Why Trump’s comments about ABC’s broadcast license matter

The problem isn’t just that Donald Trump threatened a network’s broadcast license. The problem is that he keeps threatening networks’ broadcast licenses.

To know anything about Donald Trump’s rhetorical style is to know how much he loves the word “rigged.” To hear the former president tell it, just about everything in American society — from elections to the judicial system to the Emmys — has been “rigged” by nefarious forces he never identifies.

With this in mind, it hardly came as a surprise that the Republican described his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris as “rigged” — both before and after the event.

But the GOP nominee didn’t stop there.

Donald Trump really did not like getting live fact-checked by ABC News during Tuesday night’s debate, so much so he wants the network shut down. “They ought to take away their license for the way they did that,” said Trump, in a clear threat to ABC News.

For those who missed Tuesday night’s debate, Trump, true to form, lied uncontrollably about matters large and small. In a small handful of instances, ABC News moderators Linsey Davis and David Muir felt compelled to let the public know the truth.

This infuriated many Republicans — evidently, the former president was supposed to lie with impunity, even if that left viewers deceived about important issues — including the party’s nominee.

There is, however, a qualitative difference between whining about fact-checking and publicly raising the idea of using governmental power to strip a major American outlet of its broadcasting license.

If this sounds at all familiar, it’s not your imagination. Earlier this year, after Trump won the Iowa caucuses, he expected news organizations to air his celebratory remarks live and in their entirety. When NBC and CNN chose not to do so, the Republican declared, “[F]rankly, they should have their licenses or whatever they have taken away.”

He made similar comments during his White House tenure, writing via social media in 2017, “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!”

After leaving office, such rhetoric became even more common. Last year, for example, the former president suggested that Comcast — MSNBC’s and NBC News’ parent company — should be investigated for “Country Threatening Treason” because he disapproved of the networks’ coverage of the Trump/Russia scandal. A month later, as my colleague Ja’han Jones noted, the Republican also publicly questioned CBS News’ right to access public airwaves after it ran an interview with Biden that Trump didn’t like.

A month after that, Trump wrote a related missive, arguing that he wants the government to “come down hard” on MSNBC (my employer), whose reporting he described as “illegal.”

It was against this backdrop that the Republican told a national television audience that ABC’s license should be targeted because he didn’t like the network’s anchors telling the public accurate information.

There’s been some public conversation of late about Trump’s authoritarian-style vision — and for good reason. The former president is threatening perceived foes with prison sentences, endorsing a “strongman” leadership style, bragging about his support from dictators, raising the prospect of a temporary American “dictatorship,” talking about “terminating” parts of the Constitution that stand in the way of his ambitions, arguing that his rivals shouldn’t be “allowed” to run against him, targeting immigrants with Hitler-style rhetoric while promising to create militarized mass deportations and detention camps, and promising pardons to politically aligned criminals.

Trump’s plan to crack down on the free press is a key and radical part of the same agenda.

Former President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he would not participate in another presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.

“THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!” Trump posted on Truth Social, referencing his first face-off with President Joe Biden in June and his second with Harris on Tuesday.

Harris’ campaign had called for another debate after the vice president and Trump faced off at ABC’s presidential debate in Philadelphia. Harris reiterated that call during a rally in Charlotte on Thursday, saying, “I believe we owe it to the voters to have another debate because this election and what is at stake could not be more important.”

But Trump on Thursday appeared to end speculation about whether another debate would take place, saying that Harris “SHOULD FOCUS ON WHAT SHE SHOULD HAVE DONE DURING THE LAST ALMOST FOUR YEAR PERIOD.”

The Harris campaign said it does not take Trump’s announcement that there will not be another presidential debate at face value.

“He changes his position every day,” said a senior Harris adviser. “I predict there will be another.”

Following their Philadelphia debate, Trump defended his performance to reporters, claiming the ABC moderators were “very unfair” and that it was “three-on-one” during the debate. The next day on Fox News, Trump said he didn’t know if he wanted to participate in another debate as he continued to claim he had “won.”

“In the World of Boxing or UFC, when a Fighter gets beaten or knocked out, they get up and scream, ‘I DEMAND A REMATCH, I DEMAND A REMATCH!’ Well, it’s no different with a Debate. She was beaten badly last night. Every Poll has us WINNING,” Trump wrote Wednesday on Truth Social.

According to a CNN Fact Check, as of Thursday morning, every major scientific poll about the debate had found that Harris won. That included a CNN/SSRS flash poll of registered voters who watched Tuesday’s debate, who broadly agreed that Harris outperformed Trump.

Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr, who endorsed Trump after suspending his own bid, said on Fox News that while Trump won the debate on “substance,” Harris “clearly won the debate in terms of her delivery, her polish, her organization and her preparation.”

Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the respective running mates of Trump and Harris, are scheduled to face off in a debate hosted by CBS on October 1.

1. He's haunted. He can't stand being seen as a loser. So it's impossible to fully admit he didn’t win in 2020. He looks to distractions like crowd size and adoring coverage for solace. 4. His bubble lies to him. All politicians live in self-protective bubbles. But Trump’s, which extends from his social media cocoon to his Mar-a-Lago luxury, is almost impossible to penetrate with hard truths. There’s always a Loomer to tell Trump he's winning... even when he's not.

At a White House event Thursday celebrating a 30-year-old law aimed at preventing violence against women, President Joe Biden alluded to a jury’s decision that Donald Trump was liable for sexual abuse.

Biden touted the 1994 Violence Against Women Act as 1,000 victims of violence — women the president in a Thursday op-ed dubbed “heroic survivors” — looked on from the executive mansion’s South Lawn.

Without directly naming Trump, Bidel alluded to the former president’s case after lauding Vice President Kamala Harris’ record as a prosecutor and California attorney general going after criminals who had committed acts of violence against women.

“You cannot say that about my predecessor,” Biden said to applause. He also criticized “my predecessor” for nominating three of the six Supreme Court justices who voted to end federal abortion protections as he heaped praise on the assembled victims.

“Your courage inspires the nation,” Biden told them. “It wasn’t too long ago that we as a country didn’t want to talk about violence against women as a national epidemic. … It was referred to as a family affair.

“I believed the only way we could change the culture was shining a light on that culture — and saying its name,” he added. “Over the last 30 years … whenever we’ve reauthorized this law, we’ve strengthened it.”

Biden’s remarks followed a Glamour magazine op-ed published Thursday morning in which he wrote that as a young senator in the 1990s, he became interested in the issue because society was “wrong” to think that the federal government should not have a role in preventing violence against women and to turn a “blind eye” to it. Biden did not mention Trump in the Glamour piece.

He wrote that as Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, he began to hold hearings on the topic. “With each shocking testimony, hearts and minds began to change,” Biden wrote. “Thanks to these courageous women, and advocates fighting alongside them, the Violence Against Women Act was signed into law on September 13, 1994.”

The White House on Thursday began the day by issuing a lengthy fact sheet touting Biden’s decades of work on the issue. White House aides have begun to talk more about Biden’s legacy in his final months in office — but Trump often makes that difficult.

“As President, he signed into law the VAWA Reauthorization Act of 2022 — critical legislation that expands access to safety and support for survivors, increases prevention efforts, and establishes new federal protections against online harassment and abuse,” the fact sheet stated. “The president and vice president also secured the highest-ever funding levels to implement VAWA, and the Biden-Harris Administration has acted quickly to implement the law’s new programs and protections.”

As Biden spoke outside White House Thursday evening, the Republican presidential nominee and former president who has been found liable for sexual abuse by a jury was asking voters to let him move back into the building.

Trump has appealed a civil verdict in which a nine-person jury last year found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming columnist E. Jean Carroll in a department store in the 1990s. The same jurors ordered him to pay Carroll $5 million in damages.

Following a court hearing on the appeal last Friday in Manhattan, Trump conducted a wild press appearance during which he criticized Carroll and other women who have accused him of sexual abuse or misconduct.

A noticeably angry Trump, speaking from his tower in New York City, repeated his claims that he had “never met” Carroll, and accused her of plagiarizing her accusations of the incident from the popular NBC program “Law & Order.”

“This case,” he griped, “it’s a scam.”

Carroll is not alone. Other women have accused Trump of physically assaulting them, on an airplane and at his Florida resort, but the former New York real estate mogul and reality television host again last week denied each accusation. He called them fabricated “stories” and claimed he didn’t know any of the women.

“When you’re rich and famous, a lot of people come up with a lot of stories,” he said at Trump Tower. “We have a very corrupt system of laws.”

The Carroll case made its way into Vice President Kamala Harris’ attack lines during Tuesday’s presidential debate with Trump.

After the former president had pivoted back to illegal immigration — something he did throughout the nearly two-hour verbal sparring session — Harris quipped: “Well, I think this is so rich.”

“Coming from someone who has been prosecuted for national security crimes, economic crimes, election interference, has been found liable for sexual assault and his next big court appearance is in November at his own criminal sentencing,” Harris said.

‘He raped her’

Biden had brought up the Carroll sexual assault ruling before.

“Donald Trump was found liable for sexual assault by a judge, who told us not to be fooled by Trump brushing it off,” the president said at a campaign rally on July 12, before he ended his bid for a second term.

“Here’s what the judge wrote. Quote, the judge in that case wrote, quote, ‘Mr. Trump attempted to minimize sexual abuse, finding it frivolous. Mr. Trump raped her.’ That’s the judge’s language, not mine,” he said. “‘Raped her,’ as many people understand the word rape.”

Notably, however, the jury in the Carroll case declined to find Trump liable for rape, agreeing instead to a sexual abuse ruling.

Women voters are expected to play a potentially decisive role in November’s election. Harris had a 13 percentage point lead over Trump among women in a 19th News-Survey Monkey survey of 20,762 adults, including 18,123 registered voters, conducted online Aug. 26-Sept. 4.

“MAGA Republicans found out the power of women in 2022,” Biden said during his Aug. 19 keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, referring to the last midterm election. “And Donald Trump is going to find out the power of women in 2024. Watch.”

But during an Aug. 30 rally in Johnstown, Pa., Trump told an audience in the key swing state this: “Somebody said women don’t like Donald Trump. That’s wrong. I think they love me — I love them.”

The video I posted just ended. It was 45 minutes long so there is no way you could have watched it before you posted this. If you had, about 2/3 the way through you'd have heard Cuban explain how Trump was void of intelligence, character, morals. Void, he said, of any redeeming attributes; qualities. How Trump had a lazy brain that was not capable of learning.

All these Republicans are getting onboard with Kamala because, as they say, Trump would be a national security risk and is too stupid to be president. It seems to be above your intellectual capacity, to understand what is going on and why that's good for the country.

You being a Putin communist, it doesn't surprise me you do not understand why they chose to put country over party. And why democrats would embrace that.
