The guys on Monday's edition of the RealClearPolitics radio show discussed whether an apology from FEMA will be the end of the story, first reported by the Daily Wire, that some disaster relief teams were ordered to avoid houses with Donald Trump campaign signs during the cleanup from Hurricane Milton last month.

"It really happened, and it's outrageous," said RCP co-founder Tom Bevan. "Of all the stories we've seen this election season, this one might be the most outrageous. To have the government deciding who does and does not get disaster aid based on their political affiliations, or whether they have Trump signs in their yards, is just the absolute antithesis of this country."

Some of our editors and reporters heard these rumors and sent two reporters to North Carolina. The second North Carolina-based journalist found some -- not these kind of shenanigans -- but FEMA maybe had said they'd done more than they had done."

"Well, it turned out that the editor's instinct was right, they were just looking in the wrong state -- it was in Florida. It was Highlands County, Florida, where this happened. A supervisor named Marni Washington put out this directive. The Daily Wire, it's a young reporter, Lief Le Mahieu, who nailed it down. They got the tip, and it took them a few days and they nailed it down," Cannon explained. "FEMA surprisingly admitted it and fired the woman, Marni Washington. She, in turn, gave an interview to the Washington Examiner basically saying FEMA was throwing her under the bus and she was a scapegoat. That's the word she used and she implied very strongly that these orders had come from higher up than her."

"It makes you wonder two things," Carl Cannon said. "The first is why was this clearly unlawful order even followed? And it was followed by teams of people from other branches of government that are attached to FEMA. Why didn't somebody just say no? But they did do it, and they passed over at least 20 homes in this one town."

"The second thing it brings to mind is where else did this happen? And how widespread is this?"

"People have been saying this is a right-wing MAGA conspiracy. And it turns out now we have proof that it happened, at least in this one case," Cannon said. "FEMA will say, when they finally come clean to congressional hearings, 'Oh, we were worried about our people's safety.' But it smacks of something else."

"I think we do need to get to the bottom of ‘how pervasive was this?’" Bevan added. It seems unlikely that some random supervisor would just come up with this on their own and direct their people to do this, that it didn't come from higher up."
