfies category, since they receive hundreds of millions of dollars from Saudi Arabia and other dictatorships to invest on their behalf in U.S. tech startups. In that way, a16z and other VCs serve as laundromats for a corrupt class of kleptocrats, princelings, and other global elites.

The VCs listed here are practically all Friends of Elon. There are few unexpected names in this category, but what stands out is how some of these firms spread out their investment among multiple funds. CNK Fund IV, L.P., for instance, is an Andreessen Horowitz crypto fund. Do the partners who supplied the capital for CNK Fund know that they’re now invested in X?

In alphabetical order: 8VC Opportunities Fund II, L.P.; Andreessen Horowitz LSV Fund III, L.P., CNK Fund IV, L.P.; Andreessen Horowitz LSV Fund III, L.P.; DFJ GROWTH IV, L.P., DFJ GROWTH IV PARALLEL FUND, LLC, DFJ GROWTH X-I, L.P.; Gigafund 0.21, LP; Manhattan Venture Partners X LLC; Mirae Asset Innovation X ONE, LLC, Mirae Asset Project X Fund I, LP; SCGE Fund, L.P., SCGGF III – U.S./India Management, L.P., SCHF (M) PV, L.P., SC US/E Expansion Fund I Management, L.P., SC US/E Expansion Fund I Management, L.P., Sequoia Capital Fund, L.P., SC CDA1 LLC.

Crypto Guys

Jack Dorsey Tr Ua 12/08/2010, Jack Dorsey Revocable Trust, Jack Dorsey Remainder LLC Former Twitter CEO Jack Patrick Dorsey is an anarcho-capitalist RFK Jr. supporter who longs for a world run on ayahuasca, Bitcoin, and freedom. Until he achieves that dream, he must content himself with a multibillion-dollar fortune built on mass surveillance of the users of the platform he helped found, and his share of Block, a global payments company.

Olivier Janssens A wealthy Bitcoiner, Janssens once partnered with a guy nicknamed Bitcoin Jesus to “[purchase] sovereignty from a government to create the world’s first Free Society.” Janssens’s Free Society hasn’t materialized, but he’s become a pitchman for a private jet company that takes payment in Bitcoin. His friend Bitcoin Jesus is awaiting possible extradition to the United States on criminal charges for failing to pay $48 million in taxes.

Binance Capital Management Co., Ltd One of the more laughably corrupt companies around, Binance is also the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange by volume. Its cofounder and CEO, Changpeng Zhao, is currently finishing up a slap-on-the-wrist term in U.S. federal prison for money laundering violations. Binance paid a fine of more than $4 billion for allowing its platform to become a financial clearing house for terrorists, money launderers, sanctioned oligarchs, and other bad guys. The multibillion-dollar company has no official headquarters (before he copped a plea, Zhao was based in the United Arab Emirates). Binance Capital Management Co.—which put $500 million into Musk’s buyout—is registered in the Cayman Islands with an office address on a residential street in Malta.

The Inexplicably Rich

Andrea Stroppa

Andrea Stroppa is an Italian cybersecurity researcher who said that he has assisted Musk’s staff in addressing child sexual exploitation on the platform. Stroppa appeared to first grab Musk’s attention in May 2022, when he professed to have specialized knowledge about Twitter’s bot problem, at the time an obsession of Musk’s. He and Musk have tweeted frequently at each other in the two years since, with Musk publicly thanking Stroppa for his work on the “important problem” of child exploitation. A recent article in La Repubblica called him “Musk’s man in Italy” and highlighted his support for right-wing Italian prime minister Georgia Meloni. It’s not clear how Stroppa came about his wealth or his stake in X. He didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Shahidi Tactic Group, LLC

John Shahidi is a Joe Rogan-esque podcaster, YouTube content guy, MMA fan, purveyor of hard seltzer and beef jerky, business partner of the Nelk Boys (if you don’t know, you’re lucky), and owner of a customized Cybertruck that Musk once called “cool.”

Karim Hakimzadeh

The recently unsealed shareholder list mentions Sequent (Schweiz) AGas Trustee of the Debala Trust, which holds someone’s X shares. Sequent is a multinational financial services firm that can act as an intermediary in order to, for instance, hide the ownership of a trust. But in a 2022 Delaware Court of Chancery filing, Elon Musk’s legal team listed Karim Hakimzadeh as the beneficiary of the Debala Trust, a Swiss trust. Hakimzadeh, who did not respond to a request for comment, appears to be a Harvard-educated, London-based investor and corporate director. He was a seed investor in Juvenescence, a human longevity biotech startup that’s received more than $200 million in funding, and he is listed as the sole officer of S Tier, a recently established video game publisher.

Gulfies

HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, Kingdom Holding Company The billionaire Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal is listed twice in the shareholders list, along with Kingdom Holding Company, the conglomerate he heads. When X was a public company, he owned thirty-five million shares, making him the social media site’s largest outside shareholder. This was the same period when one of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s lieutenants operated a spy ring inside of X that, dissidents contend, led to the doxing, imprisonment, torture, and death of innocent Saudis. X never accounted for its role in fostering the spy ring and still faces lawsuits tracing back to the scandal.

In 2017, during MBS’s so-called crackdown on corruption, Prince Alwaleed was imprisoned and likely tortured at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Riyadh along with a few hundred other Saudi elites. It’s reasonable to believe that the prince’s ownership interest in X is now under the control of the Saudi royal family’s most violent man-child.

Q Tetris Holding LLC Registered to a high-rise office building in Doha that houses the Qatar Investment Authority, Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, Q Tetris Holding LLC is the ownership entity for the Qatari government’s share of X. You may remember seeing Musk, standing glumly with arms crossed, attending the World Cup in Qatar in December 2022. He was joined by a bunch of Qatari notables and another expert wheedler of Gulf dictator cash: Jared Kushner.

VYC25 Limited VYC25 is the ownership vehicle of Vy Capital, a UAE-based venture capital firm run by Alexander Tamas, a German entrepreneur who became industry-famous as an aide to Russian tech mogul, Facebook investor, and former Kremlin ally Yuri Milner. Vy is the kind of firm that’s called “secretive” because journalists don’t know much about it. To be fair, it maintains a small footprint—a discreet office in Dubai and a Los Angeles office shared with Sequoia, which also invested heavily in Musk’s Twitter purchase. According to SEC filings, Vy has more than $6 billion under management. The firm, which reportedly draws some of its backing from Chinese private equity firms, has invested billions of dollars in Musk’s startups. Its U.S. representative, John Hering, who doesn’t list his affiliation with Vy Capital on his LinkedIn or X pages, has subsequently become close to Musk. Tamas has recently talked about winding down his VC investments.

Fidelity Investments

The massive financial firm gets its own category. Fidelity bought pieces of X for more than twenty different funds, an incredible show of faith in Musk’s over-leveraged buyout. It’s since marked down its X holdings more than 71 percent, reflecting the emerging belief that, with Musk’s chaotic management and his enormous debt obligations, this was one of the worst takeover deals in tech history.

Pro Money

These are money managers, hedgies, investment advisors, and other avatars of the uber-rich who spend a lot of time on Excel spreadsheets. There’s Sean Combs, recently indicted for racketeering and sex trafficking (and sued for numerous acts of abuse, sexual assault, and violence). A few of these names are accomplished but not-quite-famous engineers and entrepreneurs who made the kind of eight- or nine-figure fortune that allows them to quietly invest via a family office. Others are CNBC regulars—like Ross Gerber, who’s had an occasionally contentious relationship with Musk and his management. ARK Venture Private Holdings belongs to Cathie Wood, a fund manager whose evangelical faith in Tesla and wild-eyed market predictions has made her a Musk favorite. Some other big names are implicated here, including Republican megadonor Ken Griffin and Bill Clinton’s party pal Ron Burkle, whose charitable foundation is registered to the same address as an entity on the investor list. But like most in this category, they didn’t buy for their clients; they bought for themselves.

In alphabetical order: ARK Venture Private Holdings LLC; BAMCO, Inc.; Bandera Fund LLC; Baron Opportunity Fund; Baron Partners Fund; Brookfield Project X L.P.; Danilo Kawasaki; Eden Relationship Capital L.P.; Gerber Kawasaki Inc.; GFNCI LLC; IMG US, LLC; Ross Gerber; Series N Dis, a series of Atreides Special Circumstances Fund, LLC; Tresser Blvd 402 LLC; UnipolSai S.P.A.; CCM 2020 Investments LLC; Cheng and Chen Family Trust; Anthem Ventures, LLC; Go Mav, LLC; Linda Ye and Robin Ren Family Foundation; Santo Lira LLC; Sean Combs Capital, LLC.

Small Fry

By Elon Musk standards, the investment firms Glacier Ventures, Litani, and G64 Ventures should be small fry. Yet they bought in—that is, they were allowed to buy in on a deal that Musk told his friend Larry Ellison was so “oversubscribed” that he would have to “reduce or kick out some participants.” (Musk still asked Ellison to double his initial $1 billion offer, and Ellison quickly agreed.)

Did Musk need their money? Was he doing them each a favor? Glacier Ventures’s website says they’re still currently raising their first fund. Litani is a small Chicago-based venture capital firm with investments in food and biotech startups (its managing director didn’t respond to a request for comment). G64 Ventures is another small firm that typically makes investments for less than half a million dollars and doesn’t list X among its portfolio companies.

Shell/Who??

These are the shells, trusts, holding companies, and other obscure entities whose ultimate beneficial owners I haven’t been able to identify. X Holdings I Investment LLC could be Musk, who registered X Holdings I and X Holdings II for his Twitter purchase. As always, there’s more sleuthing to do. Do you know anything about CPAs in Milan? Then look up Luchi Fiduciaria for me!

In alphabetical order: ADREM X LLC; ADREM Y LLC; Luchi Fiduciaria SR POS. 365; T. One Holdings LLC; TM33 Partner Holdings LLC; X Holdings I Investment, LLC.

The Missing

There are notable names missing from this list. Peter Thiel, Keith Rabois, and other pro-Trump members of the PayPal mafia didn’t chip in, nor did Thiel’s Founders Fund. According to some of the court-disclosed texts, former PayPal exec and LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman told Musk that $2 billion was “probably doable.” Musk welcomed his contribution but—maintaining the pretense that the deal was oversubscribed—said that he would “just cut back others” to accommodate Hoffman. It appears Hoffman never invested.

Musk’s friends David Sacks, Antonio Gracias, and Jason Calacanis are absent, even though they advised Musk on the acquisition and sat in the Twitter “war room” as he shredded the company roster. In April 2022, Sacks wrote to Musk, “I’m in personally and will raise an [Special Purpose Vehicle],” rather than invest through his venture-capital firm. Musk later liked a message that Sacks wrote: “Best to be low-key during transaction.” Does one of the unidentified shell companies belong to Sacks?

Now-imprisoned fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried, who at the time was the richest thirty-year-old in the world, was denied entry, despite potentially offering billions. “It took me a fair bit of time to come to terms with the fact that Elon and I actually aren’t all that much alike,” Bankman-Fried wrote to me in a September 2022 Twitter DM.

It was probably best for Musk—and everyone—that he never vibed with Bankman-Fried. But he found plenty of other partners: close friends, longtime business consiglieres, B-list internet personalities, Middle Eastern tyrants, and the venture capital firms that wash their bloody billions. It’s an eclectic group, and still incomplete until we can identify some of the players behind these semi-anonymous LLCs. But the court-disclosed list of X shareholders offered what I hoped it would: a little sunshine directed toward the shadowy technofascists and authoritarians helping to underwrite Musk’s empire.

Its funny, I was just wondering where we would be today, if Musk hadn't sprung Twitter from our deepstate's clutches.

But in SECOND'S upside down world, Musk is a techonfascist because he broke Twitter free of our government censorship machine, and allowed more free speech.

Oh, BTW ... rich people invest in acquisitions? Wow. Color me shocked. Not.

I guess you missed this part where Musk ruins the business: Fidelity bought pieces of X for more than twenty different funds, an incredible show of faith in Musk’s over-leveraged buyout. It’s since marked down its X holdings more than 71 percent, reflecting the emerging belief that, with Musk’s chaotic management and his enormous debt obligations, this was one of the worst takeover deals in tech history.

The previous management of Twitter kept the Nazis off of Twitter. Since Musk is a Nazi, he sued advertisers who did not want to be associated with Musk's political beliefs:

Elon Musk Is Mad Advertisers Listened to His Request to “Go F— Yourself”
Fortune 500 companies are not, uh, woke.
https://slate.com/business/2024/08/elon-musk-sues-advertisers-ads-fund
ing-sales-x-twitter.html

Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, which made almost all of its money on ads, was bad business from the start. Musk campaigned to buy the company on a platform of restoring “free speech” for all users, which meant rolling back the content rules and enforcement procedures that the old guard had put in place to both keep advertisers happy and make sure Twitter wasn’t a cesspool of hate speech and misinformation.

Immediately after taking control of Twitter, Musk began removing content rules and allowed swarms of formerly banned individuals back on the site, including Nazis . . .

Yes, Musk makes a terrible businessman. He was bought out from PayPal, which he founded, bc of his chaotic influence. That is between him and his investors, don't you think?

However, one thing the article fails to mention is that Twitter significantly overstated its subscriber base, which was inflated by bots and fake accounts, which inflated its purchase price. When Musk found out the truth, he attempted to back out, but was forced to pay for a fraudulently portrayed business.

Another thing that the article doesn't describe: WTF is this lawsuit about? Filed by

If they're really for press freedom, I can't imagine they have standing.

Sounds like just more deep state harassment.

Second and the cult he belongs to does not care about anything else surrounding Musk, whatsoever. All they want to do is tear him down. They'd be happy if somebody started taking shots at him too. By any means necessary.

Elon saved this country from the people who own MSNBC and NYT and thought they had the entire internet locked down too.

Elon Musk fears for the future of the republic

By Kevin Drum | September 30, 2024 – 2:34 pm

Elon Musk went nuts a few years ago. Nobody knows quite why, but it seems to have been brought on by frustration with California business rules; his dealings with unions; and liberals making fun of him. Since then he's become obsessed with the "woke mind virus," childbirth rates, and illegal immigrants voting for Democrats. The latter has produced a tsunami of tweets and retweets like this one:

Very few Americans realize that, if Trump is NOT elected, this will be the last election. Far from being a threat to democracy, he is the only way to save it!

Let me explain: if even 1 in 20 illegals become citizens per year, something that the Democrats are expediting as fast…

More at https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1840409051357696324

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 29, 2024

This particular tweet is a sober-minded graduate thesis compared to most of them, but it lays out the argument in simple terms:

1. Democrats are deliberately opening the border to an army of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers.

2. ???

3. They will all vote for Democrats and democracy will be over.

The magic in the middle is that somehow all these illegal immigrants become citizens and start voting in large numbers. How? That's something of a mystery, since even the most liberal immigration legislation requires a waiting period of 10-20 years for citizenship. The politician who risks his career over a possible advantage a decade away hasn't been born. Most of them think of the "long term" as next year.

Want more? Virtually all naturalized citizens have been in the country for many years and almost none of them arrived illegally. And anyway, of those who did most aren't even big fans of Democrats. A KFF poll suggests that among immigrants who are "likely undocumented," only 18% say the Democratic Party represents their views. This is not the stuff of landslides.

Musk seems like he's too smart to believe his own nonsensical tweets. Does he, really? Or is it all an act? But if so, why? What's the endgame? Quicker FAA approval for his rocket launches? Starlink expansion into the hinterlands? Letters patent declaring him Emperor of Mars?

Or is he just nuts?

You never shout about How To Remove Illegals. Will it be fast and cheap, done in months? May I suggest secret concentration camps, gas chambers and crematoriums as the fastest and cheapest way for Trump to do this. Or, he could slowly build prisons to hold 30 million illegals until their trials in tens of thousands of courtrooms across America. Then Trump negotiates with other countries to accept Trump's illegal 30 million. There might not be a place for all those illegals in another country. For example, no country wants the Palestinians that Israel wishes to deport. Well, the Israelis can't do crematoriums because of history, but for Americans crematoriums are a final solution to the illegal alien problem.
